This was pretty close on my walk home from the subway and it had good reviews so we decided to stop in. We each ordered a combo meal. He ordered sesame chicken, pork fried rice and an egg roll. I got general tso's chicken with pork fried rice and an egg roll. They threw in a free soda as well! The total came to $21 including tax. So each combo meal was about $10 which isn't that bad! We decided to sit and wait for our food and take it home since it wasn't a long wait. It's a small restaurant but they have about 3 tables and some chairs on the side to wait for your food. We got our food in about 10/15 minutes after ordering. When we got back to my apartment the food was still hot and delicious. It was the perfect meal I was looking for. I'm a huge fan of this place. When I moved to the UES, I was appalled by the crazy-high prices of Chinese food -- lo mein for $20 is pretty standard up here. I was looking for a reliable spot for a few of my staples, like wonton soup, dumplings, young chow fried rice, chicken with eggplant, etc. After finding this place on Yelp, getting over my millennial phone anxiety, and ordering from them, I have never looked back! So I have only ever ordered delivery from this place. The menu reminds me of the old school 'hood' Chinese restaurants that I have come to know growing up in Brooklyn. As an adult, I would definitely bypass this place as it isn't much to look at from the outside. I would most likely be pretty apprehensive to dine in because of my own preconceived notions on what I imagine sanitary conditions to be like inside. All in all they are nice people. I have tried a number of dishes from this restaurant and feel confident in being able to rate them fairly. I will say that the food is affordable, average American style Chinese food, but I will also mention that unfortunately, it is pretty hit or miss. I have had: --The General Tso's chicken: Hit or miss, but MOSTLY MISS and covered in way to much breading for me that locating real CHICKEN is very difficult. This is a common issue for most Asian restaurants who cannot seem to get the ratios right. Of the 4 times I have ordered, I will say 1 time, it was pretty enjoyable and I have been yearning for it to arrive that way since, but haven't been as lucky. The fried rice is sometimes very dry as another reviewer mentioned. I attribute that to possible reheating from a previous cook-up, but I will say at least their fried rice is the color that fried rice is supposed to be, unlike other neighborhood Chinese restaurants such as Six Happiness, whose fried rice is yellow...Where they do that at? The chicken also DOES NOT contain a hint of spice and most times comes WITHOUT red chili peppers!? Authenticity check, please. So most times you are basically getting sesame chicken without the sesame seeds. --Chicken lo mien: Not particularly flavorful or chocked w veggies. --Bourbon chicken: This is definitely the worst meal that I have ever gotten delivered from them. I was feeling nostalgic and was craving that mall food court bourbon chicken and BABY, THIS WAS NOT IT. The meat was tough and old tasting and I would definitely not recommend. I hate to waste food, but that dish hit the trash w the quickness and finesse of Steph Curry hittin' a 3. --The General Tso's Tofu: I would recommend using a firmer tofu as the insides were mostly liquefied and the outside did not crisp up at all. Perhaps some cornstarch needed to be use, but aside from the tofu consistency being not great, the actual sauce that it was swimming in was so sweet that I also did not finish the dish. For those seeking a healthier option, there is still MUCH room for improvement w this dish for sure. --The Boneless spare ribs: were okay when prepared as crisp as I like them, otherwise were a bit chewy. Threw them back in my toaster oven at 350 so they could do a pseudo broil of sorts. Sweet and crispy which was fine. --Scallion pancakes: I actually really enjoy the scallion pancakes as they have always arrived crisp, albeit a bit oily, but you can come to expect that from them. Thankfully, I have never found anything w legs, someone else's hair or gotten noticeably very sick from anything. I am always very dehydrated post meal, which makes me think that MSG could definitely be a very commonly used ingredient in their food despite most restaurants shying away from its use. I would also advise those with allergy sensitivities to be aware of cross contamination as I am very sure the same oil is most likely used to fry most of their items. Though Shanghai is not as cheap as a food truck would be, it was still within budget. The boneless spare ribs tasted very much like char siu. I loved that it came with pork fried rice! The chicken eggplant was a bit bland, and the eggplant wasn't as soft as I would've liked. But the portions! For both entrees, there was so much meat/eggplant compared to rice! Very generous! The complimentary spring roll was also pretty good. We were also given 2 free drinks with our meals. The scallion pancake was underwhelming, so I wouldn't get it again. I am from the Midwest, STL to be exact and Chinese food is notorious there. In NYC it's hard to find Chinese take out that's similar to STL. This place definitely hits close to home. The shrimp fried rice is delicious and has tons of shrimp. I also ordered the crab Rangoon and even though it comes in a quantity of 8 I was able to get a smaller amount for half the price. This has become my go to Chinese takeout place. Although from the outside it may not look like much the food is of great quality and remains affordable. Service is always very quick. However if you plan to order during lunch time I do recommend calling ahead of time and placing your order since it does tend to get very busy between the hours of 12-2pm. My personal favorite is their chicken broccoli lunch combo which is a great size and always leaves me feeling satisfied.
