It's not too often my wife and I are split on how we'd rate a restaurant. I give it a three because the decorations are a little too simple and the food just mediocre. DC is filled with GREAT food now, which raises the bar high. Scarlet Oak is good, but doesn't meet the high bar. My fried chicken benedict was good looking, but just not salted properly or have much of any flavor. However, my wife is on the search for DC's best French Toast and swears Scarlet Oak has it. Great place for brunch! The waffles with maduros and Nutella were delicious. Only criticism was the home fries, asked for them to be well done and crispy, but they were not. The atmosphere in this place is relaxed yet trendy and slightly upscale. The staff was super friendly and each table had a good amount of space apart. I really liked the prices and portion of food for the price. I got the butternut squash soup and crispy brussel sprouts. The soup was very flavorful and hearty, the portion size was large too. My favorite were the brussel sprouts because they were firm, yet tender and fresh. It came with a garlic aioli sauce and it gave the dish a perfect savory garlic taste. There were some crispy pieces which made the dish even better. Next time I am going to try the Fried chicken or go to the brunch. My friends mention the brunch quite often. They also had a huge wine, beer, and spirits selection. So not shortage of variety here. The menu had so many dishes to choose from which works well for picky eaters. read more

I had brunch at Scarlet Oak with two of my friends on a Saturday in September. Getting there: I drove, and there is a lot of street parking in that area, but it is paid street parking and it's expensive (likely because it's near Nats Park, and all of the newer development in that area), so if I were to go back I would take metro. It's a pretty short walk from the Navy Yard Station. Food/Drinks: I had the chicken and waffles. The waffles were good, the chicken was uninspiring. They were served with fruit though which was nice and fresh. One of my friends had the Scarlet Omelette which was actually pretty good (she let me try it...you know, for review purposes). It has lots of things in it, but they all seem to compliment each other. It also was well constructed. It wasn't falling apart/the toppings weren't falling out everywhere. The home fries that came with it were very good as well. Service: the hostess was really pleasant and friendly. Friendlier than our waitress, in fact. Our waitress was efficient though. Took orders pretty quickly, got our food out pretty quickly. Overall a decent experience in what has become one of my favorite parts of the city. Also I really like the decor...they really weave the "Scarlet Oak" theme into as much as they can. 3.75 that I don't mind rounding up to four stars. read more

Fantastic brunch spot with outdoor seating for a nice Saturday afternoon! Having just flown in from Chicago for the nearby Sakura Matsuri, we decided to meet here before heading over. The restaurant felt very upscale indoors, with a nice bar laid out and TV screens to watch some games. I opted to sit outside given how nice the day was, and other parties felt the same! During brunch, they have a dedicated menu of $10 - $18 entrees with an option for bottomless mimosas. My friends were running late, so I asked if I would be able to start on that for myself. My waitress was hesitant at first, and I assumed it was because they preferred if the entire party participate. Fortunately, the manager allowed my sad self to knock back my mimosas for $13 going solo, until my friends arrived and one joined in. Cheers! Unfortunately, three of us wanted to order the Crab Benedict, but they were apparently out for an hour. I settled instead for some pork belly sliders that came with a fried potato pancake. The sliders were small but tasty, with the pork belly being very tender and flavorful. A few more mimosas later and I was a happy camper. The servers proceeded to come to the table every 2 minutes to pressure us into ordering even though we were trying to catch up. Scarlet Oak was okay. Or should I say...oaky? That's right, ladies and gentlemen, this review is going to be chock full of tree puns. We made reservations through OpenTable for dinner on a Sunday night. It was pretty quiet, only a handful of others tables. It's a fine location. I don't mean to bark up the wrong tree (pun count: 2), but the decor is a little confusing. It's a little bit of everything. They should ditch the fake plants on the tables and pick a color scheme. The space itself is really nice, and with a few changes they could turn this into a really aesthetically pleasing and less confusing space. I decided to branch out (the puns don't stop!) and order the gnocchi. It was waaaay undercooked. Very chewy and starchy, and not enough ricotta or seasoning to make it a very memorable dish. If you order this dish, you'll get about five little tiny scampi shrimps with it, so savor them while you can. The gnocchi to shrimp ratio is very off, but it's not a huge bummer given the lack of freshness of the shrimp. It wasn't bad enough to make me want to leaf (somebody, please, cancel my yelp account), but it just wasn't great. This is not a bad spot. It's not a great spot either. It's just...a spot. Disclaimer: I wrote this review last year and neglected to post it, so the info might not be current. Nevertheless, everything was top notch, and I bet that hasn't changed! So, Scarlet Oak is a couple blocks away from Yards Park and the main stretch of Nats Park pregame spots, so you would be forgiven for missing it, but it is a great addition to the neighborhood that should not be overlooked. The space is beautiful, clean, with dark gray features keeping the mood calm and subdued. We stopped in just to grab a quick drink before meeting elsewhere. Once we saw the menu though, the stomachs started purring with anticipation. They had to be fed. The menu boasts decent sized side plates of cauliflower and brussels sprouts for just $5, and that's no happy hour price, that's all day baby. Both were phenomenal. These are in the top three best brussels I have had, perfectly crispy with none of the unpleasant bitterness. Slow clap to the chef. Bonus points for one of the best drink specials I have seen: the $9 triple play, which I prefer to call the dickel pickle. You get a can of PBR, a shot of dickel rye, and a shot of pickle juice. Picklebacks are so much better with rye instead of irish whisky. Tasty mix. read more

We settled in on the suggestion of our hotel staff for lunch after checking into hotel. Long ride into DC for an overnight. Needed to decompress and gear up for afternoon of sights and that we did. Having lived just a block away, I've frequented Scarlett Oak on a variety of occasions and am never disappointed. You can't beat their $5 personal pizzas on happy hour, paired with a glass of wine on the patio makes for a great evening. The pizzas are delicious, the crust is thin and crispy, but lightly soft in the middle, reminiscent of a Neapolitan style crust. Their brunch menu is full of southern comfort. The fried chicken Benedict is a fun twist on a classic, and the breakfast pizza comes topped with an oozing over easy egg. We had a brunch hosted at Scarlet Oak for our holiday party with about 40 people, and it was incredible. We have these brunches every year and this has been the best one, yet! We contacted the restaurant early to set things up. We worked with the manager Brian to get everything planned. They were extremely accommodating in setup and organization ahead of time. We had a menu provided to us and got all the details squared away: how long we could stay, what we could order, what was drink service going to look like, could we also order from the regular brunch menu (not just our limited menu). Setup was as easy as you could hope for. We still got there half an hour early just to make sure things went off without a hitch. We didn't need to get there early, it was super easy and everything was already ready for us. Drinks were ready to go as soon as we were seated. And this is worthy of note: the drinks were NEVER empty, ever. We hardly had to request anything. They were 100% on top of things the whole time. Even with the food, we had like 8 different options to choose from and they got all of them prepared and out to us in short order, no mistakes, no drama. It was just so easy! For food, we got fruit and hash browned potatoes delivered to the tables immediately. We also ordered a bunch of pizzas and brussel sprouts. The drinks available with our menu were bloody mary, mimosa, juices, coffee and tea, and of course water. From the 8 or so items we had to choose from as our main course, I got fried chicken eggs benedict and it was really delicious with tons of flavor, large fried chicken steaks, and excellent poached eggs. I was wow'd. We had our run of about half the restaurant and it was incredible, and it felt private even though other patrons passed by to the restroom. The butter sauce didn't have the nutty flavor needed to bring out the sage. The gnocchi was dense, and not light and fluffy as you would expect. They were skimpy on the shrimp, only five pieces. I'm surprised with the ratings because my boyfriend and I had a very good experience with the customer service, food, and cocktails. I'll definitely have to come back and try more. As an appetizer, we got the pork chop small plate to share (sorry for the lack of photo!) and they were mini but so well seasoned and delicious. For dinner I got the Fried Chicken with Brussel Sprouts and Mashed Potatoes. I definitely ate half and saved the rest. The fried chicken was perfectly crisp and I really liked how they prepared the brussel sprouts -- it tasted like they added some of the breading from the fried chicken to it. The mashed potatoes came with a gravy that seemed fatty which means more taste :) My boyfriend got the Salmon with Ratatouille and Bamboo Rice. The salmon had a thin layer of crunch which added a nice texture since the rice and ratatouille were soft. Everything worked really well together -- needless to say my boyfriend finished his dinner. We got the Chocolate Molten Cake which comes with Vanilla Gelato. I wish there was more molten chocolate in the middle. Overall we had a great experience. I went to this restaurant with a friend of mine last Friday evening and I had the worst experience. The service was horrendous and the food was disgusting. We only had a few bite and decided to leave. We walked by the water and we got lucky that we were able to get a table at Chloe. We hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner at Scarlet Oak on a Friday in the fall, for about 30 people. Brian reserved the entire outdoor patio for our party and arranged the tables, place cards and menus according to a seating arrangement we provided the day of the event. The space was perfect for that size event and probably could have comfortably held another 10-20 people with room to mingle and stand. The food was delicious and we worked out the menu a month or so before. Brian provided us a bunch of options and worked with us when we wanted to explore another fish option. We had a buffet style meal for dinner and plated appetizers that the adults and the children absolutely loved. The burrata salad, bucatini, salmon and fried chicken were the stars of the show! The service was attentive, the space perfect, our pace unrushed, and the food delicious--what more could you ask for! read more
