Thanks to some lovely friends for getting this for us to try for my birthday! Each dessert looked so impeccable and the taste was so refreshing. The berry cake, mocha cake and fruit tarts were the perfect textures with the flavor jumping out on my palate and the tart had the best crisp. I feel the part of my identity that is not a cake / sweets person is being worn down from all these well made treats!
Excellent Princess cake as always. An early Mother's Day treat. The taste and decorations are always consistent and reliable and beautifully presented. An 8" princess cake costs around $70. Definitely a must try if you love marzipan, jam and fresh cream. My favorite celebration cake.
My family and I have been going here for a couple of years now and have loved every cake we have gotten. I remember trying the mango cheesecake as well. It wasn't too sweet and the cheesecake didn't feel too heavy like other cheesecakes do- this goes for the strawberry cheesecake as well. I would say that the strawberry tastes better than the mango because the mango was a bit sour. The tiramisu mousse cake is a family favorite and we have gotten it a few times now. It's perfectly balanced and not too sweet (which is very important lol). The workers are super kind and when I went to pick up a cake once, the lady gave me a couple free cream puffs. There is no seating so this is definitely the place where you get your sweet treat and go somewhere else. Note that parking can be a bit hard to find. You can also place your orders online or make a call.

The cakes are pretty good, but we had such an unpleasant experience with the girl that helped us. We came in and waited in line. Got called up. She asked us what we wanted and when we said one thing she kept rudely saying what else before we even had a chance to tell her what else. They had 50% off cakes and then we asked her the flavors. Then we asked how much they would be and she said look at the board, 50% off that. I think her coworker realized how rude she was being and intervened and let us know the price. We asked her what cake this particular one since it didn't have a label was and she goes same as the one on the bottom, read the label. She spent more effort saying that rather than just stating the name of the cake. We got ended up getting three cakes, the strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse and princess cake. I would skip the princess cake here and head to ambrosia. Theirs are 10x better.
Selection at the beginning of the day was excellent and selection plentiful Service is super friendly The shop was very clean. Strawberry cake was amazing. Birthday special !
Grabbed a slice of their two most popular items: Princess cake: Nice, smooth flavors with a nice almond essence from the marzipan. I can see why this is so popular. Strawberry short cake: Solid cake that reminds me of the WF Strawberry chiffon cake. Overall, would recommend the Princess cake if you want a unique experience, but a slice is a bit pricey ($7)
I have ordered from here many times over the years including my wedding cake back about 11 years ago. So I figure its time for a review! The cake that I recently got was good tasting but it really made my stomach hurt every time I ate it. We did finish it but something was a bit off. It was smaller then I remember it being and there may have been a layer of cake missing in the middle. I think I remember the cakes being 3 layers of cake with creme or filling in between??? It was advertised as having strawberry filling which it did not have. The cake we ordered this time was chocolate with strawberry's & whipping cream frosting. There was very little strawberry like maybe 10 -15 slices on top and not inside the filling or any other part of the cake so it lacked balance and acidity to break up the rich cream inside. The cake is flavorful & creative but I just have those few issues that I wanted to bring up.
I've been to Schubert's a few times, and I'm incredibly disappointed. Schubert's is located in inner Richmond in the San Francisco area, and initially was highly recommended as one of the better bakeries to go to for special occasion cakes. A cake can really make or break that special occasion, and they succeeded in ruining one. I had ordered over the phone, and ordered based on what sounded good, and what was suggested. The cakes are very pricey, and frankly overpriced. What may have been wonderful in years past, hasn't been my experience. The store staff is off putting, unwelcoming, and I dare say rude. I picked up my order ( mango mousse) for a birthday celebration. I had requested candles in a certain color, and was presented candles in silver. " That's all we have" it would have been proper to let me know upfront when I placed the order, and was told " no problem". The cake was horrible. All of it. The mango flavor tasted like tin/metal. The actual cake was dry and tasted like freezer burn. It was inedible. It was also $75.00. There MUST be better bakeries that offer delicious birthday cakes in the San Francisco area. This isn't one of them.
Wonderful bakery! I've always gone in the morning- it's quiet, the staff are super helpful, and there's rarely a crowd. Cakes are abundantly decorated and beautiful, including the packaging. The strawberry shortcake is chock full of fresh strawberries and in lieu of frosting is layered with light whipped cream. Not too sweet and super moist . And unheard of post covid prices for the size of an 8" whole cake at $40!
Ordered for pick up 24 hour before. I opted for the 6 in Swedish princess cake but with ivory marzipan. The person taking my order over the phone made sure the spelling of the words and names were all correct. Pick up process was easy - walked up to the register and told them my name. This bakery does have several spots for seating. They have a little sample tray in front as well. I noticed adding lettering was an extra $2 if you do it there but it wasnt charged for mine so seems like ordering in advance is the way to go! There were still plenty of variety and sizes of cake available on display when I got there at 3pm so I would think it's possible to do last min cake pick up too Cake was nicely decorated and tasted soft and fluffy inside. Only the outside marzipan layer was sweet. Price for the princess cake here is $2-$3 more than other places in SF but considering you can opt for another color here other than green is worth it to me!
4/5: Princess cake is good but a little too sweet. $7 for a small slice. 3 layers of raspberry with good fondant.
It was a rainy Monday when I was walking along Clement Street and noticed Schubert's was open. The glass cases were mostly empty, but I saw a sign for 30% off all whole cakes and slices. There was also a small sign indicating they were day-old cakes, and the cashier mentioned they're open until 2:30 PM on Mondays (they're usually closed Mondays and Tuesdays). I didn't feel like getting a cake, so I went with a Hazelnut Nutmeg Cookie ($1.10) and a Black & White Shortbread ($1.10). Both were very good and not stale, even when I ate them the next day. I especially liked the Black & White Shortbread. I would come back on a Monday--maybe next time I'll try one of the cakes at 30% off.

My family has been coming to Schubert's for decades. We usually get cakes for birthdays/holidays but I used to get their cookies and hot cross buns as an after school snack as well. We usually order their mousse or whipped cream cakes but you can't go wrong with any of them. I placed an order online last month for two 6" cakes for my storybook themed baby shower. We had the Swedish Princess Cake (my favorite since I was a kid and no place has ever topped theirs) and the Black Currant Mousse. It was the right amount for under fifteen people. I look forward to enjoying more of their delicious cakes for future celebrations. read more

I was looking forward to visiting this famous bakery in Richmond, the number of positive reviews for Shubert is really impressive. But unfortunately, after trying their pastries, I was rather disappointed. Being a European myself, I have tried many traditional cakes and pastries in different countries, which gives me an understanding of the balance of their tastes and textures. From what I tried, the black currant mousse cake only looked good, but the biscuit and mousse (not even similar to black currant) were separate components that did not interact with each other. Custard cake with cream was just sweet and very fatty, I think it would not hurt a little vanilla and some sour note. Also, this bakery lacks coffee and a place to sit and taste their goods, fully grab and go spot. Overall it's unlikely I'll give this place another try. read more

The good: There are so many good bakeries in SF and this is no exception. This is a small and quaint bakery that has been around for over a century. I tried the opera cake, pear tart, fuerst pueckler cake, and the black forest. Everything was great. I love the European cake flavors and options and how everything looks naturally colored. The service here is very quick. I like that you can order cake by the slice or get an entire cake. They're nicely decorated and their selection will make you want to try everything. They have 8 cake choices for the chocolate cake category alone. Then they have mousse cakes, berry cakes, shortcakes, cheesecakes, and much more. I'll have to try their Napoleon and Swedish Princess cake (one of their most popular menu items) next time. You can order cakes as small as 6". The bad: There's no indoor or outdoor seating areas for you to enjoy your pastries. Instead, I went to a nearby cafe to order coffee and to use their outdoor dining space so I could enjoy my pastries ASAP. A small 6" cake can cost around $35. The interesting: You can order ahead for pickup online. read more

Desserts: Swedish Princess - 5/5 - One of the best renditions in the bay area. The cake is super tasty and the cake is nice and tender. If you like sponge and marzipan...this is your cake. Chocolate Mousse Ganache - 5/5 - A very thick, rich, and heavy cake. You won't be able to eat this in one sitting. If you are a fan of chocolate...this will be a good option for you. I needed a birthday cake for my son and Yelp didn't steer me wrong. Schubert's Bakery really is THE PLACE for a cake. We got there around 3 pm on a Saturday and the place still had a line outside. When I got inside, there were only four cakes left - and lucky for me Strawberry Shortcake was one of them. My son and my whole family loved it. The strawberry shortcake was so light, airy and perfect. Beautiful fresh strawberries inside - and topped with a whipped cream frosting. It was so beautifully decorated and is easily my most favorite strawberry shortcake cake I've ever had. Thank you, Schubert's, for fulfilling every expectation that I had! Tiramisu was very rich in flavor! Thick dough compared to the fluffy, moist texture of cake. Lady fingers complimented the overall cake! Luckily I preordered! It was Mother's Day and the line was surely long if your didn't preorder. Classic cake shop in San Francisco! read more

It was the boys birthday so wanted to pick up a cake. While in the city, decided to swing by this place after all the great reviews we saw. This is near the Chinatown part of SF I believe and once we got there we luckily found some parking close by even though there was an event going on. We got into line and within like 10-15 minutes we were in front and we ordered: *Mango mousse cake: I loved this cake - we got a 6 inch which was perfect for like 4 people, and really enjoyed the creamy mousse with the delicious soft vanilla cake. *Princess Cake: I ordered a slice of this and this I really enjoyed. I asked the lady in front what was the most popular cake and this one kept coming up so I decided to give it a shot. Soft, creamy and burst of flavors this was delicious! Overall, yummy experience and check it out if you like cakes! read more

I've tried different cake slices here I don't care much about most of them. They're good, but not special like the princess cake. But the prices have gone up recently, and now a slice of the princess cake costs $6.25. It's still a great cake, but not as great of a deal it used to be. read more
Still the best bakery in town. So imagine my shock and disappointment when I went to pick up a mocha bday cake I'd ordered online only to be told they hadn't made it. Mocha is my moms fav and she was crushed. They offered another cake on the house. Then, while I was on the phone with her to choose a new cake, they came back out and said if I didn't mind waiting an hour, they'd make the mocha cake and also refund me. Great customer service! Luckily I had time to wait. Mom loved the cake and already requested it again for next year. read more
Wow! Another 5-star princess cake in the city! I've been visiting different bakeries for princess cake lately and today, it was Schubert's Bakery. Came here in the early afternoon and they were out of slices so I ended up buying the whole cake. Oops! The smallest cake was $39 and it probably feeds 6-8 people. I'm planning to eat it over the next few days lol The cake was super soft and fluffy. The marzipan was thin and soft (not chewy) and along with the cream & raspberry jam, it was perfect! Also, it wasn't too sweet. I'll definitely come back for more in the near future! read more
Not too many places make the Black Forest cake so when the next occasion came up, I jumped at the chance to purchase one from Schubert's. The cake did not disappoint. It was chicanery with hints of cherry and a little sourness. The cake was moist and the cream light and decadent at the same time. This bakery has been around since my childhood and we've always ordered the ladyfingers or mousse cake, but i think this one is my favorite! Cakes are not only delicious but always beautifully decorated. I love the little chocolate square details. Pick up is a breeze. Just show up at the designated time or after and they'll check for your name on the list. read more
The cakes here are all so good and spongy! We got these cakes for my sisters birthday and ate them a day late, as it was celebrated a day later. We all enjoyed it even a day later. A classic bakery that never disappoints!! I have been eating Schubert's cakes probably since I was a baby and I still do!! In the last couple years, my prior workplace was near Schubert's so we also ordered from here whenever it was someone's birthday. It is located on a busy street and also in a busy area so parking may be hard to come by. We had to circle around a couple times last time we came. They are only allowing 3? people in the store at a time so everyone is distanced inside. The small line outside was also distanced. I believe I've had their tiramisu cake the most and it is always so so good!!! But recently we tried their strawberry mousse cake for my SO's mom's birthday and it was sooooo delicious! I tend to go towards chocolate and never fruity cakes but after trying this strawberry mousse cake, I would definitely order again and recommend! It was the perfect amount of sweet and tart. ALSO the biggest thing was the whole cake itself wasn't heavy. I could easily eat 2-3 slices and I didn't feel bad after. Not sure if that is good or bad... heh! Their lady fingers are always yummy too! Schubert's is such an oldie but a goodie!! I'm happy to see they still have lots of business during this time. If you don't know what to get for a birthday cake, special occasion cake, or a just cause cake, definitely come check this place out! You won't be disappointed!! read more

The staff is a 5star with great customer service very friendly. I ordered the quote popular mango mousse and a small piece of tiramisu just to try. I probably ordered the wrong cake. I'm not a big fan of the mango mousse. I guess I expected a bit more sweetness towards the cake. The chocolate decorations are A+ good quality chocolate. The tiramisu is not a classic tiramisu just FYI it's a tiramisu cake. I would come back and try some other desserts next time. Support our local businesses. read more

Do they decorate your order for a baby shower?
I know they will write on a cake but I suggest you simply call them for another type of request.
Do they sell out of cakes, is it recommended to pre order?
I came in 5 minutes before closing one time and they still had 4 cakes left. If you want a specific cake it's probably best to preorder but if not, then all their cake selections are pretty good.

Perhaps not. It would be good to have a backup plan, or at least be flexible as to what type of cake. Other people might also be trying to order. Good luck!
