(I have yet to see the real Italy... still on my list of travel experiences) I came here around 2:30pm wanting an outdoor dining experience.on a summer Friday. This setting was just perfect. Outdoor and indoor seating with an interior/exterior that is worth gazing at. They have umbrellas for outdoor seating in case you're worried of too much sun on your skin like me (High importance: please always wear your sunscreen y'all) This setting is located near the Los Angeles Central library which I also recommend checking out if you're in the area and have spare time. It was lunch hours. I was offered their lunch pre-fix menu for a set price. So I settled for a caprese salad, side of fries and their gnocchi pasta with beef, pork, laid with ragu sauce and topped with garnishing. Served in lunch portions meaning smaller amount which was just enough for my filling. Food was pleasant to my taste and the service was pleasing. Incredible! I was completely impressed with Settecento! I visited for dinner, while staying at the Westin Bonaventure. I made a reservation for 5:30pm on a Saturday evening and was able to get right in. Upon arrival I was initially impressed by the bar. I loved the books and the hanging musical instruments. It was very unique. The hostess sat us on the beautiful outdoor patio, near the fountain. It was the perfect summer night to sit outside. The only thing to note, is it is open, so you do get a couple interesting characters passing by, and we did have some stinky cigarette smoke from some pedestrians. I must mention the hostess...she was not very upbeat or friendly. She sort of seemed like she wasn't happy to be there, and her outfit didn't seem to fit the vibe of a nice Italian restaurant (she had on pleather leggings). However, our server and all other staff were extremely kind and helpful when asked questions about the menu. It's good to note that happy hour ends at 6pm and they have some really great items to choose from. I do wish that when ordering a mocktail (non-alcoholic) the price varied from the alcohol version. Also, my friend and I learned an important lesson that still or sparkling water is $7 a bottle. When we were offered tap, flat or sparkling, we were not aware that tap was the only free option. The food was incredible. I ordered a pizza and my friend had pasta. I loved the big piece of burrata on my pizza...it was so creamy. Met friends for dinner and was very pleasantly impressed with the whole vibe; so nice to sit in the shade and enjoy a meal. I enjoyed it enough to come back and lunch a few weeks later. The service both times was friendly, if a tad lacking in attentiveness, but food came out fast. We had drinks to start, which we enjoyed, and then some of everything from every section of the menu. Service was great with attentive staff. Food came out super fast. We wanted to try their happy hour and everything plus a soda was about $100. The pizza dough and flavors were amazing but I wish they were brought out the food as they were ready so the toppings or sauces stayed warm and cheese stayed stretchy. The burger brioche was dry and too bready in comparison to the ratio of the meat & spread. If they chose a better bread supplier, that burger would've melted in our mouth. Was in Downtown LA and looked for highly ranked restaurants. Wanted something casual where I could have a cocktail and food at the bar. Chose Settecento (walk from the hotel). Had a nice time, but probably not as good as I would have thought. The bourbon barron cocktail was fine a pretty sweet though, and the pizza was solid, but not stand out. (I am a pizza snob - make my own dough at home over 2 days, etc etc.). It's situated right by the LA Central Library and shares parking with it, which makes things quite easy. Do get the parking validated, though--you'll pay $6 instead of $40. It was a gorgeous day and perfect weather to sit outside--at least until the harsh California sun felt like it might burn us both and we started sweating profusely A wonderful employee noticed our suffering and came to the rescue by moving the umbrella. Overall, the service here was wonderful. I loved their lunch special, which for $25 included one appetizer and one pasta or pizza. I started with the prosciutto and melon and ordered the vongole pasta. To finish, I had the add-on dessert for $5, which was delicious. I don't remember the name of it, but it was a pastry soaked in rum with a scoop of gelato on the side. The pasta tasted fresh, and I loved that the sauce wasn't salty or overwhelming. Location is nice, right next to California Club Gardens in DTLA. I came alone and was asked if I wanted to sit at the bar, which is perfectly fine with me, but it was rather tight, so I asked for a table. Despite there being several empty tables for two, I still had to wait and the hostess seemed a bit annoyed, but still got me a nice table outside next to the garden. I ordered a glass of wine, the soup of the day (mushroom cream soup), risotto as the main course and a tiramisu for dessert. The soup was rather bland. The risotto was delicious, but I found the portion a bit small. The tiramisu was very tasty. The service was ok, but I never got a bread basket and was never offered any parm for my risotto. Prosciutto Crudo e Melone: super fresh and sweet melon paired perfectly with thinly sliced prosciutto and arugula for contrasting flavors. Sweet, salty, bitter/juicy ,meaty, crunchy mouth explosion of textures and flavors. After the appetizer my pizza took a little while to come out. It was pretty that day so that's probably why. Waiter also realized and came by and told me he would go check on it for me. 3 minutes later it came. Appreciate the attention. Funghi and Salsiccia: first, the pizza crust and bread is soooo good. Super thin, crispy and nice gluten development, slightly chewy. Perfect base for the toppings. The mozzarella cheese was really rich and just the right amount. Great balance with the mushrooms and Italian sausage. I loved this pizza and ate the whole thing haha. The bread had nice char. Really great pizza here. I was walking past this spot not even realizing it was where I'd end up eating--it was my first time here, and I actually thought it was part of the library next door! To my surprise, I sat right in the beautiful outdoor area I had just been admiring. The scenery was gorgeous, and it made for the perfect happy hour experience. Came here on a first date, and it was...good. It was a beautiful restaurant, and we were seated outside kind of far away from the restaurant and basically everyone else dining there. We got lucky, because it was a beautiful night in LA. I don't know what it was about our server, but she was not helpful and it honestly just felt like we were bothering her every time she came to check on us. She was not warm, and didn't explain ANYTHING on the menu. She didn't ask if it was our first time or anything. Didn't even ask if we wanted to see the dessert menu. It seemed like a nice restaurant, so I would have expected a lot more hospitality. My date was super polite, but if I wasn't on a date I'd try to figure out this server a bit more. Anyway! We got the truffle pasta which was good, and the Setteceno salad and pizza - which were average. I chose this place because it sounded like authentic Italian food, but given the lack of care from the server I can't say I felt an authentic Italian experience having been to Italy several times myself. This relatively new establishment in DTLA is beautiful! It has both an inside area as well as outdoor patio. Both are decorated with refined elegance in mind. We came here for a lunch and they a special for $25 that you get an appetizer and an entree. The food was definitely worth it. The caprese was fresh and balanced and my was tasty. The service was friendly overall but the host did come across a little snobby that we didn't have a reservation... there was no one else there when we checked in for our party too. The main reason for the four stars is that there was this 3% "KitchenLuv" fee that we didn't see on the menu and only on the check to provide a living wage to the staff. I am not liking this trend of these fees, but this felt a little more nefarious that we were not told this until the check. The "bright side" is that it does note you can take it off but then you feel like an a-hole for not giving the staff a living wage (this should be worked into the process anyway). We came by on a Saturday for brunch at 1pm. We quickly made a reservation on the way over, which I'm glad we did because although there were plenty of reservations available, there were multiple walk-in parties waiting to be sat when we arrived. The service was so slow. There was only one waiter fighting for his life with ten tables outside, which wasn't his fault, however we definitely felt it. The food was way better than expected, which is the only reason why I'd return. What really blew my mind was a discrepancy I brought up to our server about the price of bottomless mimosas & aperol spritzes on the physical menu versus the online menu. Online, it says both are $19. However on the physical menu at the restaurant, it says bottomless mimosas are $23 and aperol spritz is $28. When I asked the server about this, he said "You know how it is, they lure you in with one thing but then it's something else."..... What????? The admission of the bait and switch was so shocking, and honestly gross. I rarely find anything worth writing about in DTLA. After owning a downtown condo for 20 years, my family called it quits and moved to the beach. I mean... that is why we left Boston in the first place, right? So imagine my surprise when a random book hunt at the library next door led me to this hidden gem. (Backstory: the Venice library didn't have the very specific romantic smut my wife is into lately--thanks, BookTok--and this spot had the only available copy nearby. So, yes... smut led me to Settecento.) And I'm so glad it did. As we sink deeper into the digital abyss, books are about as rare as arch-supporting Chuck Taylors. Maybe that's why I was instantly charmed by the book pillars in this place (check my pics). And as a classical musician, the hanging instruments above the bar absolutely won me over. It's like someone preserved a slice of analog soul in the middle of downtown. Old is the new cool. Service? Fantastic. Our hostess from Poland was lovely, and our server--a tatted damsel from Canada--was equally kind. I was taking photos all over the place and not once did I get the side-eye. Everyone was genuinely nice. So refreshingly Un-LA. We only stopped in for coffee and a couple snacks, but that tiramisu? Stellar. The pecorino-topped fries? Addictive. I now fully regret not ordering more. The space is huge, with plenty of seating inside and out, and honestly? We got same day reservations. Parking is on the street but we found some luckily. The ambiance is amazing. I love the instruments above the bar inside. We sat outside which was really unique to sit in the middle of skyscrapers while being on a lawn with trees & cute lighting. I really liked eating outside, there were also heat lamps so it wasn't too cold. The happy hour deals on wine are great, we also got the Polpette which were meatballs with marinara and focaccia. We also got the guava picante (pretty spicy) & the spicy margarita (less spicy) For our mains we had the Fettuccine alla Nerano which was fried zucchini, butter, provolone cheese, squash blossom. I started the with Polenta Fritta and the spicy margarita. There was about was 3-4 pieces of the polenta fritta. A small portion but still crispy and tasty and the cheese fondue paired pretty well. The spicy marg wasn't too sweet which I appreciate and it had a nice kick. For entree I got the Guancia Brasata, which is beef cheek braised in red wine. Such a hearty dish and very comforting. Perfect for a winter entree. The cheek was very tender and fell apart and the seasoning was spot on. The ambience of the restaurant is perfect for date nights. The inside has memorable decorations and the outside dining area was pretty with tea light candles at every table. There is only two cons: Not enough heat lamps for outdoor dining. Delicious savory truffle dishes. Our server Rimus could not be more charming and enthusiastic. Rimus shared the creation of the beautiful rustic book decoration, the pizza oven from Napoli, the wonderful owner. He helped us choose our dishes.... The truffle mushroom garlic pizza was out of this world good. Our only regret was that we were short on time and dining companions so that we could not justify getting one of their specialty cocktails and the sausage pepperoni and garlic pizza that Rimus said was really good. My first thought upon walking into Settecento is how beautiful it looks. I loved their use of books as decor and the color scheme they used. If memory serves, the appetizers seemed to be tapas style. Example- meatball app included 2 meatballs and 2 pieces of bread. Portion sizes are a little on the smaller side, but everything tasted great. My coworker and I came here for dinner and it was lovely to sit outside on the "grass" area under the chandeliers and string lights. very cute vibe. It's still loud because it's on a busy corner in downtown LA, but they've made the area very lovely. Diego was our server and he was excellent. Super welcoming, provided suggestions when we asked. He always made sure that we were ok. The cocktails here are great! I had a tequila and ginger cocktail on the happy hour, and it was lovely. My coworker loved her bourbon drink from the happy hour as well. We also ordered the meatballs and the bruschettas off of the happy hour menu. The meatballs were great! The bruschettas were also very solid. Definitely check out their happy hour! We each got a main dish as well. I got the gnocchi and my coworker got the pomodora pasta. Food at lunch was horrible. It looked like it was dumped out of a 1980s Sysco truck and onto a plate. The plating was very 80's, the quality just reprehensible. Dead iceberg lettuce in the salad, factory made thick balsamic dressing out of a squeeze bottle. Everything prepared by Sysco. What a waste of this location. I was embarrassed for them, for wasting this space. The layout is also terrible. There's very little seating inside, especially for two tops, so if it's a hot day or cold day, well too bad if you didn't come with a bigger group for the few inside tables. Well I wasn't going to mention it, but since the business made a response-- our waiter who was very nice and doing his best, asked us for a good yelp review. I'm sure we weren't the only guests that received such a request. He was sweet, and so it took me awhile to post this review. Anyhow be it as it may that they might possibly have a few good ingredients, the food was simply awful. This was a cute place in the heart of downtown Los Angeles with great pastas and pizzas. I love the book and violin theming and there's also a great indoor/outdoor vibe. The pizza is made in a big wood fire oven and the pastas seemed super fresh. Everything was pretty good and everyone enjoyed their meals! It's a great place to meet up with friends and grab a drink or go out for a dinner after a night on the town. I really enjoyed the evoo garlic pasta and the gnocchi was excellent as well. Service was just okay and it was really hard to get our waitress' attention the whole night. We sat waiting for the bill for quite some time and had to finally flag her down multiple times throughout the night just to get everything squared away. But it did seem busy at the restaurant so maybe they were just slightly understaffed or something like that. Settecento, 700 in Italian, is in the former Patina Café Pinot which had a nearly 25 year run. Settecento has done a great job opening up the space by using wide, raisable windows that bring the outside in. The skylight opens up to the tallest building in Los Àngeles which soars up almost 90° vertically. Chandra was a very helpful, friendly waitress who efficiently saw me through Saturday late lunch through happy Hour that starts everyday from 2 to 6pm. Btw, the lunch combo applies for the weekday of only. Perfect place to come especially if you're visiting the Egypto-Art Deco Central Library which is just next door. 1) Caprese is typically a summer dish since tomatoes are at their peak of flavour. I realize a tomato in February may not be ideal, but ordered any way. The whole semi ripe tomato is flamed charred, hollowed out to make room for a smooth yet taut textured, juicy Burrata cheese that oozes out whey when cut with a knife. Dressed with a sprig of basil leaves and simple a olive oil basil dressing. I asked for a bit of sea salt to add more sea minerality, but Chandra was gracious in arming me with salt & black pepper grinders, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, and EVOO so I was able to add more layers of flavours as I progressed through the Caprese. 2) Spaghetti alla Chitarra refers to the pasta dough being run through what looks like Guitar strings to make long string pasta. Reminds me more of Pici pasta which is thicker, more chewy, rounded mouthfeel. Salsa di Pomodoro has bits of smoked Guanciale which imitates bacon. Has a bright tomato flavour, but lacks Umami. Perhaps a bit of chicken broth would remedy that. I added salt, black pepper, Aceto Balsamico as a gastrique to enliven the slightly dulled original dish. 3) Pizza a la Nonna: Thin crust, "white" pizza since there is no Salsa Marinara. Polpette/meatballs cooked in Ragù sauce. Pieces of soft creamy, fried eggplant. Parmesan Cream, Stracciatella/cheese from Puglia shredded buffalo mozzarella curds. The Polpette has a meaty, finely ground beefy texture with a bit of garlic, Italian herbs. The eggplant is unseasoned except the oil it was fried in. Parmesan Cream & melted Stracciatella is creamy but bland. Overall, an unmemorable experience. 1-3a) Pronotto Occhetti, Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmonte, Italian 2021: Nice juicy red with bright cherries, agrodolce, pleasantly rough tannins, faint damask, heirloom rose bouquet. Happy Hour: 4) Pepata di Cozze: Black Mussels stewed in a bit of white wine laced broth perfumed with garlic, parsley, tomato, raw lemon wedges. Oceanic taste of the mussels and citrus acidity also infuse into the broth. Accompanying Focaccia has a toasty top & bottom while the middle layer is soft & moist for good textual contrast. I used the Foccacia to sop up the light, tasty broth. 4a) Lychee Martini sounded exotic so ordered it, not because it paired with the Cozze. Strong musky fruitiness of Lychee was captured with what may be a coconut accent. Instead of Vodka, I substituted with Gin for more herbal effect. Rather sweet, but tasty. Food here is acceptable, but Settecento presents a breezy, bright, leisurely respite from everyday hectic, quotidian routines which makes it so special to come for a nosh.
