I really question the hygiene of this place, especially after COVID. They were doing both outdoor and indoor dining. Tons of flies flying inside and outside the restaurant. I ordered the medium rare beef pho. Upon arrival, I noticed a dead fly floating on the soup. I flagged a waiter to tell him the issue. He looked at it, gave me a shrug, and then took it back to the kitchen. I presume he doesn't speak English, which is totally understandable in SGV, but I would think he should know how to say a simple "sorry" at the very least. Instead, I just got a "oh well" type of shrug Five mins later, he returned with a "new" bowl. Obviously the fly wasn't there anymore, but I notice none of the beef was "medium rare" anymore, which lead me to think they didn't remake a new bowl for me, but instead just scooped out the content from the old bowl into a new bowl instead, causing my medium rare beef to become fully cooked. There are a lot of Vietnamese restaurants to choose from in SGV, this place was just average prior to this experience, but now I'm not planning to return anymore. This is my all time favorite pho restaurant. This is the first place I tried pho when I started working in Alhambra. Ever since trying this pho I fell in love. I always tried other restaurants because I didn't live in Alhambra but no where every compared to this one. The broth is so flavorful. Sometimes I just get a noodle pho but other times I add well done meet and it's amazing. In the hotter weather I try what I call the salad but it's vermicelli noodles with lettuce cucumbers and 2 egg rolls and Omgggg it is amazing. Their Vietnamese iced coffee is perfect. Right between strong and I want to go to sleep tonight. The service is amazing and the food always comes out so fast. The prices are really good too. Not a huge fan. I love pho, and have eaten pho or ban mi in more than 200 places from Boston to Vegas to LA over the last 10 years. It's HARD to get wrong! But honestly, the service is slow with inattentive waiters that almost act like they're doing you a favor. The smoothies are way too sweet. The spring rolls are BEYOND greasy..... like a pool of burger fat from a grill. Nasty! The pork ban mi tasted..... fake. It lacked any distinct flavor that I'm accustomed too. Maybe it was an old sandwich? The curry with French bread was decent. My kids finished it off immediately. That's 3-4 stars for that one dish. The Pho is fine. One of my favorite places for Pho. Great dishes and convenient location with parking. Service is ok. Used to the service there. The only gripe I would have is that if you do take out the choice of size is large. They started doing this during pandemic. That's not good and pushing folks to pay more for a large size order for bowl sizes, pho and other dishes that would usually have different sizes when you eat in . My friend brought me here and the food was amazing! She said it use to be Pho 79, which I love going to in the OC. I got my usual vermicelli dish with grilled beef, shrimp and egg rolls. This is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. Doing food family style, expect to share large platters of plain, down home and well executed Vietnamese food. I've been coming here for several years even before the name change. The staff has always remained the same - same people, same great attitude and service. English may be a challenge for some, but overall, they're such nice and attentive people. As for the food, it's pretty dang authentic and good. I visited this place when it was Pho 79. Several things have changed since my last visit. Besides the name change, the most noticeable change has to be the absence of parking in front of the restaurant. Now you have to rely mainly on the parking structure behind the restaurant, although there are some parking spots directly behind the restaurant which probably are never open. The main reason why I am writing this review has to be its poor service. There were two guys that were just standing around. I couldn't even tell that they worked there, because they didn't do anything. Also, every time I needed something like the check, more water, napkins, etc., I actually had to walk to someone to get it because no one was paying attention. When my bowl of Pho came, it was a nice substantial portion. Unfortunately, it wasn't that good. The broth was mediocre at best. It appears from the menu that they do have a wide selection of Vietnamese cuisine, but the service left a bad taste in my mouth. I shouldn't have to always get out of my seat to get someone's attention. Also, there is a $10 minimum for credit card transactions. At first glance from the street, this place looks abandoned. I LOVED Pho 79... it was a go-to pho place for me and my family. After years of decline, I believe the Pho 79 owners revamped the establishment to carry on their existing chain's name, Saigon Eden. (Owner information to be verified, but the latter was told to my mom by a waiter in Vietnamese.) This restaurant still has some of the same staff members. I don't know about the cooks since I've never seen the kitchen, but from what I've had so far, I've noticed an improvement! My review for 5/30/16: Hot pho (rare beef beef slices over noodle soup) is served on a plate, which helps prevent a messy table AND keeps the soup relative warm towards the end! The beef is tasty and tender, the broth seems salty at first, but not so much with noodles and veggies (onions, cilantro, bean sprouts, bay leaves, jalepenos --up to you what you add.) I like my pho with a dash of Sriracha and shredded greens (as mentioned.) The boneless pork chop over vermicelli (Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio) was tender and flavorful as well. It was paired with CRUNCHY egg rolls filled with pork and veggies. Though it was a slightly greasy, it retained its heat throughout most of the meal. All veggies are fresh. Can't wait to come back for more! We experienced great service and received complimentary soft drinks (Coke or Sprite) as part of their promotion when asked. There is street parking on Garfield between Main St. and Bay State; slots in the alley way, entrance on Garfield a few buildings away fr the restaurant; a few slots directly behind the back door; or the free parking structure on 1st Street across from La Granada. Let's clear things up here before I start the review. Saigon Eden is managed by the same owners of Pho 79. Why the name change you may ask? I don't have a clue, but I'm darn happy the recipes haven't changed! Siagon Eden easily has the best pho around town. Everything from the rare meat, beef meatballs, tripe, and most importantly the broth, is all perfectly combined into a bowl of steamy flavorful greatness. Need a little more food for your hangover? No problem! If you have the stomach for it, order the pork and shrimp spring rolls. It always comes out fresh with that red shrimp showing its colors through that rice paper wrap. You can't go wrong with the fried pork rolls either. Perfectly cooked to the crisp while maintaining that sweet Vietnamese pork flavor. To top it off for dessert, I always wash everything down with the durian smoothie. If you're a durian fiend like me, the smoothie here taste like you're drinking straight out of the hard shell of the fruit. After a steady and slow decline Pho 79 finally shut its doors and I believe the owners retired. In its prime, Pho 79 served some good pho but all good things come to an end. Enter Saigon Eden who took its place, gave the interior a fresh coat of paint and is now serving some of finest pho broth I've tasted in a long time. Are you listening Golden Deli? This place is your new competitor. I ordered a bowl of wonton soup with BBQ pork. The broth was rich and flavorful, star anise and all the Vietnamese goodness that is foundational to a good bowl of pho. The wontons were meaty and plump...but o-m-g the BBQ pork blew me away. It was grilled and charred before it was placed in the bowl and that smoky charred flavor mingled with the broth and it blew my mind. Another Saigon Eden that's even closer to my house. This Saigon Eden took over Pho 79 and it's quite a bit bigger than the location on Las Tunas. I'd say the seating area is at least 2 times bigger than the other restaurant. The menu seems like the same dishes, but the menu itself (that you flip thru with the pictures) is slightly different. The seating area is very spacious, has a few TVs and some beautiful track lighting They no longer have the self-service chopsticks and spoons just sitting in a big pile at your table. How long have those been there? Who else has touched that? Yes, give me clean ones from the back! The plates that hold your bean sprouts & basil are a very modern & pleasing rectangle. This is my first time and my last time too. -The place smells when you walk in. -I ordered Banh Hoi ( thin rice vermicelli) with egg rolls and charbroiled pork, they use dried banh hoi that taste like fake and load a ton of oil on it. Restroom still one stall and old. 2 of the staff I recognize from the previous pho79 (the front server and the back kitchen worker)so that's a good sign. They kept some of the staff. I ordered dry noodles and spicy beef with veggies and it was good and flavorful. I was happy with my meal, but my friend had the porkchop and broken rice and thought it was okay. I thought for the size it was portioned and not so big compared to other broken rice places, but that's fine because the name of this restaurant doesn't say pho or com which means known for noodles or rice. When I found out that Pho 79 has closed and the place has been taken over by Saigon Eden, I was excited. A closer Saigon Eden location to where I'm at? Sign me up! They definitely improved on the interior as well as the quality of the food. I find that compared to the quality of the original Saigon Eden location on Las Tunas, this isn't as good. It's still pretty decent but I would not be raving about this place to everyone I know. The staff service could use some work, too. After we were seated down and handed the menus, it took them a while to come over and take our orders. They have not checked up on us since. We even had to go up to the register to pay (not uncommon but still) because it seems like the staff were too busy conversing with each other. Would I come back again? Yeah, maybe. Oh Pho 79! You provided me with such memorable experiences dating back to my high school days when I would save my lunch money in order to enjoy a bowl of warm and soupy Pho Ga from you. Fast forward to today, and my beloved Pho 79 has been better shuttered, and replaced by Saigon Eden. I have been to the Saigon Eden down Las Tunas and it was a decent pho joint, so I was curious if how this place would fare. The interior has been remodeled with the addition of some big screens, but for the most part everything remains the same from before. Some of the old staff from Pho 79 have remained while others have sought work elsewhere (Pho Thanh). Service remains the same, so I was hoping the food remained somewhat the same as well! We ordered the Pho Ga and the Bum Bo Hui, and it was brought out in short order! The Pho Ga, although extremely simple, is the perfect noodle soup for a cold day and surprisingly it tasted perfect. The soup base was not too salty and everything tasted very good once you add in the essential mint leaves, bean sprouts, etc. The Bum Bo Hui is loaded with flavor and various toppings; more for spicy lovers as the soup based really hit home! Overall, I was satisfied with my dinning experience here, to me it seemed like they just changed the name to a Saigon Eden, but the quality of food still reminds me of Pho 79. Parking is plentiful in the structure in the back, and help yourself to some dessert afterwards! I can not wait to be back for more food in the near future! read more

I was very unhappy when Phò 79 shut down. But a couple of weeks ago I noticed Saigon Eden's sign. I walk in and the interior has been redone. Some of the same staff so it has the same feel.The food tastes very close to the original. It is the closest Phò place from the house and will be the go to for quick dinners. They are still in the soft opening phase but I expect they will get better. One thing, there is NO PARKING on Garfield. The rating is 4 stars but should improve. read more
