I love how they have a yelp waitlist. It really helps when I'm traveling across the bay for this place. My first time here and enjoyed seeing them make the noodles right in front. I arrived a couple minutes late but they were able to seat me right away. The servers were very attentive and cleared the plates away right after we were done with one just so we'd have more space on the table. We tried their famous sesame paste with handmade noodles and Shan dong prawns. It was an extra $1 for the handmade noodles and they were VERY thick. Not like wide noodles but I would say 2-3 noodle strands into one. It was very chewy and almost reminded me of eating tong yuan but with flavor. In my honest opinion, I am not too fond of the sesame paste. It seemed too salty to me and the spinach that came with the noodles were the ones that soaked up more of the salt. The prawns were shocking to me. I didn't expect them to be fried or at least not fried like carnival style. When you take a bite, you can taste and see the three layers: the outer fried layer, the middle dough, and the prawn in the very center of the piece. It was too much fried food for me that I was only able to eat a few. The sauce was good though. It tasted like the honey walnut sauce with orange sauce. Overall, this place is pretty good. This place has a big menu of Chinese classics, but the main event is definitely the hand made noodles, closely followed by the hand made dumplings. The dough for both is THICC and is a carb lovers dream. They just taste so deliciously handmade and chewy. The dumpling filling is classic pork and very tasty; not too greasy. Shandong chicken is tasty and very crispy, but comes with a ton of salty sauce that is a little overwhelming. Dry braised green beans are a tasty texture, but also a little salty. I don't get the hype. There I said it. Everyone knew of Shandong and growing up in the Bay, you've definitely heard of Shandong. Funny thing is, all of my friends and co-workers know it, but neither of my parents or anyone in their generation know it. Maybe because of this, I knew what to expect more or less. I walked in not really knowing what I wanted so I just ordered their top 3 dishes--Shandong dumplings, Shandong chicken, and the hand pulled noodles. Dumplings--not only was the skin wrap thick, but it was also very hard to bite through, which indicated lack of freshness. It also did not have the fresh pork aroma to it either. Noodles--didn't know which one to order so we asked the server for some recommendations and she offered no help by suggesting us to order what we like. So I just went with the basic Beef Hand Pulled Noodles. The noodles are super doughy. I love love love noodles, so I was really excited for this dish. But the noodles, like the dumpling wraps, were thick and hard. The noodles were okay, but the dish was SO salty. We honestly couldn't eat more than a few bites because it was just way too salty. Chicken--probably the star of the spread. Sweet, salty, tangy, crispy, and so much more. I loved that the flavors blended in very well together. Like the noodles, the chicken was also very salty. The chicken was really good, but the coating was just too thick. I wish I got more of the chicken and less batter. If you end up parking in a parking lot, it's like $8/hour. This restaurant had very good noodle dishes and dumplings. We ordered the sesame noodle and pork dumplings. The sesame noodle was very tasty, it had a sweet flavor to them. You can see a worker making the dumplings fresh in front of the shop. The hand made noodles here are delicious. Servings are huge and prices are low. They've very popular, so I recommend coming early especially if you're with a group. They serve Americanized Chinese food options in addition to their noodles and more traditional fare. The noodles aren't hand pulled but instead are made by rolling out the dough and then cutting with a knife; they're thick, doughy, chewy, and I really like them. The sesame paste noodles are the highlight, and the other dishes I tried here ranged from good to not good - in particular I think the dumplings are overhyped and the skins are way too thick. After the uptick in violent hate crimes against Asians, especially in Oakland's Chinatown, I have tried to support Asian owned businesses more. Shandong is a gem. I have been a frequent customer for almost a decade and the man upfront always great me with a "long time no see" which warms my cold heart. I have yet to meet a dish I disliked. My favorite items include: meat sauce handpulled noodles, dry braised green beans, sesame paste handpulled noodles, mu shu pork and spicy combination hp noodle soup I always bring out-of-town family and friends here and they all ask to go back on their second visit. A true hit. Pre-Covid, I loved dining in with friends and ordering a myriad of dishes to share. I had never ordered takeout prior to 2020 and was worried about how certain dishes would travel but I was craving those hand pulled noodles so I ordered and am so happy I did. I have had takeout 5+ times now and the quality has been consistent. Today, I had shandong chicken, dry braised green beans, and deluxe combination chow mein with handpulled noodles (you must specify or you will get the thin noodles). Everything travelled so well: the noodles did not bloat, the green beans and chicken did not get soggy. The workers put thought into how they pack the orders considering textures in mind. I notice they methodically leave the tab of the green bean's container open so it doesn't steam. I cannot wait to go in-person again but until then, delivery is bomb. Believe the hype b/c this spot is super legit! I'd give 4.5 stars if I could. Been here quite a few times and they are always super busy but consistent on food quality and flavor. Don't expect much for the ambiance tho as it's a hole in the wall. My favorite dishes to order are: spicy pan fried noodles with beef (+$1 for hand made noodles) 辣子炒面, shandong style dumplings 山东水饺, and dry braised string beans 干煸四季豆. The noodles are so doughy and full of flavors. The fillings of the dumplings are excellent although the skin is a bit too thick for my liking. Perhaps that's the shandong style they were referring to? I'll have to do some research on that. The green beans are cooked to perfection. One of my favorite Chinese vegetable dishes of all time. Dear Reader, Thank you for taking a moment to check this review. I had lunch today at Shan Dong, and it was not a 5 star experience. It was probably about 3 to 3.5 star experience in part because I was lucky enough for go through the door before noon and got a small private table to occupy with my dear friend Nan. It could have been less than a 3 star experience if we'd gotten their even 30 minutes later. We ordered too much food not realizing that one plate of vegetarian pulled noodles could have fed two people if we ordered nothing else except tea. It was pure comfort food in what I imagine is a very Shandong Province kind of way. I have many dear friends from Shandong, and they have in common a love of tasty comfort food that comes in significant portions. What I can say is that from this one experience I became sufficiently informed for all of my future visits. I have found ways to have a 5 star or at least a 4.5 star experience here by strictly following a specific set of rules. Here's some principles that will serve you well and may guide you to have a good if not a great experience. [1] Get to the door before 12 noon for lunch or before 6 PM if for dinner. You will otherwise be waiting outside in the weather for a table, and then you'll likely have to share it unless you are a party of 6. [2] Restrain yourself from ordering anything more than one dish per two people plus maybe an appetizer. Or order more food knowing you'll be carrying it home. One dish per per two people plus a side of rice, and I'm full. The portions are gigantic. In the future I'll expect to take food home with me because I like trying more dishes. [3] This is comfort food so restrain your expectations regarding subtle nuances and intriguing flavors. Come here because you want to be sated and because you enjoy or don't mind a very crowded setting. [4] Understand that the place is understaffed despite the initial quick service. Get an idea quickly as to what you want to try out and order it when the waitress arrives at your table unbidden. She won't be back any time soon if you need more time to make a choice. Maybe check the menu before arriving. I know this will be my strategy. [5] Make sure to follow rule #1 to get a table that fits the size of your party. Then relax and enjoy a long conversation because you remembered to put enough money in the meter to last for 2 hours. With these principles firmly in place, I believe one can have a particularly satisfying experience especially on a cool or rainy weather day when Shandong Province comfort food is your goal. Okay, no, you're right. You're thinking that I can't just rest on my noodle-laurels. I get it. Shandong is a venerable food institution. One can eat most of the popular and sought-after members of the Chinese food pantheon here, and there are a few standouts (HAND. CUT. NOODLES.) like their green beans. It is a wee, small restaurant and I find that it is much easier to get your order to go than it is to eat-in comfortably. And that's okay. Because I would walk a mile barefoot through the snow backward uphill both ways for those hand-cut noodles. The wait staff can be gruff, but they and the chef staff try to be careful with successfully navigating food allergies. If you're considering a trip to Shandong, do inquire as to whether you can order whatever you're getting with hand-cut noodles. Located in the heart of Chinatown in Oakland, Shandong Restaurant is well known for its hand pulled noodles. I have long wanted to dine here but every time I dropped by, there's always a line and long wait. Since I'm not a local resident, I can't keep on trying so I made a plan to come here before the place opens. That plan worked well as I was seated as soon as I arrived. I was handed a menu and while browsing, I was given a hot pot of tea and soon after a small bowl of hot and sour soup. As in any other Chinese restaurants, Shandong has a very extensive menu but I have already decided on the hand pulled noodles. I had Special Chow Mein which is Crispy Pan-fried noodles priced at $10.95 if you prefer regular noodles. However, for only a $1 more you get the hand pulled noodles. It's a no brainer to choose the latter. While waiting, I enjoyed my cup of tea while watching the lady at the small kitchenette by the entrance, skillfully preparing all the noodles and dumplings. My order didn't take too long to be served. It was very generous in portion. It had a few bokchoy leaves but a lot of meat underneath those noodles. The noodles was everything I hoped for. It was Chewy but soft and very flavorful. I couldn't be happier with this Fantastic noodles with sips of hot tea in between. Soon after, long lines formed upfront. I just LOVE their fresh pulled noodles here. It's always so good as it has the chewy texture that I love about fresh made noodles. They can use fresh noodles in either fried (chow mein) or in soup. I personally prefer their soup noodles. I had their mandarin beef noodle soup but forgot to take a picture as I couldn't wait . Yeah, it might not taste like the regular beef noodles but it's good if you're focusing on their noodles! The chow mein was a little too oily but that's expected. She had read that Shandong offers Housemade Noodles and they do! We arrived at 4:45 after parking two blocks away. There was a sign-up clipboard hanging on the wall outside the front door. Inside was a small crowd trying to stay warm and dry. Directly to your left is a work area with counter space where dough was being rolled out and cut with a cleaver. Against the far wall is a stove area with at least four work burners. These are the real deal. If the wok is perfectly centered on the wok ring, you'll see licks of yellow flame trying to escape. Those burners are probably 35,000 to 40,000 BTU's compared to the 18,000 BTU's that a "high heat" gas burner might push out in your home. Anyway, we missed the first seating so we were in for a wait. After about 15 minutes, the couple in front of us were asked if they were willing to share a large table. They said yes and were whisked off. About 7 minutes later, we were asked the same question and seated at the same table with the first couple. We chatted a bit with them before placing our order. We talked about what they had heard about Shandong and what we had read on Yelp. We both ordered the Sesame Noodles with House Made Noodles. We commented on how sometimes the same dish coming from the same kitchen could appear differently depending on the cook. Sure enough, ours appeared to have a lot more sauce than theirs. Go figure. Some people have said that the Shandong Dumpling filling is bland. We disagree. However, if you eat other dishes that are spicy first, the filling will seem bland. But if you eat the dumplings first, they are quite flavorful! That being said, those who complain that the skins are very thick are correct. We also ordered Dry Fried Green Beans without meat. Those were quite delicious. Nice and crunchy Now that we've tried the Sesame Noodles, we're not likely to order them again. We had ordered them as medium spicy but the flavor was just too much for us. As many have said, the noodles are thick and chewy. I'd like to try this texture again in a different flavor. Possibly with Pork and Preserved Vegetables or perhaps something close to what I know as Shanghai Thick Noodles. The description of the Lotus Chicken intrigued her but what we got was what we recognize as Lettuce Cup Chicken. Nothing special here. The sodium levels of the dishes that we ordered appeared to be quite high. As I'm writing this review, I'm sipping on a huge mug of tea. When we're near Chinatown, we'll give Shandong another try. The handmade noodles are super chewy and thick, probably some of the best handmade noodles I've had recently. 3. szechuan bean curd: 3.5/5 this is just mapo tofu LOL. i've never seen any other restaurant call it szechuan bean curd, it was a standard mapo tofu. 4. shandong chicken: 4/5 this chicken is really good! it's a little sweet, but the skin is very good and the chicken is soft! i would order this again :D 5. braised green beans: 4/5 usually green beans are nothing special, but i really liked the way they cooked these! very tasty, would definitely get again. 6. prawns with candy walnut (honey walnut prawns): 3.5/5 hmm this was okay, i feel like i've had better honey walnut prawns elsewhere. but if you like honey walnut prawns these probably won't disappoint! it just didn't stand out to me -service/wait- omg i'm so glad shandong started using YELP WAITLIST. this is a serious game changer - i only had to wait about 10 minutes when i got there instead of the 1+ hours i would've had to wait in the past. in terms of service, it was standard chinese restaurant service. my one complaint here is the bathroom smells really bad, like not porta-potty bad but there is definitely a strong urine smell :( read more

Long wait for dine in, but absolutely worth it! Join the wait list in advance. So flavorful and delicious. The hand made noodles and dumpling wraps are unmatched! The wonton noodle soup was very flavorful and hearty. The portions are huge so we definitely have leftovers for tomorrow! read more

It's wonderful. Just ate dinner here with what we thought was going to be a party of 10... then turned into 11... then 12 (due to late arrivals). Staff was very accommodating and made adjustments for our group. A mix of ages and backgrounds in our group and all left full and happy. The food is amazing. I don't think they have a bad item on the menu but I highly recommend green beans, beef chow mein, and the pork+vegetable dumplings. Noodles are made at the front of the restaurant -- I could watch those chef skills all day! The service is outstanding and the employees are worth their own paragraph. Oh no, you dropped a chopstick while being overwhelmed by the amazing food in all directions? It's okay, you don't have to ask, someone noticed and will bring you a clean set immediately! (Disclaimer: this might not happen *every* time, so you may need to ask.) It's a great place for one or two in your party, but you'll get to try more items with a larger group. It gets loud in here -- seems like they always have a full house. (To me, this is a sign of a popular & happy restaurant, but just giving you a heads up if someone in your party wants peace & quiet.) Great family business! They are quick and the food is always great. Hit list of items to get - sesame hand pulled noodles (IMO best one but all the hand pulled noods are wonderful), any and all the dumplings, eggplant, and green beans. Can't go wrong with these dishes! read more
