Shaanxi Garden is my favorite restaurant IN THE WORLD. I've lived in NYC, Spain, and I'm from Miami and I've never tasted anything like it. You simply MUST try it. My boyfriend and I have brought several people and they have all agreed. I'm vegetarian and I always order the seared noodles with veggies (P01) (I think it's the only vegetarian noodle) and a vegetable, or two if I'm balling. The hand-wrapped cabbage (L02) is transcendent somehow. I love cabbage but would never think it would be the star of the show, but it just is. The dried green beans (L05) are my other fav. My boyfriend is obsessed with the walnut shrimp (J05). I haven't even tried many dishes (I come for special occasions to keep the romance alive) but the fact that it's my favorite restaurant still - as a vegetarian and having tried limited dishes - is really telling. read more

Underwhelming. We came in knowing there would be a small wait and we were fine doing so. The staff sat people who came in after us before we got our table. Our server didn't even clean off the table before telling us twice to sit down. Service was unreasonably slow, our drink orders were wrong and didn't even come with ice (odd), and the food was underwhelming. Most folk crowd Mekong for the dim sum dishes that are methodically churned out daily - almost bland and routine. But travel a 100 plus feet beyond Dobson and do not miss out on the Shaanxi Garden restaurant . The menu is vast and truly Chinese and food is great tasting and authentic. Been here a few times now. Usually I order the spicy cumin lamb with the hand ripped noodle. Never go wrong with this dish. noodles are delish. Sauce is right. Lamb portion is moderate to could be more meat range. comes with potatoes and red pepper slice, and some veggie. If you like cumin, you'll like it. Recently tried the beef tongue. Based on pic, a whole lot of jalapenos slices. Way more than what I thought there should be. So unless, you eat a ton of jalapenos, you might order this. However, the small amount of beef tongue that is present, was good. The sauce and aroma they cook with goes easily with couple bowls of rice. However, 1 person could easily finish all the beef tongue. Price is on the higher side for the specialty dishes. This place is a solid 4 stars. I've only came here twice and this was my second time tonight. The first time was 3 stars- I remembered it to be very salty to my taste (ordered the same dishes) This is my second time giving it a try and it's a 5 stars this time. Their speciality biang biang noodles are delicious. We got the cumin lamb one and it checked the boxes. Good texture and flavor. Egg rolls were also delicious. I never order egg rolls because it's usually greasy but this was perfectly crisp. The pepper beef was very good! The first time I tried it it was way too salty but this time they did it right. This is very unique restaurant. I say that because they have many dishes that I have never tried before. I wanted to try everything but settled on a special that they had for Chinese New Year. It was a lamb dish (bone in) served on a large metal bowl with warmer underneath. The flavors are not overpowering so the lamb taste came through nicely. Portion was large and had lots of potatoes, chestnuts and peppers. The gravy was nice when eaten with white rice. It was slightly oily but I think it was meant to be eaten this way. It was good and too bad they don't have this all the time. Biang Biang noodle was delicious. The noodle was in a shape of large lasagne, wide and long. The pork was slightly salty which paired nicely with the chewy noodles. It also had chopped root vegetables and bok choy. It could get messy eating the oversized noodles but fun at the same time. Just don't order this when you're on a date. Liang Pi cold noodles was also interesting. It was rice noodles served with plenty of bean sprouts and hot oil. I can see people liking this but for me it was too oily. Again, I think it was meant to be served with lots of oil. Overall, enjoyed our meal here. My experience was honestly so unnerving and disappointing. This was my second time coming in and my friend and I received terrible and concerning service. If you're a person of color please steer far away from this place. We came in, a few guests were already eating and we were ignored until we asked if we needed to seat ourselves. The waiter, in question who I attached below just motioned for us to sit with his hands and didn't acknowledge us verbally. After about ten minutes of waiting he quite literally threw the menus on our table again with no words and walked off. After that, my friend and I were waiting for 30 minutes while multiple tables came in and were sat and served at their table. At this point I was genuinely confused and when my friend attempted to tell him that we were ready to put in orders for food and drinks he literally would not speak to us and only motioned for us to come to the counter to order. The whole situation was very odd. We saw him serve multiple people at their tables but he was overtly refusing to come to ours after we had already been sitting for around 40 minutes at this point. I understand business do have the right to refuse service- but he would not even talk to us like we were human beings let alone paying customers. This is only my second time in however it will genuinely be my last. Not servicing people of color in 2024 is just absolutely insane. There's plenty of other spots in Mesa that deserve POC business and this is NOT one of them. read more

Had an extremely bad experience on my third visit here. Service was poor as usual, waited about 30 mins for an appetizer, and it's absolutely the worst I have ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant. We ordered an appetizer, two Chinese burgers, and a lamb soup. We confirmed the order with the waiter after ordering, and he forgot to place our soup order and just had us eat the dry burger until we asked again where is our soup. He answered, oh, the order was never placed as he knew we ordered but didn't let us know it was not placed. Amazing, even better than xian's famous foods in nyc. We had biang noodles, most of the chef's specials (dumplings in vinegar, pita bread with pulled pork, bread soup with beef brisket, and cold skin noodles). They were all super flavorful, spicy, and hearty. Perfect for cold winter. Great prices too. The dishes are family style so come in groups! I came here with an Asian MeetUp today. I was #4 ion the waiting list for a seating of 12 the night before, but saw 30 min after the event started at 11 am, that I had a seat at the table. Said 12 people attending. So I rished over. When I arrived there were only 5 people who showed up. even tho I came 45 min late, after everyone already ordered and they were eating. Can't believe more than half the people didn't show up. Well, I wont' be a flake. I have eaten here before but all my reviews that were from 5 years ago, just disappeared from Yelp. That old review wasn't more than 3 stars either. I found the Biang Biang noodles shockingly bland. They couldn't remember what other noodle bowls they ordered, but they all looked alike. The lamb one was pretty flavorful, compared to the others. Then there was a noodle bowl with cut up noodles, so they were like chunks of noodle bits. The chunks were chewy and satisfying, but the flavor not that great. Just OK.. I didn't like the thin noodles, they were kinda mushy. Didnt like the cold peanut noodles either, they were in the thin category. Most the noodle bowls we ordered tasted very very bland and boring to me. The grilled squid coated with spices was pretty tasty, about the only thing that was tasty. We also ordered a sauteed Chinese green vegetable, maybe ong choy. That was fairly tasty. I was the 6th person, so they charged mandatory tip at 20%. Our total bill was $132, or $22 a person including tax and tip, which I thought was very expensive for a few bowls of noodles. I forgot my phone, so didn't take anty photos, but by the time i got there, much of the food was alredy eaten, cos i got there 45 min late. I told them I didn't feel I ate $22 worth. I saw at least one other reviewer had commented "the table was sticky". Where I sat at the big round table I put my forearms on, was sticky too. Sticky tables are not uncommon in Chinese restaurants, maybe even half have sticky tables, due to their standards of cleanliness, which is why they are on Dirty Dining so often. I came try this place because my friend recommended me that this is one of the best/authentic Chinese restaurants in the valley. I was pleasantly surprised to see wide noodle dishes! I tried walnut shrimp, shrimp steam dumplings, oil seared noodles, and biang biang stir fry noodles. Walnut shrimp - I would stick with the coconut shrimp since walnut was too sweet and much for my taste. Oil seared noodles - flavor was really good but it wasn't spicy enough for me. This would be great for someone who doesn't like spicy Biang biang stir fry noodles - I think this reminded me of Xi'an Famous Foods from NYC. I would highly highly recommend this dish! read more

I've come in on a Saturday evening and they had someone playing traditional sounding live music which definitely added to the experience. Also, the service is great! I visited over the holidays on a Saturday evening double date and the four of us really enjoyed our meal. I highly recommend planning your meal for a Friday or Saturday evening as you'll get to experience live music (from a Chinese Harp) in addition to delicious, authentic Chinese food. This is a casual restaurant and best experienced family style as portions are large and I guarantee, you'll want to try as many dishes as possible! If you are looking to try some authentic Chinese cuisine that isn't your typical Asian dish, I recommend trying this restaurant. The place is just across the street from Mekong Plaza in Mesa. My family and I had dinner there the other night and we were more than impressed. The dishes are served family style, which personally is my favorite because you get to try more dishes. We ordered the pork belly, crispy chicken, spicy fish soup, house special fried rice, and the oil seared noodles with beef. All the dishes were delicious, but my favorite was the pork belly and oil seared noodles because they handmade the noodles themselves. Make sure to notify them if you do not want a dish as spicy as listed on the menu, they are able to customize the spice level. The restaurant has a great ambience and is following Covid guidelines. Really wanted to like this restaurant but after our experience, I can't say I'll be ever coming back. We ordered quite a number of dishes (including a soup) and they were all overly salty. When they came out on the table, they all lacked serving spoons and looked just a bit lack lustre, uninviting, and lacking the "look" or steaminess of a welcoming hot plate of Chinese food that one might expect). The lamb skewers were also somewhat cold when it cane out. (Also the water served with the meal was the worst I've had at any Chinese restaurant.) The service was also a bit spotty and there was only one person whose actual role was the server whereas a manager was helping sometimes but mostly standing at the bar/ counter area. Both were both nice but the server himself didn't really know much about the dishes to explain to guests and forgot a couple of key things we needed for the table. (rice, table setting, serving spoons) The worst experience was that the entire party had upset stomach in the evening and through the next morning afterwards. :( Won't comment much here except that not all the food we ordered was spicy or overly spicy so not sure what it could have been. The dipping noodles with garlic sauce are amazing...must try. A bit salty but great flavor! Also, the noodles they come with soak up the sauce perfectly. Just be careful as it may make a mess...the noodlea are extremely long so it is best to cut them a bit before attempting to dip in order to avoid splashing garlic chilli oil sauce everywhere. The noodle nuggets were very basic and bland, especially in comparison to the garlic sauce noodles. Tastes like watered down Campbell's tomato soup with pasta...I would probably skip this. The BEST NOODLES I've ever had!!! Came for pick up during lunch while working in the office so I was limited in time and I ordered the Cumin Lamb Biang Biang noodles. It did take quite a while for them to have the food ready so initially I had said I wouldn't be able to come back here for lunch but then I tasted the food and ordered it in advance the very next day lol. These are literally the best noodles I've ever had... and I love noodles! I think they're freshly made here... I don't know but that's what it tastes like. They're so thick and delicious! I love this place but you had better be a fan of spicy hot food. It's not too formal or fancy but it's comfortable for small or large groups. The food is excellent. I especially like that it is authentic, much more like food I had in China and not all bland American style. The menu often features dishes I have never seen on a menu in the US before. I went for the biang biang noodles and I think the noodles are really good. They are wider than chow fun noodles and it wasn't bad. I wish the pork was a little juicier. It was really dry. The chicken as an appetizer was pretty simple, I think it was like a fried thigh or bone-in breast and it wasn't bad. They had a sweet and sour sauce to pair it with.
