This is my families favorite restaurant. My kids ask to celebrate everything here! Last night we celebrated the last night of summer and it was wonderful like always. The food is so yummy ( I love the chicken sandwich and fruit salad), drinks are awesome, and the desserts are to-die-for. I can't pick just one to recommend but my husband says Jills Cheesecake all the way. I heard a lot of good about this restaurant so we went to try it one evening. we arrived at 8:30 ( close at 9 ) we were greeted by being told they close at 9. Not a good start. We were sat and we looked at menus.with in a couple minuets we were asked if ready to order I said not yet. Then another server was walking around us saying order the chicken salad. A minute later we were asked if ready to order. This continued until I just said I guess we do not have time to eat here and we left. I called and left a message for owner , she called back with in 24 hours and seemed very concerned , said that it should not matter when we got there should not have been handled that way and wanted me to let her know when we would go back in so she could make sure we had a good experience. Of course I would not call to let her know when i was going back as I did want any treatment other then what they normally give customers. Ok , jump forward 2 months , last weekend ... we went again , 7:30 this time. Greeted and said to sit any where. not long after menus we were asked what we wanted to eat , not enough time to look menu over so said no , then they came back shortly and asked again. ( so yes seems like great service , right ? But it was taking me back to the hurried up get out we want to close feeling as last visit. We ordered , had to try the famous chicken salad , and I tried the fried shrimp. sides were french fries , onion rings and green beans. The bread that was brought out was good , drinks we had water. we were asked a few times how we were doing just after the meal came out. we started eating , I drank my glass of water , but found no one was coming to check on us and could not seem to get anyone attention in normal ways for water refill. I had to get up with my glass and find a server and ask for more. we finished eating and no one had come back to the table , since we did not eat the first time I did not know if you had to go to station to pay the bill. I asked a couple next to us if we had to go pay on the way out or do they bring to table, They said the will bring to table "eventually " and chuckled as though they had been there before. So while wanting service I watched and all the servers were very busy prepping for the next day. so food ? well I did not care for Chicken salad , my date said it was ok , I thought prepared well but I did not care for the Lavender taste. The Fried shrimp was very good ! The onion rings were good. The french fries were old and stale tasting and the green beans were very mushy. So there is more ! we finally just got up and went to the register as it was clear the bill was not going to come to us , were stood there and when someone saw us they said " Have a good Night and Thanks " I said Ok but I need my check to pay. He was dumbfounded . he started poking at the screen asking what we had , I told him , poked some more and asked what table and what we had , I told him , he said some one screwed up and walked off , went to the bar like area asked a woman there and then came back , Asked again what we had , said someone screwed up . This was stupid , who cares , I told him what we ordered , just put in in and let me pay and get out , so he asked again what we had and I just did not care anymore I told him and he finally gave me a number , I paid and we left . NEVER TO RETURN AGAIN !!!! I texted Sandy , said I was wanted to talk about this , told her I had talked to her about the last failed trip. She said she remembered and could not wait to hear about this time. She was busy but would call me. I have been dining there since it opened totally a hidden gem. I have hosted baby showers there and lunch is always a treat. Robert even said prayers for our baby showers. My mother who is 96?is spoiled for the breads! I always come home with extra food due to the size of the portions. I tell everyone go once and you shall return. Placed a to-go order on the Saturday before Mother's Day and picked it up Mother's Day. In the rush I didn't notice they didn't give us our $60 dollars in soup, just the quiche's. Anyways, 4 messages later and my wife still hasn't heard back from them. I'm pretty accommodating but have no patience for bad customer service. Verbally assaulted by an employee who showed aggressive attitude to me and my 14 year old sister after we arrived 45 minutes before closing. We were attempting to make an order and this gentlemen was rude for no apparent reason. My husband asked if he had a problem and he threw the bread on the floor, yelled, and told us to get out. When asked for a manager he told my husband to step outside and he would handle it. We were completely blindside by the encounter as we just came to order food. I understand the frustration that they were trying to close but we DID arrive 45 minutes early, there was no reason to act the way he did. His fellow employees had to drag him to the back. What was troubling was he would not give his name, no manager was on duty and none of the employees offered his name either. My little sister was very scared of the man. We have been coming to Sandy Mcgrees for many years, catering for church events and family functions and this has put a horrible taste in our mouth. read more

Piece of information - In spite of the fact that reviews on Yelp and the restaurant's own webstie ("Diners are welcome to bring their own beer, wine, champagne or spirits which will be **served by our attentive staff**") imply there is table service, and Yelp's info says "Waiter Service:Yes," this is a place-your-order-at-the-counter place. I should have known it was a bad sign when a group of people outside looked in the front door and were pleased that there was no line. Perhaps there is table service after you have placed your order and been seated (although I did not see any in the time I was waiting for the people in front of us to place their order), but in that case why not go whole hog and take your order at your table? The only reason I waited for the people ahead of us is that they seemed to be placing a take-out order, and I assumed we would be seated after they had done so. Wrong guess. We left because standing at the counter while a less-than-friendly woman wrote down our order on a pad was not our idea of a good way to begin our meal. I had considered taking them up on the website's offer to bring a bottle of wine, but I'm glad I didn't - I think the counter lady would have looked at me like I was crazy if I had. Of course, the restaurant can operate in any way it wishes, but if I want to order at the counter I will go to Mickey D's. I'm just putting out the information that the restaurant's website and some of the Yelp reviews are a bit misleading about what kind of place it is. Oh, and - the restaurant has two different listings for some reason, so check out both of them if you want to see all the reviews. Update - the duplicate listing is gone, and Yelp now says there is no waiter service. Not sure what the big deal is about this place for locals. Lady taking orders was all business and no personality. Our server was just flat out rude when one of my co-workers pointed out that she did not receive her soup but instead got a fruit salad. The server kept saying over and over "well that's what she wrote down." My co-worker explained to her that she was allergic to strawberries and all she had to say was "well that's what she had down." No I'm sorry, no apology, no customer service. Corn and crab chowder was watery, and crab was pretty much absent. The spinach dip was bland and cheese was not melted enough. Goods: The food is delicious and I would give my first born for the poppy seed dressing, always served with the tastiest fresh fruit. I've never had anything there that wasn't great. Most come here for the "famous" broccoli cheese soup. Cute vintage feel. There is one guy who has worked here FOREVER and he is great. Always super friendly and has a good story to tell. Bads: Overpriced. You have to wait in a normally long line to order and then get assigned your table. The really need to reconsider how orders are taken. Even when I have called in an order, I've had to wait longer than I'd like just to pay even though my food is just sitting there. Counter help not very friendly. This is an amazing little spot! The food is wonderfully fresh and house made, the staff sweet and helpful and the Mexican chocolate cake to die for!! I love the spinach salad, so Jan's Plate is my go to. It has a generous portion of fresh fruit- actually edible fruit, not a few pieces of underripe melon, as so many places use for fruit. It has an awesome spinach salad with the best tasting dressing ever, and a nice scoop of chicken salad. I usually have to bring that home because I need room for....Mexican fudge cake- yum! If you have the fortune of coming out to Richmond for a day, I would recommend stopping by Sandy McGee's. Being a native of Richmond, I can say that this place is definitely a favorite of the locals. I tend to go there a lot when I visit my parents who still live in Richmond. Best known for its chicken salad and broccoli cheese soup, I would recommend those first. The other soups that I've tried and enjoyed are the chicken tortilla and the crab & corn chowder. The soups come with crunchy garlic bread that has a little kick to it (ask for more bread if you really like it--they're happy to oblige). The sandwiches are really big and can be shared by two people. My parents really like the 6th Street sandwich, which is a meat of your choice (a lot of it), mayo, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, baby swiss, spinach, lettuce, and tomato. As for me, my favorite is the max-out sandwich--turkey, swiss, and spinach salad. The combination of the turkey, the swiss, and the sweet (with bacon!) spinach salad really makes the sandwich sing in my mouth. I would recommend the pecan pie, too. My family usually buys one or two for our Thanksgiving meals or Christmas meals. The ingredients used in the food are fresh. You can see it when you get your food, and you can definitely taste it. A while back, Sandy McGee's had another restaurant in Sugar Land, but I think it closed down. As much as I wish Sandy McGee's continued success, I'm glad that it remains a locals-popular place. read more

Food is ok at best, service is very slow. It is an order at the counter kinda place where your check is closed prior to being seated and there is a spot on the credit card receipt for a tip! So I am from out of town and decided to stop here for lunch. I'll start by saying that the food was fine, but that was about the only good thing I have to say. As someone who's never been here before, I was extremely confused by their ordering system, it wasn't very clear what was going on. I stood at the entrance for a good couple of minutes (I was by myself, mind you, so I felt very uncomfortable). After that failed, I tried to get a couple of waiters attention, and even when one made eye contact with me she quickly turned around and ignored me. Now I was annoyed, I was about to turn around and leave when a customer ended up pointing me in the right direction. I will say it's not really with it, all they have to eat is sandwiches, and the service was terrible. Awful service. This place needs help organizing it's staff. It has no processes whatsoever for waiting tables, serving food or checking out customers. I asked for extra bread since I ordered two orders of soup and only received 2 bags of bread. Was told that was all they could give me. Ohh Lord! Where do I begin? We drive 30 minutes to this place because I can't get over their buttery crispy bread or their broccoli cheese soup. I always order their broccoli cheese soup because it is so good. It's spicy and so creamy yet not heavy. It's light cheesy heaven! Dip their buttery bread in the soup (or crumble it into the soup) and your mouth will thank you forever, I swear. We also got a fruit salad and everything was fresh! So refreshing and sweet, it came with some sort of fruit dressing which was nice not really a fan of it but the fruit yet so simple but so delicious. There was a little issue, I specifically asked the waitress if there wasn't pineapple (allergic to it, t gives me shortness of bread) and she said no so I just went ahead and ordered it, guess what? Get my salad with two big chunks of life threatening fruit! It was my responsibility to tell the waitress I was allergic to them but I didn't, so next time I will. My only complaint is that this lovely, quaint restaurant in historic Richmond is counter service. I usually go out of my way to find an interesting restaurant with a nice wait staff, and if Sandy had it i would go more often. I grew up in the Richmond/Rosenberg area and Sandy Mcghees has always been a family favorite. It truly is one of Richmond's gems. It is amazing how much this little diner has evolved into a quaint, intimate, eatery. Everyone knows that the broccoli and cheese soup is to die for! I have gone there to buy a quart to take home. The staff is extremely personable. There has been a few times that I have gone and it has taken forever to get my food, but they were so sweet about it and would always give us a free dessert for waiting. They typically hire high school students but the manager has been there since I was a little girl. It's obvious that they carefully select their staff because I have never come across a grouchy waiter or waitress there. They are all extremely friendly and personable. Their menu isn't anything special, but what they do with these basic diner meals is what makes it so special! They put the good ol Sandy McGhees twist! At night it is the perfect place to come for an intimate night out, maybe even bring a bottle of wine. It is BYOB but they do provide wine glasses for you. This was a yelp find. We were driving down the road near Richmond and this one popped up. With all of the good reviews, we were hopeful. First off, if you want beer or wine, you need to bring it yourself...something about being too close to a church...not their fault and we'll remember for next time (I suppose that's a bit of a spoiler :) ). This place is nestled in a quaint part of Richmond on Morton St. It's very nice and comfortable. The staff was nice and explained to us a lot of the things we didn't know (like a 'shot' of soup is really a shot). All the good reviews have it right here. The food is really good and the atmosphere nice. What really impressed me were the portions -- except for the ginormous cake, everything seemed a reasonable size. I won't go into details, other than I LOVED the avocado soup. And the crab & corn soup is incredible (luscious lumps of creamy crab)! And the tea was exquisite -- get the fruity stuff. Sandy McGees has been around for years in the Richmond/Rosenberg area. It has been a local favorite and great for girly brunches, lunches, and small events like baby and wedding showers. They have expanded their menu over the years. Known for their salads, broccoli cheese soup, cayenne sprinkled buttered bread rounds and fruit salad with poppyseed dressing. This visit was to celebrate my birthday. Momsy got the Anne's plate and I got the spinach and onion quiche plate. The food of my childhood didn't seem to match what I had at this meal. I remembered it being better. The quiche was lacking flavor and the bread rounds weren't cayenne-y enough and seemed to be saturated in butter. While the meal was unmemorable I still haven't written it off. The fruit salad was great. The prices are also on the higher end for salad/ lunch type meals also ( my quiche plate was @$12). It's definitely a ladies' place. Men can eat here, but they probably won't like it. There planty of sandwiches and entrees on the menu, but the sides are extremely limited. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with fries. The chicken sandwich was very tough. It was not marinated or tenderized in any way. It kinda seems like they didn't even try. The fries were the same as you'd find at McDonalds, but not quite as good. I ordered a fantastic-looking banana pudding because I have always heard how great Sandy McGees desserts were. This one? Not so much. It was pretty, but completely underwhelming. I don't know how pudding can be dry, but this was. There were hardly any bananas, and way too many crunchy vanilla wafers. The cookies should be at least a little moist from the pudding, but they were not. To top it off, our dessert was delivered before our entrees. We told the server we hadn't even gotten our food yet, and... While I was in mid sentence, he rudely replied "Yeah we're getting back up, and I gotta get 'em out," and disappeared." Such a super cute and friendly town restaurant. A ton of friends we know have been suggesting we try this place because the food is AMAZING. And they were not wrong! This place embodies that "everyone is family" vibe by their customer service and their food. You can tell everyone knows everyone, even when they don't! The food was to die for! Very homey, delicious cafe type food. You can't go wrong with fruit, soup, and sandwiches for lunch. We've also been told that we NEED to try the desserts so next time we will! The atmosphere was very calm and warm. You feel like you're at home eating dinner, even when it's daylight outside. Honestly I really wanted to try the food here it looks delicious and chicken salad sounded great. I am not familiar with this area so I called first to make sure which building it was since I couldn't see the sidewalk sign. She was a little bothered by my questions on the phone. When I entered the restaurant, it was slow so no one was waiting. I stepped to the register to order and the cashier was on her phone texting. She never looked up, never acknowledged me. I stood there for about five minutes and then just walked out. I called back and asked to talk to the manager and was told they weren't available and what could she help me with. Since she was the problem I didn't elaborate. I sent an email to them before posting a bad review but got no response. Love this restaurant! One of my daughters wanted a "grown up" luncheon. We visited this location for its historic location and the recommendations. It was just a bit confusing. Please keep in mind I have only been here post- covid, so it may have been different before. The only confusion is ordering. You walk in and order your meal initially, then you find a place to sit. Social distancing is enforced and there is hand sanitizer available. (Also, wearing a mask to walk inside is required.) The menu appears easy to understand but it's slightly confusing. The staff is professional and kind, we especially appreciated all the assistance they provided us. My daughter and I were very impressed! The food was delicious and the employees were exceptional.
