Trying to find a decent local sushi joint in the neighborhood has been nothing but swingin' and missin' until we happened upon Sake Toro. Its a very small corner restaurant in Frisco Square. The first thing you notice about the restaurant is it's tank of jelly fish behind the hostess stand. That's just cool...maybe cooler after a few hot sakes too! The staff is extremely friendly and it seems that everyone is there to serve you; servers, manager, owners. If they have free time they are using it to make sure you have everything you need. We opted for the sushi bar, and it turns out that the two sushi chefs here aren't as interactive with the diners like other places. They have quite an extensive hot entree menu for a sushi restaurant. They have your typical rolls, sushi and sashimi, but what they are known for are their specialty rolls. The names are fun, playful names, that are definitely a conversation piece for the table; Ex Girlfriend Roll, Double D roll, Something Wrong roll, Say My Name roll, Screaming O roll...and when the song Birthday Sex comes on (it did)...what kindda sushi place is this?! Speaking of the music...it was a mixture of American and Asian hip hop, a first for me. Even the sushi chef was bouncing back and forth. The food: Spicy Tuna roll was good and had plenty of spice to it. The Tempura roll was generous with plenty of shrimp wrap in soy paper and the Dancing Eel roll had all kinds of flavors going on between the eel, spicy tuna, cucumber and eel sauce. My only complaint is that the rolls were loose and were easy to come apart. Sake Toro is definitely a step away from the norm of sushi restaurants in Dallas. It's a hike for Dallasites but it's worth the trip. read more

I eat at quite a few sushi places on travel and for me, the sushi and service of this place were outstanding. I started with the green salad, miso soup and a bottle of Nigori unfiltered sake. Then, I had the ultimate vegetarian roll and avocado maki. TBH, you can tell a ton about a sushi restaurant by a simple maki roll. This was perfect. Have been here a good number of times with great results every time. Tonight it was the Bluefin Toro and Sake Toro that put me on the edge. The Sushi Bomb pushed me over. It was fantastic. So here's the deal...my wife and I are legit sushi heads. We met over sushi, married over sushi,and probably eat it 2-3 times a week. We really love this place and KC truly rocks it on the roll selection! I only have one complaint...what is up with never having ice?? I don't mean to sound overly picky but I tend to like a lot of ice in my water or Dr. Pepper. Can we maybe chip in as a community and hook them up with a killer ice machine?! Asking for a friend. I love this place. It's small and it's family owned. It's always a pleasure to see how KC staffs his restaurant.... he is teaching folks how a business needs to be run. The sushi is always fresh, always portioned properly and always comes to the table with me ready to eat it all!! Yes sometimes they're busy , yes sometimes they're human. But that's the point. They always treat me and my family with courtesy and kindness. The food is always great and sometimes it is exceptional. I've been coming here since 2011. From the beginning, no one noticed us when we walked in and we stood there waiting to be seated for five minutes and no one said a word. Once we got seated no one came to take our order. Once we gave them our order after we flagged them down ourselves, each plate was brought out individually with about 10 minutes in between. After that, I was glutened with soy sauce that was on the roll- which was not listed on the roll in the menu. Fair to say it was not our one of our best dining experiences. My husband and I are avid sushi lovers. This restaurant has the best original sushi rolls we have had...anywhere! It is a boutique restaurant in the heart of main street Frisco. After amazing sushi you can walk to a movie in the old town Square. Taylor was our waitress and she was so informative and educational about 5he menu and offered great advice. I spent a lot of time this morning debating on whether or not I would give Sake Toro 5 stars or 4. The food was great, the service was incredible and the restaurant was pretty damn cool by itself. After a lot of soul searching I decided to wait and give 5 stars in an update after I've had a chance to sample more of the menu. After sitting on this review for 30 minutes I changed my mind to 5. It's my review, I'm allowed. I'll start by saying HOT DAMN! Getting here was a trek! 15 miles one way and definitely worth it! We walked in and the first thing I noticed was a tank filled with jellyfish. Serious mother effing jellyfish, son! I could have honestly stood there staring for another 10 or 15 minutes, but there was food to be eaten. I've run the gauntlet when it comes to pre-meal things served to you at sushi restaurants. Seaweed salad, jellyfish salad, veggies with ranch dressing, nuts, it goes on and on and on. After last night I can chalk edamame onto that list as well. Salted and still hot, it was a great way to start things out (especially since I typically like to order a bowl as an app). With the edamame helping to restore our blood sugar levels, we decided on an order of pork gyoza as our real appetizer. The dumplings came out and I was proud to see that they serve 6 (a lot of places serve 5. . .how the hell do you split 5 dumplings?!) so there would be no dumpling disputes. They were perfectly steamed and the pork had a nice hint of ginger, garlic and scallion to it. The ponzu sauce had a nice crisp citrus flavor to it that was great with the saltiness of the pork. We ordered 3 rolls (the ex-girlfriend, something wrong, sexy mama) and a killer special called karai. My favorite roll by was the ex-girlfriend. I'm glad my gf didn't let the fact that it was our Valentine's Day dinner deter her from wanting to try this one either. I am not exaggerating when I say I would start wars for food like this. Layers of yellowtail, salmon, ahi and avocado all rolled up and covered with fried halibut and crispy spicy flakes. The fish was so fresh I half expected it to start moving on me (which would have been cool because then I would have eaten live fish a la Bear Grylls). The salmon practically melted in your mouth. The halibut didn't lose its crunch even though it was the last thing eaten on the table. It was sweet and spicy with a little acidity from the sauce they put on it. Hands down one of the best rolls I've eaten in Dallas. The Karai caught me off guard, but was probably my favorite dish of the entire night. I expected a roll but they brought out a bowl filled to the brim with chunks of yellow tail, halibut and ahi mixed with squash, zucchini, fresh jalapeno and red onion all mixed in a light sauce and special blend of the chef's spices. The seasoning really helped bring out the taste of the fish and once again I was blown away by the freshness of it all. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if their back kitchen area consisted of nothing but a monster fish tank. The service was awesome. Our drinks never went empty, the staff was polite and very helpful and our food was served incredibly quick. I'm bummed this place is so far because I think I'm going to have a hard time readjusting to the joints I hit on a more regular basis. Everyone should try this place. Live too far away? We have been here a few times for dinner for sushi and today we tried lunch. This place is way over rated. Overall the customer service is not good and the food is pretty blah as well. They were short staffed today and my food came out a good 5 minutes or more before my husbands. I had the fried rice and he had the udon noodles. We both felt the dishes were just ok. The restaurant was also pretty dirty with tables that needed to be bussed and a pile of dirty dishes sitting on a cart outside the restroom. We will not be returning. This is honestly one of our favorite places to eat in Downtown Frisco. It has some of the best sushi we've tasted, and we've been on the east coast and west coast. It's a legit place to try! The service is excellent & the price is standard for sushi (which is higher than your average burger joint). However, there are three things that keep this from being a 5 star review. First, and this is the biggest, there are always flies in the place buzzing around which makes me concerned about the cleanliness (which is double scary since it's a sushi joint). The second is that depending on where you sit, the tables can be small & thus very little privacy or space for your dinner. The last is that their drink-ware is plastic thus your water is never cold, and the beer comes in a cold glass but the kegs must not work properly as the beer is a tad warmer than a standard place. This restaurant is very overpriced for the quality. We started with edamame and were served a handful for $5.00. It tasted fine, hard to screw it up....next we ordered three overpriced sushi rolls that were severely lacking in flavor. We ordered the EX-boyfriend, Boston, and love me long time. I've been here many times in the past. It's been about a year, though. I won't be back again. First the good... We were seated immediately. It was a Tuesday night and they were fairly busy. The bad... After being seated drinks came in a fairly reasonable time but when I ordered a sunkist or similar orange soda I was given orange juice. Next, it took about 45 minutes for the edamame appetizer to come out after asking twice. About half of the beans were cold. Not great in general. After another twenty minutes some of our rolls came out. Now don't get me wrong. I understand that in sushi places rolls don't always cone at the exact same time. I eat plenty of sushi to know how things can flow. Of the rolls that came out there were a few problems. First, the wife's crunch roll that is listed as "cooked" and has tempura shrimp was cold. Previous experiences this roll was hot. This time is was cold, like warm at best. We asked about it. Waitresses response was that sometimes they are warm, but they cook the shrimp earlier, but not always. So basically, she's saying they produce inconsistent results. Then there's the hand roll. Tasted pretty good, but they've changed the wrapper. The new one isn't as tasty or tender. Not impressed. Final nail in the coffin was my son's Chicken Katsu. Not only did it come out after everything else, but again I asked two different people about it. I was able to slowly finish my rolls along with the cold crunch roll my wife didn't want before it ever came out. Two+ hours and $68 I won't get back. No thanks. Not again. ...one other note. Many of the rolls have taken on more adult names. ...Donkey Show, Screaming Orgasm, and similar. If that kind of thing bothers you, buyer beware. read more

Overall all the food here is too salty. Rolls... Didn't have enough rice. Rice was too soggy, and on top of that they had wet sauce on the plate that made sushi worse. Gyoza.. Im pretty sure they didnt make that. It comes in a package. So it was pretty good. Just pan fried it. I prolly liked it better steamed. Pork katsu... I have never ever been to a japanese restaurant where they didn't serve a bowl of rice, miso soup, and side salad with a meal like that. None of it came with the pork katsu. NONE! I had to ask for a bowl of rice. And the side came with the pork katsu was stir fried veggies. Very salty and greasy. Lastly, the pork itself!!! OMG. It was so dry. DRY!!! Ordered....waited.... was famished... after about 45 mins, noticed everyone that came after, were already eating...dear server came and apologized...apparently our orders were "deleted" ?? I'm a Frisco old-timer. I remember when the only restaurant in town was the DQ and the only traffic signal was a red flashing light on the corner of 121 and Preston. So, I had to be dragged to this place. The idea of good sushi in Frisco was absolutely unfathomable to me. Top it off with the fact I now live near a very large Japanese community in Southern Cal and I was really not looking forward to sushi here. I was totally, completely wrong. Sake Toro has done a very good job bringing quality fish and fantastic preparation and presentation to Frisco. The people are very friendly (they were very good at explaining things to sushi-beginners) and the ambiance is great. This is the best sushi I've had in in TX. :-) A great step in the development of Frisco. read more

Ok, the hype and talk around town about this place it OUTRAGEOUS! I heard so many great things about it before checking it out, and when walking into the door to finally try it myself I was kind of worried that I would be let down by the great reviews. The service needs some help, but even as an "Industry Person" I am ok with that. The food knocked me off of my feet. The prices were absolutely reasonable, and the sushi I had was outstanding. I had the "Say My Name" roll... and yes, it tasted as sexy as the name ;) The owner Kasey came out behind the sushi bar after I had been there for a while, and if I had not been won over yet... he did it. He is a great guy with a genuine intention to provide Frisco with a cool, well priced, not too cliche sushi joint. Best sushi in DFW. I've tried LOTS of sushi places throughout the country over the last 15 years and this is my new found favorite. Better than Raa, Naan (Dallas and Plano), Genroku, Deep Sushi, Densetsu, Blue Fish, Geisha... (though I havent tried $$$ Nobu or Yutaka). I prepare sushi at home several times a week and keep my kitchen stocked with sake, anaki, toro, unagi, ono and everyhting else to go along with it. I'm no Jiro, but I know my sushi. I've been to Sake Toro about a half dozen times and every time was excellent. Service is always at least good, if not excellent. Sometimes sushi is a little slow, but there's a reason for that... it takes time to make. The last time I went, I asked KC to make me a $50 omekase (I guess he's the sushi manager). Here's what I got for $50 (he knows what I like): 2 orders (4 pieces) of chu toro nigiri: best damn chu toro I've ever had... so buttery! few pieces of assorted nigiri (salmon, yellow tail, halibut and maybe tuna): all were garnished and dressed to perfection. KC hand roll (soy wrapper, shrimp tempura, eel sauce, spicy tuna and crab): my favorite, always order it funky shooter (not sure if it had a name, but it was a shot glass with ponzu, raw quail egg, raw oyster, masago and maybe a few other secret ingredients): WEIRD but interesting... that's why I like omekase. caterpillar roll: excellent crunchy roll: excellent and last was a fried avocado served over a bed of crab, topped with spicy tuna (sort of like dinner version of the KC hand roll... sort of): this was ok, not my favorite. maybe would have enjoyed it more if i wasnt SO STUFFED already. so for $50 I got about $35 worth of chu toro, another $15 in assorted nigiri, a priceless shooter (lol), easy $20 in rolls, plus the avocado thing. DEFINITELY got my money's worth. My advice, if you go and dont mind dropping $50 on a GREAT sushi dinner, ask for KC and tell him the guy named Jacob that always orders omekase sent you :) PROS: pretty much everything, but there chefs are all very well trained. they have a GREAT selection of fish. if I go to a sushi bar and ask for toro and they have it (and its good), thats always a good sign. CONS: a little pricey, my wife and I usually drop $100 for the two of us... but I eat like a pig. even though I listed it as a con, the quality of fish is totally worth the price. also, no real wasabi :( but they do have wasabi kazami (pickled wasabi) that they use to garnish some fish OVERALL: BEST SUSHI IN TOWN! read more

I've been to Sake Toro too many times to count and I've always really enjoyed it. I work close by and have taken and recommended many people to eat here. Sadly dining here last night was terrible enough I will most likely never return. The waiter was very young and appeared completely clueless on how to wait tables. He took our drink order (there were 3 of us) - 2 of us ordered alcoholic drinks and waters to go with. He returned with the drinks but no waters. When he returned we put in our orders. They had put our orders together on one plate. I'm not sure why they did that as we weren't sharing - so we had to split it up somehow. After our food was delivered we had to wait 10 minutes to eat because we didn't have plates, cups for soy sauce, or wasabi & ginger. I had to get his attention to request these items along with the waters we were still missing. I also ordered another drink. The drink never came. This was the last time our waiter came to our table. When we finished our meal somebody did eventually come over to take a couple of plates away. The plates were dropped and broken - not a big deal but we were waiting patiently for the check since we realized we wouldn't be getting the drink orders. We waited and waited and waited. I would say 20-30 minutes passed after our meal where we were staring down and raising our hands trying to flag down anybody at this point. Our original waiter would not make eye contact with us. We literally joked about getting up and walking behind the sushi bar to get one of the chefs to help us. I finally said "excuse me" really loud to another waitress. She seemed bothered I flagged her down but what else were we suppose to do? We told her how to split the check. The check came with the drink that was ordered and never received along with edamame? in which we had never ordered or received. I had to once again wait about 10 minutes before flagging down the girl and explaining there were items on the receipt we never ordered or received. There were no apologies - she acted as if we were simply trying to get out of paying for things. The 3 of us were terribly frustrated and disappointed upon finally getting to leave. Last night was a one star experience. I gave 2 stars because I have thoroughly enjoyed this place in the past. read more

I was not impressed with Sake Toro, at all. With myriad options to choose from, when it comes to sushi in the Metroplex, there are plenty of other places, most with better pricing. Before I say anything else negative, though, the positives are that, of the three that we tried, both the Philly and the Crazy Horse were really good. Not worth another trip here, but yeah. Though our waitress was, herself, friendly enough, she didn't do a great job. The restaurant wasn't very full, at all, yet we didn't get refills until we were leaving. It wasn't very full, yet the workers there acted as though were all in a huge hurry. Last, I thought that the spicy tuna was universal? I'll put it this way...whatever was in that thing tastes like the smell of one of my daughter's used pull-ups. My second bite of the stuff, I just barely choked down.
