We just went for desserts as we just had a sweet tooth. We got the carrot cake and the Mexican fudge cake. They were both absolutely delicious BUT you better bring a friend to help you eat your dessert because a slice of carrot cake is enough for 3 people! You definitely get your moneys worth! It was moist and delicious. The Mexican fudge cake is amazing. You'd think a fudge cake would be too rich but it isn't! The cake portion is mildly sweet whereas the fudge topping is where the sweetness comes from. It's the perfect balance! The restaurant it's self is in a cute and cozy location. Very nice vibe. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is that service was lacking. We came about an hour before closing and our waitress was pretty absent. Someone else had to inform her that our desserts were ready to be served. It took about 15 minutes from ordering to be served but that wasn't the biggest deal to us. The part that was a bit irritating was how long it took her to bring our check and then to come back to get our card. About 20-25 minutes. She went upstairs and we didn't see her again for a while. I had friends that were shocked that I had never been to Sandy McGee's despite living in the area. I have now been three times. I dream about the spinach salad. Best I have ever had. Each time I've been here, I have ordered the City Secretary plate. Last I checked, it was $16. Not cheap, but the portions are plentiful. I promise you won't leave hungry. I get the half sandwich (smoked turkey), spinach salad, and cup of soup. I've had the broccoli cheese, tortilla, and a chilled avocado soup. They were all good. I've seen the fruit that comes with some plates and was shocked how much gorgeous fresh fruit is on the plate. They serve it with a little poppy seed dressing on the side. The pimento cheese sampler is tasty. I found it to be pretty salty in combination with the addictive little toasted breads that they serve. They're also famous for their chicken salad. I tried some that a friend shared and it was pretty good! Now, I'm not a big craft cocktail girl. The first time I went, I bit the bullet and ordered the Boarding House. It killed me to pay like $12 for a drink that, when arrived, was really tiny. Again, I realize that's not an unusual price, but I rarely order drinks like this. It was beautiful! Had a dehydrated fruit slice (orange, I think) atop an egg white layer. It was SO good!! I sipped on it for almost the whole lunch with my friend. I ended up going to Spec's on the way home to get the items to make it myself. The next time I went to Sandy McGee's, I ordered it again. This time, it was served in a different style glass, didn't have the dehydrated orange? slice on top, and appeared to have less served than the first time I ordered it. Perhaps just the different style serving vessel, not sure. Still tasty, but I definitely enjoyed the first one much better. An almost $40 lunch for one (meal, one cocktail, plus tax and tips) is pretty pricey, in my opinion, but it's a treat. It's a really comfortable, quaint environment worth of a leisurely lunch with a friend. But don't sit too long! They end up with lines out the door so take your visit with your friend down the sidewalks of downtown Richmond into some of the really unique little shops. Oh, forgot to add that I went for a baby shower for a friend's daughter. That was done so well! I wouldn't have thought such a busy place would be conducive for a small party, but it still felt cozy. Service was impeccable. I don't know his name, but each time I've been there is an older gentlemen who is so gracious and kind. He even said a blessing before our meal at the shower which brought tears to my eyes. Well done, Sandy! Well done. read more

Sandy McGee's has hit it out of the park!! When I lived in the Richmond Area, Sandy's was my go-to lunch spot. They have the best Broccoli Cheese Soup and Chicken Salad!! I now live in the Dallas Area and I was able to have my mom bring my favorites all the way up here to Dallas for my baby shower. The ordering was easy and they packed everything so nicely for the 4 1/2 hour drive up here. I am so happy we were able to make it happen! I can't wait to come back and dine in soon!! read more

First off let me say I haven't been here in about 3 years. And I came back more than satisfied. It's so peaceful and beautiful inside this establishment! They now have a bar! I had an happy hour beer! My chicken came out amazing just like I remembered! The max out was beautiful but my husband couldn't have it. We didn't check all the ingredients! Taylor accommodated us so well! She was so amazing ! And the club was a better choice ! The food was literally like we hadn't left town! Would definitely be back! And I loved all the tap beers! Wow! What a hidden gem this place is! We had no idea it existed but decided to go since we were in the area. The layout is really cool in an old historic high ceilinged building. There's a decent sized bar and a variety of seating from deli style tables to bigger dinner type tables in the back. We had some mixed drinks that were fantastic (the Watertower and the Runaway Scrape). We had the tortilla soup (which was the best I've ever had) and quite a few different sandwiches. All five of the people in our party were very happy with everything. I think you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We'll definitely be back soon!!! read more

This place is incredible. Hands down the best broccoli cheese soup I have ever had! The service is top notch! My family and I visited from Oklahoma and were so happy we stopped in here. My wife doesn't even like coconut cream pie and she ate about half of my pie. I got the chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, and it was amazing! There's not many places like this around anymore. I have been going to this restaurant for more years than I can remember, and it has always been one of my favorites. Portions are generous (I often have leftovers which is rare for me), and I love the taste of the broccoli cheese soup. However, I've found myself eating there less and less. It has become terribly pricy, and the quality isn't quite as good as it once was. Not bad, but just not so amazing (as it once was). The broccoli cheese soup still tastes good, but is thinner in consistency and not always warm enough. The desserts remain huge and tasty. The service is hit or miss (in the past it was consistently good). Attempts over the years to modernize the decor took away the old school charm and made it rather sterile. I just want it to be more like it was in its prime. read more

I absolutely love this place. It is a family owned restaurant in historic downtown Richmond. Owned and operated by a mother and son (Sandy and Payton McGee). This place has some wonderful deli items with some comfort food. Some of my favorite items include the City Secretary (chicken salad), beef dip sub, and their specialty burgers. Any of these items can be served with fresh fruit and their famous broccoli and cheese soup! The bar has some wonderful specialty cocktails with my favorite being the barrel aged old fashion. Served with an ice ball, aged cherry and sun-dried orange slice. The cocktails are both creative and mixed to perfection. You can tell a lot of thought and hard work has gone into their menus and they execute them flawlessly. read more

We wanted to sit by the window and the lady walked over after we sat down and asked us to move so she could clean the windows to go home. I brought my daughter and grandson for lunch on Tuesday. It was great to see how busy it was which speaks to the quality of the restaurant and consistency of the food. I had the chicken salad and broccoli cheese soup again because they are just great! My daughter had the BLT and thought it was a little greasy but that might have been because of the amount of bacon on the sandwich! Very generous! My 7 year old grandson is a VERY picky eater and devoured the chicken fingers and onion rings! We even treated ourselves to the coconut cream and chocolate pie! Both pies were very fresh with a light, flaky crust. Couldn't eat it all but sure appreciated the leftovers later. I would just like to comment that I realize it is hard to find waitstaff these days so I understand the efficiency of ordering at a counter and having food brought to the table. I do however wonder if it is fair to ask the patron to give a 25% tip when the service is minimal. read more

This was my first visit to Sandy McGee's in the historic district on Morton Street. At prime time parking can be limited with street parking on Morton and on 5th Street along side of the building. If you're dining in (before 5:00) grab a menu by the door or at the counter and decide what you're having. After 5 p.m. they have table service. Once you've decided place your order at one of the two counters. Once you place your order they assign you a table number which are well marked. You grab your glass, filled with your silverware, from the counter and pour your beverage at the fountain area. The menu has Sandy's Legendary Combo deals with sandwiches, salad an soup combos ranging from $14 - $16.50. You'll find sandwiches from chicken, tuna and egg salad, po'boy, French dip, chicken, clubs crossiants to BLT's. Several Soups (Brocolli Cheese, Chicken Tortilla, Chilled Avocado, Crab & Corn Chowder) and Salads are available from fruit, garden, spinach and pasta side salads ($7.25 - $12) to entree salads (all $15). If you're looking for a heftier menu the Grill options has shrimp and chicken dinners, a large Sante Fe Spud, Hamburgers and Cajun Shrimp Po' Boys. They haven't forgotten those 12 and under and offer a children's menu. I ordered a bowl of the Crab & Corn Chowder ($1 more) as an appetizer. The chowder had a nice balance of ingredients in a slightly thick base. I enjoyed the chowder flavor but would have preferred they left off the thin strips of tortilla. They were distracting, IMHO, and not necessary. I ordered the whole French Dip (1/2 for dinner later) and a side of onion rings ($3 upcharge). Sandwiches are normally served with a bag of chips and pickle. The perfectly cooked medium rare sirloin roast is served on a large, soft but lightly toasted baguette with horseradish, a pickle and au jus for dipping. The meat was truly delicious, tender, a large portion, seasoned well and a perfect accompaniment with the lightly salty au jus. Ususally the au jus is to salty for dipping but this honestly was a perfect combo. One of the best I've had. The onion rings were prepared as I requested (lightly brown) and was a generous serving. The onions rings are smaller but had a very good flavor. My only complaint is all the food is delivered at one time. By the time I finished my soup my onion rings were cold and my sandwich was room temperature. I guess I just need to eat faster or come after 5 p.m. for table service. Everything was tasty, fast service, generous portions, prepared well and I do recommend you try the French Dip. read more

While service is often spotty, I love Sandy McGree's food. I went last night to pick up an order and the register wasn't being manned by a petulant and condescending late teen girl. The gentleman and woman who helped me were both fantastic and went out of their way to provide great service. Made it a great experience. In terms of food, get the same thing almost every time. Avacado BLT and Broccoli Cheese Soup. They are both fantastic. And we always get a large bag of the "crunchies". IE, the bread rounds. They are made with crack, I think. Deserts are wonderful as well. Especially the banana pudding. If you can overlook the usual service issues, the food is worth it. read more

Arrived at 1:15 and placed order. Food arrived at 2:30, after inquiring as to the hold up. They lost our order and the order of several other tables. The manager was unapologetic and rude. She was a tanned-skinned woman with naturally dark hair that was bleached blonde, and a slender build. She said she "would take care of us." We received no compensation for the wait and lost order. She walked around the restaurant reminding her staff loudly that, "I'm not giving out free deserts. Nope." The food was good, but the service will have me unable to return or recommend. The owner was nowhere to be found. Apparently she comes once a week. The business needs better oversight if the owner is going to be so absentee. 15% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. It was charged before sitting down and evaluating service. The only service provided is they bring your food out. Everything else you will do yourself. My favorites are the club croissant; buttery flakey croissant with turkey, bacon, swiss, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo with broccoli cheese soup (if you haven't tried this, you ain't livin'!) and their fruit salad. So let's talk about their fruit salad, a variety of fruit including but not limited to strawberries, bananas, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, and apples, paired with the most amazing poppy seed dressing I've ever had! It's sweet and salty and just straight up delicious! They have a variety of salads, sandwiches, soups, quiches, and hot plates made daily. I always leave happy and full!
