We've been to the Carson City location several times but this was our first time visiting this location in Minden. It's next to (and shares restrooms with) the COD casino in a historic district. There's not tons of parking but we had no problem getting a spot out front. For some reason hot sandwiches were not available during our visit, though burgers were. My husband had a decadent burger and I had a build your own sandwich on their yummy fresh sourdough bread. We both ate too many toffee candies. I really liked the dark chocolate one. The place is really clean and comfortable and the service friendly. We will definitely be back if we are in the area. read more

As I've said before, the Schat family and their bakeries are sort of an institution in the Eastern Sierra. Head down along the 395 corridor, and you are sure to hear about these places as great stopping points in Bishop, Mammoth, Carson, and now Minden. So when I finally swung down to the Carson Valley again, I just had to stop in and try out their newest location. Located right in the old downtown section of town, the building has been updated very well, and is a real lovely restaurant space. One side is totally festooned with cases, shelves, and tables loaded with baked goods and assorted other treats like candies and preserves. So you can either grab a loaf of bread or a box of pastries to go, and snag a snack and take a seat to enjoy in-house. This trip I sprung to have a bit of a sit down brunch and grab some stuff for later. Their Apple-Bran Muffin was excellent, and the biscotti with orange peel in it was nothing short of phenomenal. Plus, I can say the Ham and Cheese Croissant is as good as ever. Plus, their "Sourdou" bread was fantastic, and makes great sandwiches or spinach-dip fodder. In addition to their baked goods, the menu has a full range of breakfast and lunch plates. Breakfast burritos, of course, but also sandwiches, soups and sides. The few drawbacks are that they seem to stop serving sandwiches mid-afternoon. There is also parking limited just to street spaces, but on any given day this is likely not a problem. Service here was exceptional. Very fast and friendly. Prices are also pretty reasonable for the great quality you get. As a fan of all the other locations, I will certainly make it a point to stop off here again, when next I'm in the area. read more

Schat's Bakery is off the main drag down Minden and situated on the historic looking Esmeralda avenue, which is cluttered with old buildings in various levels of renovation. In contrast with many dirty, unkept Midwestern historical towns, this section of historical Minden looks clean and fresh. Our first time at Schat's, we ordered a couple sandwiches and at them outside on one of the benches down the block. It was the perfect spot for lunch. The sandwiches tasted fresh and were delicious. The bakery is separated into two sections: a bakery, overflowing with breads, chocolates, and brittles; and a restaurant section for anyone interested in eating a fresh sandwich or bowl of soup. One surprising element was the number of different brittles available. There was peanut brittle, almond brittle, mixed nut brittle. I'm sure there were many more, but I can't remember all of them. There was also a huge selection of breads, both savory and sweet. I was particularly interested in the multigrain/high nutrient breads. I've attempted making high nutrient bread in the past by stuffing it with as many grains, seeds, and nuts as possible with mixed results. Thankfully, Schat's has taken on the challenge. Since food handling is our current watch-word, we give kudos here for the practicality of the pastry papers that keep fingers off foods going to customers. Since the protective sheets are not reused between customers, nothing unwanted is transferred person to person. Now to the Joy's of flaky, croissant dough baked lovingly around tasty ham and cheese, scattered outside with more cheese, baked brown and bubbly over spicy jalapeno. This is thoroughly what a western breakfast should be: portable, satisfying, and a joy to eat. That alone would make this four-star. The fifth star is the unexpectedly amazing cannoli . They're not traditional, mind you. The standard pizelle is absent, replaced by the ultra-delicate florentine lace cookie, a brilliant choice because it adds crispy crunch and a lot of flavor, but I imagine it also makes the little cannoli tube even more difficult to roll perfectly. Inside was the lightest, fluffiest pastry creme ever, and both ends were capped in chocolate to keep the luscious creme from escaping. Full disclosure, we liked the cannoli at Schat's better than any we had in Rome. It's probably a good thing for our waistlines that Schat's is close to 1000 miles from home, but we'll be dreaming of the Cannoli the whole way. read more

We stopped by on a Sunday and got a few things to try, we got a ham bagel, apple turnover, and a blueberry cream cheese danish, we also purchased a few coffees and tried the Chai which was recommended in a lot of reviews The sandwich was pretty good they seasoned their eggs which gives it more flavor, the apple turnover was okay, and the danish was pretty okay but better than a starbucks danish. The chai was not worth the hype but it's not bad i've just had better! The lady at the front counter who greeted us when we walked in and was helping us choose our behind the counter items was rude or maybe grumpy not entirely sure ‍ but definitely not friendly at all. Tiny turkey sandwich-thin and dry as a bone. Didn't have any mayo or spread to even help with that, fries were also noticeably older. Had an eclair one day and tiramisu another that both fell short. For what you pay, you expect a little more. Not only that, seeing repeated critical violations with the health department makes you second guess anything at all. I loved this place as a bakery but I am exceedingly disappointed in their food. Not sure I will be back or recommend it to anyone else again. read more

Holy Schat! This place is really good! It's 50% bakery 50% deli and 100% worth your time and attention.. unlike that guy/girl that never texts you back hahah. As soon you walk in you get strong New York vibes. The decor inside reminds me of a corner deli in Manhattan. They've got Frank Sinatra playing on speakers. It's comfy in there. They have outdoor seating too but it can get really windy in town and the cotton trees nearby will ruin your lunch so I would recommend eating indoors. I ordered a sandwich and some goodies from the bakery area. Anytime I see a Cubano sandwich I pretty much always have to get it. It's like a rule for me. And this place did it soo well! The ratio of bread and what they inside was perfect. Came with fries too and that classic pickle on the side. If they put a pickle on the side you know you're about to eat a bomb af sandwich haha. The dessert area kinda reminded me of Porto's for all my So Cal Yelpers. Such a big variety of option. I opted for a cream puff and a frosted cookie. The cream puff was fantastic! The cookie was.. a cookie but it looked pretty. They also do a big variety of daily fresh baked breads. If I lived local I would for sure go for a sourdough loaf. Sandwiches are between $9 - $12 Ok so Cubano, a dessert of your choice and take the window view and you've got a great lunch option! They have 2 other locations around the area and apparently they all look different inside so there's a reason to check those out. When back around this way I'll definitely come back! read more

Living here over 20 years and having lived in Bishop, California, I'm familiar with Schat's bakery. First time at the Minden bakery for breakfast about a month ago we had avocado toast with eggs, breakfast burrito and took home cinnamon rolls. All were outstanding. Returned today and got takeout. I got the breakfast bowl with bacon. Partner got the jalapeño ham and cheese croissant. Again, excellent!! Love the way the restaurant and bakery is set up and decorated. Gayle and I have moved to Genoa and left the Bay Area behind, with few regrets as we enter retirement. One of these regrets is my favourite corn cherry scone from Berkeley's Cheeseboard or the Arizmendi Bakery in Emeryville or Oakland. The baked goods choices in greater Carson City are somewhat limited, yet pretty good. That includes (so far) the LA Bakery in Carson City and the Schat's in either Carson City or their new one in Minden. As we've always thought Downtown Minden was rather attractive, we were pleased with the recent opening of their Schat's Bakery. It's on the way back from any Gardnerville errands and conveniently located. However, during these COVID-19 times, Gayle and I have opted not to dine indoors and are happy to stick to takeout. Hence, the sit-down restaurant part of this fine establishment will have to wait a little bit longer. Our favorite take-out choices are the sliced breads, coffee cake, and scones (of various flavors). It's a bit less crowded (at least when we've been there and better spaced) than their Carson City outpost, and we were happy to see good safety practices in place and friendly folks who are working hard under challenging circumstances. Hence, even counter service deserves a nice tip. read more

My friend who is based in Carson City said, I have to take you to Schat's. Their pastries are life-changing. I've had some pretty darn good pastries in my time, and I thought, she's exaggerating, but hey, I'lm willing to try. I won't claim Schat's pastries and sandwich changed my life, but they sure made my life better for a couple days. There's a bakery side, with long cases of beautifu baked goods, baskets of bread, and a restaurant side. We got croissants for the next day's breakfast, plus a few cookies, and ordered sandwiches to eat in. I'm vegan, and luckily, with a little creativity, there threw together a sandwich for me. And boy, it was really good. Friend had a turkey sandwich -- pretty standard, but she said all the veggies were fresh, and the turkey was perfect. We shared a basket of french fries, which I tried really hard to resist, but the expression of bliss on her face, and the aroma wafting across the table, drew me in. I found myself uncontrollably reaching across the table for those bad boys. Holy smokes, were they good. Not greasy. Hot. Just the right amount of bite. Even though we both proclaimed we were full, we broke into the bag of chocolate chip cookies. Just the right amount of sweetness and crunch. Not too soft, but with just the right amount of bite resistance. We rolled out of Schat's, clutching the bag of croissants as if it was a bag of cash we'd won in the casino next door. The following morning, we heated up the croissants very slightly in the oven, just enough to get them warm through and through. Normally I wouldn't eat croissants as, being a vegan, I don't eat butter. But how could I be so rude as to turn down this treat that my friend says she bought just for my visit? (Yeah, right.) Again -- really good, and surprisingly filling. Schat's is definitely worth the trip. Not all the way from Chicago, but definitely from Carson City and other Nevada cities. Had a chance to stop by for a sandwich and chocolate walnut chews that a local friend bought. He also recommended the the chili cheese bread. Right when you walk in the smells of carmelized sugars hit your nose and the fragrance of fresh baked goods. We ordered a Reuben and Cubano sandwiches, they came with fries and were delicious. I am from LA and am pleasantly surprised with the great food out here. But I don't have to tell the locals that. read more

Such a disappointment. The cook was cursing, the little helper running around was cursing and talking in a bad tone to guests, the food tasted old, soup was very salty. We didn't even finish our lunches, been here a few times and the only consistent thing is that no one prepares food with gloves, the soups are still salty, and the quality is worse than a dennys. Horrible service today. The girl helping me didn't use gloves when getting the cookies & Brownies I ordered. Then she took my money without cleaning her hands afterward and helping the next customer! I asked for a box so that the cookies & brownies would be neat & protected. She threw all the cookies haphazardly in the box. The server was not paying attention to me, kept saying she couldn't hear me & when I got home I was missing 8 cookies that I ordered & one brownie. I have tried giving this place several tries with the same type of poor service. What about COVID Precautions? Today was the 4th try. I will not be returning. What a perfect place. The senses are overwhelmed with the sights, sounds and (most importantly) SMELLS of the magnificent selection of breads, desserts, coffees, etc. We tried the sandwiches and burgers which were delicious. Always a great stop to and from Reno to CA. Great bear claws and other pastry's. Bread is fresh and wholesome.
