I lost all respect for this cafe today. We were trying to find somewhere that was open for pick up orders, as some places are closed due to the quarantine. We called in an order and picked it up, and they automatically charge an 18% gratuity as if we were dining in and getting served, and they don't even charge an auto gratuity when you do dine in. That's quarantine gouging for sure! They just lost our business for good, which is disappointing because we like their food. read more

This is another icon of the Clear Lake area. It's not fine dining, as I would hope you would guess, but it is a fine bunch of people working here. Never had a bad meal here; love the salad with chicken for lunch, and the breakfast on the weekend is hard to beat. And if you are there for breakfast, you have to get a biscuit (or two). Typically I have a "regular"!breakfast entree with a biscuit on the side. Today it was a Country Eggs Benedict on biscuits. But if you are going for breakfast, try to get their early (0900 or earlier on Sundays) as it's a very popular place! I haven't mentioned diner in this review as I think I have eaten there only once for an evening meal but I have friends who are regulars at night. And you get to meet many of the local "celebrities". All you need to know is Iceberg!! Most yummy frozen drink ever.. it's a screwdriver with a splash of champagne. All the food is good .. fantastic green beans- My fav's are chicken fried chicken- and the shrimp salad and the club sandwiches are really good. Classic Cafe is has been a staple in this area for a while and I always forget it's there. But since we have some renovations being done in my kitchen I decided to visit with my husband and daughter. Their menu is somewhat diverse with a little of everything. I ordered the liver and onions and loved it, the portion was quite sizable and the green beans were delicious, the mashed potatoes were a little lumpy but still good. My daughter had the kids fettuccini Alfredo with some chicken, the flavor was a little blend for a $10 kids meal. My husband had the chicken fried steak with some mac and cheese and corn. He did not care much for the corn but loved the mac and cheese so much that he dipped the bread on the leftover cheese. All and all, good food, good service, and their desserts looked great. Chose Classic Cafe this past Sunday for breakfast with my husband. This was our third time here in the past year. The other two times we were impressed with the food and ambiance, today the total opposite. We were seated by a teenage boy who attempted to put us at the front window (a very cold day, 40 degrees) I requested we not sit at a window because it was too cold. He then attempted to put us at another table next to a different window, I had to point that out to him and request an empty table in the middle of the room. Next onto the music selection... Dear management "Black Sabbath" is NEVER an appropriate choice of music for a Sunday breakfast crowd, honestly unless your some biker bar I don't think it's ever appropriate for a restaurant that caters to family and an older crowd. Now the food.. I ordered hot cocoa and the waitress asked if I wanted whipped cream, instead I got cool whip. My scrambled eggs were overly yellow an indication to my that they were made with liquid eggs and not fresh eggs. My home fries were sliced potatoes that where put in the deep frier earlier that morning with maybe an attempted to warm them on the grill with some not very cooked onions before being served to me. Not only were they cold but, dried out and unappealing to eat. The biscuit was the only item they got right! Management- call a spade a spade, please. If your gonna serve cool whip then don't call it whipped cream and let me know I'm getting liquid eggs thI would have made a different menu choice had I known. read more

First time here! We love finding "Mom and Pop" cafes. My hubby had the prime rib and luckily he shared a bite. It was sooooo good. I stepped out of my norm and tried something different the almond fried shrimp with grilled veggies. It was good but I would probably try something else next time. Too many almonds for me but it was good. Our server needed a little more training, smile more, and be more observant of our empty tea glasses (had to ask twice) but she might have just been having a bad day, so we won't let that keeps us from returning. The other couple got service right away. They recieved their drinks and then ordered an appetizer. Then they received their appetizer. Meanwhile, we had not had one person say a single thing to us. This is a cozy little place, but the food just wasn't that good. Our steak, ordered medium rare, was cooked properly on one side but was almost raw on the other side. We came based upon the recommendation for prime rib, and it did not disappoint. We arrived around 1730 on a Sunday, and were promptly seated. Most people were in the bar area watching the ball game. Service was prompt, friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable. I ordered the clam chowder and the prime rib. My wife had the black and blue ahi and the prime rib. The chowder is excellent. The base is the color of old ivory because of the seasoning used. Lots of clams, good amount of pepper. The ahi was seared nicely on the outside and rare in the middle, exactly how it was ordered. Good seasoning on the crust. The prime rib had that buttery texture we look for, wasn't over seasoned, and came with a nice beefy au jus. For sides we had crispy shoestring fries and grits that I thought were perfect (but I'm not a grit expert). We finished with cheesecake and chocolate cream pie because nobody likes a quitter. The chocolate cream pie had large chunks of dark chocolate in it, and is well worth the lack of feeling I now have in my left foot. Seriously, this place was so good that I turned to my wife on the ride home and said (expletive deleted) that was great! I'm not usually take bY surprise like that. Redfish was great and so was the smoked salmon. This is a mom and pop type place with great food. Coffee shop next door is on the water and has the same owners. My Wife and I had not dined here in awhile. But we stopped in last weekend for lunch, and I'm so glad we did. I had the Shrimp & Grits, while my Wife opted for the Egg Sandwich. My Shrimp & Grits was super-delicious, and was a slightly different version than what I had sampled here in the past. It now incorporates tiny bits of ham, and beans. It had several good-sized, freshly-cooked shrimp in the dish, along with very tasty, savory grits. My Wife thoroughly enjoyed her Egg Sandwich as well, while we gazed out the front window and watched cars cruising by on Nasa Road. We will definitely be dining here again, very soon. I shaved off one star, because I think they could improve the plate presentation just a bit, in my humble opinion.; no biggie. I've eaten here twice and both times the food was great. I saw the reviews on Yelp about the drinks so I made it a point to come back. So today is day 1 for hurricane Harvey landfall. Never been to the bar area, it's packed as well as the dining area. A lot of regulars but people seem friendly not snooty. Got lucky found a table right away that had used dishes and tip from previous customers. The owner walked over and cleaned it up right away along with two employees. Owner took our drink order, was very friendly. Bar employees are very tentative even with this size crowd. Screw drivers are good and strong. I'll be returning as this place has its homely vibe to it! Glad I made it a point to come back and try the drinks. The place was busy when we walked in but the owner was in house, greeted us at the door and gave us the run-down about the changing of the menu from breakfast to lunch. We ordered from the lunch menu - the Shrimp & Grits and the Charbroiled Shrimp with mashed potatoes were both equally great... and the beignets and coffee were also good. I have eaten here a few times over the past years and been pleased, but not a regular. Today was the first time we ordered from anywhere since the quarantine. My teenage daughters and I were flying kites and playing with a frisbee at Clear Lake Park and felt like a picnic would be fun. We ordered sandwiches and fries. Club sandwich for each girl and a Reuben for me. The service on the phone was great. The food was delicious. It was my 15 year old daughter who suggested we support a non-chain business. I've been eating at Seabrook Classic Cafe for a few decades now, except for a few years back when they suddenly weren't so good. Fear not if you remember those days, because the good eats are back! Remember this place when you want a good meal and the other popular places have a 1 hour waiting line. We can always slide in and get a table immediately, no matter what the time. The service has been excellent each visit. If you like liver and onions, you'll love theirs. Chicken fried chicken? This might be their best entree. Blackened chicken or fish? Oh, yeah! They also make the best green beans and mashed potatoes in the Clear Lake area. The pie may cost a bit, but it is delicious if you happen to have room after the well portioned meals. read more

Because it is an institution, like Tookie's or say, the Hooters that used to be Frank's Shrimp Hut back in the day, you have to factor that into the quality. The things they do well, well, that's what has kept them around long enough to blossom into their institution shroud, rather than being turned into just another ... Hooters or Starbucks. Seabrook Classic Cafe has been here forever. I remember getting a bottled Coke (the glass bottle, none of that claptrap plastic nonsense) here back in the 80s. So yeah, it's still here. Unlike the former Oasis restaurant which is now Villa Capri, or something else now, and unlike Frank's Shrimp Hut now the Hooters. What made it withstand the test of time when the others cleared out in the late 90s and early 2000s? Their chicken fried steak. Bar none I have put in my mouth, there is not a better chicken fried steak (CFS just so anyone searching for CFS also snags this review) in the greater Houston area - including inside the loop, the Woodlands, even the smaller charming towns outside the city you quickly drive by on the way to Austin or San Antonio or Dallas. Chicken fried steak has a delicate balance of needing to be fried enough, but not too much; chicken flavored but not overwhelmingly fake-chickeny like KFC (Kentucky's Funky Chicken if memory serves right from the film Pootietang;) not low quality steak, but you know, it doesn't need to be the highest quality filet mignon in the world since there is all this other stuff piled on top of it. So yeah. Complex. However the wizards in the kitchen at the Classic Cafe manage to balance all of these delicate CFS nuances and consistently turn out a delicious CFS, the best in the greater Houston area, just like local neighbor Neptune Subs turns out the absolute best sandwiches in the greater Houston, and no competitor, not even Which Wich, has taken that crown from them yet. Just as magical as a good sandwich can be, so can CFS. They have a wide menu of other things. But I wouldn't have first hand experience with that, since it would be like going on an expedition for the holy grail and then settling for a bag of copper instead; or for a more relevant description it is like looking for a horcrux, finding it, and then not destroying it. If you are looking for the best CFS in the city come here, don't come here on that premise and order a salad. Get what you want, get what you need. read more

We've been eating here for thirty years. From the number of old codgers and codgerets I'm guessing they're also from the old days in the area. Alternately they may be boaters who now have the time. In spite of what the general answers say the main dining room is loud. If you know what to order it can be excellent. I don't remember anything being really bad but not everything is great. I don't eat seafood other than fried oysters (and lobster, but I haven't found any lobster in Houston that matches New England/Maine lobster.). To my taste they have the best oysters in the area. They also have the best prime rib in the area -- but prime rib, even at the best places, isn't always up to par. For me salad is simply a socially acceptable medium to transport dressing to my mouth. Their blue cheese dressing leaves a lot to be desired. It appears to be mostly commercial cream dressing base with little (very little) cheese added. At least that's how it was for years. Because it was consistently poor I haven't tried it in a very long time. We occasionally have their cheese omelet on Sunday mornings, also their eggs Benedict are quite good -- there remain only two places in the area that make them good. You have to try their Seahogs appetizer at least once. After that you may not be able to stop. Also, their French Dip is good, but be sure to ask for the upgrade to prime rib. They have super deserts baked by a lady in the area -- yum, yum. In spite of what Yelp's average says the noise level in the main dining area is loud. I've dinged them one star for service. The service is spotty. Occasionally, like tonight, it's good, but overall it's below average. That is, unless for you ogling attractive slender young women in short shorts overcomes slow, inattentive service. Hmm. . . well, I guess it does take the edge off. I finally tried this place after years of living in the neighborhood. So this review will only be for that one visit that I had -- Friday red snapper special. Every Friday they serve fresh snapper, fried, grilled or blackened with 2 sides. the price is $8-$10 depending how you order it. The fish was delicious, and i ordered it with macaroni and cheese and the fresh sauteed vegetables. the sides were also very delicious and the veggies were fresh and crisp. You get a free cobbler with your meal which was actually disgusting. I dont know what was wrong with it, but it tasted like a can of hairspray. super chemical tasting. The decor was nothing to write home about. some what institutional and a weird setup. There is a full bar in the back of the restaurant. Parking can be somewhat annoying at this location. So in summary, the food was great minus the cobbler. i will probably go back for the fish special on fridays. read more

My parents love this place. When my husband and I went we weren't crazy impressed. I had the gumbo and seafood tacos. I did think the tacos were pretty amazing. My husband had a burger and was very much NOT impressed. He asked for it medium, and it was definately well done or more. I felt bad, cause he was hoping for something good since my parents talked highly about it. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, and maybe burgers are just not their thing.
