Bday celebration cake - vanilla bean with fig
    Sandy L.

Had a great time at SanDai over the weekend for a birthday brunch celebration. Love the sunroom area, it was extremely clean and has a nice interior. Kaya French Toast | $14 | 9/10 Loved this - I always have to get a sweet dish and this hit the spot. The coconut whipped cream went really well with the brown sugar syrup and fresh fruit. Would get again! Yucca Fries | $8 | 10/10 Wow, this was the best yucca fries I've had! Perfectly fried and the aioli was amazing. Still dreaming about these :) Chicken and Waffle | $20 | 7/10 The pandan waffle with the soy sauce glaze was pretty good, otherwise the dish was a bit salty. I didn't love it but enjoyed the waffle. Nasi Lemak | $22 | 7/10 I think this was fine, the anchovies really complimented the dish. It had good flavor and was a bit spicy! Seafood Mee Goreng | $25 | 7/10 My favorite instant noodle is indomie mi Goreng. I was expected the same flavor but the noodles were a bit cooked too much over my liking. The flavor was good though and the seafood complimented it really well. Service was amazing and sweet, they were really quick and surprised us with the bday cake. Excited to come back and try their other menu offerings off of their brunch and dinner menu.

Good food, good service, good drinks. This was a solid option for dinner with some unique options I haven't seen before. While the food was delicious, I think that the value could've been a little bit better for me to give it five stars. Service was good, and the decor was lovely.

Sandai is relatively new and clean. The decor is nice and the menus are well presented. They have a coffee bar in the side of the main restaurant. The service is friendly, but a bit slow. It took about 20 minutes to take the orders and another 20 minutes for the food to arrive. They charge a 20% (post-tax) tip automatically for large groups. The food is decent. The seafood mee goreng had good noodles and (I heard) good seafood. The Soto ayam had good flavor for the noodles and chicken. The nasi lemak was decent but the rice and fried chicken were a bit dry. The chicken and waffles was drenched in a sweet syrup sauce that overpowered every other ingredient. The avocado coffee was just strange.

Freaking de-lish. Nasi Goreng is my ish! Looking for flavorful goodness then this is the place. The open kitchen allows you to watch them prep all the freshness right into your bowl/plate. Staff: GREAT, they are so nice and willing to make recommendations if you need. Note: be mindful of the hours, they close for a short period before switching to dinner. Street parking or a short walk to the parking garage.

I was soo intrigued by the allure of an Indonesian brunch. I love mee goreng instant ramen but never really had authentic Indonesian food. I ordered their most popular dishes, including pandan chicken and waffles, seafood mee goreng, and nasi goreng w/ tiger shrimp. chicken n waffles 7/10: the pandan waffles lacked the pandan flavor profile that I'm accustomed to but the color was really pretty LOLL It was paired w/ a spicy sweet sauce that had a strong flavor that honestly overpowered the dish seafood mee goreng 8/10: my personal favorite as it was very nostalgic of the instant ramen. seafood mix was a great add-on. could use a bit more flavor though nasi goreng 6/10: tiger prawn was overcooked and the rice lacked depth. I did like the shrimp chips kopi coffee 8/10: reminiscent of Vietnamese coffee (it's also made of condensed milk) but less strong. It was served warm which I actually prefer over hot. Would get again Overall, the flavors were strong but one-dimensional. I just wished there was more variety... although if you like sweet and spicy, these dishes are for you.

Roti with veg curry (contains pinto beans)

**3.5** I've had this BM'd since I saw a BA vlogger share their experience. After Hubs tried it out with friends, we decided I would give it a try. It's the old Prima location, which brought back fond memories. It's very spacious still with the Kopi Coffee bar sectioned off. We sat near the open windows to get some Vitamin D on such a gorgeous day last weekend and to people watch. The brunch menu items immediately caught my attention from roti with veg curry, coconut Cappucino, kaya french toast, to pandan beignets. Yes, I ordered all my favorites . For starters, the piping hot roti with vegetable curry had some Latin influence with the pinto beans. It had the same texture and consistency to a bowl of chili. Very flavorful and pair well with the roti. The coffee tea drinks came next. I felt my Cappuccino wasn't very hot but the flavor of the foam. OMG. They torched the top and it almost brought out the flavor of coconut foam. It wasn't as sweet as I hoped (which the server did warn me about) but I added some coconut syrup from my French Toast and it was perfect. Speaking of French toast...this was a unique item as it had Kaya spread in the middle. I was so excited about this as I've never had Kaya toast outside of Singapore. Ngl, I was a bit underwhelmed. I could not taste any of the kaya that was supposed to stuffed french toast. It was more like a thin spread inside. It seems like the French toast process drowned out the kaya taste OR it needed a thicker helping of kaya or a base to swirl in the kaya like coconut cream. The coconut syrup did help a bit and salvage the French Toast for it's namesake. Also, the whipped cream was all melted so the presentation was hopeful but the dish was barely warm by the 1st bite. I tried some of Hubs noodle dish with seafood. It was spicy with a kick so I did not eat too much of it. Packed with lots of flavor. My DD'S shrimp and Grits was coconutty and delicious. Also a kick of heat. Both of their dishes, again, wasn't very hot either. I was hoping some dessert could be the saving grace, banking on the pandan beignets to be amazing. Oif they were just beignets with the coconut syrup, yes they were good. Nicely fried and crispy. But they were supposed to be pandan which I couldn't taste. Hubs really wanted the avocado coffee as he raved about last time. But they ran out. Bummer! Overall, the dishes were quite unique. Flavors were somewhat there. But, it kinda misses the mark for me.

Farmers market Gado gado with added tofu
    Rita W.

Great service and beautiful food, but what was presented did not match with the price. There wasn't that special factor to justify the price in my opinion. I would go back, but more so for the coffee selections and to try their pastries. Food wise, if it was a third of the price, sure. I tried their avocado kopi, and that was really good! 5 stars for that portion. Creamy, slight avocado flavor, can taste the espresso. Yum. My friend tried the coconut cappuccino and that looked amazing. Nice bruleed layer on top. Fancy! If I recall correctly, my friend tried the gado gado (Romanesco, Brocollini, Beets, Balinese Black Rice, Beet Greens, Watermelon Radish, Roasted Peanut Sambal, Sambal Citrus Vinaigrette, Vegetable Chips) and they asked if she wanted to to add protein like tofu or shrimp, and she chose tofu. I'm sure the addition price was noted somewhere, but they didn't mention how much extra it'll be. It was good, but not omfg gotta get this again good, and simple bowl of veggies and tofu for around $30?? Cmon, get that at Urban Plates for a fraction of the cost or something. I tried the mushroom congee since I was watching a show on Hulu and that was mentioned and I thought hmmm that sounds kind of amazing. What a disappointment! Extremely overpriced and they asked if I wanted egg in it and I said sure, and that was an additional $2 or $3. Congee with sesame oil, ginger, scallion, shiitake mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, and a side of soy sauce for $24 before the egg addition. Ridiculous as it wasn't even that great. Edible, yes, but flavor wise and lack of mushroom flavor was disappointing. Texture of some of the items in there seemed off as well. It's like fancy restaurant portion size and pricing (appetizer-esque), but lacking that quality and flavor. Good environment. Enjoyed the time here overall, but my food was just a no. One to two stars for that, but excellence on the caffeine.

It was a nice warm Saturday and I was visiting a friend in the Walnut Creek area. Knowing that I grew up in Singapore she recommended this restaurant which is an Indonesian Singaporean restaurant. The restaurant was located just off Main Street but it was in a popular bar/restaurant area and parking can be an issue. Since it was lunch time parking was ok. There are two doors to the restaurant, one that enters through the coffee shop area and the other directly into the restaurant. Service was excellent and we had as great time with our server. I ordered the seafood fried rice and my friend ordered the burger as she was unsure of the various Indonesian dishes in the menu. Both items arrive quickly and I enjoyed the fried rice. The sambal had a nice level of spiciness so that it did not overpower the dish itself. My friend did enjoy the burger and the fries were nicely done. Atmosphere was very quaint with items from Indonesia adorning the walls and shelves. I was intrigued by the wayang kulit puppets hanging on the wall. Only gripe was the price itself. Expect to pay about $35 per person tip included. The restaurant was about 65% occupied indoors and there is patio seating available.

Ah-mazing! Ever since coming back from a trip to Singapore and Malaysia, we've been on the look out for this type of food. We came here with my spouse's business partner and his wife and the food is delicious! The restaurant has a very modern and minimalist aesthetic which showcases the beauty of the food. The service was friendly and great. Each person gave a warm welcome and it reminded me of feeling like I was home. We ordered the Beef Rendang, Laksa, Ayam Percek, Gado Gado, Tahu Goreng, and Nasi Uduk (rice w/pandan, lemongrass, coconut & lime leaf) and Nasi Kuning (rice w/turmeric, lemongrass and coconut). Oh the fragrance, the flavor, and yumminess! Everything tasted amazing! The chef accommodated removing peanuts in the Tahu Goreng as we had a food allergy in our party but it still tasted great! I really enjoyed the two types of rice as it paired well with each of the different dishes we ordered. I found out that they have a coffee bar during the day time and I told my spouse that I will want to come back during the day time so we can try the coffee and beverages. Overall, it was a great dinner and I hope to bring others here so that they can try it out too.

Food is and presentation are great. Atmosphere is peaceful. I wanted to try this place for so long but sadly my experience was quite disappointing :/ For starters, the atmosphere is mediocre, it's a dim lit restaurant with a decent amount of seating but it definitely feels congested with all the tables shoved inside. The presentation of the food and of the restaurant holds up in Walnut Creek but honestly with the amount of frustration you'd likely endure you'd hardly notice it. I came in on Valentine's day around 6:30PM. I didn't have a reservation so I expected to wait 30-45 minutes which is also what was expressed to me upon check in. They expressed that they could save my phone number and text me when my table was ready. I never received a text message, but luckily i was just inside for the duration of the wait time. We waited almost an hour before i checked in with the host who seated us about 10 minutes later. Upon being seated at our table, i was pretty excited to try everything out so my partner and i decided to do the Valentines menu special. Upon being greeted by our waiter, i expressed HEAVILY "please don't put nuts on ANYTHING. If there are nuts included in a dish, please place it ON THE SIDE." I followed up with our waiter to ensure which dishes typically come with nuts so I could be sure if any error should occur I could double check it before my partner ate the dish. It took about 30-45 minutes before the APPETIZER came out. The sauce for the satay sampler, was NOT initially place on the side instead it was drizzled on top. The executive chef had given us the dish, and i had expressed that we requested the sauces to be placed on the side rather than on top. Rather than apologetic, they seemed more annoyed and took our dish and walked off to replace it. It took about 10-15 more minutes before received our replacement. My partner and I were pretty satisfied and didn't mind that we had waited for so long. However, that soon changed as we continued to wait for the remainder of our dishes to come out. They brought the fruit salad out, again with nuts on top. It's completely understandable that slip ups happen, but this was the second time i had to ask for a replacement and again I was met with annoyance rather than any sense of understanding. Not only that, but it seemed like there was a lack of urgency as our dishes continued to take way too long to come out. They expressed about an hour and a half into our meal that the bisque had run out but nobody had informed our waiter until we had to ask about the remainder of our dishes. They expressed that they would discount our meal since we didn't receive the bisque. Then they chose to bring out the bisque anyways later on. The whole meal altogether had taken practically 2-3 HOURS NOT INCLUDING EARLIER WAIT TIME. My main issue with the restaurant was not only the quality of the food but also the quality of the service. We had been patient the entire evening up until we were met with impatience. This restaurant was quite honestly the worst of Walnut Creek. I have tried different places in Walnut Creek and cannot say I have ever been met with such poor attitude. Our waiter had only apologized to us at the end of the night after we were about to practically just pay and walk out. It was also apparent that they were EXTREMELY understaffed even though the holidays would be expected to have a high volume of customers. Being that our waiter was one of maybe three others, we also did not receive any check ins throughout the meal. Instead we had to flag our waiter down for any concerns. The food was decent at best but not even worth the price. The satay sampler was probably the best dish we had the whole night and I can't even say that was worth coming by for. Actually a few hours after the meal, my partner and I both felt unwell and ended up throwing up most of the food. This restaurant is not worth the visit on any given day. The parking in the area is not good, it is towards the further outskirts of the main shopping area of Walnut Creek. The restaurant looks decent at best and the service is the worst. You can find much better food anywhere else along the main strip of restaurants in Walnut Creek without regretting your meal.

Fun fact this place use to be Prima an Italian restaurant I use to go when I lived here years ago. Anywho, celebrated dinner here with the ladies and we had a great time great company. They were having a mixer event this night and had a DJ. It was lively and fun. However I felt the food and drink flavors were a bit lacking I can't describe it but something else was missing and or some flavors didn't blend well for my taste. Service was good in the beginning staff was friendly but then it tapered off towards the end, it took a while to get our food and drinks, perhaps because it was busy that night. I am not sure if I'll come back again but maybe to give it one last shot... tbd

2.5/5 stars. My family is from Indonesia so I know a thing or two about authentic Indo/Malay food and this is certainly not it. My friend and I came here on a Sunday afternoon so be advised they have a different menu than I posted below which is their brunch menu. Offerings are very limited and they don't offer the option to order from their main menu so I didn't like I was so limited to like 4 main dish offerings. There's also a coffee shop within the restaurant where they offer Kopi but we got a cup to go on our way out and it was very acidic and gave us a stomachache. I knew walking in with the chic upscale ambience and the fact its in Walnut Creek that this food would not be authentic, but that's okay if its flavorful! Unfortunately, it was not. I ordered the Nasi Goreng and my girlfriend ordered the Nasi Lemak. I just don't understand how you have Indo/Malay/South East Asian food that is bland! How is that even possible given the flavors in this region? They completely Americanized this which again is fine, but there was no flavor. Portions were pretty good given I had left overs but pricing is absurd. Since they're going for upscale the price reflects that but paying $27 for 3 prawns and tons of rice is insane. Not to mention my prawn was undercooked as pictured below. Service was just okay. We were seated quickly and she came a couple of times at first just to get our order in, but once we got our food we never saw our server again. Didn't fill up our water, and had to flag down someone else to get the check and a box. They really only got the 2.5 stars from my based on ambiance and okay portions. This place does not represent Malay food people, you've been warned.

But on the whole, would eat again if I had to be in Kaiser during meal time. All that with a can of Dr. Pepper for less than $20. Won't win any food awards but what a great location for unexpected visitors at Kaiser across the street. Only wish they would install a crosswalk. Saw a few people jaywalk because they refused to walk to the end of the block to cross the street.
