I had a groupon for a wax here and I'm impressed. It was my first wax and I was sccaaaared. I had Anjelie and she was very calm and I enjoyed her demeanor during such an event. She talked to me during the whole thing to try and keep my mind off the event. Although it was not an enjoyable procedure it was my first one so I have nothing else to compare it to. I thought it was a nice experience though and the salon is very cute and you go upstairs to the spa for waxing which I liked because it was private. I love that they are open on Sundays and it wasn't crazy busy, it's a big salon and even given that I had a groupon I was able to book an appointment calling a week ahead and my roommate was able to get an appointment calling the day of so we could go together. read more

Absolutely loved my entire experience and haircut and balayage with salon 1800! It was my first experience at the salon and immediately felt welcome. I had Pedro who was not only one of the nicest stylists i ever had but right away had a vision for my hair that also matched what i wanted. I had a great conversation during the entire process with him--not forced, but a genuine one. He made my hair look fuller and more natural, even with giving me a more blonde look which could've turned out to be fake looking. Instead i walked out with a natural look I'm in love with. I have been going to Zulie for a year now for color and haircuts and she is amazing. Zulie does a great job with my hair and really listens to what I want. The salon itself is really great as well with amazing products and a professional staff. My hairstylist and colorist left me to live in Texas with his doctor husband *sigh* so I was looking for a new salon. Through a website offering promos from various salons, I came across Salon 1800 on Armitage. In the end, I took advantage of their 30% off Sun-Thursday before 3:00pm promotion, which is a really nice deal. Miranda, my stylist and colorist, did a wonderful job. She immediately deduced that I was little depressed about the growing out of my color (granted, I was way overdue for touch-up) that had turned pretty red. I respected her color decision to fix the problem, and it was AMAZING. Great color, good partial highlights on top to give it more depth. I'm always an artist's best friend or worst nightmare -- I say simply, "give me something easy to style that works with my hair texture, no bangs because I have a cowlick in front that will make bangs impossible, but other than that, do as you will!!" I trust that the stylist's training gives them better knowledge on what will work with my fine, wavy hair and face shape than I. Admittedly, when I looked around the salon and saw a lot of that long, straight, blond highlighted Lincoln Park hair, I was worried that I would get the same treatment. But Miranda gave me a look that worked for my age, hair type, face, and needs (I am an office professional, but don't want a regimented banker's bob look, and I don't spend any time on my hair other than blow drying). Thank goodness for the 30% discount or it would be hard for me to keep going to see Miranda. I've now been twice and have been very pleased, especially with the color. We went a little blonder this last time for spring, and her styling my hair after the color and cut was AWESOME -- I loved it, although regrettably couldn't reproduce it exactly at home on my own (I'm lazy and don't have patience for hair - makeup yes, hair no). Staff is friendly and helpful overall. The layout/design of the place may not be for everyone as it has a more urban, industrial vibe. Plenty of product to buy, including Bumble and Bumble and other higher-end brands. I've also been to the Salon 1800 on North Avenue, and they do have a long appreciateship/training program for new stylists so you can feel confident that even their young stylists have worked their way up from "intern" to "pro". I am obsessed with Salon 1800! They are constantly rolling out new products, services and get this... DEALS! I see Kelly for my color and cuts and Olga for my wax services. Both are fantastic. Kelly is so much fun. I could spend every day in her chair. She has a certain nack for changing up my hair every time I see her, but not making the change obvious so I don't ever get bored, but I also don't shock people with new hair every 6 weeks. LOVE HER! Waxing, haircuts, and manicures are all excellent here. I get a Brazilian from Juila once a month. She's great! She's chatty (great when I want to think about something else), fast, and as painless as possible. It takes about 15 minutes and I'm always pleased with the results. $55 for a Brazilian, but if you pre-book it's only $50. Rita is my hair stylist. She's adventurous and trendy with hair. Rather than just blowing out my new haircut she volumized, curled, and styled it without my asking and without charging extra. I thought it was just because I mentioned I was going out to dinner with my boyfriend that night, but she did the same the next time and the time after as well. Huge bonus! My hair never looked so good. Plus, at the great price of $50 for a haircut (no highlights or dye), you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal at a nice salon. I never pay to get manicures. They always chip and I pick at my hands and nails to much to make them worthwhile. Well, it had been a busy week at work and my hands were in dire need of some buffing, so I decided to get a manicure. $20 for a standard manicure (a little pricey, but reasonable I thought) and my nails have never lasted so long. Another great thing about Salon 1800 is they are always offering a deal. I first went here because I got a $20 off coupon in the mail when I first moved to Chicago. I was looking for a new hairdresser at Salon 1800 since my old guy had left (who wasn't even that great) and was referred to Valerie from a friend. I went this past weekend - she was amazing! She was super honest, which I prefer when it comes to someone cutting my thick hair. She knew exactly what she was doing especially when it came to thinning out. She used a few products on my hair, which I ended up loving and purchasing one, but wasn't salesy or forcing me to buy them. Our conversations were great, she's super hilarious and makes you feel comfortable in her chair. I would absolutely recommend Valerie to someone looking for a new hair stylist. I have been seeing Jade at Salon 1800 consecutively for two plus years. I'm very particular about my hair and in the past, have changed stylists after every color, just to see if someone could finally understand what I was looking for. Jade always seems to know exactly what I want, even if I don't even really know how to explain it. She nails my color every time (whether it be dark, light for summer, and even ombre). I love this salon. It is conveniently located and easy to find street parking. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. I've been seeing Sarah for a few years now. Sarah is an exceptional stylist! You had the confidence that she really knows what she is doing from start to finish. She asks the right questions, to achieve desired results. I always walk out of the salon with exactly what I wanted. She makes great product recommendations and has worked me to make sure that my hair is healthy. I don't ever write Yelp reviews but I feel like I truly owe it to myself to bid farewell to Salon 1800 after what they've done to me for the past 5 or so years. I won't go into major detail, but somehow every time I visit I end up being charged $50 more than what I expect. Even when I was younger I would get a service done and my mom would be confused in the end as to why they would give her the maxed-out tab, and then offer a strange excuse as to why they did it. Yesterday was the last straw, in which both my friend and I were charged more than double for a toner that I was used to paying $40 for. A toner is now a process in which the stylist squirts liquid into your hair for, (apparently), $90 and then sends you to dry it yourself. I'm just over it, and officially finding a new salon. read more

Oh, Salon 1800, how I took you for granted! I lived in Chicago for just over 2 years, and got my hair cut at Salon 1800 over the course of the last year and a half. The stylists there were wonderful - very knowledgeable, nice, and accomodating. Mackenzie, in particular, knew my hair better than I did. I would come in with a crazy idea and she would give me the sane half-cousin version. Very, very good idea. I have since moved to NYC, and you would think in a city this large I could find a replacement salon. But, alas, I cannot find one to equal Salon 1800. I am now growing out a semi-mullet Mrs. Brady-esque hair cut right now, and I got all nostalgic about the good ole days when I had nice hair cuts from Salon 1800. Le sigh. read more

Been seeing my girl Shelly here for about 1 year now. She is fantastic for haircuts and single-process color. The color she does for me is perfection. The actual salon services here are top-notch. The girls that work at front desk are for the most part god awful (incompetent.... snotty.... lazy... i could probably go on), but I'm not exactly going to the salon to become friends with the receptionist. Still stickin' with my 3 stars, but I just wanted to give an update on my no-chip manicure. It ended up lasting over 2 weeks. There was one itty bitty chip on one nail after about a week and a half, but no real chipping until the 2 week mark. If I could afford no-chips, they would definitely be worth it. I've been coming to Salon 1800 for over 6 years! I've been very please with my services so far. For hair cuts I've seen: Edward (miss you lots can't wait till you come home), Laura (Drew), Stevie and just saw Bobbi today, she's amazing, she cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. I also got to meet Rene who shampooed my hair, she's amazing, she even gave me a neck massage (i was in desperate need of one) and she's great to talk to. For my facials I see Soffie and Dana (Lincoln Park) and Maria (old town), Maria is great when you want a relaxing facial, but Soffie DEEP cleans you, Dana is great too! I agree with the comment about the front desk girls, they are not the most helpful. Today I had an appointment at 5pm and these girls forgot all about me and I didn't even get shampooed till 5:30...it's ok thought because Bobbi still got me outta there by 6pm and did a fabulous job!!! And for the record to the women who complained about their haircut...if you really didn't like it that much....why didn't you speak up...more importantly why would you pay for it? Use me as a referral if you decide to see Bobbi and you will get $5 off your first haircut! read more

Since this place moved to it's new location (a little farther from the El), business has been down, but don't let that trick you into thinking this isn't a quality salon. I've been seeing my guy there for about a year. This place has stringent guidelines in place to make sure that whomever touches your hair has been well educated. Their prices are in line with other salons in the area. The front desk staff is always courteous and friendly to me, and my guy always makes sure I'm comfortable, hydrated and equipped with a juicy Us magazine! The only thing I'll ding them on is they close early on Friday's if they are slow - rather frustrating when you make a special trip out there to buy shampoo within their business hours, and they are not open. read more

Just read Maria M's review of Valerie from 7/7/2017 and OMG, we just had an oddly similar experience with Valerie. Absolutely, no people skills whatsoever and a big problem for Salon 1800. We strongly agree with Maria's overall review of this woman - she tells you your hair is damaged, you'll need to spend more money than you thought and how her 34-years of experience are all you need to know - so just shut-up or get out! This woman convinced my daughter (the one getting her hair colored) that she would throw-in a free cut and blow dry if she could write a good review on Yelp. This was after upsetting my daughter by telling her she would have to up-charge her on her highlights as it required a second color process. And this was while my daughter was already in the chair and had explained to Valerie that she budgeted only for the price initially quoted. Valerie also insisted on cash only for her tip. So my daughter took a taxi to and from RU to Lincoln Park; was told her hair was already damaged from past coloring; got up-charged on the highlights; was told she would need to pay the tip in cash; paid ATM fees associated with a bank not our own, and in the end didn't even get the color she requested. And this was after showing Valerie a headshot before the appointment started. To add more insult, Valerie insisted the color did match the color in the headshot. Biggest problem here is this woman is just not a nice person and is, clearly, a big problem for Salon 1800. In fairness, the manager, Caitlyn, did a wonderful job handling the entire situation. She's very professional and experienced. Caitlyn arranged for my daughter to see another more competent stylist to correct the mistakes made by Valerie. In the best interest of Salon 1800, do yourselves a favor and cut ties with Valerie sooner than later. read more

The 24-hour cancellation policy is fine--but they should be understanding as well. I had a pedicure appointment for today at 3pm and called at 11:30 am as my flight from NYC is delayed and I get back at 6pm. The receptionist ridiculously reminded me of the 24 hour policy after she agreed to waive it this time but make sure to remind me to remember that policy for the future. I told her I would do that as soon as United airlines let people know 24 hours in advance if their flight was going to be late. Give me a break! read more

Like Anna R., Fabiola is my girl, and she is FANTASTIC! She's a great person to talk to, makes the experience almost pleasant, with a minimal amount of pain. This is also a great place to get your hair and nails done- My mom had her hair done here, I used to get my hair cut as well but Nikki is no longer there, and I've had other treatments as well. I have to say I am really surprised by all the bad reviews. Granted, I usually only get facials and the fantasy tan done here, but I have had basically every service they offer and never been upset with the service. First of all, the front desk girls have never bothered me. Maybe I don't even notice them? They answer any questions I have..and always fit me in even if I am running late. I go to Sophie for facials about once a month and she is WONDERFUL. I went out once right after a facial (sans make-up) and my friend asked what I was wearing bc my face was "glowing." My skin is always super soft afterwards too. She usually throws a few extra services my way for a discount too. The fantasy tans- I also go to Sophie. She is really fast, its always even and most importantly, looks natural. I have gotten my nails done there. The polish holds up for a full week w/o chipping and looks really nice. The experience isn't as great as other places, but I'll be honest, I hate getting manicures anyway, so I'd rather the people be quick. I've had better pedicures, but nothing to complain about here. I also have had waxing done here. I am pretty sensitive to wax on my face and they use a different kind of wax- forget the name of it- but it keeps my skin from breaking out afterwards. Make-up- I can't remember the woman's name, but she did a great job! Hair-My hair cut and color were exactly what I asked for....which was exactly what I wanted...so I was happy. A few last notes: -I have gotten all sorts of free samples as a long time customer. -The front desk girls are fine. -I have only been charged ONCE for a missed appointment and I have missed or cancelled in under 24 hrs about 10 times. -One time I was overcharged and was given my next facial free. Salon 1800 to save the day! My hair has been too long for too long! I had to make an appointment stat to cut it off and get a fresh new color. I went on a limb even and said, give me whoever to do both. To my surprise, I was given somebody who I haven't found reviews on - his name is Pedro. I walked in and the gentleman standing behind the counter was nice - not overly excited or nice - but friendly enough. He grabbed Pedro for me and up he walks. He was kind of quiet and I was a little nervous at first. I told him I wanted to be a brighter blonde and to chop my hair from the middle of my back to my shoulders. He did an AMAZING job on both. The blonde color he did - I have received so many compliments on which by the way - I have never had people ask a) if I color my hair b) say that my color looks amazing. He wasn't scissor happy, he did exactly what I wanted and gave me the color I wanted. A nice added bonus - it wasn't through the roof expensive. Sometimes I just get in the "I need to change my hair mood" and going through a consultation first then scheduling an appointment one month later really tests my patience. So I started googling best salons in Chicago, which is how I found salon 1800. I called and I was surprisingly able to book a balayage and a cut the next day with Sarah. (She was the only name I remembered while scrolling through numerous yelp photos). Needless to say it was the best salon experience I've had ever. Usually I walk out of salons cringing at my cut because it's shorter than what I wanted or the color wasn't what they said I'd realistically get (I wasn't disappointed because I expected a color I could never achieve in one visit). However, Sarah knew exactly what I wanted and I trusted her. She was very knowledgeable and answered all my hair questions, naive as they were. The only thing that surprised me was the cost breakdown. I definitely chose this salon because the general balayage cost was cheaper than most, but I didn't expect the balayage and toner to be charged separately. Maybe that's just me.. either way I was still more than happy to only pay $200 for my balayage, considering I paid almost double last time.. I would highly recommend this salon and especially Sarah to anyone reading reviews. She doesn't have many pictures posted here, but don't let that fool you. She's great. read more

My experience as Salon 1800 was awful. I was recommended to see a friend's stylist but when he wasn't available I instead saw Valerie. Based on her experience in the field, I thought she'd be trustworthy and provide insight and a great cut and color. I researched the price points of what I was looking for online. Based on the website $150.00 for full highlight and around $50 for a cut. This fell into my budget and I felt comfortable moving forward with the appointment. Upon arrival, Valerie told me that I made a huge mistake by allowing my Last colorist to put a bump on my roots, she criticized my decision and the color of my hair. (Obviously I was there to remedy the bump, color and shape, and didn't need to be scrutinized by a stylist). She then made a recommendation to balayage instead of highlight. I told her this was out of my price point and instead wanted to stick with my original request. To which she responded that a full highlight and cut was impossible for $200.00 and that she'd have to remedy the two tones that were at the root of my hair (my roots and the bump). Again, obviously I'm looking to remedy my color, that's why I went to see a stylist . After some extensive back and forth about the upswell that she tried to persuade me to purchase and what I wanted, I finally said, "provide me with a solution that accommodates my request." Valerie was immediately offended. Valerie gave me a full highlight and cut which both turned out nicely. It is worth noting that she literally did not say one word to me during the entire 3 hour process. She did not initiate casual conversation, she did not ask if I needed water, to use the ladies room, nothing. She actually said to me, after I turned down the balayage and explained I was on a $200.00 budget, "What are you doing here?" She had the worst customer service of any stylist I've ever visited. I was mortified by her behavior! Salon 1800 is in a very affluent neighborhood and it's an accurate assumption based on my experience that Valerie (and maybe all stylists there?) are accustomed to upselling the customer without reservation from the customer. I would not recommend Salon 1800 if you are on a budget or looking for a friendly experience at the salon. I left with nice hair feeling defeated. I worked hard to set aside that $200.00 for my hair, my business was not appreciated or honored in the least. I will note that after my appointment, I immediately spoke with the salon manger Clara who apologized for the unprofessionalism exhibited by Valerie and invited me back to see another stylist in the future. Don't let the word "apprentice" scare you...Dennis is actually an experienced stylist who works at Salon 1800 and is just looking to add new clients at a discounted rate, beyond his normal hours there. I love high end salons, but just can't justify paying up to $180 for a partial highlight anymore, so this was perfect. Dennis is so nice, laid back, and FAST. I got highlights and a blow dry and was out the door in 90 minutes. He did such a great job too, exactly what I wanted. Partial highlight and a blow dry = $50 + tip Doesn't get any better! I saw Lisa for a cut and single process color-- in short: Amazing results. Pros: Lisa is friendly, thorough and generally crazy skilled. She got my color spot on, eyebrows matching beautifully and the best haircut I've had. She was able to see where my last cut went wrong, took some weight off and shaped it beautifully. I'm super happy :) Lisa makes sure to talk out what you want to ensure that you get a great cut and style. Super fast-- I usually plan on at least 3 hours for a cut and color but I was done in less than 2. Cons: It is the most I've spent on my hair. $170 for cut and single process color. The wash was a bit 'rough'. I'm used to the wash and condition part of the salon experience to be gentle and relaxing and that's not the case here. Maybe because they are super busy? idk-- but I kind of felt like my head was being thrown around. That was the only downside to my experience. 4 stars for the price and rough wash. All that to say-- I made my next appointment and will gladly pay $170 for Lisa's care with my cut and color. read more

Eye Brow Wax - Inna is amazing! She took a good look at my eyebrows, and the shape of my face. We are currently in the process of shaping and growing out my eyebrows. She is very knowledgeable, and spends as much time as necessary. She also gave me tips on how to care for them between appointments. Haircut - Kate is great!
