Drove by this location and I saw the door had a closed sign and almost went to one of the other locations for lunch. I decided to park and check them out. I was greeted lovely lady that made me feel right at home. I put my order order in lemonade(fantastic by the way) jambalaya and then the shrimp amd grits. The lemonade was sweet and addicting. The jambalaya was flavorful and the rice wasn't mushy. And my favorite those shrimp amd grits. I dont know if the cook was feeling special on that day if that's how they normally make it but I was blown away. I have to try try it again to make sure they got that recipie on lock. It was creamy cheesy, flavorful, spiced to perfection. Honestly one of the best representations of this dish I've I've ever had ( top 3 for sure ). Nice amount of shrimp and omg when you eat a large bowl of grits you stay full for a long time. The interior didn't really look like alot of people actually sat in the business to eat, but I did notice alot of Togo orders constantly at this location. I cant wait to come back!

Ordered Deluxe Gumbo today that's supposed to come with extra crab,extra shrimp, extra sausage ..and didn't come with extra anything..I used to get mad at places like this but I just learned to bad mouth the business any chance I get and never spend not $1 with them again..beware if you plan on going there

The food was delicious. However, my turkey burger and catfish was a bit saltier than expected. I rarely eat salty foods. The greens were perfectly cooked, and my cornbread was good and complimentary of the fish but there was not enough greens to balance my meal and the cornbread was a little too sweet for me. . I prefer my cornbread without it being sweet. I was disappointed in the very small portion of greens because they were the Best but not enough to balance my catfish dinner plate.

Fried and seasoned to perfection. It brought back memories of Georgia cooking. Sweet tea was southern sweet so be ready. Love they have 3 flavors of Kool-Aid on tap.

So delicious! The inside is small but the food is amazing! You may not know what you're going to get when you walk in but you won't regret it. They are on the corner and easy to find. Street parking by a residential area. I ordered the catfish poboy and my goodness was it the best I ever had. The bread was soft and it was very easy to bite into. Each bite was deliciousness. I didn't even need any hot sauce or lemon and I put that stuff on everything. The gumbo you can order small, medium or large. I loved how much crab that came with it and the shrimp was deliciousness. I enjoyed the flavor. The seasoned fries were immaculate. They are homemade cut fries. I would come back! We ordered Cajun wings. To me the sauce tasted like sweet chili. Not my fav sauce but the wings were cooked well

The food and the service was beyond satisfactory. this is a place that I'm personally gonna make my own whenever I'm in Long Beach.this is my go to spot . You have to go with the gumbo. And then the Oxtail are beyond delicious

I found this place on TikTok and I really wanted to try it and I have to say I was very disappointed! I don't know how they can call what they gave me Gumbo! It literally had 1 snow crab legs, 5 shrimp and cut up sausage , NO CHICKEN, and it was in more of a broth, NOT ROUX nothing else!! for 22.99! HORRIBLE! Anyway, we did try the turkey chops- good, shrimp and grits-good, Mac and cheese was not seasoned, not even salt! Greens-ok could have used more flavoring and meat in greens! Yams -good . Cornbread was hard and tastes a few days old. We also tried the peach cobbler, it was waaayy too sweet! Like eating a bowl of syrup! and that's about it. Overall, I would rate it a 6/10 The service was ok. I probably would not go back there again

Everyone has their own tastes and opinions, these are ours. I will say though, support this business, give honest reviews so adjustments can be made if they chose to do so, and tell a friend to check it out. I would come back and try something different, but this particular meal, wasn't it. Hopefully it'll be better next time. Maybe it's because we came within 90 mins of closing. Or perhaps the bixby location is a bit better. We'll find out! Pros: - Service is SUPER friendly & prompt - It's a small minority owned business and we enjoyed giving it a try to support - there are 2 locations! One in north Long Beach and one in bixby knolls. This review is for the north Lb spot. - it's on the corner so there's plenty of parking out front on Lb blvd or along the side street. - Cornbread is delicious, a little hard, but very good. Pairs well with the greens! - Greens are tasty! I was looking for smoked turkey based on some photos I saw but it was good without. - Mac n cheese does all that it's supposed to do! It is VERY tasty with great texture. - Red beans and rice are good, a bit on the salty side, but good. - The Catfish batter is very tasty - Fries are yummy - Turkey leg is ok - portion sizes are nice for the price. You can make 2 meals off one dinner if you're a lighter eater. - they have a vast menu from burgers to Poboys, gumbo and jambalaya and entree dinners like catfish, fried chicken, and fried turkey chops. They also have desserts and a variety of punch/juice up front. I shoulda got me one while we waited for our food. Next time. Cons: - you can't smell any food in there, not when we walked in, not while our order was being prepared, not even when we got the food in the car. I didn't hear any fish fryin. We had to sniff the bag to get a whiff of the food in the car. That's always a flag for me. I want to smell and hear the food when I walk in, let me know that some cooking is going on and not just reheating. But that's me. - We paid $78 for: gumbo with rice on the side ($2 extra for on the side rice instead of leaving it inside the gumbo - same rice right? Guess I'm paying for the extra container), a peach cobbler, a turkey dinner and a catfish dinner. I teased about the price, but I honestly don't mind paying for good tasting and good quality food. Unfortunately, the price did not match the taste of the food, at all. Like, at all! - medium Gumbo $23 + $2: super fatty and greasy (see photo). We can see the grease congealing at the top when we opened it. Although it was warm, the grease was already forming a skin on top. With grease like that, it covers your palate and stops you from tasting anything. Also, doesn't seem to be made traditional style from a roux, it's more brothy and thin, even when adding in the rice. And the broth isn't very flavorful or maybe the grease just interfered with the taste. It's full of meat, which is great (shrimp, small sausage pieces, pieces of crab leg and I think chicken or turkey), but the flavor is just one note. I think it's due to the grease. It doesn't taste like gumbo, it's more of a soup. We only could stomach a couple small spoon fulls each. - peach cobbler $4.99 on menu, $5 on the receipt: looks amazing, but it taste like sweet grease. The peaches are cut super small, the dough looks like it has amazing texture but it's hard to taste anything beyond grease and sugar. Can't taste cinnamon, nutmeg, peaches, or any traditional peach cobbler flavors. It also left a film of oil in my mouth, similar to the gumbo, after just a few small spoons. Peach cobbler is my favorite dessert but after a couple bites we couldn't do it. -catfish dinner $20: (see photos). It is full of the silver skin, which is really slimy and doesn't taste well ever, and it takes away from the flavor and consistency of the fish so it's traditionally removed or at least the pieces covered in silver skin aren't cooked, or at least they're fried harder to crisp it up a bit. This catfish had it on every single piece. It was super rubbery and unappetizing. Although the batter was pretty flavorful, most of the fish was left on the plate because of all the silver skin. - that's $50 worth of inedible food. Not bashing. We were asked to give a review, good or bad. So I want to be honest because I really wanted to like it. Sometimes it takes reviews to make improvements. My tastes are my tastes but the amount of grease in the gumbo and cobbler and all that silver skin is a universal no no. Hopefully when we come back it'll be better. Rooting for improvements!!!

First time here. Was greeted with a very friendly smile. This place is colorful, warm, and cozy. The Gumbo has a nice spice and is terrific. The fried chicken is outstanding. I'm definitely coming back. Try it with the mac n cheese! read more

I got to start off by saying I have never been treated so warm like if I was family or if they knew me for years. . That alone make me want to come by for dinner every day. ... Now let's get to the food. .. I got the large gumbo that's what I was in the mood for it came out and I thought Ok. . It was piping hit so I let it cool .. and i noticed that it thickened. ... WOW it was so good ... my hunger got the best of me. .I ended up picking up Cup and slowly chugging it! One of the set lady's bought me or a piece of corn bread to do in the rest and WOW ... I have never had corn bread that was so moist ... Who knew cornbread and gumbo was such a good pair .... I'll Definitely be back for this pairing the wrong combo was worth the 15 minute wait. .. next on the list ...turkey chops and Sunday for oxtail ...... Thanks lady's read more

Thank you Lawd Jesus!!! Winner winner gumbo dinner!! Ok so this place is the new cajun/creole spot! (not that I had one ..but still) I just came from visiting New Orleans and was missing the food badly so I yelped for gumbo spots near me. Sal's popped up and had great reviews so I said why not and damn glad I did. I would be eating there everyday if I wasn't trying to lose weight. Had the shrimp remoulade poboy and spicy shrimp and it is definitely something worth trying! Start with a poboy...you won't be disappointed. read more

Sal's was SO GOOD! I will admit, I was a little bit skeptical at first. I was craving gumbo and foudn this place on yelp and decided to give it a go. My family is from New Orleans, so I've had some pretty legit gumbo before, but I have to say, I was impressed. I went with my family and we got fried okra as an appetizer, which was delicious! I've never had it before, and man was it good. My mom and I split a Remy Style Shrimp Po-Boy and some gumbo and both were so good! Whatever kind of mayo/sauce they put on that Po-Boy (the same that they give you with the fried okra) was great! The food was delicious, the staff was so friendly, and the music was great! Whenever I'm down visiting in SoCal, I'll definitely be back. Oh and we went on a Saturday around 12:30pm and it wasn't too crowded. Just as a heads up, there is very little parking right in front of Sal's. We parked up the street and around the corner. read more

Best jumbalaya i have had! Its not salty and its all about the spices. I also ordered the PO' Boy shrimp sandwich with extra lettuce, which was also very very yummy. I always order to go so i am not 100% sure how service will be if you dining in, but if its anything how they treat their customers on there to go orders then it should be great! read more

I was so happy to find a new gumbo spot to try. I ordered the medium seafood gumbo and jambalaya for my co worker. It does take while to get your food. It took about 30 mins to get my food. Inside my gumbo there was sausage, chicken and crab. I didn't think there was enough flavor in the gumbo. I will got back one more time to try another item. My co worker did enjoy his jambalaya. Make sure to call in your order so you don't have to wait as long. read more

This place has a pretty good shrimp po'boy. I always go for the Remy style which includes more shrimp and fries. I do like that they have great customer service and are very welcoming. However, my last visit I noticed the shrimp were not as plump and juicy as they had been before and that the bread for the po'boy wasn't that fresh. Hopefully it's just a one time thing. read more

Best Gumbo this year. Pieces of bone and crab shell to be expected. Very friendly staff. Medium bowl was pricey at $15, but it is LA. Had no drink selection so had to go with bottled water. Clean but a little tired. My buddy had the Shrimp Po boy and said it was good. As I said best Gumbo in a long time. read more

I love Cajun food and cook it myself. We ordered the Gumbo, Jambalaya and the Cajun BBQ Shrimp. The food was delicious, everything was perfect Cajun seasoning and not too spicy but definitely kick'n! Perfectly cooked Shrimp in the dishes that had them, the Gumbo blew my mind with perfect mixing of flavors and the Jambalaya was great with the perfect texture for the rice. This is only half of the story though... If you are looking for someplace fancy to impress a fancy lady this might not be your first stop. However if you want genuinely nice hosts, great flavorful Cajun food and real down to earth hospitality swing by Sal's. Sally took some time and told me a couple of secrets I dare not post here since we both share a love of Cajun cooking. My 5 year old was there and Sally showered him with sorbet and a sampling of homemade cheesecake pound cake. A rare experience and memorable one, I will be posting a second review soon as I hope to make it for a Soul Food Sunday in the near future! read more

Let me preface by admitting that I am from Mississippi, so perhaps the amount of butter, grease and love I expect for my fried chicken, biscuits, and sweet potato fries are unreasonable -- perhaps even illegal -- in this fine state of California. That being said, Sal's delivered decent, though admittedly a little bland, food. I wasn't transported home or to Butter Heaven, but the fried chicken was definitely made to order and not sitting around for its chance to fly before we got there. In addition to the aforementioned items, I got mac and cheese (very dry) and rice and beans (well-seasoned, probably my favorite part of the meal, but presentation was a bit lacking) as sides. The price was quite high for what it was, though. Great friendly service and a good vibe among the customers. read more

Man I love me some gumbo, and Sal's gumbo did not disappoint at all! I love southern food specially the ones that come from the cajun regions. I must say tho her sweet tea had some type of magic in it cus that was "de" best tea I have ever had. I will be coming back for soulful sundays! The shrimp po boy was amazing... I've been to Sal's 3x. At first, the hype got to me but I eventually came to my senses. My first visit, I had the shrimp po'boy (it was aight), my 2nd visit I had the gumbo (it was pretty good) and my 3rd visit I had the jambalaya (it was just ok). The thing is, I normalize by ratings with the price. And for what you pay for at Sal's, the return isn't that great. With that said, after my 3 visits, Sal's is just so-so in my eyes. read more

The Rex po'boy was so freaking delicious. I like that this spot is a friendly hole in the wall. As someone who strictly abstains from pork, I was pretty excited to find out that the gumbo and jambalaya are porkless. We sampled the gumbo at the end of our meal and let's just say I know what I'll be ordering the next time we're back. Thank you for bringing the bayou to Long Beach! read more

As a non-meat eater I was very happy and surprised to learn that this restaurant serves jack fruit. It reminded me of smothered oxtail with rice from when I used to eat meat. The Mac and cheese, yams and corn bread were really good too. I will definitely go back! read more

Can't even say ive tried the food to make a review about the food in general. Came all the way from the valley to try this place during regular business hours. Get to the door CLOSED! Open sign still on with a piece a paper on door saying "Be back a 5pm" BUT on yelp it says they are OPEN! So for future references and to customers. APPARENTLY Call before you come to make sure someone is home smdh. So i took my appetite to another soul food establishment in Carson. read more

I tried the shrimp and grits today. Cooked perfectly. The shrimp was large and juicy. And the grits were super buttery which is just how I like it. The sauce on top brought it all together. I'm picky about my shrimp and grits but this is Karla approved. The service was great. I met the owner Sal, she's amazing. This is my second time here and I'll be back to many more. read more

I really hate to leave this bad review because I love to support black businesses but I spent 26 dollars with them and my food was not edible. I ordered smothered turkey wings with rice, collard greens, sweet potatoes, and a peach cobbler on the side. The smothered turkey wings tasted freezer burnt, the sweet potatoes had a rubbery texture with a watery sauce and the peach cobbler was not fresh with soggy crust. The only thing I was able to eat were the greens which had a nice flavor to them. I was very disappointed because I'm the past I had a great experience with them. I loved the gumbo and the P.O. boy was delicious. read more

Really different and deep savory flavors here. The chicken wings were battered, flaky and not overly salty or spicy. The oxtails were juicy and tender on a bed of rice. The greens were tangy and pleasantly sour and a complement to the rich southern, cajun, authentic recipes. The mac n' cheese was rich, creamy, chewy and comforting. The oxtails plate came with a light, sweet cornbread and 2 sides. The gumbo evoked smells of the sea, buttery roux and some unreachable, unnameable land and people. Everything came out piping hot, made-to-order. One-of-a-kind experience worth every penny. I'll probably have to travel half way across the country to taste this again but luckily Sal's is local. read more

She comes across as combative, takes no accountability for mistakes, and makes resolving simple issues unnecessarily difficult. My daughter called in our usual order for pickup. When she arrived, she immediately noticed something was wrong because the total was much lower than expected. When she politely brought it to Marisol's attention, instead of acknowledging that there may have been a mistake, Marisol insisted the order had never been placed that way. She then asked my daughter if she wanted to order the missing item while she was already there to pick up her food, which would require waiting another 15 minutes. Since the delay was the result of an incorrect order, my daughter asked if she could at least receive fresh fries while waiting. Marisol told her she would have to pay extra for fresh fries. Marisol also claimed that she had repeated the order back over the phone when it was originally placed. That simply isn't true. She rushed my daughter off the phone, saying she'd see her in 15 minutes, without reviewing the order. We've continued to support A&J's because the food is consistently excellent, but experiences like this make it harder to keep coming back. Great food can only go so far when customers are made to feel dismissed instead of valued. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and provides additional customer service training so loyal customers receive the experience they deserve.

We knew what we wanted - brussel sprouts, cheese curds (squeakers) with marinara and a double pepperoni & mushroom pizza with ranch and hot honey on the side. Brussels were solid. Lots of fresh grated parm on them. Squeakers (cheese curds) were crispy and yummy. The star - the marinara!!! Perfect flavor - sweet and savory at the same time. Delicious! Then the pièce de résistance - the pizza. Delicious crust, crispy pepperoni and real earthy mushrooms. What took this pizza to the next level? Their house made ranch and their hot honey to dip it in! Bomb! How has this place only been open 100 days? Found it on TikTok and it did not disappoint! Extra star for impeccable music selection and beautiful minimalist pizza parlor decor. I've been seeing Sal's Gumbo Shack pop up on my social media feeds for months, so I decided to finally give them a try through Postmates. I ordered the gumbo and oxtail, but after placing my order, I checked the Yelp reviews and was a bit worried--most of them were not very positive. Considering the total cost, including delivery fees and a tip, came to about $90, I was concerned I might be disappointed. When the food arrived, I was pleasantly surprised! The gumbo was delicious. It had a great depth of flavor and wasn't overly salty, which I really appreciated. I would definitely order it again. As for the oxtails, they weren't smothered in gravy like I usually expect. It seemed like their own unique take, but honestly, it wasn't bad at all. They provided a generous portion, which allowed me to enjoy a hearty dinner and save some for lunch the next day. Overall, I'm glad I didn't let the Yelp reviews deter me. My experience with Sal's Gumbo Shack was quite favorable, and I would happily order from them again! read more

Sal and Tiffany were very nice, I love the service! The restaurant definitely has more of a 'homestyle' feel to it all around. Sal's has a pretty good catfish po'boy with fresh, crispy fries (~$9). Maybe I'm just comparing to a more 'modern' version I recently had in Oregon. The decor, and seating is not that of a typical restaurant but it may be because they have been open for ~3 months. On Their (nice flatscreen) TV: Food Network, which I love to watch--even if Andrew Zimmern was puttin back larvae, bull penis, and pig brains while I enjoyed my sandwich. People please don't let the small location fool you!!! I went for the 1st time yesterday and I got a small gumbo and my girlfriend got the shrimp Po Boy and we couldn't stay out of each other's food!!!! Their gumbo was a very thin soupy gumbo and it was the most delicious gumbo I've ever had. And their Po Boy is sooooo delicious definitely a place to become a regular!!! Their hospitality was so natural and genuine. They weren't just putting on the "customer service" smile. You can tell they appreciate every customer!!!! read more

My family is from Louisiana, my mother makes the best Gumbo ever. Sal gets 2nd place because she up against my momma and I'm the judge. For real the only difference is that Sal is a business an mom's makes it for the fam so its stacked with seafood. Sal wouldn't make a profit if she loaded it up, but every spoonful is just heaven, filled with the good stuff and not just broth! Bottom line is GO THERE!!! Let me tell y'all this was my first time stopping by after passing by many times... I was not disappointed at all!!!! Ordered jambalaya and shrimp po' boy. Everything was freshly prepared so it was a bit of a wait but worth every minute and I don't mind waiting at all for fresh delicious food. Only reason I gave it 4 stars were because my shrimp weren't deveined and I'm a bit bothered by stuff like that. Will be back though! read more

Order food from there a few nights ago and the meat tasted spoiled. I order the oxtails and red beans and rice. There was the blk guy who seems to be a crook and just let out of prison. I brought this to his attention and like a prisoner response how are you going to fix it. So here it is my review. Taste your meat right on the spot. read more

I've come here for lunch a few times. The food here is excellent. I especially enjoy the jambalaya. Great ambiance and great service. The prices are also not bad especially with the quality of food that you get. I'll come back here again. read more
