What a shame to have to give such a horrible review. My mom and I have eaten here on a few occasions and both the service and the food have been great. Today we took my sister for a late lunch. It took almost an hour for our food to come out. The broccoli cheese soup was cold and looked more like cheese soup there was no broccoli to be found. The French dip sandwiches were cold and my sister's sandwich had a broken up toothpick buried in the sliced meat. The staff were rude when we inquired about our order. Second time to review this restaurant - we went a couple days ago. The best thing I can say about it was there was ALOT of spinach on my MAX OUT turkey sandwich. The oven roasted turkey and slice of swiss was maybe 1/4 inch tall, topped by 3 inches of spinach. I understand their ordering system (pick up a menu and start to peruse it while the line behind you backs up, sometimes out the door) but I don't like it. I am from the area and this place was always my favorite! Today, I placed a to go order of a chicken salad sandwich, fruit salad and a cup of broccoli cheddar soup. This has always been my go to meal! I'm not sure if it was the fact that I ordered it to go, but the quality of food was awful. The fruit was slimy and looked like it was someone's left overs, the soup was in a container with 8/31 on it (my guess was there trying to get rid of it) which did not taste good when I heated it up and the sandwich was not good. Used to love this place. Food was great! But today I saw an employee yelling at a teen employee for who knows what. In front of the customers above all! Definitely not being professional at all! Seems like it's the same lady that takes people's order that is very rude! Well I could definitely see that! Instead of talking in a back room, she was yelling at the poor boy behind the door all the servers come from. So you were able to see everything any time the door was being swung open. The last time I went ... the Mike's plate (which is a bowl of soup, a sandwich and fruit - no drink) was $18.00... YES... I am serious!!! $18 bucks for the same plate that I use to get for $7.98. Well, I hate to say it, but as a LOCAL, I've been enjoying Sandy's since I was a little girl. The food is still good, prices have increased - but I guess prices have increased everywhere. The only reason I gave Sandy's TWO stars is because of service. I have always waited patiently in line during lunch - no problem. But dinner service? What service? We rarely eat out and view it as a treat, not this time. I was with a party of three, they asked us to chose a table and NEVER once came to check on us. No drink glasses, no bread rounds, nothing. After 15 minutes without even being acknowledged, we left. That was about 3 months ago and we have not returned. So sad :( I love Sandy's food but cannot return until I know service has improved. read more

We've passed this restaurant many times and tonight we thought we'd visit for dinner. My experience was amazingly underwhelming and what the establishment did real well was to make us seem invisible. Perhaps we were. We entered, attempted to walk to the counter to be seated where we simply were ignored as two young folks focused intently on helping another patron with his outgoing order. We made eye contact several times with the restaurant staffers, but we were still left standing. When a waitress entered the room and also glanced at us, we though we were on our way to a table. This apparently wasn't the case so we continued to stand there. I concluded that perhaps trying the venue wasn't in the cards so we simply left. The owner of this establishment certainly has training challenges to work through. read more

Visited last Saturday, January 3, 2015, 4:45 p.m. The food is good, although slightly over-priced. This was only my third visit since I only recently moved to Richmond in July. However, it will probably be my last as the service was so horrible. It started out okay, waitress took our food and drink order, brought our tea and water quickly. About 20 minutes later (one appetizer and one sandwich ordered) we received our food. That was the LAST time our waitress came by. Ever. We eventually ran out of both tea and water. After about 10 minutes of waiting, I had to go get to-go containers for us myself as I cannot eat without having something to drink. We waiting about 5 more minutes for the check. NOPE! As she stood at the bar drying glasses, in our direct line of sight, still not a word. I finally asked another server for our check. When he brought it I told him we had horrible service. His response was a blank stare. Yet again, we waited for someone to pick up the check with our credit card. And yet again we were completely ignored. We finally paid at the cashier. It was the worst service I have ever received, bar none! read more

Today i called in my order for a turkey sandwich. The gentleman that i spoke to told me that it would be 10-15 mins . so i leave my job 10 mins after i call it in and it takes me 5 mins to get there. I arrive and the girl tells me that there are 2 orders ahead of me so i wait. The food is terribly bland and their broccoli soup isn't creamy at all. I didn't see the point in paying $10+ for a sandwich or a burger when I can go home and make it better, or go to a drive-thru for a better burger and get it cheaper. Went there for lunch today. Husband and I each had the duet. Egg salad and tuna salad were ok; not spectacular. Broccoli cheese soup and crab and corn chowder were both excellent. Crunchy bread was good. Service was extremely slow. We waited almost 45 minutes for our meal. When we asked how much longer we would have to wait, one of the servers simply said "There are a lot of people here." He said it quite abruptly too, with no apology. Also, we were seated near the bar area, and we overheard a woman waiting at the bar say that she had been waiting over an hour for a to go order. That is almost unacceptable. I've been a Sandy McGee customer for years, well before the first colony location opened and closed. I loved the food and service but lately service and food have gone down, more so the service as it's clearly not the atmosphere I was first introduced to and fell in love with. Lately, the service has been horrible. I've experienced bad service from missing lunch meat in my sandwich to missing items from my to go order. Today I was charged extra because I wanted one extra bread sample which disturbed me since I've never been charged before and find it appalling as they use to give them away like chips at a Mexican restaurant. Their food is good but not good enough to tolerate the horrible service they provide. I'm never going back there again and will never recommend this place to friends and coworkers anymore as sandy mcgees no longer offers anything special that justifies their outrageous food prices. Added: after checking the broccoli cheese soup I just spent $8 on, I've come to realize it's really just cheese soup as there is no broccoli in it. *sigh* I predict sandy mcgees will be out of business within the next five years (max) read more

We had heard great things about this restaurant and I am sure they are true. All I can report on is our experience, probably not the norm, but here goes. We had called the day before to order their famous pecan pie and invited friends in to enjoy it with us. Well, the following day when they said it would be ready, we went to pick it up. We thought we should probably try their broccoli soup as well while we waited. After being seated and served, we got the bad news. They didn't have a pie for us and weren't sure what happened with our order. If we had known that, we wouldn't have order our light lunch (very light, I might add our cup of soup was less than a cup). We then had to stop at a grocery store on our way home so we would have pie for our guests! So, fair warning if you order a pie from them, don't expect to have it waiting for you when you go to pick it up. I thought it would have been nice if they had at least given us a discount on our light lunch. C'est la vie! read more

I call it a "lunch w/ the girls" restaurant, but the truth is my husband likes it as much as I do. Food is tasty and we notice a sincere effort to be creative w/ common dishes. Desserts are great. I love their blackberry tea. They offer catering service and it is equally good. One time they made a minor error on my order and a staffer came all the way back to my house to make it right. Yes at noontime they are extremely busy but they have been in business a long time and should be better at it. We were in line 7-8 minutes before a server told us there were two lines - one if you pay cash and the other for credit. There should be a sign right upfront to let you know that. Then we ordered and paid and were given a table number to go to -- but diners were already seated there. Found another server and were given another, less appealing table. (That narrow side room needs some decor on the walls and some charm!) The first server who gave us wrong table number had said she would bring us bread. After probably 10 minutes we asked another server for bread and she said sure ...bread never did come. Our food order took awhile but it was excellent when it came. They lost my business yesterday with bad food and bad customer service. I understand that once in a while the kitchen drops the ball, but in this case, management was ugly about it, and since this place wants top dollar for simple food, management needs to be on the job. Been here several times and the story is the same. There's only one person working to take orders, seat people and work the register which makes standing in line monotonous. Once seated on a rickety chair with a wobbly table, the food eventually arrives and it's good, but waitstaff seem to lurk at times despite being out of tea. We just moved to the Richmond area and had heard of this quaint place in downtown Richmond. I went once for lunch and had the broccoli cheese soup and quiche. It was just ok, soup was very watery - quiche kind of bland. The wait for the food seemed a bit long. But thought I'd give it another shot. Took my husband on a Saturday afternoon. He ordered soup,sandwich & a piece of pie. I ordered a shrimp poboy. We waited and we waited - watched parties that came in after us get their food, leave. I asked the young lady at the counter why it was taking so long and she said oh, you ordered off the grill that takes longer. Seriously to fry shrimp?! Once it came, it was very disappointing. Shrimp had a strange aftertaste - couldn't eat it. No apology or offer to reduce price! My husband never received his soup or pie which they did refund because we requested it. This place has so much potential, but food quality, service and lack of cleanliness are huge issues in my opinion. Too bad. read more
