So, I wanted so much to like, Sal's Gumbo Shack but it was a VERY BIG disappointment. I ordered a large and medium sized seafood gumbos. It was only a (wasn't even a whole leg) half of a skinny snow crab leg in both orders. It was two little shrimp in the medium order and three little shrimp in the large order. The rice was gummy and glopped together. The roux was burnt to taste and smell and it looked like pencil erasers were diced up and tossed into the gumbo. I'm assuming and hoping it was sausage meat. With being so disappointed in the smell, presentation, flavor and portion of the meals, I was left with no other choice but to throw this "burned soup" water into the trash. Sal's, I know times are hard and Covid is a factor these days, but this is unacceptable food at an unacceptable price. I definitely won't be returning and I would strongly discourage anyone from wasting their money at this business. Don't do it folks! You'll be very sorry!! read more

I'm starting to think personally that all the restaurants in Long Beach are awesome. There's no hype and I feel that they earn their high ratings. So far I have been to this location three times. I know it's odd that I'm just now posting my review but at the same time it was an interesting experience to go as many times as I did and then decide to post a review. It gave me a chance to deal with the different staff members at this location. Laquette was the first staff member I dealt with. She took my order on my first two visits. On the first one she was slightly rude to my little sister when she asked about crab being in her gumbo. And also when I use the restroom they didn't have any hand soap which I found to be odd seeing the fact that we're going through CoVid. On the second visit my sister and I decided to bring my mom. My mom was trying to explain to Laquette does she didn't want rice in her gumbo. Seeing the fact that my mother was going to pay the same price for the gumbo without the rice I decided to ask Laquette for the rice to be put to the side. it almost felt as though we were going back and forth about such a small ordeal. my mom was a bit annoyed by that and although she wanted some water she refused to ask Laquette for it due to her attitude and decided she would buy it from the corner liquor store. I want to say I'm glad I waited until after my third visit to write a review because that was the visit I enjoyed the most. Laquette wasn't there and my mom's sister and her boyfriend was with me on this visit and we were treated royally. this time we dealt with a lady named Sally and another lady named Dallas whom I'm assuming is the cook. Sally was very respectful when she spoke with us. She made this third visit feel so good I decided to leave a tip unlike the first two visits. I felt okay asking her for water and we sat in the back and enjoyed ourselves into the food was done. What I liked about Dallas is that she observed we had been waiting for a while ( which to me makes sense when it comes to gumbo and if you want it done right) but she hollered out to us that our food was almost ready. I thought that to be very respectful saying that we've been waiting for a while. The food was delicious as it was the last two visits. My mom had noticed though the shrimps and the jambalaya were not properly cleaned. This turned her off to the fact that she said she wouldn't eat there again because everyone should know how to clean the shrimp. Me, honestly, wouldn't have noticed anything. Would I go back? The answer is yes. But of course I will want to deal with Sally. In my opinion this location is a very nice place to eat. I feel their prices are reasonable because their food tastes really good. But if too many newly exposed customers are taken care of by Laquette they might become turned off to be honest. As far as parking, it could be a struggle. It's limited right in front of the location and so you might end up parking on the next block near a fish place and walking back to this location. read more

I finally had the chance to come by here after reading so many of my trusted yf's positive reviews. Sal's is located on Long Beach Blvd, about 1/2 a mile south of the 91 in LBC. In addition to gumbo, Sal's offers jambalya, po'boys, and fried chicken. We shared a small gumbo ($8.99) and a shrimp po'boy ($9.99 - inc fries). First of all, the gumbo was OK. It had a nice dark roux. However, the broth should have been thicker. It was lacking one common ingredient, okra, which is surprising because they offer fried okra. In addition, it was served in a styrofoam container on top of a plate. A better presentation would have been in a shallow bowl w/ a scoop of rice. Nonetheless, there was a lot of Andouille sausage and shrimp: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the shrimp po'boy was dank! It had a ton of shrimp, and the remoulade sauce tied it all together. The only downside was the fries could have been crispier: 5 Stars on the po boy, 3 Stars on the fries. Regarding the ambiance, its a hole in the wall. It is located on a corner and seats about 20: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the service was really good. I believe the cashier (and owner) was super friendly and nice. In addition, the food came out quickly: 4 Stars. Having been to N'Awlins a few times, I would say the food here is better than locally based Ritters. Now that I know where Sal's is, and how convenient it is to the freeway, I will definitely be back soon. read more

I would give it a high 3 star, so I'll round up to 4 stars. It is HOT in here, it was hot outside, too. I was just sweating my way through lunch. We should have moved to the table right across from the open door and under the ceiling fan that was there. Where we chose to sit was stifling hot, for me, who generally runs hot. We kept track of the addresses and turned on the street right next to the restaurant and found street parking. It very a fairly small restaurant, with maybe enough seating for about 20 (?) people. It is decorated with New Orleans type of stickers, beads, knick-knacks, curtains, etc. I must say all the purple made me feel happy! We were greeted by Alicia, she was friendly and very accommodating! We asked if it was a family owned business and she said "yes" and she's a relative in the family. The owner, Chef Sally, "fell in love with the Louisiana Cuisine", and wanted to share her cooking with others, so she opened the shack. Alicia held some small talk with us and kept checking to see how the food was and if we needed anything. Very nicely done, Alicia! You walk up to the counter, place your order, and then have a seat at a table, if you are dining in. Your food will be brought to you, you don't need to get up again except to order more food. We ordered: Watermelon Sweet Tea $2.99 - which was super sweet, but was okay with me, especially while consuming all the salt in the Fried Okra! Watermelon Lemonade $2.99 - the watermelon flavor was very subtle, but the lemonade was refreshing! Fried Okra $4.95 - I'd skip it, it was way too salty for me. If they changed that, I would order it again. The dipping sauce was good. Small Gumbo $8.99 - Order it. The broth was very tasty and delicious! This broth is really a broth, didn't seem thick like it was made with a roux. Nonetheless, the flavor was excellent. I'd say there were about 3 pieces of shrimp in it, and 1 + 1/2 actual crab legs (very small). The gumbo has rice in it and a bunch of tiny pieces of sausage. The website describes it as having chicken, turkey, and ham in it, too. I might have mistaken all those sausage pieces incorrectly! And, mine did in fact have the crab leg! Red Beans & Rice $3.50 - Order it. Basic, but yet good. Cornbread Muffins $1.00 each - Skip it. They were a little dried out plus they were small. I think it would be a nice touch to have one with your gumbo order! Greens $3.50 - Order it. I wasn't sure if they were salty or acidic. Greens were ok. I think if they were cooked with some type of sausage or bacon, it would impart more flavor. They were cooked well, not mushy. TIP - The sides are specified as to the days of the week they're available. I didn't take a picture of it (for reference) because I felt like I was going to be asked not to take pictures of the restaurant. Sorry I can't recall what is offered on which days. Their website says they have a food truck now. Seeing as how food trucks aren't inexpensive, if these prices are the same for the truck, it would be in the same range as for other trucks. I ordered 2 dishes. For the Shrimp and Grits. Nothing to write about. The Grits was saturated with cheese and grease. Shrimps very small and few. Couldn't taste the grits. Ate about 20% of it then threw the rest out. For the Seafood Gumbo. This was a joke. Well not exactly since I paid money for it. Flavor ok. This medium size order came with 3 small shrimps that's all I found I. It and 2 super tiny snow crab the length of a child index finger. One of the crab leg was missing crab meat on the inside. It had crab meat, halfway. The crab meat tasted old not fresh. There was little brown pieces of some type of meat. I don't know what they fed me. I paid for Seafood Gumbo. Both dishes were a bust. However the Gumbo was tasted a bit better than the Grits. Both dishes were not worth the price. I definitely will not go back. And I definitely do not recommend. 1 star for each dish. read more

The other day I was stationed at the Compton Blue Line station for work. I was craving some food, but sick of the fast food that I usually have to eat on my lunch break. Being not too familiar with the overall area, and after another coworker had said "well, just go to Chipotle!" (an idea that I scoffed at, I wanted something new..) I turned to my handy Yelp app to help me find something to eat. Sal's came up in my search and with a score of 4.5 stars (out of 180 previous reviews) my interest peaked. My decision to try Sal's was solidified when my break-relief arrived at the station and showed me that he had Sal's address and phone number saved in his phone; he further recommended the gumbo - which is highlighted in many reviews. After a quick drive my partner and I arrived right after 11 (their opening hours). At first they did not look open, but after circling the block we noticed their front door was now ajar. Happily we parked the car (street parking available out front) and as soon as we entered we were greeted by Sal herself (who was wonderfully kind and happy during our entire visit). I chose the shrimp po'boy and cajun fries (meal with an added Arnold Palmer - which renamed here at Sals but still has the same great taste) and my partner chose the 3 piece chicken and fries. The prices were incredibly fair and we both ate for under $20. We took our meal to go, however as it was cooking (about a 15 minute wait) we were able to relax and enjoy the New Orleans decor. Once we got back to the Blue Line station we were both able to tuck into our food. My partner really enjoyed his chicken and sampled one of the shrimp from my Po' Boy (my sandwhich was loaded with shrimp, and it was just the basic one, Sal's also offers another with extra shrimp). I really enjoyed my sandwich (my first Po' Boy ever). The shrimp were tasty and flavorful, and the dressing and the fresh bread really added to my overall enjoyment. Also the cajun fries were delicious - and they had quite a kick to them! My Arnold Palmer was also super tasty, albeit very sweet (which is fine with me!), it really balanced out the spiciness of the fries. Overall I am very happy with my meal at Sal's. I looked them up online and saw that it really is a one-woman operation. The food was delicious and really had that home cooked feel to it. OMG is the only way I know how to explain how amazingly yummy this place is. A little local "hole in the wall" type eatery that packs a big punch in flavor. Staff is just Sal and another cook/preparer in the back. Very nice and helpful when it came to deciding what to order. Parking is found on the street along the neighborhood FOOD- We ordered the shrimp po boy, medium sized gumbo, 3 piece fried chicken, and a side of Mac and cheese. SHRIMP PO BOY 9.99 was good. Had just the right amount of bread to shrimp to lettuce/tomato ratio. The po boy itself is dry except for the sauce that is drizzled on top unlike other places where it's drenched in sauce that it causes the bread to get soggy and the sandwich to fall apart. This order comes with a side of seasoned fries which are just ok in my opinion. ****My only problem with the po boy is its quite small compared to the many other po boys I've had. Especially for the price. It's about the size of a hot dog bun, I think it might even be a hot dog bun that they use which I wasn't too crazy about. I just wish there was more of it for the price.**** 3 stars* SEAFOOD GUMBO is ridiculously good. 11.99 for the medium size is loaded with chicken, turkey ham, several pieces of sausages, shrimp, and crab legs and a side of rice. The blend of all the ingredients and seasonings just works. It is a bit watery compared to other gumbos I've had. Not too salty and not too bland, just great flavor over all. 4 stars*** FRIED CHICKEN- This was my nephews order and hes normally a really picky eater and he didn't want to share. Lucky for me I snuck a bite and it was really good too. Seasoned, Breaded, and fried to perfection. Just like the bbq shrimp I ordered a while back, the entire top was a layer of grease. I've never had gumbo so greasy. I literally took my spoon and tried scooping out as much as I could. There was an abundance of chicken skin floating around. Yuck! There was more skin and gristle than chicken meat. The tiny cubes of sausage...I scooped every single piece of that fatty meat out. Blah! I took home an order of fried pickles and peach cobbler as well. I like the fried pickles and was happy they weren't as salty. My friend ate most of those. I had Sals on my save list for a long time and was able to recently try them. I have to say that I seriously did not like their Food and neither did anyone else that I bought food for. The gumbo was full of rice and was greasy, watery, and had no real gumbo flavor. They chopped the sausage up into super tiny pieces and the crab was mushy. We ordered 3 of these and all three went into the garbage nearly untouched! I also ordered a shrimp and fish Po Boy. It met the same fate as the gumbo because they saturated the bottom in mayonnaise then topped it with some type of sauce too. The lettuce was wilted and brown and the tomatoe was lost in the mush. I like mayo but the amount that they slathered on my food made it mushy and inedible. Not to mention the fish and shrimp wasn't even warm and was on bread that almost reminded me of a hot dog bun. Although the greater Los Angeles is free flowing of diverse culinary palates, I feel the vibe and food of the Cajun/creole experience has at times been missed. Colorful ideas with poor execution. Great aesthetic but lacking in the flavor dept. Sals gumbo shack is located on Long Beach Blvd off the beaten path away from any other restaurant competition but brings all of Nawlins with it. The gumbo is full of flavor, filet and has that right amount of season and spice especially from the hot links. It was scalding hot like it was still boiling on the stove when they got it and the people working there are all helpful. I got the fries because I was craving them and they were fresh hot with a little chew to them and a perfect stay spicy seasoning to balance my gumbo. Only downside I would say was the crab legs seemed especially thin. Meaning extra work to get the small amount of meat from them. But is definitely visit Sals again. read more

This evening we made a 2 hour trip from bakersfield to eat at Sal's Gumbo shack. Upon arrival at 7:38pm there was a sign on the door out of chicken. When I placed my order with the owner (very sweet lady) I told her how far we traveled to eat at her restaurant she was very thankful. We placed are order for sides ( mac & cheese and greens) and when we received our Togo order there was plenty of extra items inside as a thank you for making the trip to her restaurant- that level of customer service was amazing to me. I will definitely be returning in the near future. If any of you are in the area I urge you to give Sal's gumbo a try. P.s. the sweet tea is AMAZING! read more

What a bummer :-/ You can choose if you want your rice inside or on the side. The more you eat it, you really start feeling that nice and subtle kick it has but for me it was very oily, a little bit too oily if I might add. Shrimp po boy w/ side of fries: the fries were good, they aren't spectacular just good, they were a bit too dark though (see pix) I was a little afraid to taste them. I love soggy fries so that's why they were good. I couldn't really taste much of a seasoning in em but if you like soggy fries like I do, u will like them. They are a tad but greasy but don't worry about it enjoy the moment. The shrimp po boy was decent, the batter was good, well seasoned, shrimps were medium size, bread was soft (would have preferred it a little crispier) and a bit more shrimp. I came by for lunch last Saturday. When I arrived at 11:30 am it was pretty slow inside this hole in the wall type restaurant. You order at the counter and I went with the Remy shrimp po boy with fries for $13.99. The Remy is a po boy that has extra shrimp on the 6" bun and extra fries. I also got some of their home made ice tea. My tea had some black specks on the ice and I thought it was bad but then was told that was normal because of the way their boil the tea. It tasted good. The food arrived about 10 minutes later. The po boy has a remoulade sauce on the shrimp which is different than what I am used to. It was very good however.
