Mothers Day lunch was a hit at Sal's! Up from San Diego and have been looking forward to trying this place. They did not disappoint! We had the gumbo, jambalaya, red beans & rice, fried okra, chicken wings, Mac & cheese, seasoned fries, banana pudding and peach cobbler - we came to eat!!! Every thing was delicious. I came here last Tuesday and finally got try a couple of items . Always call ahead before coming here because they aren't open sometimes when they say they are open . For example I called and found out they were going to be closing for an hour that Tuesday between 4pm and 5pm as they needed to get more supplies. Also call ahead to make sure they are still frying things . I would have tried this place months ago but was dismayed and ultimately crestfallen due to the fact that I found out I wouldn't be able to order a poboy because they stop frying things about an hour before they close so ..mind you I was already en route from west LA. It sucked . Anyway I digress ! I finally got to try a poboy this last Tuesday . After a considerable amount of time passed I finally decided to order a Rex poboy which is a poboy consisting of both fried catfish and fried shrimp , lettuce tomato , mayo and their very own remoulade . The catfish was a bit fishy and the shrimp was pretty bad quality .You get about 2 pieces of catfish and 3 fried shrimp in the sandwich .Overall it's pretty small sandwich . The remoulade was saccharine sweet!!! Luckily I got it on the side . The sandwich is pretty edible with just a light touch of mayo and Louisiana hot sauce .2.9 stars for the sandwich . The gumbo is pretty watery and tastes like chicken soup . Not bad but definitely not my kind of gumbo . 3stars . The fries are out of this world fantastic !!! Natural Hand cut rustic and well seasoned ...my favorite . My grandma kept stealing extra helpings after I offered her one . Lol 5 stars !!! Overall 3.3 stars . Ok so let me start off by saying I use to go to the Long Beach blvd spot back in the day until my wonderful gf discovered boo boo In the shrimp, which grossed her out I personally thought it added extra flavor moving on to 2022 now open one in bixby. I found this place a while back on Yelp while searching for restaurants of the like and bookmarked it. The reviews were good enough for me to decide to check it out. My New Years resolution this year is to try at least one new restaurant a week (and to write a Yelp review if possible). So come January 1st I was anxious to start this not so hard to accomplish resolution. I was originally set to go eat at Raising Canes (even though I've already been there plenty of times) but as fate would have it, it was closed for the New Years much like many other businesses. I browsed my Yelp and my eyes fell on Sal's Gumbo Shack... I made a quick call to make sure they were open, grabbed my keys, grabbed my mom, and drove off. Parking could of been bad (its located at the corner of a residential street) if I hadn't been lucky enough to find one space open near the entrance. I ordered a Shrimp Po'boy with fries and my mother the Fried Chicken Dinner with two sides of mac n cheese and red beans and rice. Pricing is bit on the high side for such a casual restaurant but I was willing to give it a try. We ended up ordering the food to go because the restaurant was a bit drafty. The wait was a good 15-20 minutes even though she informed us it would take about 25-30. I was a little shocked by the wait but hey, good things take time right? Apparently you could order over the phone or online, something I will do next time for sure. I loved my food and was definitely satisfied. My mother on the other hand thought the red beans and rice were too salty (I didn't think so, so I ended up eating it :D ). I did try her fried chicken and thought it was a bit too bland but thats what hot sauce is for. My mother wasn't a fan but I sure was. It's definitely an intimate no frills joint, but their authentic Creole cuisine made me feel like I was a part of their family. After reading Dan H's review about this place in February I really wanted to go but I knew the odds of me ever getting here was slim to none. Fast forward to yesterday my wife and I came to eat thanks to an invite from Dan H to attend his PYE. This tiny hole-in-the-wall is right off the 710 freeway with a few parking spots in the front. If no spots are available there's plenty of parking in the adjacent neighborhood. The restaurant is small but has a small dining room and a pretty large patio area which is where our group was. Since the name of this restaurant includes the word "gumbo" in it I had to try the gumbo. I ordered a small which is $7.99 @ 16 ounces. If I wasn't a married man I would have kissed Sally (A.K.A. Sal) on the lips because this was the best frickin' gumbo I've ever had. This was 16 ounces of magical elixir guaranteed to make you feel good. The broth was rich in crustacean flavor and had a spicy kick to it. It was fully loaded with shredded chicken, flavor packed sausage, tender shrimp, crab legs, and white rice. He taught me about love and responsibility, about beauty, and how to make gumbo -- Walter Mosley Visited Sal's with my son and a Long Beach friend at the invitation of Dan H. for his PYE, the afternoon after my own OC Wine Mart event. Dan had been raving about this joint, and even though Dan may be a questionable character, his taste is anything but ;) A background on gumbo: Gumbo is probably the most famous of all the dishes that compromise Louisiana cooking. From What's Cooking America: "One of the oldest dishes in Louisiana and a source of culinary pride as far back as there are written records, in modern times it has become as much of a cultural symbol of Louisiana as jazz or the bayou. Even more so than jambalaya or red beans and rice, it is ubiquitous in restaurants, at special events, and in homes of all classes throughout Louisiana. Generally speaking, a gumbo is a thick, dark soup containing a mixture of rice, vegetables, and meat or seafood. Yet when it comes to ingredients, the one constant in gumbo is variety." The gumbo here is definitely thick and delicious with a variety of ingredients including chicken, turkey ham, several sausages, shrimp and crab legs. It is an excellent version filled with, yep here is the cliche, soul. I also had a fried chicken plate with cornbread, red beans & rice and mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was just okay but everything else was as excellent as the gumbo. I also had a taste of the tri-tip fries (essentially a tri-tip chucky stew poured over the outstanding seasoned fries) and they were very good too. The meal was completed with two homemade desserts of peach cobbler and banana bread pudding and while I enjoyed both the banana bread pudding was at another level and one of the best versions I have tasted. They occasionally have jazz nights here in the open patio but otherwise Sal's is the epitome of a hole in the wall with a small amounts of seats. Service was friendly and efficient too, especially with a gaggle of Yelpers, and we even got to meet Sal herself. They gave us free corkage and a hearty Syrah went with the robust gumbo perfectly. My son enjoyed his plate of chicken, red beans & rice and mac n cheese but he really did love the fries :) I cannot teach him how to make gumbo but I can teach him how to be a man and how to appreciate different foods. So, I FINALLY made it to Sal's Gumbo Shack on a Sunday. The restaurant is truly a "Shack" with a few inside seating tables, and an outside patio next to a church. We arrived before the lunch crowd and was welcomed with friendly smiles ..... very nice! We ordered: (1) Fried Pickles Perfectly seasoned fried pickles served with a french/mayo dipping sauce. Delish! (2) Sal's Louisiana Style Seafood Gumbo - Medium A hearty and succulent delightful Gumbo with chicken, several sausages, shrimp and crab leg over rice. This was the BEST gumbo I've ever had. It had depth in seasoning and was an absolute delight. Delish! (3) Shrimp Po ' Boy Sandwich w/ Fries I had to try their famous Shrimp Bo' Boy sandwich which did not disappoint. There were plenty of lightly battered shrimp in a soft roll with a mayo based sauce, lettuce, & tomatoes. Those shrimps were a delight and the whole sandwich was wonderful! (4) Three Piece Fried Chicken w/ Red Beans, Mac & Cheese & Corn Bread Hubby devoured his hot meal. The wings served with his meal were HUGE and the breast and drumstick were also great! Dave and his group were playing some cool jazz at this spot and the hubby and I were invited to this PYE with special arrangements made for food. Hot, hot, hot, the weather and the music! We were all seated on the outside patio, luckily late Sunday afternoon turned out to be a bit cooler, we were in shade and service was friendly and tried hard to please the group and get the drinks out. Unfortunately, the food didn't hold up to scrutiny in my opinion. The standouts were the Boo Fries which Dave arranged as a substitute for me in place of gumbo, the specialty, as I don't do fish. Could have used more meat and more cheese, but overall very good. Now I know I'm sounding picky here (and I am super picky), but I only do white meat chicken, yep I'm a breast girl. The fried chicken was the other standout, delicious coating and I could have ran around eating other people's delectable fried skin off their chicken if they'd let me! Alas, it was a wing, a thigh, and a leg, no breasts to be found. Sides: Corn bread, horrible, nothing good to say, no butter was brought out (I asked) and not sure it would have helped anyway. Mac-n-cheese, tiny portion, cold, not cheesy, not creamy, just lacking in many ways. Red beans & rice, decent but a bit thin and I detected zero Andouille sausage. Dessert: Peach cobbler, one of my absolute faves in the dessert arena. This was lacking greatly. Clearly canned peaches were used, it was all too wet, too sweet and because it was so wet, my cobbler portion was soaked and somewhat mush. I had one bite of hubby's caramel cake and it was horrificly sweet. No booze, beer, etc., but the proprietor was awesome to let everybody bring in their own libations in coolers. I hopped on down the street and bought back Bartles & James Pina Colada, a real blast from the past for me. I have to admit that I was skeptical when Mr D told me that he wanted to go to this event....and not because Dan was throwing it (jk) but because I am not much of a Gumbo - shrimp eater. After saying that, not only did I enjoy myself and the great food there....I now have to EAT my words. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese and yams (no calorie counting at this one!) and I have to say that the cornmeal batter was seasoned perfectly with just enough spices and pepper. The hubby and I are now fighting over who gets my leftovers! The mac and cheese was delicious and the yams.....OMGosh! I just wanted to drink the leftover nutmeg, cinnamon and spice syrup that the yams were floating in.....just like CANDY! I have to say that the reason I even brought left overs home is because I heard someone say that they had BOO FRIES..........what the heck are boo fries!!!!! I had to have me some so I ordered a side of those. Well, let me just inform you that Boo Fries are seasoned fries with shredded cheese....and there's more.....it is topped with roast beef gravy, but what they fail to mention is that it isn't gravy but the most juicy - tender - melt - in - your-freakin - mouth roast beef tip that is insanely delicious. I was so wrapped up in eating that and passing it around for everyone to try that I was to full to eat anymore chicken so I had them wrap it up to go. When I CRAAAVVVEEE a good shrimp po'boy and hearty gumbo, I run straight for Sal's open doors! My southern roots call out to it like the wolf does to the moon! Heck, I even fell in love with oysters because of her delicious oyster po'boy! Sal knows how to take a girl home, and my tummy can't get enough! I used to make it a weekly(okay..some times twice..don't judge me!) thing, but now that I don't work as close by, I get here maybe twice or three times a month! Not nearly as often as I'd like haha. Sal's is a cute, homey little joint, decorated up a little like good ol' NOLA! So it makes me feel close to home, and the heat from the kitchen, ooh wee, that's a southern day in the summer..no big thing, but a chicken wing! My makeup is MELT proof (^_~). Most of the time I'm greeted by Sal herself, a warm and cheerful woman who runs this place with ease! I love the little chit chat as I wait for my food when the place isn't busy as a bee, but even when it is, and she's there, she still attempts to make her rounds (especially on Sunday y'all..after church let's out..oohh weee) don't close that front door though, she'll holler at you. There's not outside seating, and no private lot so if you might have to park down the block some and walk it in LOL! Yesterday, the craving for shrimp poboys hit so hard. So I got up, and drove to Sal's..doing that 30 minutes before closing was all bad LOL no shrimpies..there were oysters..but that's not what I wanted. Told her I'd come back in the morning. So, now it's Sunday morning and I rolled into Sal's at about 12:45pm, wasn't crowded yet! Woohoo! Placed my order and took a seat. It takes about 15-20 minutes for your food to be made, so you know it's fresh! Something I love about this place (^_^) Today it was just me and an elderly gentleman, who was enjoying his lunch. We started talking and I ended up sitting there for almost 30 minutes after Sal brought me my food! I absolutely LOVE that you can pop in here and just have a nice little chat with the patrons, especially the elderly ones. I said good bye to Carl as he finished up as he finished up and left just as it was starting to get busy. And when I finally got home and dug into my gumbo, oh boy. So rich, and flavorful. The broth isn't so much of a roux and not completely a broth, but it's not watery or soupy at all. It's just right! I had 4 or 5 large chunks of crab legs and 4 huge pieces of shrimp in my 16oz container, and sooo much meat. It was chock full of hearty Louisiana goodness. My tummy was so happy..and my poboy? Delicious as always! 10 cruncky, crispy shrimps tucked into a bed of lettuce inside a bun topped with amazing, creamy sauce and paired with a hefty helping of Cajun fries!! The Cajuns fries have a good kick to them, especially when they're still piping hot! Always fresh and never soggy, the fries are cooked to perfection! Don't leave them in your to go box for too long because then they'll get kinda soggy..but they're still BOMB!! My buddy, Dan H. Invited me and my wife to lunch at Sal's....along with 18 more friends. A roomy side patio was waiting for us on this gorgeous Sunday. Sunday is the day they cook up their most amazing dishes, so my wife and I split two huge dishes. One was fried chicken with mac n cheese and candied yams. The other was ox tail with greens and red beans 'n rice. They lost our order and it took a while to get our entrees. The owner, Sal, short for Sally, was kind enough to serve us two big bowls of gumbo to munch on while we waited. That's a $16 apology. You are forgiven. That gumbo was just as amazing as my first visit a few months ago. Lots of shrimp, crab, rice, shredded chicken and sausage in a really spicy broth. Fantabulous. The entrees came and my wife and I split everything. The fried chicken was the best ever. Thick, spicy skin, large meaty fresh chicken, cooked to perfection. Tasty as all get out. We never had ox tail before so were very curious. It came with two huge chunks of vertebrae, covered in a fatty meat. It was so tasty we both grabbed a big bone and started sucking the meat out of the little crevices. The candied yams were huge chunks of fresh sweet potato in a buttery brown sugar sauce. Great for dipping the cornbread. The greens were fresh and had little chunks of meat in the broth. The mac n cheese was delicious, too. The cup of red beans and rice was very flavorful and could have been a meal all by itself. The Gumbo Shack is Good! THE GUMBO SHACK IS GOOD! Look I stopped by NOLA on my move out to LA and I had Gumbo. NOW it WAS at a Diner! And it was 2 AM. SO NO IVE never tried NOLA's 'elite' Gumbo spots. ( I also used to look up a million Gumbo recipes from Food Network and make them!) BUT if you compare the Gumbo I had in NOLA. (Remember its only a "Diner" Gumbo unfortunately I could only spend one night in NOLA. THIS GUMBO was BETTER! WAY BETTER! LEAPS and BOUNDS better! I went on my Yelp mobile app yesterday morning, looking for a good restaurant for my husband and I to visit for lunch. Sal's Gumbo Shack showed up and I read all of the reviews. Everyone had great things to say about the food, especially the shrimp po'boys, so I pulled up the website and looked at their menu. There were so many delicious things on the menu to try that we just had to go! My husband and I set out around 10:30, so that we could get there when they opened. We sat through MAJOR (construction) traffic to get there, but refused to turn around. We were on a mission for some good, down home southern cooking! By the time we arrived, it was almost noon. We parked on the street and proceeded to walk in the front door. We noticed that they were closed and that there was a note on the door that they were going to open at 1:00pm. As we were walking back to the car, a man cleaning up the outside patio area called to someone inside, who we later found out was Sal. Sal is short for Sally. She came out with a big smile and apologized for the inconvenience, but said that they had had a small electrical fire early that morning and that they were getting a late start. We told her no problem, that we would just wait in the car; hell, we'd traveled a distance to get there, sat through traffic and dealt with a$$hole drivers...we were gonna wait! Sal then thanked us profusely and remarkably went to get a pen to take our order, so that we wouldn't have to wait any longer than we had to!! Talk about service!! We gave her our order and she said she'd come get us, as soon as they opened up. We waited in the car and chitchatted and she came out to get us about 15 minutes to 1:00pm. We had planned on taking everything to go, but Sal, sweet as she is said she was hoping we would stay and eat, because she likes to see the enjoyment of the food on her diners faces. So, we told her no problem, we will stay and eat a little and wrap the rest up. Now, from everyone's reviews, we had to basically try it all. We ordered two Remy style shrimp po'boy sandwiches, fried chicken, greens, red beans and rice, candied yams, and some gumbo. No, we're not pigs, lol! We had just planned on eating it over the next few days. Well, let me tell you...the po'boys were DUHHHLLIICCHHUUSSS (Delicious:-)!!!!!! We enjoyed every bite of that, which we ate later for dinner. Make sure to get extra remoulade for that sandwich! While we were there, we noshed on the fried chicken (SO FREAKIN TASTY, IT WAS RIDICULOUS!!), some red beans and rice (I used to think Popeye's had the best cajun-style red beans...um....nope! Not anymore!). We ate the greens....OMG!!!...the greens...the greens...the greens...were a culinary deeeelight! My husband, who hates greens nearly fell outta the booth when he tried those!! He hasn't had greens even close to those, since his mama made them! And the candied yams...tasted like pie filling! You could smell the cinnamon and that was a dessert in itself! Most of all, we enjoyed the first class service from Sal and her beautiful daughter. Sal was so friendly, it felt like she was family. She treated us not like customers, but like we were family and that really made an impression on us. My husband and I have not eaten like this in a long time, so we truly enjoyed every single moment in this establishment. They have enough room for about 18 people inside and plenty of outside patio room, so I think they can accomodate groups, but it depends on the size. I was so excited to check this place out. The review seemed to be high. I couldn't wait until i try it. i even not eat any breakfast to feast on this scrumptious meal. started with gumbo i was excited after seeing the pictures previously posted by others who had been here. i was like : " crab legs, yumm" well ours didn't come with any crab legs. the 16 oz was half filled. filled with a lot of hal cooked rice, 2 shrimps, kielbasa, chicken bone. i ordered fried okra.. some were super salty some was tasteless. I was like all right... maybe the main course will be better. Then the main course fried chicken was luke warm borderline cold, the greens was ok, the mac n cheese were cold. i wish i had microwave or fryer near by to heat up the hole plate. :( corn bread was dry. the dessert suppose to be red velvet.. but yellow cake came out with caramel sauce on top. i am beyond speechless at this point. :( :( read more

It's not likely I'll be back. I came for the gumbo and was pretty disappointed. It was thin and watery with no very little seafood. My sister, on the other hand, enjoyed both her po'boy and her her fried okra. The peach cobbler was delicious too. However, for a place with gumbo in the name, it doesn't measure up. read more

Sal's is a small family owned stand. You order at the counter and pay. When your food is ready they bring it out to you. Most of their business seems to be take-out, but they have several tables for dining-in. The offer several sizes gumbo, jambalaya, po'boys and other southern specialties. The prices see a bit high at $8.99 for a small gumbo, $11.99 for a medium and $15.99 for a large. The gumbo was very tasty and contained crab and shrimp. It was done in a thin soupy style and not the thick stew style with a heavy roux. There is no parking lot, so you'll have to try for street parking. My husband is always on the lookout for nice and great restaurants. I love it because it's always a mystery for me . I had fried chicken with two sides greens and Mac-n-Chez. He had shrimp po'boy sandwich topped with a special sauce called roumalade. He really enjoyed every bit. Had to top it off with strawberry lemonade! The service was outstanding and the lady who took our order wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. I definitely recommend this place to have some good Cajun food. read more

Sal's Gumbo Shack is a small hole in the wall located in North Long Beach. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but once you go inside, you will have one of the best Creole food experiences ever. The lady working the counter, who I think was the owner, was very friendly and offered up some recommendations. We ended up going with a Po'Boy Sandwich and the Oxtail dinner. Oxtail is not something you find much these days, and Sal's does it pretty good. The Po'Boy Sandwich was awesome and blows Bubba Gump away with size and flavor. The order also comes with a generous amount of fries. I hear the Gumbo is good too, will definitely have to come back and give that a try. read more

To be completely honest, when I pulled up outside Sal's Gumbo Shank, I was a little scared to get out of the car. As soon as that gumbo hit my lips, oh my flavor explosion! Great service, good food, and reasonable prices. I got the small bowl of gumbo (super generous portion, lots of meat [crab legs & sausage], not very thick broth, & rice on the bottom. I prefer a thicker consistency, but the flavors were good. My coworkers broth ordered the catfish croquette plate which includes your choice of 2 sides. I tried a piece of their fish (great crispy fried texture & lots of flavor [better than the gumbo]), cornbread (yum), & fried okra as an appetizer. Came here awhile ago with a friend. She got gumbo and I got oxtails and lemonade. The oxtails were good 7/10 but could have more flavor. I'm picky when it comes to creole and Caribbean food especially coming from that background but this place is better than other places in LA. However the blueberry lemonade wasn't great. It was added blue syrup which was gross. Would've preferred real homemade blueberry lemonade with real blueberries used. Would comeback to try other things on the menu read more
