This was one of the worst experiences I've had at a nail salon. My manicure started peeling after just a few days, and one nail broke. I came back to have it fixed, and they actually charged me for the repair, even though the manicure had barely lasted. I don't blame the technicians--they did a good job. The problem seems to be the old or poor-quality nail polish that doesn't last. The receptionist, Sasha, also ignored the technician I booked online and assigned me to someone else without any explanation. This has happened more than once. Her customer service is rude, and appointments don't seem to matter. On top of that, they charged me an extra $2 for using a credit card without telling me beforehand, and they don't even accept Apple Pay. It's not about the $2--it's about being transparent with customers. We selected this spot because of their advertisements for nail art. We received our gel manicures in the main room, which is pretty basic. Clean. Brightly lit. Not posh, but utilitarian. The manicurists were thorough and took their time. So much so, it was probably the longest gel nail art appointment I've ever had and the most expensive. I went for the first time last Friday to Santa Monica Nails to remove an old gel set and get something for the Halloween season. This is only my second time getting gel so it's been a fun experience trying different styles / designs. I booked an appointment with Katherine as I saw she had good reviews and had time slots available. When I came in it wasn't very busy in the main room, but it sounded like there were some people in the other rooms getting pedicures I assume. Once Katherine came over, I showed her the design I was wanting and that I wanted to keep my nail shape the way they were since they were shaped at a previous gel appointment. The original inspo was more of a natural look with ghosts, but since my previous nails were an ombre French look, I decided I wanted a bolder color as the "background" to the ghosts. Katherine was very gentle and kind. I am usually a quiet person, but I debating on if I should chat with her. Eventually, I decided against it though since she seemed very focus on the nail designs and I didn't want to distract her. Plus I was getting pulled into the Love is Blind show on the TV. In the end, I was very happy with how my nails turned out. She had suggested glossy finish for the ghosts and matte on the background color. I wasn't 100% sure about this as I was so focused on the design in the inspo and just assumed the entire nail would be glossy, but I was willing to try and trust the process. Doing the contrast in finishes was actually a nice touch and helps the ghosts pop more. I also liked that she added mouths to the ghosts. In the inspo the ghosts only have eyes, but I liked that Katherine made the design her own and gave the ghosts more personality. read more

Amazing nail salon. I've been to other salons in Santa Monica, and they are nowhere near as cleanly, professional, or as good as this salon. I love doing the hard gel manicure. They last forever and they literally never chip. The nail techs here are always so gentle and thorough. They use clean materials and are so dedicated to make sure your nails come out well and that you like them. I had an OK experience here. I came in for a Russian mani and a pedicure and was greeted immediately at the door. The staff and service was OK though I felt like, at times, I was being talked about behind my back. I paid an exorbitant amount of money for a plain polish mani (over $100) and my nails came off pretty quickly after (within about a week and a half). Normally when I get hard gel-based nails, they last until I get my next mani with the only flaws being an occasional chip or a grown out past the cuticle bed. On top of that, I was pressured to leave a Google review, which I did for a free product, but I don't think it accurately represented my quality of service. That said, there were certain parts of the service, like cuticle maintenance, that were unparalleled compared to previous services I've had. read more

Rewind to a week ago when I had absolute awful experience at a place in DC and nails were popping off left and right. I was super sad, but knew I needed to get a new set pronto! Called Santa Monica nails at noon for a 6pm appointment after work and was immediately sent a text to confirm it. Totally great sign! Little touches like that make for a huge difference for a customer service stickler like myself. Walked in early and was immediately greeted by the incredibly friendly woman at the front who gave me a rundown of the shop, the colors, the process, and offered me a drink (of course I chose champagne - definitely needed after a long work day). My tech Jaleen was incredible! I explained why my 7 day old nails looked a mess and she cleaned them right up for me! Not only was she super empathetic to my situation, she swooped in and nailed (see what I did there) the final product. She was meticulous throughout and checked in with me multiple times to make sure I was happy (i totally was). She made me super at ease as we laughed, chit chatted, and shook our fists at the previous establishment that did me so dirty. BUT! If that didn't happen, i wouldn't have found this place. While I was up at the front submitting payment, they even gave me a great little gift of cuticle oil. Again, such a great little addition that made the entire experience wonderful. I am not really a nail woman or nail person. I go through phases of getting my nails done, but I typically find it hard to sit still and "relax" or "enjoy myself," because all I can think about is the million other things I need to be doing. Then, a friend recommended that I go see Oksana for a hard Russian gel manicure at Santa Monica Nails and I. Am. Hooked! Oksana is a true nail artist who stays up on trends and techniques. I've seen her the past three months in a row now, and I plan to continue. Oksana is super knowledgeable and opinionated about what will look good on me. Often, I've come in with inspo photos, and she's helped me figure out what will work from those photos and what we will need to improve upon based on my nail shape/ or skin tone etc. In addition to the impeccable quality, she's also super fun to hang out with. We transition pretty seamlessly in and out of talking and silence and it never feels awkward to me at all. Santa Monica nails feels really comfortable and like a family environment. I received a terrible manicure and pedicure here. For the manicure, they applied a gel color without even asking if I approved the shade. The French manicure was painted very poorly and uneven, so I asked them to remove the French tip and leave just the gel. They also over-polished my nails, and as a result one nail broke two days later and the gel began peeling off. The pedicure was just as bad. It took two hours--a complete waste of my time--and my toenail even broke afterward, which has never happened to me before. I posted a review explaining that I wasn't happy with the services and requested a refund. The salon then texted me offering a refund only if I agreed to remove my review. This is not how honest businesses should operate. Reviews exist to inform other consumers about the quality of service received. If everyone who had a bad experience was pressured to remove their negative review, the salon would appear to have perfect service--which is misleading and untrue. Probably the worst manicure experience I've ever had. I came in for a gel mani/pedi -- while my pedi was great, the manicure with Liana was painful and incredibly disappointing. The Russian(?) method used was extremely rough -- no water, just aggressive filing and cuticle pushing that felt like tiny stabs. I was visibly in pain and even said "ow" multiple times, only to be met with rude, passive-aggressive comments like, "Have you never gotten a mani before?" She burned me with the electric file, rushed the process (because her next client had arrived), filed my nails way too short, and ultimately cut my thumb badly -- it bled immediately and is still throbbing a day later. (Photo attached.) They gave me 20% off and the front desk was kind, but I still paid $150 to walk out injured. My friend paid over $200 for hers. I'm writing this because I was genuinely shocked at how careless and unprofessional this was. Proceed with caution if booking with Liana. read more

I went to five different salons today to try to just get my nail fixed because it was broken and there was a ridge in the middle of it. And everyone except Santa Monica nails, were rude to me and turned me away. Santa Monica nails took me in today right away, and they were super polite and friendly. It is a bit pricey, but worth it However, at the end of our services when I tipped every technician $10 and after two regular manicures and two gel pedicures, it was already 275. And then Mariana. Was extremely ungrateful and looked at me in the eyes and said is that it that's normal..... I was extremely offended. Despite the fact that they do a fabulous job they don't include color removal with their pedicures. And a $40 tip seems pretty generous and a little gratitude or thank you would've gone a long way. However, the owner Natalia and the other technicians were kind and very skilled at what they do. However, tips are not mandatory and I don't care if I left two dollars.
