Thanks to some lovely friends for getting this for us to try for my birthday! Each dessert looked so impeccable and the taste was so refreshing. The berry cake, mocha cake and fruit tarts were the perfect textures with the flavor jumping out on my palate and the tart had the best crisp. I feel the part of my identity that is not a cake / sweets person is being worn down from all these well made treats!
Excellent Princess cake as always. An early Mother's Day treat. The taste and decorations are always consistent and reliable and beautifully presented. An 8" princess cake costs around $70. Definitely a must try if you love marzipan, jam and fresh cream. My favorite celebration cake.
My family and I have been going here for a couple of years now and have loved every cake we have gotten. I remember trying the mango cheesecake as well. It wasn't too sweet and the cheesecake didn't feel too heavy like other cheesecakes do- this goes for the strawberry cheesecake as well. I would say that the strawberry tastes better than the mango because the mango was a bit sour. The tiramisu mousse cake is a family favorite and we have gotten it a few times now. It's perfectly balanced and not too sweet (which is very important lol). The workers are super kind and when I went to pick up a cake once, the lady gave me a couple free cream puffs. There is no seating so this is definitely the place where you get your sweet treat and go somewhere else. Note that parking can be a bit hard to find. You can also place your orders online or make a call.

The cakes are pretty good, but we had such an unpleasant experience with the girl that helped us. We came in and waited in line. Got called up. She asked us what we wanted and when we said one thing she kept rudely saying what else before we even had a chance to tell her what else. They had 50% off cakes and then we asked her the flavors. Then we asked how much they would be and she said look at the board, 50% off that. I think her coworker realized how rude she was being and intervened and let us know the price. We asked her what cake this particular one since it didn't have a label was and she goes same as the one on the bottom, read the label. She spent more effort saying that rather than just stating the name of the cake. We got ended up getting three cakes, the strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse and princess cake. I would skip the princess cake here and head to ambrosia. Theirs are 10x better.

Grabbed a slice of their two most popular items: Princess cake: Nice, smooth flavors with a nice almond essence from the marzipan. I can see why this is so popular. Strawberry short cake: Solid cake that reminds me of the WF Strawberry chiffon cake. Overall, would recommend the Princess cake if you want a unique experience, but a slice is a bit pricey ($7)
I have ordered from here many times over the years including my wedding cake back about 11 years ago. So I figure its time for a review! The cake that I recently got was good tasting but it really made my stomach hurt every time I ate it. We did finish it but something was a bit off. It was smaller then I remember it being and there may have been a layer of cake missing in the middle. I think I remember the cakes being 3 layers of cake with creme or filling in between??? It was advertised as having strawberry filling which it did not have. The cake we ordered this time was chocolate with strawberry's & whipping cream frosting. There was very little strawberry like maybe 10 -15 slices on top and not inside the filling or any other part of the cake so it lacked balance and acidity to break up the rich cream inside. The cake is flavorful & creative but I just have those few issues that I wanted to bring up.
I've been to Schubert's a few times, and I'm incredibly disappointed. Schubert's is located in inner Richmond in the San Francisco area, and initially was highly recommended as one of the better bakeries to go to for special occasion cakes. A cake can really make or break that special occasion, and they succeeded in ruining one. I had ordered over the phone, and ordered based on what sounded good, and what was suggested. The cakes are very pricey, and frankly overpriced. What may have been wonderful in years past, hasn't been my experience. The store staff is off putting, unwelcoming, and I dare say rude. I picked up my order ( mango mousse) for a birthday celebration. I had requested candles in a certain color, and was presented candles in silver. " That's all we have" it would have been proper to let me know upfront when I placed the order, and was told " no problem". The cake was horrible. All of it. The mango flavor tasted like tin/metal. The actual cake was dry and tasted like freezer burn. It was inedible. It was also $75.00. There MUST be better bakeries that offer delicious birthday cakes in the San Francisco area. This isn't one of them.
Wonderful bakery! I've always gone in the morning- it's quiet, the staff are super helpful, and there's rarely a crowd. Cakes are abundantly decorated and beautiful, including the packaging. The strawberry shortcake is chock full of fresh strawberries and in lieu of frosting is layered with light whipped cream. Not too sweet and super moist . And unheard of post covid prices for the size of an 8" whole cake at $40!
Ordered for pick up 24 hour before. I opted for the 6 in Swedish princess cake but with ivory marzipan. The person taking my order over the phone made sure the spelling of the words and names were all correct. Pick up process was easy - walked up to the register and told them my name. This bakery does have several spots for seating. They have a little sample tray in front as well. I noticed adding lettering was an extra $2 if you do it there but it wasnt charged for mine so seems like ordering in advance is the way to go! There were still plenty of variety and sizes of cake available on display when I got there at 3pm so I would think it's possible to do last min cake pick up too Cake was nicely decorated and tasted soft and fluffy inside. Only the outside marzipan layer was sweet. Price for the princess cake here is $2-$3 more than other places in SF but considering you can opt for another color here other than green is worth it to me!
4/5: Princess cake is good but a little too sweet. $7 for a small slice. 3 layers of raspberry with good fondant.
It was a rainy Monday when I was walking along Clement Street and noticed Schubert's was open. The glass cases were mostly empty, but I saw a sign for 30% off all whole cakes and slices. There was also a small sign indicating they were day-old cakes, and the cashier mentioned they're open until 2:30 PM on Mondays (they're usually closed Mondays and Tuesdays). I didn't feel like getting a cake, so I went with a Hazelnut Nutmeg Cookie ($1.10) and a Black & White Shortbread ($1.10). Both were very good and not stale, even when I ate them the next day. I especially liked the Black & White Shortbread. I would come back on a Monday--maybe next time I'll try one of the cakes at 30% off.

Was in the area so I bought 4 cakes: 1) Swedish princess cake - so good, soft and not that sweet, just prefect 2) strawberry shortcake - very good, I would get this for my parents , not sweet 3) Tiramisu mousse 4) mango mousse $18 total for all 4 slices. read more

I love this place. It can be hard to find parking, busy and loud, a bit standoffish at times when it comes to service and the locals but their pastries are O-M-Delicious. I didn't like their princess cake as much as I thought I would but it was decent. There are a lot of locals who come in for coffee and take up seating which is limited. When you start having a line (which happens often) piling up, and you have someone's butt in your face while you're trying to shovel down a cake slice into your face it becomes awkward lol. Do yourself a favor and order large orders ahead and get your smaller orders to go. It's not a great place for large groups and people try to keep the noise levels down. It was louder than a 1995 bowling ally in there the last time I went LOL. read more

I have been going to Schubert's for cakes for years now. My favorite is their Princess cake. It is so good. We went there this year on my daughters birthday as her dad wanted to get her a Princess cake. Their cakes are so good that they almost sell out daily. I had a feeling they would not have a Princess cake as it was close to closing. They only had 2 cakes left and both were moose cakes so we did not get a cake there that day. They thought that my son was really sweet so they offered him a free cookie and let him pick any one he wanted. They told me he's a sweet kid. My birthday is only 5 days after my daughters so we ordered a Princess cake for my birthday. As always it was very good. We asked them to add a few chocolate flowers to it and they did. If you are looking for a good cake to celebrate check them out. They cakes are expensive and the price has been going up but try the Princess cake, it does not disappoint. read more
They don't disappoint! My little sister surprised me for my 22nd birthday and got me my favorite cake for today. She ordered ahead and picked up and informed me the process was quick and easy! I always look forward to celebrations since I know I get a bite of Schubert's world famous cakes! read more

The tarts, cakes, pies and cookies are so light and flavorful and beautifully decorated. We love their Princess cake, Fruit Tarts and Strawberry Shortcake. The place does a great job on presentations and is on the higher priced side but worth a try. The service is friendly and very efficient in helping customers with finding the right desserts. A neighborhood gem located in the Richmond District. read more

Where have I been! My cousin's well known secret - until now. He always brings delicious desserts when he visits us in the South Bay. I just found out the name and looks like everyone else agrees. Our favorites have been the fruit tarts; so fresh. The chocolate-chocolate cake is also delicious . It's not too overwhelming sweet and not too rich of chocolate but still real chocolate. They look amazingly decorated too. read more

This bakery is delicious! They have some "special" offerings which I assume are like older cakes for about $3.15 each, and the normal cakes are around $4-5 each. I had the Swedish Princess and the Chocolate Mousse cake, and both were delicious. The cake was covered in this beautiful yellow marzipan, and it had this excellent blend of a sweet taste with a touch of an almond flavor. It was also smooth and not too sweet, which made it quite nice. The cream in the middle with the raspberry sauce melded together beautifully with the soft cake. It all came together quite nicely. The chocolate mousse was pretty good as well, with a rich chocolaty taste, with a good douse of cream to make it an extravagant indulgence. My friends got the cheesecake and the apricot/almond tart. Both of those however weren't as good. I didn't like the cheesecake all that much, and while the tart was decent, I'm not a big fan of apricot. Overall a great bakery with tasty options! read more
Lovely looking pastries, pretty prompt service, and they accept credit card... but the 8 x 12 opera cake I got for my mom's birthday ($58) had dry layers of cake inside. The chocolate and hazelnut fillings were creamy and delicious, and the decoration on top was beautiful, but that made the dry cake so much more noticeable and disappointing. It makes sense that larger cakes may not rotate out as much so I guess the lesson learned is to order these ahead so that they are (hopefully) fresh. Schubert's seems to be an institution with a lot to choose from, but the list of great SF bakeries is formidable. It may be a while before I give them another try... read more
SWEETS GALORE! This place hits my sweet tooth spot every time. Whatever type of sweets you're craving, they'll have it. Chocolate, fruity, chocolate-fruity? I've only been here twice but I've tried the mango mousse (personal favorite), chocolate mousse, and chocolate truffle. The mango mousse is absolutely perfect-- it's not overly sweet and it's so light and fluffy that you don't feel too stuffed afterward. I preferred the chocolate mousse over the chocolate truffle. The truffle was super dense and rich-- it's the type of cake you'd just eat a small slice of and not binge-eat the whole thing like I usually do. I think of the chocolate mousse as a lighter version that'll hit your chocolate craving without making you feel guilty afterward. read more

The Black Forest cake, the friendly staff's observance of social distancing and masking, and the extra slice of yum they gave me made my experience so wonderful. Can't wait to return for more cake and sweets. What a gem of a bakery! read more

Even a half hour before closing time, they still had quite the selection. Their plain cheesecake was a little on the creamier side (not much grainy texture) but the taste was spot on. The crust was not a typical graham cracker crumbly crust, but it worked. Princess cake was fantastic - the best I've had since going to Sweden. Light, not too sweet, so fresh tasting. Almond sables, available by the bag on the counter, is the best cookie I've had in a long time. Perfectly crunchy and great almond flavor and buttery. I already can't wait to come back!! read more
I have had some wonderful cakes here. Today was St Honore, beautifully decorated. Friendly welcoming service. Why 4 stars...I like Diandra's St Honore in the Mission slightly more and I cant give 4.5 stars to Schubert's. I hear the Princess Cake here is terrific. (Did you know that one is from Sweden?). At any rate incredibly beautiful cakes at a fair price. Just hand me a fork and lock me inside. I love bakeries. read more
This review is overdue by 20 years. We've been getting cakes here since forever ago. Consistency is so important to mention. We have never had a bad experience, cakes are consistently excellent in taste, texture, freshness, and quality. Still going strong even during the pandemic and we hope they continue to thrive. Favorites: Napoleon (discontinued but still order-able if you call), Fuerst Pueckler (formerly called Neapolitan), Chocolate Mousse with Ganache, and Strawberry Shortcake. Recommend with highest level of confidence that your cake will be amazing. read more

Do they decorate your order for a baby shower?
I know they will write on a cake but I suggest you simply call them for another type of request.
Do they sell out of cakes, is it recommended to pre order?
I came in 5 minutes before closing one time and they still had 4 cakes left. If you want a specific cake it's probably best to preorder but if not, then all their cake selections are pretty good.

Perhaps not. It would be good to have a backup plan, or at least be flexible as to what type of cake. Other people might also be trying to order. Good luck!

The Marzipan is not very thick so it’s a lot lighter then one might guess just by looking at it
