I was looking forward to visiting this famous bakery in Richmond, the number of positive reviews for Shubert is really impressive. But unfortunately, after trying their pastries, I was rather disappointed. Being a European myself, I have tried many traditional cakes and pastries in different countries, which gives me an understanding of the balance of their tastes and textures. From what I tried, the black currant mousse cake only looked good, but the biscuit and mousse (not even similar to black currant) were separate components that did not interact with each other. Custard cake with cream was just sweet and very fatty, I think it would not hurt a little vanilla and some sour note. Also, this bakery lacks coffee and a place to sit and taste their goods, fully grab and go spot. Overall it's unlikely I'll give this place another try. read more

Very poor customer service! I have been a customer here for several years up until recently. I ordered a 8x12 pink champagne cake online and paid for the cake for Thanksgiving pickup between 3:45-4pm. Left my contact information (phone and email) and when I went to pick up my cake at 3:30pm their store were closed. There was no indication when I placed my order that they would close early nor was I notified by phone or email to pick up my cake sooner! Highly disappointed since I have no cake to bring to a dinner that I had prepaid for!! Very unprofessional! They should have updated their pick up time to prevent any mishaps from customers ordering a cake to be picked up only to find out their times of closing were altered!. read more

Can you believe Schubert's been around since 1911?!?!!!! A SF stable, they have just the MOST DELISH strawberry shortcakes!!! And are famous for their variety of baked goods, including: pastries, cakes, pies and tarts. I totally lucked out and walked in today with no line! And ordered one of each of their strawberry shortcake, the Princess cake, Double Chocolate, and a couple boxes of their almond cookies to go!! SO YUM!! Their store is always super clean, and service is always friendly and their staff are so friendly and knowledgeable, and are happy to make recommendations as needed. My family has been coming to Schubert's for decades. We usually get cakes for birthdays/holidays but I used to get their cookies and hot cross buns as an after school snack as well. We usually order their mousse or whipped cream cakes but you can't go wrong with any of them. I placed an order online last month for two 6" cakes for my storybook themed baby shower. We had the Swedish Princess Cake (my favorite since I was a kid and no place has ever topped theirs) and the Black Currant Mousse. It was the right amount for under fifteen people. It's amazing outer green crust needs to be appreciated on its own, it's an almond flavored fondant that is sooo good, it can easily be overlooked because the rest of the cake is freaking delicious as well, each and every layer! Onto the cake, OMG it's so perfectly light and airy, I could eat two more slices of it, and the whipped cream layers are amazing, like so light and delicious and airy. The raspberry layers are so delicate and thin, perfect amount of tang that balances this beautiful creation. I wish I ordered more slices, it's that freaking good. Just a warning: I came in on the 26th of March for my favorite cake slice: the strawberry romanoff. I remember repeatedly saying I wanted the slice with the strawberry (strawberry romanoff) on it, three times. Kevin packed me the slice, I came home, opened the cake the next day, bit into it - it was the black forest cake. (the black forest cake has a thick layer of cherries literally SOAKED in kirsh, the alcohol they use). Kevin (short dark haired and they told me he is the only male on staff, so it has to be Kevin) had packed the wrong slice even though i asked three times for the strawberry one. I had an allergic reaction to the cake, because that amount of alcohol in the black forest cake, and had to throw out the rest. I went back to the bakery a few days later, asked to speak to the male staff member that was working when I last went, and I told him to take client requests seriously because some of us have allergies. They refunded the cake slice on my request, said it would show back on my account in a few days. (A woman staff member told me that most of their cakes have a little bit of alcohol in it, which I did not know. but the Strawberry romanoff cake was tried and proven with me.) I believe that Kevin gave me the wrong slice on purpose, although I cannot prove it. it's intuition. I remember repeatedly asking for the strawberry cake slice three times when I saw him reaching for another slice of cake. (black forest is next to the strawberry romanoff). The baker amped up the tiramisu cake. We all lit up after our first bites. It's our go-to for birthdays. The ladyfingers were so fresh, light, and airy. Slightly sweet, too. The good: There are so many good bakeries in SF and this is no exception. This is a small and quaint bakery that has been around for over a century. I tried the opera cake, pear tart, fuerst pueckler cake, and the black forest. Everything was great. I love the European cake flavors and options and how everything looks naturally colored. The service here is very quick. I like that you can order cake by the slice or get an entire cake. They're nicely decorated and their selection will make you want to try everything. They have 8 cake choices for the chocolate cake category alone. Then they have mousse cakes, berry cakes, shortcakes, cheesecakes, and much more. I'll have to try their Napoleon and Swedish Princess cake (one of their most popular menu items) next time. You can order cakes as small as 6". The bad: There's no indoor or outdoor seating areas for you to enjoy your pastries. Instead, I went to a nearby cafe to order coffee and to use their outdoor dining space so I could enjoy my pastries ASAP. A small 6" cake can cost around $35. When I got inside, there were only four cakes left - and lucky for me Strawberry Shortcake was one of them. My son and my whole family loved it. Still the best bakery in town. So imagine my shock and disappointment when I went to pick up a mocha bday cake I'd ordered online only to be told they hadn't made it. Mocha is my moms fav and she was crushed. They offered another cake on the house. This is near the Chinatown part of SF I believe and once we got there we luckily found some parking close by even though there was an event going on. My go-to are: - Neapolitan - love the flaky layers filled with cream and strawberries. If you want a light cake, this is it. I don't see this on their online menu anymore, but maybe they can still make it if you ask in advance. - Double chocolate mouse cake - it's a chocolate sponge cake filled with chocolate mousse. It might sound like a heavy, rich, and overly sweet cake but it's nothing close to that. The sponge cake is light and fluffy, the slight bitterness in the dark chocolate mousse compensate the sweetness in the white chocolate mousse. I've tried the mango mousse and tiramisu before but I keep going back to the Neapolitan and double chocolate mousse. read more

A classic bakery that never disappoints!! I have been eating Schubert's cakes probably since I was a baby and I still do!! In the last couple years, my prior workplace was near Schubert's so we also ordered from here whenever it was someone's birthday. It is located on a busy street and also in a busy area so parking may be hard to come by. We had to circle around a couple times last time we came. They are only allowing 3? people in the store at a time so everyone is distanced inside. The small line outside was also distanced. I believe I've had their tiramisu cake the most and it is always so so good!!! But recently we tried their strawberry mousse cake for my SO's mom's birthday and it was sooooo delicious! I tend to go towards chocolate and never fruity cakes but after trying this strawberry mousse cake, I would definitely order again and recommend! It was the perfect amount of sweet and tart. ALSO the biggest thing was the whole cake itself wasn't heavy. I could easily eat 2-3 slices and I didn't feel bad after. Not sure if that is good or bad... heh!
