TERRIBLE. I live 3 blocks south and never went there before, after 33 years I decided to get two hero's to take home. #1 a meatball hero #2 a chicken parmigiana hero. Both were barely warm... the TWO meatball's were barely warm and had hardly and sauce at all, and the chicken parmigiana hero VERY mushy. The hero "bread"??.... was nothing like a crisp Italian hero instead it was like the bread was put into a steamer: soft and mushy like a wet sponge. And the prices... $23.00 for both! The hood has changed tremendously over the years & I miss my old peeps who once ran the deli, (Mark, Paul, Serge, etc.) but the quality is still 100% present. This is THE BEST deli for sandwiches in all of NYC!! They make their very own, cured meats -- ALL WITHOUT CHEMICALS. We usually order individual sandwiches -- but also have heros cut into quarters and served on a platter for business meetings and company lunches. The prosciutto and mozzarella are to die for...especially if you add sun-dried tomatoes. The turkey and pesto is a fan favorite too. Their salamis are the absolute best in the city -- and their bread is always super-fresh. The service is impeccable, especially for delivery. (They are always on-time for delivering to our office -- or early!) Be sure to get the Italian hero, which includes a variety of their home-cured meats. So this classic Italian deli is not far from our home and I've walked past a million times. This time I walked past HUNGRY and knowing that the folks at home might even be hangry. I thought...best to arrive with food in hand :) Reading the Yelp reviews, I decided to grab a couple Italian combos and some limonatas. I have to say, unlike some reviewers' experiences, the counter dude was super friendly and sweet. The sandwiches were huge and delicious. Not a full-on five star, not blown away, but a solid four star Italian sub/hero. Meats seemed good quality. I'd like to come back and sample the different offerings on take home salamis, etc. As a mostly pescatarian I'm no expert but I'll get the carnivores in the house to give their opinions and will report back! read more

Finally a place that can make an honest to goodness sandwich, I feel like I've been wandering in the desert for 40 years looking for this! Ordered the Italian Combo (with oil and vinegar) and it was perfect, I love that they actually slice the meat and cheese fresh on the machine, instead of some other delis in the neighborhood that try to give you something that was premade this morning or last night or who knows when. Of those cold cuts, the Italian ones(Capicola, Sopressata, ect.) are particularly fresh-tasting,delicious and flavorful.All of the Large Hot and Cold Heroes, both hot and cold, cost between 8-10 bucks.The small heroes are a dollar cheaper so the large is the better value.The restaurant features "Daily Specials" Like Roast Beef(Monday), Roast Turkey(Tuesday), Corned Beef(Wednesday), Roast Pork(Thursday) and Pastrami, Potato & Eggs and Linguine with Seafood(Friday). The eatery also serves casual Italian dishes like Baked Ziti, Lasagne & Spaghetti with Meatballs. My rating is primarily based upon the huge and spectacular large Italian Combo($9.00). It is the best I've ever had. It is stuffed with meat and cheese.The Italian Bread is tasty and very well balanced between hard and soft which as I define as not "mushy" but not hard enough to imperil any dental work in your mouth. Very, Very underestimated store. This store makes Manganaro Restaurant look like Donald Trumps penthouse. I stopped in today and I ordered a Sausage & Pepper hero. Not just any sausage and pepper hero. A homemade sausage & pepper hero. How many lunch places do you know of mix their own meat for sausage? Not too many Pepper Ann. Total price with a Snapple - $8.50. Now think about this, Awesome sloppy, homemade hero with a drink for under $10 bucks?! This place looks like its from the 60s and I cant see myself ordering the spaghetti in the warming tins but the cold cuts and meatballs look homemade. And that makes me wanna come back again. BRING CASH! If all you've read is my stressing to bring cash then my review was already helpful without you having read it all. But if you choose to read further this spot isn't completely terrible but I have been able to find better specials in the area where I could get a soda and chips with the sandwich I buy for about the same price as a sandwich alone at this place. What really irked me about this place is that I looked to make sure there was no signs saying credit card minimums or indication that they don't take credit card but no such sign exists. To my surprise I was told it's a cash business only after having my order prepared and bagged. I could have been an ass and walked away because I was really annoyed but I went next door to an ATM and had to get cash which would have not happened if a sign was posted because I DID in fact look. Long touted as a viable spot for food in the dreary area that surrounds and is Penn Station, but I really fail to see the appeal. This cash only shop offers up an inexpensive meatball parmigiana on a hoagie roll that is simply dead on arrival. Messy as could be, the sauce managed to permeate multiple layers of the takeout bag and wrappers. The sauce itself was a generic marinara that would not do well in a competition with jar sauces. The meatballs were plentiful which would have been a good thing if they were prepared by an expert hand. Sadly, the meatballs here were disarmingly bland. It is not often that one has to labor through a hefty serving of comfort food, but Salumeria Biellese proudly gives you that challenge. Admittedly, any deli is capable of serving a bad sandwich among the list of its winners, but I further tried the cacciatorni al diavolo which are a house specialty. Rather than hanging to air dry, these were sold in cryogenically sealed packs that have been refrigerated. The ingredient list included all natural ingredients, save for the sodium nitrite. Okay, for salume, but nothing special. The major producers sell comparable sausage in terms of both quality and taste. I was hoping for an artisanal delight, but ended up with a mediocre offering. In short, there was nothing to recommend a second visit here. Too bad, I really have a special place in my heart for authentic Italian delis. read more

There counter guys were sort of grumpy and didn't listen very closely about my order for two Italian hoagies. I was there mid-afternoon so maybe it had been a long day, but I was also the only guest at the counter ordering anything. The meats and cheese were all good and sliced nice (they actually have hoagie set ups pre-done so they can just slap them in the hoagie. The quality of the bread (it was tough) and the assembly (cut cockeyed, contents slapped in) was really lacking. It was convenient to get to from Herald Square but I'll probably just make the trek to one of the other Italian delis in the area that are a little further out in the future unless I'm really pressed for time. read more

Why would anyone in their right mind go to a Subway when they can get a sandwich here that's immeasurably better, and for about the same price. If they're nuts, or if they live for the ordinary are the only reasons I can think why anyone would wish to go to the Subway. The meats are top notch, none of that mass produced in a vat food you get in most places, and the bread has real crust and chew. I usually stick with the prosciutto sandwich, the Italian combo, or the sausage & peppers or meatball heroes. If you come in on a Monday, make certain to try the roast beef. It's the only day of the week they'll have it for you, and it's great. Best of all, it's where I can pick up my guanciale, which I've been addicted to now for a couple of years. I don't know anywhere else I can find it, other than Eataly, and they charge a hell of lot more. I've turned more than a couple of people in my office on to the place, and they all converted rapidly. When I've got a sandwich at my desk, people literally stop in their tracks to stare at it--they look that good. They taste that good too. read more

Very poor consistency of their sandwiches. My friend and I both ordered the Italian Combo. He got the small with roasted peppers, I got large with tomato. Look at the difference in the pic. You can barely even see the cheese on the "large" and his got so much more meat and everything. Very disappointing. If you go, try to get the nice lady to make your sandwich. I ordered meatballs, eggplant parmesan and baked ziti to go, which were all taken from a steam table at the front of the store. All were ordinary and tasted no better than supermarket steam table food you purchase by the pound. The meatballs were bland and hard. So a coworker of mine, for the past couple of months, has been getting the roast beef sandwich from this place for lunch every Monday (The Monday Special). So yesterday I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, I got there around 3:30pm (they close at 5:00pm), and all they had was the very butt end of the roast beef (just enough to make the last large roast beef hero of the day). Had it made with mozzarella and gravy. Tasty enough, but nothing to go out of the way for, for two straight months. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw soda $1 after hearing the outrageous prices of street vendors these past few days. Unlike Sung K., my chicken parm was super yummy. Lots of sauce, tender, no moist, no mayo needed, crispy perfectly crunch french roll, all of these minor details culminated in a very satisfied stomach. This is a hidden gem don't tell anyone! The deli definitely looks like a bodega but they actually serve fine Italian meats to quality Italian restaurants - think Pat LaFrieda for Italian meats. I've been to Salumeria Biellese a few times and your best bets are Italian Combo and Mortadella & Provolone. On Mondays they have the Roast Beef Sandwich Special -- the beef is extremely juicy and the gravy is hearty! They also have some kick-ass hot sandwiches including chicken parm, but beware of the cheese/sauce they will probably put you asleep in the afternoon. The price is reasonable for a small sandwich (medium size elsewhere) it's about $7 and the large one (almost foot long) it's about $8. Though, if you add tomatoes and lettuce they are 75 cents each. Again this is a deli don't expect too much in terms of customer service and decor, just get your sandwich and enjoy what you pay for. By the way the deli has received Snail of Approval from Slow Food NYC, and it is approved by my co-workers as well. read more

What a fucking ripoff. 13.50 for half a sandwich and a soda. I ordered a soppressatta and fresh mozzarella (moosarell!) and I got charged for the cheese, lettuce & tomato each. The goddamned soda was warm as fuck and the bread wasn't fresh. It stale and ridiculously chewy. The soppressatta was insanely salty not spicy, the "fresh" mozzarella was dry as hell, and the vegetables had an incredibly weird aftertaste. I should've saved my money and went to Subway. After watching a program on PBS about food done the old school hand made way, I was mesmerized by the tradition, selection and love put into the products here. After finding out that I was going to have an extra special courier in the area, I sent them an email asking about their hours and selection. They responded with a friendly message and a menu outlining all of their various products. Since the items had to survive the flight from NYC back to CA, I ended up with Salami, Bresaola, Sopressata Piccante, and Coppa. Man did I have several weeks of the best homemade sandwiches ever.
