Nice to see that Indonesian and singaporean food is starting to make their rounds in the Bay Area. This place is a bit of a hybrid cafe/eatery. Appears that the inside/back of the restaurant is closed during the day and they only open the cafe/coffee bar and the semi-patio seating area for brunch. Basically go in through the cafe as the other door is locked, and you order at the counter first and then sit down. Was not busy when we came on a Saturday for brunch/lunch. Wait staff were all very nice and gave recommendations. The pastries at the coffee bar portion looked good, but all appeared to be sweet. Would have been nice if they had some savory options. The menu for lunch was a bit limited but tried the burger and the nasi goreng. Both were delicious. The nasi goreng also came with 3 large jumbo shrimp which was perfectly cooked, and the dishes were not too salty or oily. Pictures for the menu would help as well as the pictures on yelp did not seem to match up to some of the dishes on the menu. Regarding drinks, the latte could have been stronger. Same for the iced coffee. Overall, a bit pricey, but would come back to try out others options and maybe for dinner as the lunch menu was a bit limited. Beautiful ambience appetizers were tasty and very fortunate to have met the executive chef. My only complaint was the half chicken appeared to have a pasty thick coat of mush. My impression was the half chicken would be somewhat crispy/roasted/ grilled and warm, but the mushy texture with the grilled chicken was not as appetizing as I had hoped. I had the pleasure of dining here this past Wednesday. The restaurant is beautiful. The music was upbeat and light; we were able to converse easily. We had a reservation and were able to sit near the chef. The open kitchen was just really nice, like you get a show and a meal?! We ordered drinks (I got the Spicy Mangga Margarita and my sister got the Puteri Naga) they were both well balanced and delightful. I don't think the Margarita was actually that spicy, but it was a good marg! When our food came out, I was unprepared for how my palate would be rewarded. I genuinely enjoyed everything we ordered, except the Beef Rendang. I don't like pineapples and we got it on the side, but it overwhelmed me. The flavor was just kinda heavy compared to everything else. I would try it again, just with a different spread. The Stuffed Whole Chicken Wings and Nasi Goreng Rice were show stoppers; you must dare to try these. They were just fantastic. The flavor profile of each was just so incredible. The chicken was juicy and had this yummy sauce. The Nasi Goreng had this umami; idk it was just really good. I hadn't had such exceptional food out at a restaurant in a long time. The shrimp was good; it had a nice sauce as well. Later in the night, my sister ordered the Kelapa Punch and it was surprisingly really good (hehe I had a sip of all her drinks.) We ended the night with the most spectacular dessert: Lapis Gulung. Initially I wasn't sold on it, I only had one bite of one thing, but eating every element together, so freaking good. I contemplated getting it to go as well. I heard that they make pretty much everything in house which is no easy feat. There is love in that kitchen; in the restaurant. I should also mention, our server was a rockstar. She was friendly and there when we needed something. I had a really nice dinner with my sister and I will be coming back. We had such a pleasant night. I hope all who have the chance to dine here, come with an open mind and a hearty appetite. Try different things, you never know you may find your favorite meal here. My fiance and I enjoyed date night here tonight. We had the most amazing service from Jeffery our server. He was attentive and professional. The sous chef Ameea and executive chef Nora prepared absolutely delicious food. EVERYTHING was full of flavor and cultural richness. The bartender father and son duo made us fabulous drinks too. Everything was delicious. There were four if us so we ordered at least half of the menu. All four of the satays, the stuffed chicken wings, blue rice salad, the turmeric rice and the rice with the fried egg. for entrees the roasted half chicken, baby octopus and the beef Rangoon. all the food was presented beautifully and was perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful. we also had two desserts, the roulade with coconut caramel sauce and the dragon fruit sorbet with meringue wafers. The service was friendly and casual but attentive and the food came out of the kitchen in a very well-paced way. For a restaurant that only opened a week or so ago I never would have known by the food and service we received. They clearly trained well and worked hard on perfecting things in the kitchen and front of the house before opening their doors to the public. I would definitely recommend SanDai and will be back to try other dishes in the future. read more

I was shocked this place wasn't so busy on a Friday evening. It's a great location- right on the Main Street (literally) and the ambiance and decor is amazing. Cozy yet maintains a chic aesthetic. We were seated right away and given drink and wine menu. Service was excellent. Food was delivered quickly after ordering and HOT. We ordered chicken satay, garlic noodles and tahu goreng (tofu). EVERYTHING was delicious. The garlic noodles are ramen style but the flavor was great. The chicken satay was very tasty and served with an amazing coconut rice- I want to order just that rice next time. The tofu dish was by far my favorite! Personally, the tofu could have been crispier ( that's how I prefer tofu) but the sauce this was served with is so yummy it doesn't make a difference. The heat on these dishes is both temp and spice level. I'm wading in the spice waters so this was kind of my limit, but if you're a spice aficionado, then it'll be no sweat handling the spices in this dish. Truly one of WC gems! In a sea of very mid restaurants this one stands out. The ambience is adorable- similar to something you would see in Mykonos (it's Indonesian food). The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. And the food- superb. I doubt many of us have tried Indonesian food, but it's full of flavor, texture and is indescribably delicious. This is a place I've been excited to go to for a while, but unfortunately it was just okay. The website looks so beautiful and enticing. My dining experience did not match what I expected. My partner and I ordered the satay trio (our server was very nice to offer us one piece of each type of satay on the menu), the nasi uduk, the beef jerky, the half chicken, and the beef rendang. There was a moment we considered ordering the Branzino, but the server was unable to tell us how fresh the fish was (if it gets brought in daily, comes in frozen, etc.). My favorite item on the menu was definitely the rice. I'm Persian, so I have pretty strong opinions about rice and this rice was aromatic, fluffy, well seasoned. It looked great with its green hue -- just a hit all around! Unfortunately, nothing else was all that great to me. This was my first time having Indonesian food, so I could be unaware of the standard, but almost everything tasted sweet to me. The chicken, the chicken sauce, the beef jerky, the satay sauce, the beef rendang -- all sweet. Balance of flavor and texture is really important in cuisine and there was nothing sour enough, spicy enough, salty enough, or fatty enough to make any of the dishes feel well rounded. On top of that, the texture variety also leaves a little to be desired; I wanted to so badly have something crunchy or crispy, but only the half chicken came with a very small side salad that I was trying to portion out for the whole meal. The half chicken itself also wasn't very tasty beyond the outside of it, the inside was lacking. My partner couldn't eat his beef rendeng because it was too mushy. The satay was okay, I think the chicken was the best out of the three. I find satays to often be dry, and the chicken was moist, well seasoned, and had good flavor. The shrimp satay just tasted like regular shrimp to me and the mushroom was good. All in all, an okay experience. The food was okay, not great, and not what I had hoped for. The executive chef did stop by our table to say hi and check in with us which was nice, but it wasn't enough to justify the $130 meal we paid for. I may come back to see if the brunch is better, but the rice is not enough to bring me back for dinner. read more

A lot of missed potential here. Got the chicken rice and nasi lemak. To be fair, the portion sizes are quite generous. The price is 3x what it is in SEA but you get 3x the amount of food. One entree is enough for 2 people, easily. I was quite excited about the chicken rice because the one at Kopitiam Killiney in Palo Alto wasn't bad and SanDai is higher end. But it was possibly the worst chicken rice I've ever had in the US. The rice is ok, but the chicken is not tender at all. It was cooked at too high of a temperature. There was a shocking amount of meat, but it would have been better to have less food but cooked with more skill. The soup was surprisingly sour, which is unusual for chicken rice. Nasi lemak was again quite generous in portion size, with way more chicken and rice than you usually get. Flavor wasn't bad other than the fried fish being too salty. The rice was slightly undercooked, so it was still slightly hard in the middle. The egg seemed low quality for the price point. Would suggest frying it if using cheap eggs. It was soft boiled, which makes the quality difference easier to notice. In aggregate, quantity seems to be prioritized over quality here. The more casual Kopitiam Killiney somehow has higher quality food. read more

We learnt about this restaurant from an ad in a local magazine. After checking out its ratings on Yelp, which is above 4 stars, we decided to give them a try (dinner) this week. The restaurant looks newly established and the surroundings look fine. The food presentation was good (looks better in my photos) but the taste was more of a "meh". Their service, however, leaves much to be desired, especially given the fact that the restaurant was not really busy at the time. 1/ the waitress seldom checked on us and one of our dishes was completely forgotten; 2/ Most of the time, waiters and waitresses were congregated around the kitchen counter. Looks like they were busy tasting the food from the dishes with their fingers. This restaurant is trying to follow the trend of having an open kitchen, so we can see these actions from a close distance. What a interesting view! Not sure which tables were lucky enough to get these fingered dishes. They were facing back to the customers and there was no surprise that empty dishes were piled up on our table and we had to patiently wave our hand for the water refill and final check. Are we going to have dinner in this restaurant again, probably not. There are plenty of good restaurants in Walnut Creek. read more

One of the worst restaurants I have been to. Loud, food has little to no taste, fish was fishy, best was the appetizers. Ordered a dish that had 3 small shrimp, $20. Service was slow, everyone around us, although sat after us received their appetizers and drink. Took repeated asking for our drinks as we watched the bartender pour for other orders submitted after ours. Overrated and overpriced for the quality of food. My party and I won't be back. read more

The food was tasty and the service was good but unfortunately, I have to leave a one-star review because I told the server ahead of time that I have celiac and was assured twice that the Epok Epok Sayur (similar to empanadas) were wheat free and gluten free. After I ate half, the server rushed over to tell me they were not in fact gluten free and the dough had wheat in it. She was apologetic and took it off our bill so I didn't want to make things difficult there, but the one star review is because the item was marked WF (wheat free) on the menu and that's pretty irresponsible to do when that's clearly not the case. While my symptoms are not acute (i.e. they do not appear immediately after eating gluten), they are very disruptive and often lasts for 4-6 wks. Overall, I am posting this mainly to provide a warning for fellow celiacs that this spot is unfortunately not gluten-safe :( read more

When they just opened, foods were excellent. I am sure the chef is different now. We went there few days ago, the Grilled Chicken was tough and no flavor at all. The Chicken Rice was no taste at all and tough. This chicken menu is very famous in Singapore (Hainan Chicken Rice). They should try it at Chicken Meet Rice in Santa Clara that is closest to the authentic one. Chicken Satay was just a boiled chicken with the topping sauce on top of it. Good thing they use dark meat so it's tender at least. The only I like was the Fried Rice with Salted Fish. Everything were presented very nice. Waitress was super friendly and nice. What a lovely restaurant! We came in for lunch and got the seafood mee goreng and the pea flower rice dish. Both were delicious and well presented. The waitstaff were also great, very kind and responsive (eg, making sure we always had water). We sat in the quieter front area by the windows, which was a really nice way to enjoy the sunny day while getting a view into the well-decorated interior. The avocado kopi was so good & was a really clever way to take advantage of the creaminess of the avocado to counter the coffee. They were very generous with the kaya butter for the kaya toast as well & I thought the nasi goreng had a nice balance of flavor. Came here a few days ago and was mesmerized by the ambience, everything is so beautiful, you feel transported into an island. Service was impecable, we were taken to our table right away our server was very knowledgable on the culture and the history behind Sandai. We order the puteri naga which was the perfect balance between fruity and spicy, for main course we got the nasi lemak and the mee goreng per our server recommendation and was delicious, the blue rice is just perfect totally recommended! Planned to have brunch here at 11 am on a Saturday . I did the yelp reservation and was late 7 mins . The restaurant pretty much open literally open tables everywhere. Wanted to sit on the terrace part but the host only gave us bar seat or inside seating because there was only 2 of us and the terrace seats is for 3 or more people . Which doesn't make sense when ur restaurant is empty . So we decided to just sit inside and the host had the audacity while sittin us to say " your late so next time you come just call and if you want to sit outside on the terrace you need to add it on your notes on the reservation " ummm okay you already ruining my morning with that attitude . There are many ways to say and approach the situation . We decided to leave because ain't no way I will sit there after you talked to me like that . This place is a restaurant and coffee bar. I only tried their coffee bar. The coffee bar is designed and catered for people on the go and is on the side and even has a separate entrance to the restaurant. There is no additional seating to just gather at the coffee side. The espresso here is smooth, nice rich and bold. Very delicious! Definitely unique types of latte flavors compared to traditional coffee places. The staff is super friendly and were very informed and really good at reading their customers needs. read more

Nice to see something finally open up in the old Prima building. Ambience was ordinary, fairly clinical and acoustics are a little harsh and cafeteria like. On the plus side great service, good wine list and the food was well executed- the jicama salad was tasty, as were the huge chicken wings.
