The server delivered two small pies, both unevenly cooked and burned. She explained that these were "New Haven" style pies, and this is how they are baked and served. If I wanted a medium pie, she would order one for me and I could take it home. The cooks were very young, clearly inexperienced and having a grand old time chatting it up and goofing off. There is an art to using a wood-fired oven. They haven't come close to mastering it. I have been eating at Sally's in New Haven since the 1960's and am well acquainted with New Haven style pies and these were just burnt. We'll certainly give it another try after a few weeks to let them get a bit more established, but for almost fifty bucks, I expect a lot more quality control. read more

Went there Saturday with my son on our way back home to Long Island from Mohegan sun. We walked in with no reservation and it was packed and reservations were filled for next 2 hours. I explained to the hostess Tonya that we would be really quick and already knew what we wanted if she could squeeze us in. I told her we were ordering a clam pie and an order of Calamari. She suggested we try the clam pie with bacon as it was her favorite. Within 15 minutes she was able to squeeze us in and as promised we were very quick. Service was excellent and friendly ( Paul or server). Tonya came by to check on us and asked if we ordered the clam pie with bacon. I told her no not this time but would definitely try in future. When Paul brought the check he said wait a few minutes we have a clam pie with bacon for you to go coming out. WOW I was blown away, a small but awesome gesture from Tonya and staff. Very disappointed. Been eating at Sally's New Haven for 20+ years. I want this place to succeed but for the love of god the new owner needs to get Bob and Rick in there to get this back on course. Who came up with the idea of changing the ingredients that were used by the Consiglios? Clam, sauce, special pies, all taste different? Did they stop adding the oil at the end? Pizza is dry, way over burned on bottom, and lacks the rich sweet flavor of sauce, onions, clams etc. Recommendation: forget the new menu items and get the pizza right! Till then I'll be at Pepe's. Been wanting to go here for a while and it didn't disappoint. Ambiance was not great but it's OK. We, three of us, got a large cheese pizza to share. Disappointed and frustrated -- expected far better from such a well-known name. We live in Manhattan and were passing through the area when we decided to stop in for a quick dinner to at this highly regarded pizza spot. We started with a house salad, which was actually very good, along with a glass of wine. But the experience went downhill quickly. Almost immediately after we sat down, fruit flies began to swarm around us -- some even landed in our salad. We had to request new plates before the pizza even arrived because we were scooping dead flies out of our food. Throughout the entire meal, we were constantly swatting flies away. I initially mentioned the issue to our server, who simply said "sorry about that" and gave us clean plates. That was it. The service overall was slow, even though the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Once we finished our pizza (which we had to eat while dealing with these flies), I sat with my credit card in hand, trying to get someone's attention. The manager looked over multiple times but didn't approach until I flagged him down directly. Even then, when we showed him the flies still hovering around and on the wall next to us, his response was dismissive at best. Barely an apology, and certainly no acknowledgment of how unacceptable that dining experience was -- especially at a place that charges $90 for a simple meal for two. For the record, I wasn't looking for anything comped (I've worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade), but a sincere apology and some level of concern would've gone a long way. For a restaurant with such a big reputation -- especially an Italian institution -- this was shockingly poor. Do better. I won't be returning and recommend. read more

First time eating at Sally's! My fiancé and I came for our anniversary during lunch time and the service was great! Nice modern spacious location with ample parking. We came specifically to this location because the New Haven one does not have the Calabrian stinger pie. We love all things with Calabrian chillies. It has been a long time since I had Sally's NH but it was excellent in the past. Tried the Fairfield location and we were disappointed. Order a white clam + shrimp, an expensive pie, but it wasn't good. Not really generous with the topping for the price. Pepe's makes this pie to perfection. Seems like a corporate run chain now given their expansion. Two other pies were just ok. Pepe has expanded as well but the Fairfield location does a great job. Pretty much the same as any place that delivers. Crust was crispy but that's where the good ended. Sauce was bland, cheese was barely there with no crunch or string to it. Sally's is hands down one of New Haven's most iconic pizza shops. I ordered a large half cheese and half pepperoni pizza over-the-phone. The employee was very nice and pleasant to speak with. When arrived at Sally's, the pizza was already boxed up and ready-to-go. I really enjoyed the traditional white interior of the pizza shop along with the gargantuan wood-fire oven. My wife called three days ahead to schedule a reservation at the Fairfield location. We live in new haven and understood that this location was not big enough( original Sally's) for our family that came from Hawaii and Arizona for our first new born. We spoke every highly of sally and how great the service new haven is and thought it was going to reflect the same at this location. The reservation was for a party of 11 which included 2 kids under the age of 4, wife called around noon which for this location only take out was operating. They replied saying they will confirm the reservation on there end to make sure, yet no one called to confirm(i mean how do you not prepare for that big of a party) . When we arrived the waiter notified us that the other big tables were for people who made reservations and made us sit at two different tables, didnt allow us to put the tables together to accommodate for our big family. Our waiter rather stand there and debate about policy instead of having her manager verify everything. I spoke with the manager at the time and she informed us she apologize for the inconvenience, they can not move tables to accommodate, didnt offer the booster seats for the kids and they are sorry. I was frustrated because now our big family are talking across the tables , that are like 5 feet apart, this was also confusing the waiters thinking we were two different family's. The manager understood the miscommunication between take out operations making the reservation and the sit in restaurant for confirming. So for future family just make sure you talk to some at the sit in restaurant so this bs doesn't happen to you. At the end our family from Hawaii just had to accept that sally was not going to accommodate the sitting arrangement, we had the little kids sit in the adult chairs , had couple glass break since the kids were able to just walk around , just a mess and At the end we got new waiter, service was okay , and some items were discounted for the inconvenience. We are regulars at the new haven location and love sallys just very disappointed that is located was not up to standard so for this location 2 stars. Sally's is my favorite pizza! Was planning to go to the one in New Haven but it was way too busy so I came to the one in Fairfield. The other Frank Pepe's locations not in new haven are no good, so I wasn't sure if this Sally's would be good, but it def was! Tastes almost as good as the new haven location. The mozzarella is the best, and I got the large for $30. It wasn't super busy, but we still had to wait around 30 minutes for it (we got it to go). I've been to this new commerce street location twice since it opened, and while it's understandable that the business has to work out some kinks, both times we had a different but really inexperienced server. Which would lead me to believe that there is more training that needs to be done. The cocktails and/or pitchers of beer were left on the bar for quite a while before the servers were checking on them to actually bring them to the table. We were close enough to the bar to see them sitting there for almost 10 minutes at a time. It's not a very big location so be prepared to sit in a communal setting, which means that you're going to be at a table with strangers if you are not lucky enough to get a booth. The bar is small, I didn't count the seats, but it could not seat more than 8-10 people. * On a side note: I've been trying to order takeout since they opened and I've been on hold for up to 45 minutes before hanging up, the hold music is AWFUL. We ordered a medium regular cheese pizza and as you can see from the photo it was not just burnt, but CHARRED. This is by far the WORST pizza I ever had!!! I am a pizza lover and wanted to try this spot and left extremely disappointed. To begin, they have way more staff than they did customers. I'm going to give Sally's five stars, because although they didn't check off all of my boxes, it is a great pie! Quality ingredients, coal fired goodness, and still a family-run business. I ordered a tomato and mozzarella pie (traditional), and a white pie with garlic, mozzarella and thin-sliced tomatoes. Both pies were excellently made, and cooked to perfection. If I read one more review that says the crust was burnt, I'm gonna barf in my loafers. It's supposed to be charred, that adds another layer of flavor! One more thing I need to get off of my chest: Pizza should not have the stiffness of cardboard. It should have a good amount of gooey cheese, go limp when you grab a slice, and have some oil that drools down your chin and if you're messy, may even get on your clothes. This is where Sally's disappointed me the most. The crust was too uniform, the char edges not puffed up enough, and there was not enough cheese for my liking. But that's my personal preference. This is for the Fairfield restaurant. Many other reviews here are for New Haven store. Beware there's a huge difference in every aspect. We waited over an over an hour after we sat down for pizza. The white clam pizza is bland and tasteless and the margarita pizza is just edible. Worst white clam pizza ever. A sin in Connecticut. The nightclub/music atmosphere is more distracting than cool. My family and I had a great experience at Sally's for dinner tonight! The service was impeccable, and our waitress was more than happy to share some backstory on Sally's before taking our order. I've only eaten in the restaurant once. We had a tomato pizza which was delicious! Picked up a cheese pizza was also delicious! Tonight I picked up the charred brussel sprouts which were wonderful and cooked exactly as I like them. I didn't enjoy the meatballs - the consistency was just right (not dry or tightly packed). However they were bland, bland, bland! The garlic bread was buttery and nicely toasted, but couldn't smell or taste even a hint of garlic and whatever they added to the bread was spicy hot - I had to keep taking sips of soda to stop the burning.
