I was in town for lunch with friends and came across this restaurant. The food tastes amazing specially the shrimp juicy pork dumpling which reminds me of a discontinued item (cucumber shrimp XLB) from Din Tai Fen years ago. These dumplings tastes a bit on the sweet side in comparison to Din Tai Feng; however, the price is much more affordable. A very well decorated Chinese restaurant in Tustin. Their menu spans from salads, to dumplings, bowls and hot pots. I always like having a variety of items available to try. To start off I got the Cucumber Salad and the Fries Dumplings. The salad was nicely pickled and had a good balance of sweet and spicy. I was looking forward to the dumplings but maybe it was just me but it felt like it needed a better sauce. The table side sauce was alright but something with sesame seed oil, soy sauce and spicy paste would've been amazing. As for the entrees I had the Gyu-Don and Golden Prime Beef Noodle Soup. A rice dish and a hot pot. I personally liked the Gyu Don better as it had a nice mix of fat, sweetness and savory flavor from the onions. We came here for lunch, it was very busy during the lunch hour. Fortunately, we were sat down pretty quickly and our orders were taken immediately. We had the calamari, the meat rolls, the soup dumplings and one other main dish that came with rice. My favorite out of all the items we ordered was the soup dumplings and the calamari. They serve you a side of vinegar with something to dip into and it was good. I do love to have a lot of that chili they have here. This place is popular so you might have to wait a bit. The XLB is very good and indeed comparable to Ding Tai Fung especially at a lower price point. Absolutely worth a try. However, I'm still not sure if I plan to come back. Why? Because everything else we tried was disappointing. For 2 trips, my family tried the scallion pancakes, potato shrimp, fried rice, pan-fried dumplings, and calamari. The scallion pancakes were too greasy and didn't have enough green onions it in. I don't see the point if the dough is not filled with green onions. The potato shrimp is quite yummy but the portions are too small. The pan-fried dumpling skin is good, but the filling is boring and tastes odd to me. The calamari was good the first time, but bad the second time. The portion was also too small and the pieces we got were difficult to chew down. The fried rice was the most offensive to me. You can clearly see that they use those frozen vegetable variety packs of carrots, peas, and corn that you see at every grocery store. If I wanted that, I would just make it myself. I don't want to sound mean, but I really don't see the hype for this place lasting much longer unless they improve the rest of the menu outside of XLB. And I am unfortunately in the camp of the people who say if you want Ding Tai Fung then just make plans to go to Ding Tai Fung. This place doesn't come close besides the XLB, once again. read more

Saw the listing of this new restaurant while looking for lunch options. Who doesn't love the tiny packets of juicy joy that are XLBs? I certainly can't say no. We arrived around 12:30, the wait-list on the Yelp app said they weren't taking names anymore but found the wait-list Yelp tablet outside the restaurant doors. Place was completely packed, which is a good sign overall. Service is brisk but thankfully competent. The staff are too busy for niceties and chitchat but there's hot dumplings to deliver so just suck it up like you suck the plentiful juices out of those dumplings before you bite down hard. Servings are very small though what you get is pretty tasty. There were two of us and we had to order 3 steamer baskets of XLBs (6 pieces per order) and the wontons in chili oil (best thing we ate!) as well as the apps and dessert to be full. We ordered beef roll to go but I forgot to take a photo of it but it looked good on other tables. The shredded bean curd was fresh tasting but low on flavor. The chili oil and black vinegar table condiments dress it up nicely. Calamari was tasty but I missed my favorite part (the tentacles) as we were only served the rings and tail portions. Once the wontons arrived I was using the chili oil as sauce on everything else. Steamed custard buns were delicious. They looked like the frozen stamped stuff you can get from any Asian market but tasted above average with tender bun and not-too-sweet custard filling so it seems that they are house made. While we enjoyed what we ordered, there's a notable lack of vegetal matter on the rather limited menu to order. I'm not interested in fried rice or noodle soups so we were left with only a few slightly varied dumplings to choose from. Serving sizes are quite small for the prices so that also makes me hesitate to recommend 7 Grams, which is a shame because otherwise the items we received were delicious. The menu seems to be geared toward beverages as they take up the largest portion of the menu. The design of the menu shows exactly which sections have the most choices. It's a terrible design btw because the paper pages, arranged in a skewered clipboard configuration in graduated sizes, showed signs of deterioration and unappetizing staining already after having only been in use a short amount of time the restaurant has been open. Overall I like this restaurant but I would hope to see more entree and vegetable options on the menu and maybe larger portions of food if the prices remain unchanged. read more

A friend of mine highly recommended this place so I decided to give them a shot with two of my girlfriends on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. We dined here pretty late around 8:30pm. And knowing how popular this place is on Yelp, Seven Grams was still poppin that late. All the tables were occupied so we were seated at the bar tables. We ordered cucumber salad, Seven Grams XLB dumplings, Wonton with chili sauce, Beef Roll and Golden Prime Beef noodle. All the dishes were really good. But I probably wouldn't order the Golden Prime Beef again. It was my least favorite. Not bad, but not worth ordering IMO. The wontons with chili sauce were so good that we placed a second order!! The service is here is really fast and attentive. Parking is in a shared parking lot, we didn't have any issues finding parking that late. I'm sure it gets packed for dinner and on weekends. Totally ran into this place by accident after my Tax appointment. What better way to forget the tax season than with some good Xiaolongbao and noodles. Establishment is clean and staff is helpful. My new favorite dumpling house!! We came on a Saturday night around 7:00 p.m. and were expecting quite a long wait from word of mouth. However, we were brought in within 5 minutes because we were a smaller party. The waiting area outside was nice, with heating and benches. Inside, we found the menu was pretty simple, unlike some other dumpling spots, with an appetizer section, noodles, rices, specialities, and of course, the dumpling! We went for an infamous selection of cucumber salad, XLB, beef rolls, and cold noodles. Here's how it went down. Cucumber salad: Nice and refreshing with a tart and sweet soy flavor. It was a great starter and a palate cleanser! XLB: These were super juicy and not as spicy as we thought! The saltiness went really well with the ginger and vinegar!! Noodles: These were also refreshing, as they were cold, and had a pleasant peanut flavor. The noodles were very long and cooked perfectly. Decided to try this place on a Thursday evening around 7:30. Short wait about 15-20 min (recommend signing up on waitlist via Yelp) and once seated we had prompt and friendly servers. After reading reviews and observing what neighboring tables had ordered we got the pig ear salad, spicy pork wontons, pork and shrimp XLB and the beef noodle soup. Here's my breakdown by dish: Pig ear salad- 3/5 I have had better and it was not spicy at all but it was still tasty. Like the one at A&J better. Spicy pork wontons- 4/5 again, not spicy but perfectly cooked and juicy. Loved these! Rivaled Din Tai Fung. Pork and shrimp XLB- 4/5 decent and great flavor but slightly below Din tai Fung. What a wonderful addition to the OC area, and a huge bonus for all the Trader Joe's shoppers in Tustin as its located in the same complex. This particular location looks to have taken over the old Jinya ramen location, and it's a total upgrade in my opinion. I love how Tustin / Orange is getting some new amazing Chinese establishments to eat at with the recent additions of Yum Dumpling, and now this spot. If you come here, just know it's surprisingly busy. Like really busy. I've come here on random weekdays between 11:00 - 12:00 and it's always busy. The location is relatively new too so I guess word travels fast. If you come for lunch, expect to wait 5 to 20 minutes for a table and make sure you put your name on the waitlist tablet in the front. Throughout the wait time the tablet always somehow ends up locking out, so if you can't put your name down go inside, flag someone and have them fix it. You don't want to wait without adding yourself to the list. If you're in the mood for some juicy authentic XLBs then this is a must try. I would put the quality of dumplings and XLB close to, if not on par with, din tai fung / paradise dynasty in South Coast. The difference is it is miles cheaper here, and the wait is a fraction of the time compared to those spots. Come here instead if you're local, and don't waste your time driving over to South Coast for the same quality. Other than the dumplings, my favorite appetizer is the pork ears. My goodness, it might be my favorite item on the entire menu. Crunchy, a little spicy, and wonderfully balanced. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like that stuff 100% order it. The soups here are good as well, though carried heavily by the noodles. The noodles in the soup dishes are amazing, the broth itself on both the golden soup and tomato soup could be improved. I just wish the broth had more dept and richness. Its not bland, but its lacking a bit to take it to the next level. It would be a match made in heaven if you could take the noodles from this place and have the broth from the beef noodle soup at Yum Dumpling. Prices here are really reasonable, and ambiance is really cute and clean. One of the BEST dumplings place in OC/Tustin. I have honestly nothing to complain about the food, everything we tried was very good. Favorites have to be the beef roll, big pieces, filled and flavorful. Second favorite, the dumplings in chili sauce, very meaty and not super spicy that it is difficult to enjoy. The inside of the restaurant is super cute, clean and bright. They have multiple size tables and high tops along with bar sitting all around. Don't get confused though, no alcohol is being sold (yet I hope). So why only 4 stars, the service is not very tidy yet. It seems like there's no roles determined. The young lady who sat us, was cleaning a table when we arrived and was confused as to where to sit us. We weren't really sure who was our server, enough that we got our check twice. I had lunch here at 11AM on a weekday and I was the second customer that day, and I noticed a lot more people started coming in within 30 minutes after me. I could tell that Seven Grams is pretty popular among families and older customers. The food was pretty good. I had the Golden Prime Beef Noodle Soup and it was considered "medium spice", which I would say is fair; however, for someone like me who has a low spice tolerance and stomach acid reflux issues, it was spicy. I also had the XLB 6 pieces and wonton with chili sauce. They were both pretty delicious. Again, the wontons with chili sauce was spicy for me, but overall everything was delicious! The ambiance was clean and modern and the waiters were very attentive. I drink a lot of water, and they kept refilling my water when I didn't ask, which was a huge plus for me. I did had a coughing spell after trying the wonton chili sauce (again, I have a low spice tolerance) for the first time, and the waiter was observant and made sure I was okay. I really appreciate the waiter giving me more napkins and water; it was a little embarrassing, but the waiter seemed more than happy to help me. I definitely would come here again. This is a great alternative to Din Tai Fung. It was a lot of food for one person, so I recommend just ordering the XLB pieces and wontons. We ordered: - Cucumber Salad - Scallion Noodles - Tomato Beef Noodle Soup - Seven Grams XLB - Wontons in Chili Oil - Watermelon Juice (great, freshly made) I loooooved everything we had. The most pleasant surprise were the scallion noodles. Just get them!!! I would get everything again, except for the Wontons in the Chili Oil. Not because I didn't like them, but because I want to try another dumpling dish and wouldn't be able to switch out of any of the other items (and consider how much I can fit in my belly). The only feedback I have about food: the texture of the fried egg in the Tomato Beef Noodle Soup doesn't marry well with the other ingredients. It should be softer or cooked differently. Also, the sharing bowls are awkwardly shallow and very small, similar to what would you put your shabu dipping sauce in. They should get small rice bowls, so it's more enjoyable! Place was pretty packed when we arrived around 6:15 on Monday evening. Luckily, there were a couple of seats available at the bar facing the open kitchen so we didn't have to wait. Service was friendly but given they are still on soft opening mode, there's room for improvement when it comes to checking on drink and water refills and bringing the check over. We enjoyed 4 different small plates that were all delish and reasonably priced: Wonton with chili sauce - always a favorite and their version here is very good Potato string shrimp - order this! It was our first time to try and we are in love Shrimp XLB - while I prefer the crab & kurobota pork at DTF, the pork and shrimp version here is not bad Beef roll - another must order, pretty unique with thinly sliced and rolled beef, green onions, cilantro, cucumber and hoisin sauce. Think of a beef burrito that is lightly fried/browned on the outside. I wish though that their soup dumpling spoon is wider and flat (like what's on the picture at each table with instructions on how to enjoy soup dumpling). Super delicious food! I ordered takeout and they were fast, considering how busy it was on a Saturday night. I highly recommend the crab xlb - there is a lot of soup in them and the flavor was very perfect. Other restaurants have crab and pork xlb, but they never taste as rich and crabby as the ones here! The beef rolls were crispy and there was a lot of beef, cilantro, and cucumber in them. I thought the ratio was perfect. I really liked the pan-fried dumplings too, especially the fact that there was some soup in them! We finally just bit the bullet and waited an hour to get a table but we were beyond pleased with our meal. Everything was delicious! We got the golden beef noodle and the cold chili noodles. I can't tolerate spicy well so the beef noodles were definitely too spicy for me but my husband liked it a lot. I have a 4 year old and a 1.5 year old and they loved pretty much everything we got except the noodle dishes. Delicious! We loved everything we ordered. Be prepared to wait if you come at peak hours. They do have a yelp waitlist, and thankfully there are quite a few shops to browse at while you wait (85c, trader joes, petco). Here's what we ordered-- Beef rolls: nice & crispy on the outside and stuffed well on the inside. Although it was lightly fried, it did not feel oily at all. The beef was sliced thinly and the pancake outside was perfect. Xiao Long Bao: pretty good! The meat was noticeably more savory than other places, but they earned bonus points for juiciness and the thinner skin. Pan Fried Dumplings: surprisingly very juicy. The bottoms were fried nicely and these had thicker, chewier skin. The filling was fish and pork so it was a little softer & didn't feel too heavy. Tomato Beef Noodle Soup: we got this for takeout but it was still really good after being warmed up at home! The soup was rich in tomato flavor & the thin-sliced beef was soft & tender. The only thing I would have changed is a soft-boiled egg vs hard-boiled egg (mcmuffin shape). The interior had a good amount of seats and the restaurant was clean. Okay, so we've been looking all over for really good soup dumplings in Orange County. We found one in Brea, but it's far. This is closer to us and OMG so good! When we first arrived we were a little discouraged because of the amount of people outside waiting. We were hungry and didn't really want to wait a long time. On the other hand, if there is a line, it's probably good, so we put our name on the wait list... which is really cool, you can track where you are in line. The wait was about 25 minutes, so we did a little shopping at Petco and Trader Joe's in the same shopping center. Perfect timing, just as we finished up, we were ready to be seated. The décor was really nice and the place was noticeably clean. There are several individual tables and one large community seating table. That's where we were with really nice families on both sides of us. The server was very good. We waited mere seconds before we were given menus and our drink orders taken. Within a couple of minutes we had our drinks and our orders in. We expected a wait to get our food as they were very busy, but everything came out very quickly and was hot and fresh. Now to the food. We ordered 5 items from the menu and each was excellent! The soup dumplings (XLB) and spicy XLB were just what we were looking for. Their potato string shrimp was crispy and delicious. The steamed chicken dumplings were fantastic, and the ham fried rice was surprisingly good. Even with all the food we ordered and as busy as they were, we were in and out of there in 30 minutes... that's right 30 minutes from start to finish. When I got the bill my jaw hit the floor. With the price of everything so high today, I expected a much higher bill. We got out of there for $66 for 3 people, tip included. What a fantastic dining experience! We will surely be regulars here. I'm always on the hunt for good soup dumplings and theirs was fine, but what really stole the show is their Golden Prime Beef Noodle Soup - it's so flavorful and is perfectly offset with the mustard greens. The perfect balance of all the different types of flavors! I've also tried the tomato beef noodle soup (kind of tastes like a burger? but not in a bad way), their pan fried dumplings (solid), and a few other items. I couldn't be more excited to have my 100th review be for Seven Grams! I was in the area for business and found this place through a search on Yelp. I'm a sucker for dumplings and the reviews suggested I would be disappointed so I headed over to check it out. The place was packed but we didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes to be seated. We chose to sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen. Despite the fact that they placed a row of to-go bags along the top of the bar to give some privacy to the kitchen, I could still peek between the bags to see the staff meticulously preparing the food. Our server and other person (from management I assume) guided us through the small menu and helped us select a few items they are popular for. And wow...they were spot on!! We started with a dish of marinated cucumbers. They were crisp, chilled and perfectly seasoned. Next up was their Beef Roll. I saw this item being delivered to several tables so I knew we had to try it. I watched as one of the cooks rolled out each sheet of dough until it was almost paper thin. It was placed on a griddle and cooked until crispy but still pliable. Once cooked, he spread a thin layer of hoisin sauce followed by tender sliced beef and an abundance of crispy cucumber sticks along with chopped parsley and cilantro. It was rolled up and sliced into 6 pieces. It was divine! The warm crispy exterior paired perfectly with the chilled ingredients. It was one of my favorited of the night. Next up was their signature soup dumplings. We chose the basic pork dumpling and it did not disappoint. The wrapper was tender and the filling superb. Other reviewers said it was comparable or better than Din Tai Fung and I couldn't agree more. As we were slurping our soup dumplings, they brought out an order of dumplings in spicy sauce. This was our other favorite of the night! The dumplings would melt in your mouth and the sauce, while quite mild, was addictive. Once we finished off the dumplings, we were finishing off the remainder of the sauce with our spoons. I joked that I could have a bowl of that by itself. LOL! We finished off our meal with their steamed custard buns. Since they are freshly prepared, it took about 10 minutes to get them, but they were steaming hot. They looked like rounded bao buns but were filled with thick custard rather than the usual savory fillings. While they were quite good, we both agreed that there was too much bland dough though the custard was fantastic. Overall, we were beyond impressed. The place was spotlessly clean, the service was top notch, the food was delicious and the prices can't be beat. For all the food listed above, plus beverages, the entire check was under $50!! Food was much better this time around. The flavors, overall, were less sweet, though we did still have to add a bit more vinegar to our dishes to round out the flavors. The spicy pork paste noodles were good -- the flavors were well-balanced with the pickled vegetables and added chili crisp. The soup dumpling and spicy wonton skins were both super thin.
