    Really cute and festive

When my friends from the valley & San Francisco get together, who knows how the night's gonna go. These are our tech friends so if they want drinks, drink, we will have! Well they'll have drinks. I'll just watch. This is one of those bars that decorates with dollar bills we definitely added two dollar bills with our names on them. Here's my pet peeve with bars. There's no worse smell than Fabulosa and throw up. That's exactly what this place smells like I mean it's bound to happen. I just wish they would clean with something else.

    Cheers!

No food, so no worries there! But come for the chill ambience and a great LBC dive bar vibe! Don't miss this spot if you're a local or just visiting Belmont Shore! If you're a first timer you have to shoot the root! Kristen and Gina are rockstar bartenders but everyone on the staff is killer! Street metered parking, or you can take the Circuit here and cruise around town! Also-it's super cute and decked out for the holidays currently! Great dot to watch some sports!

Small dive bar in Belmont Shore. This place has been around for over 20 plus years. Been here a few times and service is quick. We had Patron shots and glass of Snake Bite. Good prices on drinks with friendly vibes all around. There's pool tables in the back of bar for your enjoyment. We will definitely be returning!

Went here for some drinks and to play some pool. Ordered my drinks from the bartender, asked for some change and played started to play some side pocket pool. We did not come in peak time, arrived here a little after 1pm. Place was not crowded at all. Cool place to hang out. Good chill vibe. Our bartender, she was very nice. Made my wife and I feel welcomed. Only 4 stars since I did not purchase any food. I would come again.

Gina is the best! She makes an amazing "Shoot the Brew" which is cold brew, Jameson, and Guinness! So delicious! I love coming during the day because it's a chill vibe and the bartenders are so sweet and welcoming. This is a small dive bar so don't expect anything fancy. It's the most chill spot on 2nd.

    Shoot the root!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A generic dive bar mostly notable for its longevity. Back in my early 20s I used to frequent this place a lot more, and sometime in the early 90s I had my first Shoot the Root, their signature drink--a shot of root beer liqueur suspended in a lowball of Coors light. My husband and I'd ducked in here for a drink on our first date 8 years ago, after dinner at BRIX across the street (RIP), and we decided to revisit on our anniversary on a whim for old time's sake. It was a pretty quiet early weeknight--there were just a few people at the bar and at the pool table in the back. Of course I had to get a Shoot the Root (same as ever, like this bar). The hubby got a Space Dust IPA on draft. We sipped our drinks and reminisced about that first date, which was pretty epic. Our bartender was cool and the drinks were pretty cheap, but aside from nostalgia there isn't much here to compel us to return anytime soon. There are plenty more bars of this ilk much closer to us that don't involve driving. Maybe we'll be back in another 8 years.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

What I really appreciate is that sometimes it's even kid-friendly, which makes it a great option if you're not just going out solo or with friends. I've been coming around since back when it was Iguana Kelly's, and it's been cool to see how the place has evolved while still keeping that local, neighborhood feel. The location is super easy to find, right next to a donut shop and a mechanic, and across the street you've got a 7-Eleven, Subway, and a few other small spots. Plus, Tommy's Burgers and an Arco are right nearby, so everything you might need is within reach. I tried both the cucumber mixed drink and the mango mixed drink, both were really good, but I personally preferred the cucumber one. It's less sweet and way more refreshing, especially if you're not into overly sugary drinks. We also had a BBQ chicken pizza that they cook in a fire oven (I think it's called a wood-fired pizza), and it was really good, definitely worth trying if you go. Service was good During the outdoor event, they had things set up really well, including a sign that read "21 and over beyond this point only," which helped keep things organized. They also had jumpers outside for the little ones to enjoy, along with tables and chairs so everyone could hang out comfortably. Parking can be a bit tight in their lot, but there's always street parking if you take a minute to read the signs. Overall, it's a great hangout spot with a welcoming atmosphere and something happening more often than not. Definitely worth checking out.

All things considered, I'd come back to give it another try because it seems like a really solid spot otherwise, and we may have caught it on an off day.

Reservations are fairly easy to get, which make it an optimal choice if I'm looking to have a nice meal. The ambiance of Saint & Second is what sets it apart from other Belmont Shore restaurants. There's indoor seating and rooftop seating upstairs, and both areas are designed impeccably. The food menu changes every few months, which is great because it allows the chefs to experiment with new menu items, but I have been left missing past items. When I returned for the third time for my favorite hummus, I found that it was discontinued for a nice, but less tasty green hummus (which leaned more into an avocado flavor than traditional hummus flavor). Overall, if you'd like to return to Saint and Second, you should expect some changes to menu items every few months and plan accordingly. One appetizer I'd recommend is the tuna on crispy rice. This is a consistent item with great flavors that trump other tuna crispy rice dishes I've had at other restaurants. The amount of fish on this item is generous. If you are celebrating your birthday here like I did, they offer a delcious smores-flavored dessert. However, this dessert is not complimentary, and we were charged without the server informing us of the dessert's price. Overall, in terms of food, this restaurant offers a fresh array of menu items. I believe the server told us that their kitchen is a scratch kitchen, which contributes to the great quality of the food.
