The jumbo combo is massive. Could easily split with another person. The A5 we got was pretty solid and I really liked the mushrooms as well. The broths were okay, tasted a bit watery.

My wife loved this place!! We always make it a point to come here every time we visit Boston. They have seats at the bar for single diner and tables for larger groups. Servers are great and usually pretty fast when you ask for things. But service could be little slow when they get the rush. The broth is very tasty, portions are generous and loved the variety of different combinations dishes that have. The watermelon drink is a must too!!

It's been 5 months since I had hotpot... Shabu Zen definitely satisfied my cravings! As much as we complain about their pricing, we're confident that it will never disappoint us. Please bring back $2-$3 broths! LOL

This place is one of the more popular hot pot restaurants in the Boston area. There is a small parking lot off the side street if you are lucky. The restaurant is huge with bar seating having individual pots and tables with shared pots. Service was attentive and quick. The house broth is included and any flavor is an extra charge. I got the A5 beef regular combo and it came with a choice of noodles and assorted vegetables. The udon noodles and beef were fresh and not frozen. It did give an impression of higher quality than other places. The flavor broth is really good and the portion for the regular meat combo was a good size for one person. You should get a regular combo for each person.

My favorite hot pot spot in Boston for over 15year+. We always get the kimchi broth and don katsu broth and they are both great. We end up going back because their sauces are what makes it different/special from other shabu spots. I love love love their peanut sauce (so good that i ask them for extra all the time) but their soy sauce mixed w different herbs and chili oil is amazing. If you choose a meat a plate of vegetable (napa cabbage, mushroom, corn, buckchoy, carrot and tomato comes as a default on the side) if you want extra veggies you must order it a la carte. Also included is a choice of carbs (rice, vermicelli, udon) Highly recommend their fried tofu skin and fresh tofu skin and their in house made fish paste! This place is very spacious making it great for families large and small and the staff is on point . We love that this location has parking in the back which is a plus for allston location since parking can be tough. Definitely give this place a try if you're in the area.

Forgot what cut this was but around ~$30

Parking: street parking. There may be a small lot in the back but I'm not sure since I parked on the street Service was fast and wait staff was courteous. For the price, I would have expected more meat/seafood for the two platters. It was $30 for ~15 slices of beef! It wasn't enough protein for my partner and we ended up getting an order of the lamb ($25). I will say that the beef quality was good but the seafood was just ok and they only give one mussel (see picture). Definitely recommend getting the meat over the seafood. The total cost for the meal for two people with no drinks or dessert was $160 - quite expensive for hotpot.

Best hot pot i've ever had. Our server was nice and attentive. This is the only place with good Tobiko balls!! And the quality of the meat is unbeatable for hot pot! It's a bit expensive but definitely worth it. And has free parking!!

Hot pot had high quality meat and pretty good number of side dishes. Surprisingly had no issue at all getting a table and the set up of the restaurant is pretty solid and traditionally styled. The meat was fresh and the vegetable quantity portion sizes were huge. They gave so many vegetables. You're likely to be extremely full getting your own, mostly from the broth. I recommend the Tom yum soup base which tasted quite accurate and wasn't too spicy or watered down. They come back to refill quite frequently. The music was kind of strange playing in the restaurant. Also, the service seemed to lack here and there when it came to being attentive on asking for the bill/check and a bit on wait time. But they were also quite busy. I think if you wanted to share one, you definitely could since you're likely to feel quite full quite quickly. The broth fills you up fast!

Does anything contain peanuts / can they accommodate a severe peanut allergy?

I believe nothing there contains peanuts. Also, the meat and veggies are sliced separately and brought to you to cook yourself in a pot of broth. So, as long as you're not somehow getting peanuts into the broth with the raw meat/vegetables, you're…

No. Open areas. They do have areas for small groups

How many orders would you need for four people?

Each person really should get there own entree since it's really enough for one person. An entree comes with vegetables and noodle or rice! You can order appetizers to share

The cucumber salad was seasoned perfectly and was a nice balance to the otherwise heavy meal. My favorite is probably the pork xiao long bao, but honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order. Really exciting place focused on Northwest Chinese cuisine…read more The signature dish, the hand-pulled beef noodle soup, had a fairly light, but subtle, flavor. The noodles themselves I wish were chewier (got the 'flat' but probably should have gone for 'extra wide'), and perhaps it'd been nice to have some different textures inside the soup (e.g. something crunchy). The scallions in the soup were also too wide, and needed to be sliced more thinly. The beef pancake was quite decent, though the edges didn't have enough beef and the middles had too much beef. The beef was tender, though I might have liked it more flaky. The sauce inside the pancake was somewhat unevenly applied, and a bit too sweet. I wonder if a dipping sauce (maybe a vinegar?) would have helped. The blueberry with mashed yams was fascinating. It was listed under appetizers, and wondered why the dish came out last. But the dish was a bit sweet (naturally!) and so it actually worked as a light modest dessert! The wait staff was spot on after all in putting out the dish last. The stir-fried cabbage dish was beautiful! It was appropriately crunch, yet using good wok hey. The salt level was a bit high, but the spice level was good. Their spice ratings were a bit timid to what I encounter in Szechuan restaurants (the 'regular' level seemed to be more 'mild-regular'). The stir-fried cumin potato was delicious; nicely flavored, nicely charred. Some bits were a bit oily but the cook on the potato was really neat. Will revisit!!!

The noodles were springy and cooked perfectly, though I probably would like the thick noodles better next time (they have thin, regular, thick, wide, and extra wide sizes). I ordered the non-spicy version, but it can also be ordered as mild, regular, or extra hot. With the non-spicy version, the broth was still very flavorful and meaty. You're able to add cilantro and leeks if you'd like as well, and the soup comes with some sliced thin radish in it. When the bowl arrived, the radish was a little undercooked, but by the end of the meal they had cooked decently in the hot broth. Now while I don't think I could have handled the mild version, I was happy that the tables came equipped with chili oil and vinegar, which I added to a plate and dipped my noodles in for a slight kick. I think this was perfect - since ordering a spicier version would have been too much, but the ability to add my own helped me regulate the strength and added a lot of great flavor to the noodles. The price for a bowl was $16, and that's what makes this a 4 star instead of a 5. Altogether, I was still hungry after finishing the bowl - I would have liked if there were a little more noodles or maybe some veggies included for that price. The meat was also a bit scarce, and it was a little dry as well. Still, the broth and the side of chili oil made it very tasty!

Each of the times I remembered were tasty. The ambiance when you arrive is dramatic Chinese music in the background which makes it somewhat difficult to converse with your group. Most recently we arrived with a group of 8 for our 7:30 pm reservation without any issues. All the other tables were full but we noticed the restaurant cleared out after an hour of us being there past the peak hours. They gave us 2 containers of the standalone spicy powder so people could add on as they wanted and the less spice tolerant in our group weren't saddled with the consequences. I tried the following dishes: Lamb & Beef Kebabs - 3 sticks per order I preferred the beef texture and taste over the lamb. BBQ Lamb Ribs - they said this was the only dish that came default spicy but I didn't think it was that spicy. the smoking in the raised wooden container gave it additional flavor. I preferred lamb ribs over the kebabs. Torched Beef - one of the favorites for our table the sauce with it was also super tasty. Big Squid - challenging to cut but they give a lot of pieces and generous portion with a special sauce. Grandma's juicy pork buns - on the small side, topped with black sesame and sauce you can add on the side. it was juicy as advertised. Cucumber salad - refreshing and included peanuts for texture and flavor. Fried tofu - not too memorable but the fried texture was tasty. Bok choy - I enjoyed the sauce spread across this veggie dish. Shiitake & King Oyster Mushroom - these are 2 separate orders but I can't remember which was the skewer and which was on a regular plate. Both were overall tasty. Cauliflower - Another solid veggie option but nothing too memorable if you want to focus mainly on protein. BBQ Bread slice - one of the inauthentic cuisines and it's like French toast Kaoijiu dragon yogurt- I was expecting more dragon fruit flavor so that was a bit disappointing but it still tasted good overall. So mind you, I was super surprised by this place. Clay pot rice is hard to find to begin with. Good claypot rice is a treasure. This place got my parents as my approval so that bar as high as heck. This is a definite must for those who want authentic Chinese food in Boston. We ordered their chicken with mushroom, two clay pots of frog, a vegetable one, Chinese sausage with bacon, and a preserved duck claypot rice. We had my brother's friend and my husband too so this was for a party of 6. We also ordered their sauteed lettuce, soup dumplings and their house chicken. Their house chicken is to die for. Oh my lord is it good. Their sauteed lettuce was pretty good too. The only one that fell really flat was the soup dumplings. Pretty sure they're frozen ones...and they kept ripping/sticking to the paper under them...on top of being way too close to each other that they all stuck. Um...yeah, hard pass on that next time. But the claypot rice is absolutely delicious. Add the claypot rice soy sauce and you're golden. Only thing that was different and this is more of a personal preference...less ginger? I know ginger is needed but having small planks of them showing up is a bit much. Minced maybe? Even strip to pick out is fine. But happily eating claypot rice only to bite into a piece of ginger is not so nice. The only claypot rice I didn't care much for was the preserved duck...it's not really my thing. My brother ordered it but I prefer normal roast duck to preserved. Tasted kind of weird. Still, lot of good food here. But perhaps stick to their house chicken, sauteed vegetables and their claypot rice. Skip the soup dumpling.
