I have tried the salt + smoke on Delmar loop location many years ago, so I was excited to have another try at the hill location. I think the food options are great, though they ran out of the stl rib cut. I instead ordered the bestie combo with two meat ( dry wing and brisket) with side of salad and brisket chili. I thought the wing was fantastic with vinegar ranch sauce. The brisket was a bit dry even with sauce, and chili was ok. The fat fried was amazing, also loved the dipping sauce that came with toasted ravioli. It was a fun place to gather, and food came out pretty quickly. St louis style ribs weren't over done but came clean off the bone. The brisket melts in your mouth and the pork and chicken are loaded with flavor but not over salted. My wife got the chicken grilled cheese with a side of green beans and tomatoes. The sandwich was awesome. Perfect ratio of meat and cheese to consider it a grilled cheese. Pimento cheese was a perfect ingredient. We've never had grean beans and tomatoes salad but it was very good. We shared an app of pimento cheese toasted ravioli. It was cooked perfect and full of cheese. The white alabama sauce for dipping left you wanting to put it on everything. There are 4 different BBQ sauces at the table. I love BBQ sauces. I only cared for the My Sweat Besty and the Mustarolina, but that's just my preference. We did order butter cake for dessert but it was nothing special. It almost seemed out of the freezer section. Picked up a carry out order today. Ordering online was super easy. The email instructions were clear with the carry out process. When I arrived, I called and the girl on the phone was friendly and made sure to ask me what kinds of sauces I needed which was great since I forgot to order them. The carry out order was placed on their table outside shortly after we hung up. When I got home and started to plate the orders, I split each combo so that we could have lunch and dinner since it was a lot of food. I was super disappointed when the side dish of macaroni and cheese was missing. Honestly, I was looking forward to that side item the most. we ordered take out and asked to have the toppings on the side, since it was coleslaw and would be very wet and was listed as such on the receipt, also ordered the rib plate. When we got home, the topping for the sandwich was not in the bag so just had the sandwich. The rib plate was inedible, as they were extremely dry like the had been just sitting under a heat lamp. There was also not much meat on the bones and needed a sharp knife to cut apart, rather than other places which fall off the bone. Plate lists it includes popover, which was not included and most of the items were cold. We call the number on the website and left a message, but has been over 2 weeks and no response. Green Bean and Tomato Salad - 2/5 A bit oily, and the vinegary flavor profile was not for me, but someone else might like it. Roll - 1/5 Haphazardly thrown on the plate on top of everything else. Added nothing to the meal. "Special" Side of Mixed Fruit - 3/5 Nothing wrong with it, but nothing to write home about, tasted like it came from a grocery store. If the meat had been just a little less dry, this might have been a great experience. Unfortunately, it was awfully dry, which was something of a deal killer for me. Salt and smoke was the highlight of my trip to St. Louis. My goal was to find great St. Louis barbecue (I'm a NC girl) and I won. I was very nervous because I ordered the food for delivery. However, the food DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!! The kale salad was lovely, and I ended up pairing the pulled chicken with it. The wings and Mac was enjoyable as well. But that toasted ravioli?! We ordered takeout. Service was fast and online ordering easy and the restaurant looks nice inside but we didn't eat in. The food was just okay. Heavy smoke, but oddly not really all that flavorful. Ironically the restaurant has Salt in the name, but I felt like most of the food needed salt. As far as the low rating, I'm pretty disappointed with the portion given for the brisket. (See picture) A skimpy single mangled slice. There's no way this was 3.5oz as indicated when ordering. The ranch dressing is pretty vinegar heavy. This location was mid at least! I was with another person looking to have a great meal and was saddened by the experience. We were on a trip and decided to stop in St. Louis to check out the town and get some bbq from 3 different places on our way to Columbia, Missouri. Salt & Smoke was one of them. The ordering online and picking up was an easy process. Salt and Smoke was hands down the winner of the bbq places - agreed upon by our group, but most importantly me since I'm the yelper. :) Here is what we got: Cream corn - normally cream corn is an alright side, nothing wow worthy, but this cream corn was amazing. The extra flavor that was in there with the right consistency - not soupy like some places, was spot on. Just so good. Wish I could get some more right now. Mac and cheese - I got a large side of this one based off the reviews. The reviews were not wrong. This is some of the best mac and cheese I have had, great cheesy flavor and great creamy consistency. Ribs, Pork, and Brisket - all smoked to perfection and fantastic flavor Dry rub smoked wings - This is the only downside. These were only a hit with one person in our group, but I did not like these at all, way too dry. The seasoning and flavor was spot on, so it was a disappointment in how dry these were. As stated, this was my favorite spot of the three places we picked up BBQ from and would highly recommend. It's disappointing in writing this review that I probably will never get to have them again unless we just happen to go to Missouri again. We visited Salt + Smoke a few days after our disappointing experience at Pappy's. We were determined to find good barbecue. Luckily for us, this place has pretty good bbq. Admittedly, my boyfriend and I are more skeptical of "upper class" bbq -- we dig hole-in-the-wall type places with lower prices and not too much focus on health or fancy ingredients. Salt + Smoke isn't really one of those places, but it's still worth a try. We both got pulled pork plates with fries. I got mac and cheese as my second side, and he had potato salad. Each plate came with a popover, which is...a type of bread I'd never had before. The internet informs me they're hollow rolls made from egg batter, which sounds like what we got. It didn't have a ton of flavor, but the crispy outside and more gooey inside was interesting. Holy crap, these plates came with so much food. The prices are rather high, but they don't skimp on the portions at all. You could easily split a plate. As for the rest of the food...The verdict on the potato salad was that it was decent. The fries were fried in beef fat. That didn't have any hugely discernible impact; they reminded me of Five Guys fries, but thinner cut and maybe not as crispy. We got ranch to dip them in. It was cool that it was made in-house, but we didn't much care for it. It had an almost vinegary taste. The pork was alright. It was chopped a liiiiittle too finely, but the smoke flavor was pretty good. Can't remember the name of our favorite sauce, but it was the one in the largest jug. Sweeter, more Memphis style. The biggest problem with the pork was that it was greasy - it left a bit of a puddle that made my fries soggy. Overall, though, it was a solid effort. The star of the show was by far the mac and cheese! Legitimately some of the best mac and cheese I've had in my life. Creamy, gooey, cheesy, soft, and decadent. I LOVED it. Now That's Brisket! Being from Kansas City I am a pretty tough grader of BBQ, But I will have to admit that they pass the toughest test for smokers! We ordered carry out last night. Their online ordering was a bit confusing if you wanted something not exactly as presented on their site, but calling the restaurant after the order was placed, they gladly modified our order to include our wishes. That was a welcome thing after dealing with so many others who did not prioritize customer service. Their menu pushes the envelop of standard BBQ restaurants. I mean, if you are in St. Louis you should not be surprised to see "Burnt End Toasted Raviolis!" For the record, they were amazingly good. But one of the truest tests for BBQ is brisket. It is one of the hardest cuts of meat to successfully smoke. Preparation (seasoning, rub, and resting come to mind), finishing, and the final rest before the critical task of slicing, are all on the critical path to the perfect brisket. Do them all right and it is magical experience, do any of those tasks poorly and you have pretty crapy roast beef. I will say that their thick sliced brisket was equal to any of the top BBQ's on the other side of the state. Tender, moist, and flavorful! Bravo to the folks out back! The prepackaged sauces were more than acceptable. Each one we tried was flavor enhancing rather that competing with the meats natural flavor. Sides like fried pickles, Burnt End Toasted Ravioli, and fries all delivered on their promises. Long Story Short, their brisket can hold its own with the best in Kansas City. I've had Salt + Smoke many times, but it was always at the Delmar spot. I decided to grab lunch with a friend at the Hampton location. There was some parking spots behind the building. The atmosphere was relaxed with not too many people dining in around 1pm. My party sat on the second floor by the stairs. I got the brisket plate with fries and mac & cheese. The food came out pretty quickly after ordering. I enjoyed by food, although the brisket was a little too salty for my taste. The BBQ sauce here is amazing with the meat. I will always recommend the White Cheddar Cracker Mac. It's one of my favorite takes on mac & cheese by combining a rich creamy cheese with the crunchy texture from the crackers. The service was great. Our server refilled our drinks without asking and checked up on us. I never felt uncomfortable in terms of cleanliness and safety measures. We are in St. Louis for surgery. We looked up several BBQ establishments reading reviews. We settled on Smoke and Salt. We had to do take out due to post op limitations. I ordered 1/2 rack St. Louis rack with green bean tomato salad and BBQ sweet potato chips. My spouse ordered 3 meat combo with pulled pork, brisket, and wet ribs (with less fat) sides were potato salad and beans. When unloading our order, the popovers for both orders, were burnt to the point they couldn't be eaten. They were hard and tasted like burnt toast. The sides were average tasting at best. My green bean tomato salad literally had 1 grape tomato cut in half. Store bought potato salad is better tasting than Smoke and Salt. The wet ribs with less fat is merely cooked longer to burn off the fat, so the meat uder the sauce, was dry. For a $50 order the food was poor to average at best. We will not return to this restaurant and do not recommend others to consider this review before going to Smoke and Salt. read more

This place has very good barbecue. I especially like their smoked chicken wings. They have a nice crust with a tasty rub. And they are great dipped in the Alabama ranch sauce. The ribs are also standout. Great dry rub and excellent dry or with sauce. I'm not a huge fan of the sides. Their creamed corn and brisket chili are very good. Unfortunately, the baked beans and potato salad - usually my two favorites with bbq- are a bit bland. Lastly, a lot of people love the mac n cheese. To me it's very creamy and not enough cheesy. We started out with trash ribs, hush puppies, deviled eggs, and toasted rav. The trash ribs were the right amount of spice, crispy and smoky. The hush puppies were moist and crisp. The deviled eggs were incredibly creamy and full of flavor. The toasted rav was better than any "staple" STL place, they were crisp, stuffed, full of flavor and the perfect amount of seasoning. Our individual entrees brought the same amount of goodness. We had pulled pork, ribs, smoked wings, a burger and for sides the BBQ chips, beans, and Mac n cheese.
