A few reviews mentioned how this place was better than Gotta Eatta Pita, Yalla, Kebab Shop -- I completely disagree. I didn't find the ingredients that fresh and proteins were kinda bland and cold. I was expecting the chicken kebab to be fresh and on a skewer, but the chicken is already in a container with some veggies in it. Didn't look appetizing. The meal comes with lentil soup but that was very disappointing -- it was watered down and tasted like chicken broth with lentil. I ended up taking a few bites and tossing my food. Someone asks for avocado and she proceeds to go to the kitchen and bring out a bag with bar codes and QR codes clearly ripped open and proceeded to squeeze the "fresh" food into little poop dollops into their bowls. Had a chance to check this place out for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I had no idea they offered a student discount as it was my first time here and I was wearing my UC Davis sweatshirt just cause it was cold out and we love a comfy outfit; but they saw that and immediately offered a student discount meal. They basically offer a chipotle style meal where you choose your protein and then the kind of box/plate you want. They have a great range of toppings and they charge i think $1 extra if you want avocado or feta cheese. Basically unlimited toppings and only extra charge for the two above. I got a salad box which can also be half rice half salad, with pomegranate chicken, tomato/cucumber, garlic spread, sumac onions, beets, and spicy tahini. The quantity is AMAZING and the meat is halal. I couldve gotten more toppings but i wasnt toooo hungry so i stuck with relatively simple toppings. I actually like the food here. When I worked in San Francisco, I would go there every week. This location does not like order aheads. We've ordered ahead 3 times and it's never ready on time. We just happened to find this place on the way to go somewhere else, but my boyfriend was excited to show me this restaurant as they have other locations around the city. It was my first time in. Similar to how Chipotle is organized, one goes and chooses between a pita, rice bowl, salad bowl etc and you go down the line to pick one or all of the items. My first impressions was that it was very clean and we were welcomed by the staff (which now a days doesn't always happen). They were eager to answer questions and even let us sample before deciding what to eat. The food was delicious and had many healthy options. We got to meet the owner, Mario who was very warm and inviting. He told us the grand opening will be tomorrow! We've come a couple times now and have enjoyed the food. The servings are so large, I can take left overs for lunch the next day! I've been spreading the word as I hope this place is a success at this location. I went around 3:00 and it was clear the proteins had been sitting in the steam table for too long. They were looking all dried out, which is a shame because I actually wanted the chicken shawarma. And they hadn't changed the soup either. My soup was all broth no lentils. So careful door dashing this place in the middle of the day. I wish they'd keep it fresher. Went to the soft opening today for complimentary lunch. As you can imagine they were pretty busy. The line went fairly quickly and I'm assuming a lot was taken to go we still found seating, there is a decent amount of seating inside and a small courtyard outside that had 6-7 tables as well. This is a Mediterranean restaurant set up in a chipotle/subway type manner. Food is pre-prepped and then you have it made to your style. Food was created and delivered in a friendly manner with smiles and great attitude from the staff. You can choose from wraps, rice bowls or salad bowls. Entrees also come with soup, today was a lentil soup which was very good. Vegetarian options available, though I had a mix of the chicken and steak today. The meats had wonderful flavor and were juicy and well prepared. Toppings and sides were all fresh, tasty and of great color. I tried both their mint and strawberry lemonades and each were very good. They have other drinks as well. Portions were large and prices decent for what you get. I'm glad to see another good dining option locally. Will definitely be coming back here soon. I also spoke with either a manager or owner on my way out, very friendly, welcoming and helpful. This is the type of business we need around here and the type of business I like to support. I forgot to review this restaurant. It is closed for covid-19 right now but I want to leave a review so the management can have time while they are closed to fix something that really bothered me when I was in the restaurant. The food was all good and the service was nice. I love Mediterranean food. I don't think it can be made poorly. The problem is that I was so happy that they had what looked like a good set up to recycle, compost, and sort garbage like Yalla. I was standing at the 3 bins trying to decide where one of my items would go and the very friendly employee said,"Oh don't worry about it. It all goes in to the same place anyway!" I was appalled. I was like, "What?! But it says recycle, compost, etc" and he was like like, "No, we just throw it into the same place." The air was punched out of me. I really care about recycling and the Earth and I really want to reward and praise places that use compostable containers or do not offer straws so this was really sad to me. I hope that they can take this time to get that portion up and running so that I can give them a good review on "plastic score" which is an app I use that you can rate the use of compostables/plastics at restaurants and assign them a "turtle" score when they re-open. read more

SAJJ has become a household favorite since we discovered it a few months ago. I love that many of the ingredients are locally sourced. Have tried both the chicken shawarma rice bowl and a falafel rice bowl. Both the chicken and the falafel were delicious and the bowl was easily enough for two meals. (Hint - falafel is really only good the day it's made, trust me on this one). Love that you can pick and choose any of the toppings for a flat fee and the free lentil soup is delicious.
