The Shack is a very unique breakfast and lunch restaurant. The menu is very creative, but you can also order as basic as you'd like. The wait staff is usually very good. The place is always busy so you'll almost always have to wait at popular times. I'm a big fan of their sweet potato tots. A lot of their food combinations are too much for my taste so I usually do one of the create your own things. The portions are pretty big. They encourage you to write on the walls so sign your name and look for it when you come back. I attended a private evening function here several years ago and found it less than ideal only because of the way that the bar and dining areas are chopped up. It was difficult to socialize. Overall I like the place. It's extremely popular. If you can't find something to eat here, it's on you, not The Shack. read more

Let's get into it! I came here with a few coworkers on a business trip. This place came highly recommended by the locals. I enjoyed the vibe right upon arrival. I knew it was going to be a great place after reading the sign on the outside of the building that said "skinny people are easy to kidnap. Be safe eat bacon". Plus any place that I can write on the wall is a great bonus, lol! Cool experience. The service was great. Everyone was friendly and they made sure the refills kept coming. As for the food. Went to The Shack for lunch on Monday. There were four of us. We work nearby and called the order in ahead to save time. They really get slammed at The Shack. But Monday of this holiday week was different: no lines, empty tables, relatively quiet. We saw the hostess and she said we could pick up our order at the bar. The hostess didn't say anything about seating us. When one member of my party asked, the hostess said we had to sit at the bar. No smile, no light apology. So we went to the bar to pay, grab our food, and hope for a more reasonable answer. Nope. Ellie, who was at the bar, told us we had to sit at the bar, which was fairly crowded. No smile, very little eye contact. One of the other members of my party said that when spoken to, Ellie didn't reply. So we sat at the bar, despite their being two empty booths right behind us, and no one waiting for seats. I contemplated the order... I can see where the person on the other end of the line might assume that it was "to go," but we did not say that. I order at Panera, my food is prepared "to go." But Panera is okay with their customers sharing meals at their tables. The food was good. I had a vegetarian iteration of "I don't usually order hash browns, but when I do..." It was loaded with pico, queso blanco, and something else. She brought us waters (not sure if those were ready with our "to go" order or if they were made for us when we sat. Ellie wasn't very "present" as a server. It became a rather frowny lunch. We finished our food quickly enough and got out of there, pretty disappointed. This doesn't make sense. I can see where the person on the other end of the line might assume that it was "to go," but we did not say that. When I order at Panera my food is prepared "to go." But Panera is okay with my sitting at their tables. I know The Shack isn't Panera, but they might want to consider adopting more welcome policies. If that's your policy, Shack, consider amending it. It was hard to choose one menu item because there were so many delicious options. I chose the breakfast tacos. They came with two eggs on top with sriracha sauce on top. The perfect level of spice. Overall the tacos were delicious. The hash browns that were served with them were satisfactory. The service was effective and attentive. No complaints at all. Preface: this review is based on a visit on Father's Day....For brunch....At 11 am on Sunday. Amazing! Amazing staff, from the hostess to the bartender to the waitress. The place was PACKED and it didn't seem to phase the staff. They rolled with it and smoothly at that. As you may notice by the pictures, the decor seems to be a living aspect as patrons may continuously draw and autograph the walls, tables, and other flat surfaces. I walked in and when it was my turn, spoke with the hostess about seating - the usual procedure. Me and my friends took the table buzzer to the bar for some drinks. Every seat at the bar was full, but the bartender still saw us quickly and served us with a smile. Our wait was short considering google said the average is about an hour at that time on sundays. We hadn't even finished our drinks when the table buzzer lit up. After being seated, we were giving waters, menus, and silverware immediately. The waitress asked if we wanted to freshen our adult beverages and gave us the run down on specials. She waited the appropriate amount of time before returning to take our orders and with fresh beverages in hand. Our food came out just as quickly it seemed. Maybe it's that we were drinking and having a good time, but for such a busy restaurant on such a busy day, they certainly didn't seem to be slowed down. The food was AWESOME. I had ordered a focaccia with avocado spread, egg whites,and greens. I did add a little pepper but that's a personal taste. My friends all had ordered from the menu and loved their meals also. Like all Shacks, this one is top notch. Their food is out of this world. I always get the 'Make a grown man cry.' It is a stuffed burrito with scrambled eggs and bacon, on a bed of hash browns, topped with queso. This was one of the first restaurants I went to once things started opening again after quarantine. They were doing a great job keeping tables separated, masks were required to and from seats, servers were in masks, and tables were being extra sanitized when patrons left. There was an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill for the waiters and staff to split. I will be back. read more

So really we hadn't joined the wait list. Very frustrating and very poor customer service. Honesty is the best policy. Ms T and I stopped in for lunch since we were in Creve Coeur and this was on our way. I have had lunch at The Shack in Frontenac a couple of times, but this was her first visit. She ordered the "I Had A Salad for Lunch" and I ordered the Turkey Focaccia and a side of slaw. She really enjoyed her salad and brought half of it home. It was loaded up with a lot of good things and was very attractive. I also enjoyed half of my Turkey Focaccia and took half home. My minor complaints were that I did not realize that the turkey was almost all on the half of the sandwich I ate. The half I took home had almost none on it. They kind of put a wad of turkey on and did not spread it out. The slaw was very boring, being something they give no thought to but feel they need to have on the menu. Both items were worth ordering and I really had a hard time deciding on a sandwich. They have a lot of good sounding things. They also are known for breakfast which we rarely do, but the menu for breakfast is extensive. I would bring guests here for breakfast, for sure. Too bad they don't offer much of a beer selection for lunch but they are not trying to be a taproom. Strong three stars. read more

I've eaten here multiple times and it's always been great food. When you walk in, you're invited to sign your name or do any kind of graffiti on the walls. I haven't signed but many people have memorialized themselves on the walls. The place is always busy for brunch so make sure to add your name on the waitlist online or through yelp. The staff has always been pleasant. There is a lot of seating and I like the simple decor of the restaurant. I've had the French Toast, the 'Everything's better in Denver' omelette, the 'Me Now Hate Me Later' burrito, but my favorite are the skillets especially the 'Junk in the Trunk'. I think the Shack now dominates the STL brunch scene. I usually come here on Saturday or Sundays, prime busy time. They give you a pager, and you get to wait in their little seating area. Vibe: Be prepared, lots of kids here. Probably because they give out crowns. Looks like a big wooden shack and people can write on the walls. I didn't, because I didn't have a pen. And I saw someone already wrote my name on the wall, so I felt represented. It is clean, casual, and cozy. Pros: - Food is excellent. Last time I got a personalized omelette with short ribs, and I side of hashbrowns. Hash browns were ok, but omelette was excellent with the short ribs. I had never thought of that. They do not skimp on portion size. - Cute/sassy menu. Mimosas strong, just how I like them. I made a tactical error. The chicken and waffles is wayyyy better than the omelette. Just order this and skip the rest of the menu. Get the biscuit as a side. Cons: - It is loud! I know I go at busy times, but it is always very very loud. Also, because so many people are frequently waiting, if they seat you at the front, people waiting are like standing right next to your table. - Service is hit or miss. After a rough night, my friend and I set out to find the "best brunch in St. Louis" and Shack didn't disappoint. The menu itself is a pun-laden work of art. The restaurant is a lot of fun and the staff were wonderful. Huevos rancheros is my go-to favorite breakfast and these folks did it flawlessly. We did mimosas/Irish coffee type drink (I forget what my coffee drink was called, but damn was it good.) If I lived around here this would be a regular brunch for me. read more

Their wait list is worthless. You can refresh and refresh online and it will tell you they are not busy and will not let you join the waitlist and when you arrive will tell you 45 minutes. The food is good if you can actually get a table. Other restaurants can seem to figure the waitlist situation out, so I don't know what their problem is. read more

The walls are covered in graffiti, all the servers are wearing branded shirts with clever sayings, and all the dishes have silly names. Ok fine, but I already knew I wanted the country fried steak and it took me a ridiculously long time to find it on the menu listed with some random name that had nothing to do with the actual dish. The food was fine, but not spectacular. The steak was not gristly and was good quality, but it was so thin, I had to remove a lot of the breading to taste it. The hashbrowns were a great mix of soft and crispy as another reviewer pointed out, but they were swimming in grease to the point I couldn't eat all of them. The service was fine and it's a cool funky place. But the food was really bad. Order of scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast and crispy bacon. If the four items I ordered, not one was even decent. Watery eggs had no flavor. They were likely powdered, and bad ones at that. Hash browns were burnt. Toast was only warm bread, and the bacon was tough and not at all crispy. read more

I came in on a recommendation from another travel RN from Denver, this place was a great choice, the atmosphere was unique and eccentric, cool vibe, great friendly service, sat at the bar and enjoyed why the French hate us, basically B&G with over easy eggs and sausage patties, everything was prepared carefully, however the crispy hot hash browns were some of the best I have ever had, great coffee and was even asked if I wanted some more coffee to go? Customer service is not dead at this place. The only tough thing was the menu had too many great option forcing me to return to explore this place. A year and a half ago I moved into the neighborhood behind The Shack on Lindbergh. I was excited that I would have a great breakfast and lunch place within a five-minute walk. I found the food to be okay, not nearly as good as half & half or The Original Pancake house but cheaper and way more convenient for me, so my family and I would go every few weeks. Then COVID hit and everything shut down, as it should have, to protect workers and customers. Yes, it was no fun, but I understood how important it was to protect everyone from a global pandemic. My company made us all work from home and even paid all the cleaning staff globally even though nobody was going into the office, to keep their pay whole. This weekend I walk up to The Shack and there is a big sign on the door "SAM PAGE you are not welcome, we care too much about our employee's pay" I shook my head, took my name off the waitlist, and will never return. Brant Baldanza, if you cared so much about your employees and your customers, you would be fine with the restrictions that save our lives and would have covered your employee's pay out of your own vast wealth, as my company has done. Great local option for lunch; breakfast and lunch is served. This was my first visit and I was impressed. The walls have writing all over the walls, greetings and messages from previous guests make the place unique. I couldn't believe I had never been here before, I will return so I can try the breakfast options next time. Yes, they are plate size but the plate is HUGE as well, not a standard dinner plate. The Shack is a spot you wouldn't expect to find in the county. A scribble away wherever you want kind of spot would normally seem tacky but it somehow works. Crazy breakfast cocktails make for a fun spot with friends but plenty to do, see, and eat for families alike. I frequent it a lot with my mom who lives near by. I enjoy the skillets but often will get a build your own omelet and substitute their DELICIOUS brussels sprouts instead of the potatoes to start the day a little healthier. I love that they leave the pot of coffee on the table as I clearly have caffeine addiction issues. The service is always fast but the wait unfortunately often long. Wish they would get on the no wait game. All in all always a great breakfast spot. read more
