With the pedigree of the chefs and the owners, it's not surprising that this place serves up the perfect mix of misplaced arrogance and mediocre food. Am I the only one that doesn't like The Grill or Santina? And what was that terrible restaurant across from Bar Pitti called? Cafe Clover, what a treasure that wasn't. I'm sorry, but I just don't get the taste-makers who are running the New York restaurant scene. Give me a simple restaurant that doesn't sacrifice quality of food for schticky dishes, oversized portions, pretentious service and just a little bit too much butter. Evening started with lame vibes from the neuron-poor crew at the host stand. Asked to shift tables after being stuck at an awkward two-top at the back and was met with non-chalant opposition that I can only imagine they engaged in for sport given the handful of open seating options. Ordered a Mozzarella in Carrozza, which for the non-native Italian speaking among us roughly translates to triangle shaped frozen mozzarella stick. Also had the chicory greens which was big on quantity but low on interest. The Branzino was probably the best thing we had and i would rate it a sold "fine". Linguine with clam sauce was a little cold and a little metallic-y. Finished with a giant slab of dry olive oil cake that looked like Flo fished it out of a rotating diner display. Just a very generic experience, and nothing that merits the buzz. Can't get a Resy now? Give it a little time, have a feeling some slots will start opening up. read more

Just left Saint Theo's. I'm not quite sure what Theo was the saint of but it certainly isn't food or ambience and certainly not the patron Saint of value for money. The meatballs were reasonable but the fungi was this absurd Sudo tempura nonsense that was so greasy I thought our portobello had spent all day at the beach and landed straight on our plate without showering. Dreadful. It gets worse. The arugula salad came next. I think they washed the leaves in the Dead Sea the salt was overwhelmingly awful. It also tasted of blu cheese which was interesting but not what we wanted. The waiter highly recommended the ricotta pasta, his favorite dish on earth. For $30 we expected a lot more than Mac and cheese, ahem mac and cheese is what we got, and it wasn't good. The whole Branzino was terribly over cooked and a very small branzino at that, fortunately. There's only so much char a man can bare. Finally wear ear plugs and keep phones out on the table, seriously you won't be hearing your friends so text eachother the music is unbearably loud. This is the first and last time I let my wife recommend a restaurant based solely on influencer fad. These influencers may know selfies, but they sure as hell don't know food. Okay so I really LOVE this place. They have spectacular food, drinks, and ambiance. Honestly it feels like you're walking into a Great Gatsby pregame (in the best way possible). Every time I go my boyfriend seems to make the pickled veggies disappear in 3 minutes or less along with the bread. I myself refuse to share the pasta on any occasion, though it's more than enough for two. After dinner we moved over to the bar and stayed the whole night because Myles, Gabby and Dave were amazing. The drinks were so delicious - including the off the menu ones - and I actually dreamt of the Caesar salad. Obviously the espresso martini was bomb but have Gabby, Dave or Myles make you a surprise concoction. You won't be disappointed. The tomato pasta was good but SUPER salty - felt that was a possible accident? If it wasn't, it would have honestly been one of the most incredible pomodoro sauces I'd ever had. I enjoyed the overall design of the place, which gives a vintage nod, with low light and hanging art. My bf decided spur of the moment to head here, and I met with him after having dined with a couple of friends. I wish he would've chosen earlier so that I could try the cuisine, but he seemed to have really enjoyed his steak dish. I can't speak on it bc I don't eat meat, but I did have a couple bites of a squash side, and it was such a texturally interesting and tasty side. Well done! I had also a bite of the bread, which had a beautiful top crust, and was nice and light inside. Great tasting, but would have preferred it warm and with an accompanying oil and/or butter. I had a cosmo, and he had an extra dirty martini and an espresso martini. The drinks were strong and well crafted -- the bartenders were charming, attentive, and quick. One gave me a sample of a mezcal drink that I inquired about after observing him making something with tobasco, (I don't like mezcal or spicy drinks) and it was fantastic! Got together with two old friends at this place and loved it. The service was great. The food and drink was great. The wine list was appropriately priced and served well. It has the feeling of a Milanese or Parisian Brasserie. There were all kinds of people to observe enjoying birthdays, dates, whatever. Great people watching. And we had an excellent meal start to finish. I have never been there before, don't know its story. But I give it 5 stars for ambiance, space, food, drink and service. And overall vibe. Ok first things first....the bread is unreal and worth going for on its own!!!! Wow. Can't say enough good things about the bread. The mozzarella in Carrozza was really great as well. We loved that. After trying for weeks to get a reservation, we were excited to try the sister of a favorite American Bar, but were left unimpressed. In NYC there are TONS of restaurants. In general, the way to tell the better ones is how crowded they are. The good news/bad news about this is that you need to make reservations, sometimes weeks in advance. We got very lucky to find this gem in the West Village as we were walking by. The place has nice curb appeal. Additionally, their outside tables are truly outside, not in one of the plethora of covered and enclosed seating areas in the street that are so popular since COVID. Considering we walked in, they had a table ready for us rather quickly. Our server, Princess, was lovely and fantastic, helping us with menu suggestions. First, a basket of homemade bread arrived to the table along with pickled then marinated zucchini. What? Yes, folks. And they were awesome! Marinated in extra virgin olive oil, white wine vinegar, honey, and mint. The deliciousness ran deep! The bread was soft and buttery. Perfect for dunking (hint hint). For our first course, we ordered their charred eggplant (an enthusiastic endorsement by Princess) and Roman style artichokes. Both were excellent! I do not typically like eggplant, but this was delicious, as represented. They used Japanese eggplant. There was no bitterness at all. The black garlic glaze was like aged balsamic vinegar...thick and rich. The mache topping added to the visual attraction, but not much flavor. They topped each piece with spicy hazelnut. They had just the right bite. The artichokes were also tasty and still warm, dressed with kind of a vinaigrette. For our mains we decided to go with pasta. My wife ordered the linguine limone, which tasted like cacio e pepe with a squeeze of lemon. The pasta, on both dishes, was cooked nicely al dente. For my main course I ordered linguine with seabass, just because it sounded different. It also did not disappoint. Small, bite sized chunks of fish abounded in a grape tomato based sauce. I wasn't sure how the fresh dill would interact with the other flavors, but it actually played well with the rest of the flavors in the dish. Very tasty. The wine prices were a bit steep in my opinion, ranging (by the glass) between $23 and $35. The food, however, is fairly priced and is delicious. read more

This place had a great atmosphere, but we really did not enjoy our meal. For a Sunday night, it was pretty loud and busy, and they had good lighting. We did not have a reservation and the hostesses initially played with us, saying that it would be 30+ minutes to get a table. They told us to wait at the bar. We were reluctant to stay, but it was a special occasion and we were not in the mood to check out every restaurant in the neighborhood. This is the kind of place you go to get drunk, and then you go eat amazing food somewhere else. Great cocktails, friendly bar staff - but the food did not live up to my expectations whatsoever. Not to mention, the service was slacking when we got to our table! I ordered the risotto, and it was kind of like I was eating a kid's meal. There was no flavor. It tasted like I got 10 bites of an overly al dente Kraft mac and cheese, with about half an ounce of bone marrow sprinkled in the middle of the dish. Disappointing from the from the first spoonful. Another one of us got the fish. The mashed potatoes that came with that were so much better than my entree which we payed about $40 for. We also tried to order the pesto pasta dish, but they ran out of it and we had to get the seafood-y cherry tomato pasta. The tiramisu desert was like crunchy, salty butter. I know we were not expecting much from their kitchen, seeing as this is a fun drunk place, but we expected at least something. Come on man, this is the West Village!! So take notice, people of Yelp - This is not the kind of restaurant that is worth dropping 600 bucks on. If you want an amazing meal, there are plenty of other great restaurants in the area. It grew pretty tiring sitting at a tiny table and not being able to hear the person next to me, let alone our waiter. This place has a hugeee issue making it ghetto. They purposely pack too many people into the place, so you're basically sitting communal and can't hear anything. And it's not because of music, you can't even hear the music because the voices are so loud. But that's not the worst if it. The huge problem created is they don't have bathrooms to handle that many people. At dinner there was a legit line wrapping around the restaurant to where it was almost comical. I'm talking 15 to 20 people standing in line as if you're at some cheap nightclub (but this is dinner time). What does this mean for you? This means if you're coming here on a date, your date might be standing in line for 30 minutes while you sit there alone. If you sit anywhere on the left side of the restaurant, you will have people standing on top of you as you eat because the line wraps around all the tables. It's like sitting at the back of an airplane with the people standing on top of you waiting for the bathroom. If you're one of the people in line, you'll feel rude that you're standing over people as they eat. That situation is NOT ok for a restaurant charging the prices that they do. I'm fired up about how ridiculous it was and I, nor my date, had to go luckily. That's how atrocious it was looking at the sadness of the line while we drank our $20 drinks and whatever high priced food. I'm extremely ok with expensive drinks and dinner, but don't pack me in like a sardine to where I can't even hear the music let alone the person I'm with. The food was ok, but of course overpriced for what it was, but I went into this knowing that. The absolute insanity is their noise (bad noise, not good vibe noise) and their bathroom issue. We agreed we wouldn't consider coming back here again. The host was a little standoffish as soon we we checked in she told us we had to be done with dinner in an hour and 45 min, seemed unnecessary since this is called out on the menu as well (though it says 2 hours for a party of 4 which we were). Not a great way to start off the dinning experience already feeling rushed. if the waiter and kitchen are moving things along correctly this should feel seamless. They do have a good cocktail menu, I got the death in Venice which if you are a mezcal lover is great. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share for the table. We got the Polpette, Funghi Fritti, Tuna Crudo, and the octopus. My favorite was the Funghi Fritti they had a lot of flavor and wasn't a dish I have seen a lot. the Polpette also had a really great sauce that the meatballs sat on. For dinner we also split a couple of dishes. We did the butter chicken, Cherry tomato pasta, and the popular Ricotta pasta. The skin on the butter chicken was amazingly crispy and lived to the butter name but the chicken did taste a little dry. The tomato pasta was a very simple dish but delicious. The Ricotta pasta was like a grown up Mac and cheese but didn't feel to heavy. For dessert I got the lemon olive oil cake which I was really excited about. Most recently we tried the linguine with orange preserve (which we had seen multiple write ups about). You better believe it lived up to the hype! I don't know how to express the absolute heaven my tastebuds were in. Other favorites: roast oysters (I think I licked the bowl), ricotta pasta with house chili oil (like a drug. And their house made chili oil is out of this world). These are just some of our favorites, but truly everything we've had there has been mind blowing. I had a reservation here and needed to add one person onto the reservation and tried to call several times but was redirected back to Resy. I couldn't add a person on Resy so I added in the notes section that we would be having one more. We got there and they could not accommodate us at that time so they asked us to wait. After waiting we were told it was because the table next to our original table was being difficult and wouldn't leave after paying their check. We were sat outside which was not heated. After being seated we were served plain cups of hot water without explanation. I'm assuming this was to counteract the lack of a heater? Please keep in mind we couldn't cancel the reservation with out being charged $50 per person because it was within the 24 hour time limit. read more

Absolutely loved Saint Theo's. The vibe was amazing with really fun disco music playing and great decor. I ordered a martini, and we got a lot of great appetizers for the table -- beef meatballs, tuna crudo, garden salad and fried mushrooms. Everything was amazing, and that was a great mix for four hungry people. The bread they bring out is so warm and soft.. and they bring out more if you finish it, so beware that you might need to exercise some restraint there. For main course I had the butter chicken and a side of carrots - both were really good. We also got the mac & cheese type dish (think it's called the ricotta something) to split for the table and that was great to share. A friend of mine had the spaghetti and it was okay -- that was probably the only dish that wasn't excellent. I tried a friends Branzino and it was delicious. Overall, this place is super sexy and fun, and a great vibe like that often comes with lackluster food, but Saint Theo's has it all. The only downside is it's hard to get a reservation! Next time I might try getting a seat at the bar, as it's first come first serve. read more

Came here for a late birthday celebration and were warmly greeted by the staff at the front. We started off with cocktails and were pleasantly surprised by the Death in Venice and The Tadzio. Both drinks had savory notes that played well with the mezcal. The Death in Venice had a similar flavor profile to a mezcal mosquito. The complimentary bread came out next, along with a pickled zucchini, and made for a delicious start to the meal. The Tuna Crudo and Funghi Fritti were the appetizers we decided to go with this time, but there are so many others that we wanted to sample. Tuna Crudo was exquisite, thin ribbons of lemon zest complement the slices of tuna very well - one guest had a pistachio allergy so the restaurant was able to omit the crushed pistachios. The Funghi Fritti tasted like a rendition of calamari, credited to the anchovy emulsion and the texture of the fried mushrooms. There are four pastas to choose from so we decided to go with the Ricotta this time around but were torn between that, the Boar Ragu, and the Clam. The Ricotta itself was creamy, rich, and satisfying - it also came with a Calabrian Chili Oil which was lovely. We tried the Delicata Squash from the Vegetables section of the menu; it not very memorable and will try the Roasted Carrots next time. For dessert, we picked out the Chocolate Trifle, which was served in a cocktail glass and tasted like a cannoli. There were little chocolate kisses enveloped in layers of velvety chocolate cake. Overall, the Tuna Crudo and the Ricotta stood out as the two items that I would recommend to a friend. At first, the vibe seemed great but things quickly went downhill. The good: decor is on point and you should def take pics. Also my one cocktail with mezcal was tasty. The rest: having a reservation was pointless. We had to wait 45 mins only to be seated behind a column next to the bathroom line. We each got a drink comped bc of the wait but still didn't see our server for another half hour. The food left me stunned! It was so bad that it was unrecognizable-- we swore they brought it to the wrong table.The pesto was topped with some burned flakes of...possibly basil? The sauce looked black. The cacio e pepe (which should be only 3 ingredients) had about 5 other things in it like they meant to make carbonara but forgot the name of the dish. I was starving by that point, so I would have begrudgingly eaten carbonara except that in the dining capital of the world they couldn't be bothered to cook the pasta. It was nowhere near Al dente, it just barely boiled and then tossed onto the plate like they were in a rush. Inedible. Every single dish was inedible. The manager didn't even try to defend the food, he comped the entire meal without commenting. They know the food is terrible and refuse to fix the problem. The chef must be someone well connected bc there is no reason for it to be this bad. I never send food back to the kitchen but this was absolutely not edible. Three of us made a reso for 9:30 pm Wednesday 22 October to celebrate 30th birthday . We ended up getting a marvelous corner banquette table in the front, which we all appreciated greatly. Our waiter was amazing and extremely helpful with menu selections. We ordered oysters and meatballs to share, then pasta dishes and lamb chops as main courses. Food was exceptional and music loud and contemporary. The decor is like being in a "jewel box", or Venice after several cocktails! The most fun and special place downtown , as of now. It makes no sense how this restaurant is so popular. The food has absolutely no flavor. None of the entrees are seasoned in the slightest, the restaurant hires exclusively snails, and it's way too loud. I could've made a better meal at home, and I'm a terrible cook, but at least I own seasoning. Our waiter left without even telling us and by the end of the night there were only two busboys left to take care of the whole restaurant. We ended up waiting half an hour to even ask for the check and it took another 25 to get it. I need to preface every review I write by saying Yelp is a trash website and nobody writing reviews on here has any credibility (including myself, and I am eLiTe!) However: I do have a very experienced, delicate, sensual, and refined palette unlike the clowns in the other reviews calling the Mozzarella in Carozza, "Overpriced mozzarella sticks." I have had plenty of overpriced soggy mozz sticks in my day--these are nothing of the sort. Ignore that noise. The experience here is far from that. The cocktails are really exceptional. They are very creative, nicely presented, and bursting with flavor. The bread that comes with your meal is absolutely out of this world. It brings back feelings of nostalgia, but at the same time carries the exciting new flavors that this neighborhood craves. The star dish (the one you saw on TikTok) lives up to the hype. The chili oil they give you has some actual spice to it. Not a devastating amount of heat, but enough to wake you up.
