This is a long, overdue review. I thought I was posting to update my past review and then I realized that maybe I deleted my old review I wrote from them. I've been going to Saigon Flavor since they first opened, maybe 20 years ago. When I first started coming here, it was because people said it was started by the same family as Golden Deli. The family members now say that they are not affiliated with each other and that Saigon Flavor was sold under different ownership a long time ago but as long as I've been going there, it's always been run by the same people. Maybe some of the older aunties retired/left but it's the same couple. I enjoy Saigon Flavor more because it's not crowded so there's no wait time plus seating is more spaced out. I get a bit claustrophobic when sitting that close to strangers so the booths at Saigon are better for me when I do dine in. Sometimes when I'm catching up with a friend who I haven't seen for a long time, I suggest we go to Saigon Flavor. Either they already know and love Saigon Flavor or it's new to them and they love trying it for the first time. It's also nice because it's quiet, not crowded, it has a very extensive menu to fit many people's tastes, they don't rush you if you are catching up with a friend, the food comes out quick, and their portion size allows you to take home leftovers. Back in the day, I was pretty new to Vietnamese food and I would always order the pho and eggrolls. But through the years, I've been able to try many of their menu items. I really love their broken rice (com tam) dishes especially with the baked egg and egg roll. Whatever dish I'm ordering, I usually add the eggrolls a la carte to it. The chicken curry (cari) is also really good. I also really love their avocado smoothie and durian smoothie. One of my favorite dishes that they serve here that I've never seen offered at any other Vietnamese restaurant is their banh tam bi. It is thick rice/tapioca noodles with shredded pork skin and shrimp powder, served in coconut cream and fish sauce, herbs, lettuce. You can get this with shrimp paste and/or egg rolls. It's ridiculously simple, delicious, and addictive. It is also very refreshing when you want an alternative to pho and rice. I almost always call and order to-go and their order always just takes 10 minutes so by the time, I get to the restaurant, it's always fresh and ready for pickup. This is so nice especially on days when you are too tired or lazy to cook, when you haven't had time to grocery shop, and you just want something that is quick, reliable, and delicious. What I love most about this restaurant is how nice the staff is to me. No matter how long it's been since my last visit, they always recognize me and smile and call me little sister and that it has been so long since they last seen me. It is just very touching to the heart to get this type of kindness in this day and time. They are closed on Tuesday and they might take a month off vacation similar to Golden Deli does every summer. They have street parking and a small lot in the back. There's also parking in the neighborhood side streets. Everyone seasons pho differently. I like to taste the broth first to decide how much sugar and spice to add. I use sriracha and jalapeños for spice, hoisin for sweetness, and lime for sourness. It really depends on personal preference. I wanted to try two dishes, indecisively. The waitress asked if I was sure, as it was a lot of food, but I assured her I could handle it. They have all the typical Vietnamese items on the menu and it's all good, but apparently when my niece wanted curry, the server told us that their curry isn't the best. lol. I appreciate the honesty. Was craving a good bun rieu (Vietnamese tomato-based crab noodle soup) and we usually go to Golden Deli San Gabriel for this but decided to see if there's another local place that offers this dish. I'm used to GD's style presentation and flavor profile for this dish so I'm usually hesitant to try new places. I read somewhere that this place is very similar to GD so why not try it out? We arrived to their private back parking lot (a plus!) a bit after they opened. There's maybe room for 10 or so cars. Upon entering the restaurant, it was very similar to GD's decor but with less buzz and no queue. Immediately, we were handed menus and I looked for bun rieu. Menu is similar to GD both in terms of items offered, down to typeface. Bun rieu arrived after about 10 mins and it looked pretty similar. Taste wise, it was yummy and I added most of the lime and herbs that were given. I was a happy camper! We also had an order of fresh spring rolls which were tasty and rounded out the meal. At the last minute, I also ordered a dessert drink. It was full of coconut strings, red bean, condensed and evaporated milk and jelly strings. Definitely a treat...sweet, indulgent and another one of my many guilty pleasures. Service is fine, very homey and even if there may be a language barrier as some reviewers have mentioned, the staff will be there for you to help make your experience. We didn't want to eat there because it was so hot. So we decided to order something light and fast to make (Banh Mi). Service: Took a while for someone to come to take our order and it wasn't even busy. I overheard the cashier talking to the waitress saying that "oh they're ordering togo and they're sitting at the table to look fancy". The translation sounded much nicer. As we waited for the two sandwiches, people were coming and leaving as they picked up their togo orders. People walking in would sit down and would get their food instantly. So I asked another waitress why the sandwiches are taking so long. Her response was they had to toast the bread. Really? We came here on a Thursday evening. Warning - this place closes early! We got here at 7:30pm and were surprised that they were closing at 8pm. They have a parking lot in the back which was nice. I came here on my friends recommendation that it was a cheaper version of golden deli. I'm not sure I'm sold as I think I would still prefer Golden Deli over Saigon Flavor. The spring roll was a disappointment though. The rice wrap was not fresh to the point where it was chewy. My friend even ended up unwrapping it just to get to the meat. Food tour while visiting my prego friend and it was raining-ish in LA, so we decided on some legit bun bo hue. We opted a late lunch since we had a semi heavy breakfast but I always have a separate tummy for noodles. Love that they give you the proper herbs to go with the noodle soup and the best part about bun bo hue the pork hoof in it. Love the chewy fat and skin, the one downside no blood cubes. The glass noodles they use are the snap-apart variety rather than the chewy/stretchy variety. Small, private parking is available in the back. Otherwise, street parking is available. Parking at Hawaii market is a bit risky during their peak hours.
