My standards for banh mi are a little high having grown up near Westminster/Garden Grove, but Hoa Phat is always solid. My go-to order will always be the heo quay, which is always nice and crispy with fresh veggies on the side. Plus I'm a sucker for good packaging coupled with quality food. The banh mi itself was crispy and so was the pork belly! There was a good amount of veggies included as well. For the Vietnamese coffee, it wasn't as bitter and had a good level of sweetness. This location was as consistent as their Monterey Park location. Street parking is available on Valley Blvd. It was very busy on Saturday afternoon. Took several minutes before I could get my order. I've been to their other location I believe in Monterey Park/Alhambra area, and glad to see they have another location! I love the aesthetic they have going on with the brown coardboard box they put the sandwiches in. I just ordered two crispy pork belly banh mis! They're very tasty and the quality is consistent with the other location. I think the little seasoning sauce they give with the sandwich actually does a lot, it's quite flavorful and umami! My only gripe is that I consider it a little small compared to other locations, but I think it's probably fair for $10?? I finally got a chance to try Banh Mi Hoa Phat and it delivered on the hype for me! The hours for their locations are early morning to late afternoon so lucky for me I was in the area to give it a try. This San Gabriel location is quite small and there is only timed parking on street or around the corner in some of the neighborhoods. It's seem like a quick service restaurant as there are only benches for seating and counter tops. The vibe is set up quick service and you just ring the bell if you need service as staff is in the back working. I opted for the Grilled Pork which was $9. I always wanted to come by because of the cool box they present it in and of course the review of the Banh Mi flavors. Order was ready in less than 2 minutes! The look and the aroma of the Banh Mi was delicious. I enjoyed it in my car and the box comes with the carrot and daikon and cucumbers on the side and umami sauce. This banh mi was one of my favorites! The bread was crisp and flaky and not to mention very much loaded with all the protein. Until you open up the box and pull the Banh Mi out you see how big it actually is. That pork was fatty and juicy. Their side of Umami sauce is a must to enjoy with every bite! The bread has no flavor and the texture is not good. I only came here because I was asked to by a family member who said that this location is WAY better than the first, so I came for them. They were half wrong, the bread is still the same bread as their first location, however the pork belly was delicious here. If I were to rate it on the pork belly alone, it would be 5 stars. There are no tables, just seats in the waiting area. They don't seem to run out of things like the MPK location. I came close to closing time 30 minutes before and they still had the crispy pork belly banh mi! They're best known for their crispy pork belly banh mi sandwich, which is $10 now. I was in the mood for a warm roasted pork banh mi. I have tried their MPK location before didn't think it was amazing but it was decent. I saw they had opened SG location so I wanted to stop by and try it. Upon walking in, I noticed the entrance door was very dirty and had a bunch of grease finger marks on the glass. It was kind of gross. I proceeded anyway because I was hungry. I ordered one sandwich, the roasted pork banh mi. I saw there was a discount for paying cash so I paid with cash. While waiting for my ordered, I was looking around. They have refrigerated display cases but they're about 75% empty and partially filled with drinks. They have bench seating along the sides of the whole store. There are no tables so there is a open middle area. The MPK location has tables for you to sit and eat. The exterior and interior isn't really inviting at this location. About 10 mins later, I received my order. I walked to my car and attempted to start eating it since I was hungry. Started putting in the carrots and daikon. Then the cucumber & cilantro, when I noticed the cucumber was cut in an odd shape. I then noticed the bag was kind of this milky color. So I did a smell test, it was sour. I was just going to eat it without the cucumbers but was encouraged to go back into the store and let them know the cucumber & cilatro was sour. I let them know. They gave me a new one. I am not sure when the veggies are packed, perhaps I got an old one. But they should really do quality checks before just putting it in the box. Now I have a fresh bag of cucumbers and cilantro. After putting it in my sandwich, I took a bite. It was just okay. They are generous with the pate and mayo which I appreciate. I didn't like the pork belly, which people rave about. It was cold. Also the bread didn't taste super fresh either. Idk if they make it fresh in their store or bring it from the MPK location. I had to try this sandwich shop because of all the rave about it. I got the special and the crispy pork.. which totaled to 21$. The sandwiches were extremely bland. There was a sauce that came with it but it' was still not enough. Even the patê was not flavorful at all. The portions of the meat and pate were pretty generous but they really skimped out on the veggies. So skimpy that I was able to remember the amount placed inside--4 strands of cilantro and 3 tiny slices of jalapeños LOL. On top of that, the pickled veggies weren't pickled at all. They put it in a box with a cut out, so it's not fully wrapped. They also give a side of umami sauce, which is a first time thing for a banh mi shop. I ordered the special (dac biet) and the meat looked a lot more high quality than I'm used to. There was actual pieces of pork belly. They are pretty skimpy with their cilantro. The size of the bread is like a short baguette. The bread itself is nice and crispy. Even though there was plenty of pate and mayo, the sandwich was really flavorless. The umami sauce added saltiness but the flavor doesn't really enhance the sandwich since soy sauce tastes weird with banh mi. Overall, I was really disappointed with cost and the sandwich itself. I don't mind paying more for a better quality sandwich but not if it is smaller and less delicious. There are also at least three or more Vietnamese sandwiches places within a block or two away so unfortunately this place is not it. Saigon Bakery is way better and less expensive. So it's half ice and half Vietnamese coffee. It's not listed on the menu, but it's $2 a cup. A steal! The crispy pork banh min was obviously the star of the show. The short baguette was warm, soft, crispy, and airy. The crispy pork itself was obviously extremely crispy, juicy, and tender. They gave a lot of crispy pork. I love that they are generous with their portions. Worth the $10. Besides the generous portions of crispy pork in the baguette, it also had a generous amount of pate, mayo, carrot, daikon, cucumber, cilantro, chili peppers, and umami sauce. I love that they put the carrots, daikons, cucumber, cilantro, chili peppers, and umami sauce on the side so that you can put in however much you want of each item into your sandwich unlike other banh mi restaurants. So it's kinda like a DIY sandwich. The benefits of doing that is to help prevent the sandwich from becoming soggy especially if you aren't eating it right away. Smart move. I will definitely be coming back for me. So delicious and full of explosive delectable flavors. It totally does remind me of my travels to Vietnam.
