My last meal in brooklyn. As soon as I stepped in, I immediately recognized the entrance. I haven't confirmed with them, but I am fairly certain that my friends grabbed a pizza from here one night and I walked in with them. I think it was just a cheeser pepperoni back then, but it was definitely good. Fast forward to now, before my train left, my sister want to bring me here for a meal and we dined in. Pizza was the move, and at first I was indecisive about which one I wanted. But then our waitress mentioned the special for the day and I got it. It had chilis, peppers, spring onions and much more... And with the flavor of that crust, anything could go on the pizza and taste great. The food? So good. The spaghetti special came with mussels in a white sauce that was straight-up divine--slurped it up happily. The corn cacio e pepe felt like Italian elote, really good - covered in parm. The salmon was also yummy but watch out for the hot cherry tomatoes (they may burn you when they pop). Ended the night with an affogato made with espresso ice cream. Should I have chosen vanilla ice cream? No, I have no regrets. Coffee on coffee on coffee. The service was good, nothing exceptional. They usually have some slow-braised meat and it's always delicious. Cocktails are also very well made, including spritzes and Negronis. The bartender made my partners mom a skinny cosmo because she's diabetic and she said it was the best cocktail she's ever had. Although I've only been here twice, years apart, I'm always thinking of it. It's cozy intimate space for single diners to small groups. I myself dined alone once, my favorite pastime. What made me love it was that they didn't rush me out. I can dine in for hours so that was a huge win for me. Any place that lets me take my time to pig out has a small piece of my loyalty:) On my most recent visit I finally convinced someone to try it out. Many people don't like eating by underpasses/trains/highways so spaces like these are hard to venture to. Even several years later the food was still amazing. That being said they have a pizza with onions on it, that one would be tasty if it had flavor (and some caramelized onions instead). Although the person that ordered it liked it they said they didn't love it and after three (small) slices they were over it. I have a feeling that someone here is in the Ops/Leo family, because there are some telltale signs: a cannellini bean appetizer, chili oil on the side, and a long list of natural wines on offer. But this may be my favorite of the trifecta. Not only did the unexpected location under the rattling of the J train please my sensibilities, but there were some true standout dishes. In particular, the aforementioned cannellini bean dish - here, mashed with lemon and garlic - was scrumptious in both flavor and texture. We went for their happy hour at 6pm on a Friday, and took advantage of their happy hour deal on draft beers and pizzas. The service was kind and helpful when answering questions about the wine options. Our group of 3 ordered an app, 2 pizzas and a pasta dish, and had a few slices left over. Food rundown: Whipped Ricotta - Our go-to appetizer. The bread, ricotta, olives and peppers combine for complex, delicious flavors. Spring Ortellana Pizza - I usually like meat on pizza, but this rich, savory pizza blew me away. Highly recommend. Santa Panza Pizza - meaty, smoky flavor. I recommend using the chili oil with this pizza. Cacio E Pepe Pasta - Just ok, won't get this again. AVOID this place like the plague! I was the BIGGEST fan of Santa Panza and gave them RAVE reviews. I also referred them to everyone I knew as the best vegan and gluten-free pizza in NYC. It was very pricey, but worth it. But the last two UberEats orders were horrible! The first one have so much sauce that the pizza was soggy. They made it right by sending me one later, so I trusted that I could try them again and that had just been one off day. So to celebrate New Years Day 2023, I ordered again. They sent over a vegan, Margarita pizza with like 50 cold cubes of nasty tasting, unmelted vegan cheese and no basil, despite me asking for EXTRA basil. It was like the pizza had never been put in the oven!! When I opened the box, I called the delivery guy because I thought he left me with the wrong order! When I called to have the situation rectified the person that answered the phone was rude and obnoxious. He claimed I "just don't like their pizza" despite me telling them how much I loved it numerous times in the past! I even called them previously after my order arrived to rave about how yummy it was. Plus, who orders from restaurants that they don't like?? When the rude moron on the phone claimed I "just didn't like their pizza", I told him this was far from true and that previously I had raved about them and they were losing a really great, regular customer. He claimed there was nothing he could do. They ruined my New Year's Day lunch with my favorite food. Santa Panza is one of my favorite places in Bushwick. Everything on the menu is a hit. My go tos are the Salame Piccante pizza, Pomodoro, and Cozze e Vongole. They currently have a seasonal Rainbow Trout on the menu that is to die for. They only make about 4-5 a day so catch it while you can! My favorite cocktails are the Espresso Martini (chef's kiss), Margarita, and White Negroni. The staff is always super friendly, attentive, and actually have real opinions and can offer great guidance on the food. After looking at the reviews/photos I was excited to try their margherita pizza. First, it is clear the ingredients used are high quality, and the flavor of the sauce is excellent. The crust's edges were chewy and well cooked! But ultimately, the pizza I received was also drenched in sauce, the cheese pieces unmelted, and from the excess sauce, the slices were wet and floppy on the bottom. I'm giving four stars still because I can tell from the quality of ingredients as well as prior reviews, this seems a one off experience. Where else will you find a bunch of folks on couches surrounding a bonfire in front of a refined Italian restaurant? Maybe Naples? Possibly Portland but I haven't been there yet. Outstanding food and stellar service. I started with a glass of Nebbiolo while my wife asked for a custom cocktail. The cocktail didn't come out as she had hoped. She didn't complain but the staff followed up a few times to ask what she thought. She admitted that it wasn't what she was hoping for so the bartender remade the cocktail and it came out great the second time around. I really appreciated their accommodating and attentive service. The staff genuinely care about your experience and it shows in the food too. For appetizers, we shared the burrata and the wood fired prawns. The burrata dish was most favorite dish of the night and my favorite preparation of burrata that I've had. It was platted with some fruit, roasted onions, and generously salted and peppered. I'd highly recommend it. The prawns were super too. They were cooked perfectly and retained a ton of flavor in the heads. The prawns were smothered in what they called a salsa verde but I'd consider a oily pesto. Whatever you call it, it was delicious and we ordered me bread to wipe it up with. For our main course, we shared reginetti pasta and the queen mary pizza. Personally, I didn't like the reginetti as there was a lot of shredded aged cheese. It came off to poignant for me, but I'm confident the dish will be a delight for anyone who like cacio e pepe. The pizza was superb. The dough was classic Neapolitan style. Quite airy bubbly on the outside. There was a nice char but it wasn't crispy. Actually a bit flimsy in the center which leads to the classic Neapolitan flop when you pick up a slice. It word certainly rival any pizzeria in Naples and was among the best that I've had in Brooklyn. To finish up, we had the chocolate salame for dessert. It featured a few slices of salted cookies with whipped cream. A creative and perfectly sweet dish to finish off an outstanding meal. I paired it with a glass of their house made limoncello which was excellent. It was better than any limoncello that I could remember having on the Amalfi Coast.
