I love this place. It's close to my house so that's a bonus. Their salads are decent, I love iceberg lettuce though I know a lot of people don't. Their fried pickles are the best fried pickles I've had in ages and my husband and son absolutely love their burgers. More than half their menu is catered to local cuisine which is great, so if you're looking for seafood, gumbo, shrimp, crawfish You'll find it there. The pub side is fun for people watching and casual get together's with friends and the restaurant side is fun for our family coming in from out of town. I have never had such amazing etouffee like Sammy's Grill. The Acadian Catfish comes with 2 pieces of fried catfish on a bed of rice and topped with crawfish etouffee. So you get 2 things in one which I love! Majority of the meals comes with garlic bread and a salad. My sister had the steak and she loved it, super affordable for some steak. I had the hamburger steak, it was so fulfilling and delicious. The gravy was a tad bit salty for my liking but it was still very yummy! Tonight, we also had crawfish which was $8/lb which is pricey but is the first week of February. It was DELICIOUS, worth every penny! It was tasted so clean and full of flavor! Excellent crawfish!!! The perfect amount of spicy and fresh, we ONLY come here for crawfish. Not crazy about the rest of their menu (I don't eat fried food and so much of it is fried). The price point for crawfish is a bit high ($6.50/lb) even in the middle of crawfish season. That being said, we did come here 2 days in a row for crawfish because it was just so dang good! Outside of crawfish season, my husband couldn't pay me to eat here. But that's a personal preference, he loves the food. Overall, people seem to really like it. Great food and cold beer. There are options to sit in the bar side or the restaurant side. Great decor inside. It has a small game room for children with a race car game and some other video game. The only drawback I have heard from others is that it gets noisy inside and although this is true, it depends on what you expect. This is a true Cajun fun experience. First time I had crawfish boil was here-- coming from California, the price is awesome! Had 2 pound of those babies and they were scrumptious! This is the first resto that introduced me to Etoufee and now it's one of my absolute favorite dish. Twist, Pull, and then Suck! That's how I was taught to eat boiled Crawfish by my local South LA hosts who knew that they were talking about. However, I didn't do so well last year at Camille's and my ajun friends took great pleasure in reminding me of my ineptitude. But although, I left a lot of meat on the plate, I achieved the desired results - a spicy tingling on my lips and lots of watering around my eyes. Gayle came to Baton Rouge when I was here and she volunteered to restore the Family Honor and the first time she had ever tried Crawfish. Our Waitress at Sammy's Grill was thrilled to teach her and I must say that my lovely Bride is now a Pro. I'm now on a heart-healthy diet, so I stuck to a spinach and chicken salad choice, which is probably considered blasphemy in these parts. At the same time, we really enjoyed our meal experience at Sammy's. This place is the real unpretentious and casual deal. It's just wooden table/chairs, concrete floors, Sports on TV, and a wide range of local folks enjoying good food. Sammy's is a locally owned restaurant in Baton Rouge. It's a huge place and a great choice for lunch or dinner. When I went it was not football season but I can easily see how it'd be one of the best places in Baton Rouge to catch a game. They specialize in boiled crawfish and although I ordered something else, I can see why. When we pulled in I could hear the very distinct roar of a boil going in the back. I watched neighboring tables receive their crawfish and immediately regretted not ordering the same. Next time.... I ordered a BLT with onion rings. The onion rings were just so-so. The BLT though was awesome. At Sammy's you don't just get a few slices of bacon on your BLT. This is the mother load of BLT sandwiches in the state! They pile the bacon on high, my friends. Really high. Atmosphere was loud but great. Service was very slow this day but giving them the benefit of the doubt it was a very busy Saturday. They are known for their crawfish and they were seasoned well. $30 for five lbs with potatoes and corn on the Cobb. It's a pretty good deal considering it's not crawfish season just yet. The crawfish could've been a little spicier but I like all my food so spicy it makes me cry ;p. The girl next to me and my friend brought medical gloves to eat the crawfish which was a great idea and she gave my friend an extra pair she was very nice. Crawfish does get messy so I would recommend doing that to anyone. The margarita I had was good I dunno if that's really a normal combo with crawfish.. but I liked it for like a dessert at the end that ensures you are full. Baton Rouge is home to some of the finest food of the south and quality Cajun eats is simply something they do best. Sammy's Grill is by no means some of the best Cajun in town, but is frequented often by locals usually during their popular lunch hour. Sammy's is like many other establishments in the area, doubling as a psuedo sports bar while offering lots of very hearty comfort food. It's a place where groups can enjoy their feast without any pretension and for a meal that doesn't come at too hefty of a price. There's a certain laid back vibe that makes for a nice experience. The staff is nice, though at times incredibly slow. I must've driven by this place a good 20 times before succumbing to the idea of devoting an afternoon session of lunchable proportions. Was quite pleased with the blackened alligator, tender chunks of meat blacked to perfection, without the slightest hint of game. An order of the jalapeno cheese fries was interesting, a baked brick of cheese with diced jalapeno mixed over a pool of crispy fries that would otherwise sound normal and delicious on another day, was for the most part, quite uninteresting. The Cajun burger is as good as advertised, best enjoyed at medium rare. The fires might not even be necessary. I've also had the pleasure of trying "fried chicken salad," which for all accounts was delicious. imagine taking the most juicy parts of a deep fried chicken and slice them up all to be mixed with the salad. After sampling a fried oyster po boy, which had more lettuce and tomato than fried oyster, was just so-so. If you're stuck trying to figure out a decent dish, try the crawfish etoufee. There's nothing like a soup of crawfish and Cajun spices over a bed of rice and a toasty garlic bread. And what it boils down to is Sammy's is just a nice neighborhood friendly establishment that dishes up some solid southern eats. I'm still waiting to get wow'd but I'm always up for a comfort food afternoon at Sammy's in good ol BR. read more

Service is slow. Food is good enough. Acadian catfish: It's okay. It's very heavy, but the catfish is fried perfectly and is still crispy even under all of their sauce. Crawfish: Very salty, but not spicy. I didn't like it, but all of my friends rave about it. I still don't know why. When I came the other day, there was a sign about all you can eat crawfish on Wednesday nights, if you're into salty, but not spicy crawfish. Fried eggplant: so good! So crunchy and the marinara sauce that comes with it complements it perfectly. Seafood platter: I got the double with shrimp and oysters. I don't think anyone could mess this up. Shrimp and oysters were a nice size. I can't remember other things I got, but I remember not being overly impressed with them or with the price I had to pay. The service could use some work. The fried shrimp were over fried and the batter is not the same as it used to be. Fried shrimp no longer comes with baked/stuffed potato (up charge for substitution) and salad. However, I was dismayed (especially as a food and beverage worker myself) to hear one of the hostesses making fun of us very loudly for inquiring about the seltzer selection, especially considering that she seemed too young to enjoy an alcoholic beverage herself. I would recommend replacing rich high schoolers with people that actually need the job to avoid employees making such a blatant error in FOH. Price was cheap compared to Houston and tastes were great. Tried their gumbo which was very good and their blueberry banana pudding was great as well. Next year (2018), Sammy's Grill will have been in business for 30 years. They are a locally owned restaurant known for their good Southern food and family-friendly atmosphere. And with three (3) locations in the Greater Baton Rouge Metro area, there's likely to be a location not too far from you. With a menu that includes lots of seafood, daily specials, steaks, "Southern Eats, burgers, Po-Boys, a lite menu and a kid's menu, there's pretty much something for everyone. My coworker has been raving about this place for months, so when the Kansas City Southern Christmas Train rolled into town, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is huge, with three separate dining rooms and a nice sized bar. There are plenty of picnic bench styled seats as well as tables that can accommodate large groups. Lots of wood paneling and bare concrete floors make for a very utilitarian / country feel. My wife wasn't too hungry and ordered a dinner salad and a cup of crab bisque. The bisque was good. Not spectacular, but not bad either. My son got the kid's fried catfish plate with fries and a side order of green beans. The fish was coated in a coarse corn meal breading but was fried very well. Nothing unique about the fries as they seemed like your garden variety fries. The green beans were doctored up with bacon and had a good smokey flavor; albeit a little salty for my liking. I ordered the grilled tuna off the lite menu and got a double order of steamed yellow squash and broccoli. The tuna was actually cooked perfectly, as I opted for medium as compared to my usual medium-rare preference. I'm guessing that it was a 6 ounce serving and it was seasoned nicely. I would probably had preferred the blackened tuna, but I was still happy with my choice. The vegetables were good but I was not expecting the dusting of Parmesan cheese on top. I love cheese, but this should be stated on the menu for those who do not like cheese. Our server (Carly) was pretty attentive and did a good job, even though she was a little busy. I'm surprised she had so many tables as I counted no less than 10 servers, most of whom did not seem as busy as Carly. I don't quite agree with my co-worker's raving rave reviews, but overall it was a pretty good experience and definitely A-Ok. read more

I had the 1/2 Shrimp Po'boy and the chicken and sausage gumbo. The gumbo was fine. However, the menus says Po'boys served on Leidenheimer French bread. It was absolutely not Leidenheimer's. I'm local New Orleans my whole life, and what I got a was an Oyster hogie or sub. Po'boys are made with New Orleans French bread only. Use of any other bread is not a Po'boy. And to add insult to injury my Oyster Hogie has 3 sad little oysters. read more

We had a party of two and had to wait 25 minutes. After being seated we got the chips and salsa appetizer which I thought the chips were over seasoned and too salty. I then ordered the shrimp lunch plate size which didn't specify whether the shrimp was grilled of fried but it wasn't a big deal, I personally don't like over fried food so I peeled the crunchy parts off and the shrimp still tasted good. With this I ordered a side of stuffed potato which was delicious also before I was served a garden salad. Now for the best part I ordered the Milky Way pie for dessert and it was yummy! It was like a brownie cheesecake. The service was great and everything was served with perfect timing. Went yesterday and was so disappointed. Ordered the chicken fried steak that I use to get all the time before the new owner took over. The steak use to be very big, good and tender. Yesterday I got a plate full of mashed potatoes with 4 very small pieces of steak It looked like the had cooked one chicken fried steak them cut it up to serve in 5 different orders. The white gravy was very bland. I didn't complain because I had my 89 year old neighbor with me and didn't have the time to wait for another plate. Plus we had already had issues with her order. She ordered the fried chicken special and asked if she could just get wings as it's easier to eat. The waiter (I want to say Ayden) was a terrific young man and is excellent at his job. Waiter said he didn't see a problem as she only wanted 2 wings and no other chicken. The manager said no so she got one wing and another big piece of chicken that was unidentifiable due to the way it was cut. Seems to me 2 little wings would mean more profit for them instead of a big piece but I guess that's his policy. I do want to mention again that the waiter was not a problem at all, if fact he was the only good experience there. The food took quite a while to come out but the wait was due to the large amount of takeout orders from the idiots who believe the epidemic bullshit they are being fed by the lying Scumbags in the media. Sammy's packs traditional Cajun cuisine in a family friendly environment. The buffalo shrimp appetizer came with 9 fried shrimp. I really enjoyed that the sauce had a bigger kick than I expected. The special that day was the gumbalaya - a big bowl of gumbo with a heaping portion on jambalaya in the middle. It was such a hearty dish, packed with chicken and sausage. I especially enjoyed the spice in the jambalaya - that was my favorite part. The shrimp etouffee was creamy and savory without tasting too shrimpy. I would definitely recommend this dish, which is only available on Thursdays. The main dishes come with a side salad - I really enjoyed the house dressing, which is a parmesan vinaigrette.
