I've been coming to Shaw's for a least a couple of decades. Always on my list of go to places to go when I am in Chicago. Great atmosphere and great food. However my last two visits were both hit and miss. Last year I had reservations in the dining room but was seated in the back dining room (banquet room?) by ourselves despite the main dining room having several open tables. My thought was we simply got put here because I brought my kids. This room had little vibe and we didn't get the usual attentive service being out of sight. I also thought the prices had gotten too far out of whack with the food quality. Yesterday's visit I reserved space in the bar to ensure we didn't get the back room. Much better atmosphere than the back room and the usual great service. My son ordered the broiled lobster which was perfect (but very expensive), my daughter the lobster fettuccine (also very good). My wife and I split the sushi platter. Shaw's has had sushi on the menu for quite a while but I have never ordered. The platter ($95) was more food than the two of us could finish and was very fresh, but nothing that really stood out and they didn't really vary the flavors and textures. Individually each roll was nice, collectively they all tasted similar despite visually looking distinct. We had considered ordering the seafood tower, but at $180 didn't seem like a good value. Short answer is still a fine dinner, but in the crazy expensive category. read more

Staff was rude, kept on insisting we should eat at their bar/cafeteria versus the real bar. Congratulations restaurants are having trouble and you lost about $200 to $300 in sales. Also, there were two bartenders at the bar, standing around looking lost. read more

As a starter I got the lobster bisque. It was ok but nothing special. The bisque had some type of stringy veggies in it which I thought was odd. I also didn't get any lobster remnants or chunks. As a main entree I got the shaws seafood platter. The shrimp was my favorite but only because it was doused in butter! Yum! The scallops were also pretty good and cooked nicely. The crab cake was meh. I tasted more potato then crab. For dessert we got the peach and blueberry cobbler. It was yummy but I wish that it had crust on the inside as well. Love the fresh little yeast rolls with butter they bring to the table when sit down. Bread was warm and butter was soft. The menu is quite large. They have everything from sushi, oysters, crab and fish and turf. The harvest salad was sliced up endive, pumpkin seeds, small amount of baby kale,pears with a seasoned apple cider vinegar. Salad was large so I split it with my husband. Love all the flavors and how light the salad was. Liked the pumpkin seed crust on top of the fish. Fish was light, flaky seasoned well. Loved the butternut squash purée. Buttery with a tad of sweetness to keep you wanting more. The bake potato was huge, soft and could not finish it. A great selection. Of wines and cocktails. The side are family sizes so share. We felt welcomed walking in and were acknowledged. Server Joel and asst. were polite, accommodating attentive to every need and thing. Excellent services. The building is like walking back in time from walking through a revolving door and walking on old mosaic tiles that have the initials Inlayed. walking up a flight of stairs of polished wood steps onto carpet with high top benches and small long ledges to put your drink on while you wait for your name to be called. Honestly, this would be a 3.5 for me but I'll round up! We did the Valentine's Day special for two which was a great deal for $170. Included stone crab, oysters, shrimp cocktail to start. Choice of soup or salad (came with rolls), steak and king crab for entree with truffle mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Then dessert was a choice of Keylime pie, raspberry pie, or chocolate cake. Everything was good but it's all kind of the basics for a seafood and steak restaurant. We really enjoyed the king crab but it's always good if it's quality. The steak was good but nothing mine blowing. I liked the truffle potatoes for not being a huge mashed potato person but wasn't impressed with cream spinach. The desserts were both good. Overall, it was definitely a tasty meal and a good option for a nicer restaurant but I hate spending 200+ dollars on a meal just to have it be baseline. read more

We decided to eat here after asking for recommendations from a Chicago native we met on the street. That Chicago school teacher knew where the good food was! We had three people in our party and ordered nigiri, a sushi roll, fish tacos, and a side of broccoli. We were each raving about our food and sharing it with one another because we were all so impressed with how good our food was. I have eaten at the restaurant countless times over the past thirty years. The food is always great, but the phone reception /reservationist this evening was unbelievable. I called on a pre-existing reservation and inquired about a birthday desert. I was told a cake needed to be ordered 48 hours in advance. Fair enough. I asked if there was anything else that could be provided without the advance notice - and she literally slammed the phone down and hung up. We arrived an hour early for our reservation. The service was absolutely amazing. Lots of servers, food runners, and bidders. Very cool old school vibe. I'm not a seafood fan and really enjoyed my experience. I had the Brussel sprouts as my appetizer and order three course lunch with the chopped salad, petite filet and the creme brûlée dessert. Steak was cooked perfectly and was seasoned deliciously. My friends got the shrimp tempura sushi, New England clam chowder, lobster bisque, oyster sampler, lobster roll, and lobster mac and cheese. One of the best places in Chicago, 5-star dining experience. More formal setting, not a casual restaurant, I'd recommend dressing up a little to go, makes for a nice night out. There seemed to be a team of people just waiting to serve you, glasses were never empty, plate removed as soon as you were done, very attentive staff. Food was some of the best we've ever had. Food was overpriced and underwhelming. If you want burnt steak, bland food, and bad service come here. Tried a lot of items, none impressed me. Lobster was small, overpriced, and not seasoned ($80). Shrimp was nasty farm-raised steroid shrimp with no seasoning on breading, and French fries were cold, and disgusting($30). My wife's steak was burnt so they took it off the bill($75). Best thing was the Maryland crab cake, fluffy and crispy, with a savory flavor ($17). Lobster bisque was gross, frozen lobster meat and soup had no flavor($9). Mac and cheese and Au gratin potatoes were BLAND and tasted like cream, couldn't even taste the cheese ($15 each). Worst part was the rude male manager who snatched my table, super rude! Guy just walks up pulls my table while I'm sitting at it. He could have asked me to move, I would have moved. Anyways avoid at all cost! read more

Talk about an "Old School" fish joint that just gushes Chicago Elegance in every possible way; Shaw's Crab House looks, smells and sounds like a throw-back restaurant from the 1940's! It's dark like a New York steakhouse, has wall to wall red leather booths like a italian "Red Sauce" place in Providence, RI and has uniformed waiters, that shows these nice people are restaurant pros. Mix all of these attributes together and you have one very fine eatery. Their menu has everything on it that swims. I'm not going to list them all, but one of their "favorites" here is a Lake Michigan perch that's pretty damn sensational. We also ordered the fried calamari, Tuna Tartare, the lobster roll that comes with french fries and slaw, a combination sampler plate with jumbo shrimp, scallops, filet mignon and jasmine rice and ended this extravaganza with the best raspberry pie ala mode I've ever had. A bottle of Austrian Riesling and this Wednesday night dinner went into the record books! This dinner was not cheap. Know that going in. But, in Shaw's defense, everything they used was A-One, top-of-the-line ingredients and products. Like "Eye Rolling" quality seafood. I usually end a review with "Will I Come Back"? Saturday night we went to Shaw's Crab House for restaurant week and while the food was good, I wasn't impressed. The service was very good, but that's about the only very good thing I could say. It seemed that each course was portioned out to fit the $59 dollar price (other than the dessert, that was full sized) so it didn't feel like I got bang for my buck. Like 2 oysters? Really? But even though the portions were smaller, the food itself was still good, but like I said earlier, I wouldn't put a very in front of that. The only 2 critiques I have are only having the vinegary ice mixture for the oysters and shrimp was kind of weird. A sauce to dunk my shrimp in is necessary. Then my filet was VERY rare on one side and medium rare on the other. Overall, it was my first time here so glad I tried it, but it's not worth coming for the restaurant week menu at least. read more

I had an excellent experience today it was first day out into the city we took a ride to eat oysters and celebrate my sister in laws 60th . Our waiter really went of of his way to give us excellent service. Trust me my family is not the easiest people to please. Starting with my second half he is a chef so to please him in food it has to be tops. I loved what I order the lobster bisque, oysters Rockefeller and a crab cake made just crab no fillers it was amazing for dessert I had the key lime pie since I read the reviews on Yelp about it to me it was too tangy but I had it. My friend order fish and chips and a side of Brussels sprouts they were very good. My hubby order a bone rib eye steak and the gave it to him raw he did not want it sent it back but when he got up I sent it back to be cook medium rare not raw discussing. He had one dozen oysters and a side of mash potatoes he did not like the mash potatoes so I ate some of that. We were the only family in the restaurant until almost 730ish. We had excellent service because everyone order so many oysters probably the entire staff had to help to open them. Excellent service. We went to Shaw's for dinner a couple of weeks ago to celebrate Shaw's anniversary. The food was delicious as always. They had sold out of frog legs which we had specifically set our taste buds to enjoy . Well the manager , Kristen had spoken to us. We explained that we were disappointed about not getting the frog legs. She went above and beyond to accommodate us. We were able to get the frog legs a couple of days later. Excellent service !! This is an old-fashioned looking place, with awesome food, and absolutely my favorite restaurant in Chicago as of tonight! Great food, great service, great drinks, great bartenders, great staff. Back in March this year, Shaw's was only the second meal I had at a restaurant since the start of Covid. It was strange to be inside a restaurant with no masks but having been vaccinated provided a level of comfort. That said, the restaurant itself took every precaution and I couldn't have been more satisfied. This was my first meal at Shaw's and I was greatly surprised since for some reason I went in with low expectations. I was just happy to be meeting some friends and dining out in a long time. The diners at our table ordered a lot of different menu items and everything was delicious, well seasoned and cooked just right including the lobster Mac-n-cheese, the crab cake, oyster Rockefeller while I personally got the fish of the day. The fish was cooked just right and came with a side (apologies, since I forget on what the two were since a lot of time has passed and I didn't take pictures). Wow, great character and fabulous food. This is an old style "steakhouse" but fish-forward. I would put this in the same class as Mortons or Ruth's Chriss (and yes Shaws also has steak). I had the halibut and totally enjoyed it, my friends both had steaks. The appetizers were fantastic (try the buffalo shrimp) The atmosphere is the most beautiful part. We came with a big group and more people joined and the staff was nice and understanding. The food was pretty good, we caught the limited time Lobster fest. I really enjoyed the lobster bisque. The Lobster Wellington was really talked up but I thought it was ok. I appreciate the skill in making it but I couldn't taste any truffle and stayed, the spinach overwhelmed it. As you can see from my prior review the last time I ate here was for dinner pre-COVID. This is my first time to return here for a nice family of 4 lunch post-COVID. We had a reservation, but, the place was not busy. I started with a Floridita with milagro repasado tequila, wild berry, lime, and sparkling wine for $16. Then I changed to their Spring old fashioned with very old barton bourbon, aperol, brovo orange, and angostura for $14, which tasted stronger. We also shared and enjoyed some lobster mac and cheese. I enjoyed my seafood combination. Service here was again above average. We agreed that this continues to be one of our top favorites in the city. Oh have things changed. My Viognier no longer offered by the glass even though it's the perfect wine to go with oysters that are served in the Oyster Bar. Arturo, my fav bartender passed away (RIP ARTURO), And the whole ambience of the bar has changed. He was the life of the party of that bar. Greeted everyone with a huge smile, joked around with you and had fun. No one behind the bar like that now. It was all business. No live Blues in the corner, and the music was at such a low volume that you could barely hear it. We asked three different people if they could turn it up and they said "..some folks don't like it."... Well then those folks need to sit in the dining room. For dinner last night, we dined at Shaw's Crab House. I was a little confused by the vibe here at first because it appeared more like a diner upon first entry and to the right was the oyster bar. However, we turned left to our table and were immediately immersed in a more upscale atmosphere, with dressed-up diners and dim lighting set for the mood. We had a four-course dinner, which I was very excited about, and included complimentary bread, always a plus. For the first course, we ordered the tuna tartare and the crab cake. The tuna was very fresh and served atop mashed avocado, which made the entire dish a nice refreshing start. However, the crab cake was the tiniest crab cake I had ever seen! It was about the size of a flattened golf ball. Though the crab cake had a great flavor, the size was a little disappointing and really threw us off. For our second course, we got the clam chowder. The chowder was rich and thick, but not overly so, and it was the perfect amount for a second course. My only complaint is that I wish there were more clam bits in my bowl, but the dish itself was satisfying. The entrees we opted for were the twin filets with garlic shrimp and the swordfish. The filets were juicy, and the shrimp was akin to lobster with the way it was drowned in butter, which I loved. The similarity of the shrimp to lobster made the dish feel more elevated as well. As for the swordfish, though the seasoning was unique with an Asian citrus flair and a side slaw, I thought the tang didn't pair as well with the swordfish as a different flavor might, so I would say I enjoyed the filets more. We ended our meal with the chocolate cake. At first, I was hesitant to order this because I can get cake anywhere, but boy am I glad I went for it because it was heavenly! The dark chocolate frosting and moist interior were to die for. A little large after having eaten three other courses, but you can bet I didn't leave a crumb on that plate. read more

Sorry. I do not get it. This place is raved about by locals and business colleagues. Food was good. Service was good. Bar is well appointed with whiskeys and bourbons. Food? Meh. I was at a table for eight and no dinner was overwhelming. None were bad, but walking out with a tab of nearly $100/person...it should be more than meh. Loud environment, too. They used to have live bands. I would go and recommend it if there was live entertainment. There was none. No regrets if you go, but given the foodie scene in Chicago, I would sample other venues. read more

First time here and didn't realize it was rather formal (and pricey!). Visited for my birthday with my 3 girlfriends. We were there for almost 3 hours and had a great time. We had a great server named Paul. He was friendly and funny. He recommended a couple of dishes to us - both of which were very good. I ordered the Halibut and it was delicious, and cooked perfectly. My friend ordered the parmesan-crusted haddock. It was also quite good. Another note on the service - We ordered dessert and Paul, our server, brought it out with a lit candle. The biggest disappointment is paying so much for lunch I got the lobster mac and cheese 4 tiny pieces not even chunks of lobster.
