First time trying Polly's coffee beans this week as I was looking for a cheaper option from my usual Lord Windsor $20/lb coffee I usually buy. I don't think I will ever buy anyone elses beans again now that I've tried Polly's. Walking into the shop, I could feel this place had a history. As I started looking at the huge wooden display of beans, I was immediately helped by someone behind the counter. This employee taught me about the different beans they had and even let me sample some coffee, which I'm so glad because the decaf l wanted was really bitter. Instead, she hooked me up with La Minita, a lightly roasted bean that tastes incredible and a seasonal chocolate Irish cream. She told me they don't use artificial flavoring, they use oils, so when something is flavored, you are really tasting through your nose. Buy your beans here, they're really good and there's a huge variety to choose from. read more

Very cute little coffee shop on trendy second street jn the Belmont Shores area of Long Beach. Tiny interior and a large outside patio glassed in to minimize wind and noise. Good people watching. Interior is small and the couch area was busy with a retired group of men. Tiny two person tables. Outside lots of seating but it can be cold and windy. They have a nice selection of pastries. Polly's is a 2nd street staple that supplies *very* good freshly roasted coffee for numerous restaurants around Long Beach. It's also a popular pit stop for many local faces and competitive biking teams, so there is a certain sentimentality about it in the community. However...as a coffee shop/cafe, this place is a poorly run dump. Staff is mostly nice, definitely a few stand-outs on the team I wouldn't want to slight, but several are strangely and similarly aloof, perhaps due to inexperience, and to a large degree certainly due to a lack of training in customer service. Training in preparation is unfortunately the bare minimum, so quality is hit or miss. Don't bother with the cold brew or a tea, no one cares. And you don't have to sit inside on a dirty couch for more than an hour to see customers walking out the door empty handed. Hang out past three and it's a constant stream of lost customers due to a dearth of sustenance. Management deems the buckets of muffin mix they've been incessantly buying for the last 15 years as sufficient and unimpeachable, and if there are any left at the end of the day it's obviously because there weren't enough customers to buy the delicious tired treats. Meanwhile Philz, and Starbucks, and The Coffee Bean, and Agua, and Portofino, the library, and so many others in LB are HAPPY to have Polly's business. Tl;dr: Best place to buy your beans, worst place to buy a cup of joe. Response to Ren D.: Ren, the only employee I'm experiencing poor service with is you...someone I have never seen at Polly's despite being a customer for years. Your employees don't wear name tags nor provide their names. The fact that you would even ask me to name an employee exposes the crux of the problem - management is clueless and absent. read more

I'm remiss to give bad reviews just for STUPID store policies because it negates what otherwise would have been a mostly positive review. But I believe when places give you reasons for not wanting to go back they rightly deserve negative reviews. Such was the case recently at Sheldrakes. After avoiding this place for several years because it looked uninviting, unappealing and unclean I finally gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised that the fresh roasted coffee surpassed my expectations and was a decent cup of coffee although the place was still: uninviting, unappealing and unclean. In a subsequent visit I tried the Kona (I love a good cup of Kona) pour over and while the first few sips were decent it quickly became bitter and I was unable to finish it. On my third (and final) visit I once again had the dark roast drip and it was again a good cup of coffee. Here's the STUPID policy part that lead to this review and my decision NOT to return. When I was ready to leave I tried to use the bathroom and was informed by another one of the unpleasant employees (who mostly all appear to want to be anywhere else but working at Sheldrake's) that the restroom was not available to the public. This, while not really a smart business policy for your customers who have many choices for good coffee places would have been fine with this answer, but without missing a beat this sad, little officious drone employee asked me if I knew "Mike"? Apparently if you come in off the street and don't buy a damn thing but you know Mike you can use the bathroom but not paying customers! With dozens of great coffee house choices in the neighborhood do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Otherwise, 2 Stars for decent coffee. read more

Nice place to get some coffee and it would have been more enjoyable if the interior had been cleaned or cared for a bit more. Also, I was underwhelmed by the lackluster, hipster man bun guy who served the coffee. My experience with the service was more as though I was an inconvenience to the staff than a customer. It seems like it's a side show to the main roaster operation that occupies the back (apparently roasts coffee for the Pollys Pies restaurants in socal.) I believe they should hire some staff that are more into customers/patron experience and less about there own politics and personal lifestyle view points. This coffee shop makes me want to come live in Long Beach. I LOVE everything about it. The coffee, the music, the baristas, the old school, warm, inviting ambiance and even the patrons. Great place to really come relax and take your time sipping on your drink. The owner is awesome! hes always around chatting with customers. I think that makes such a difference and I love seeing him. Most importantly the coffee at Polly's is SUPERIOR (as is everything else). A definite 5 star! read more

Polly's is a unique and friendly coffee shop woth an outdoor patio that is shaded in the morning and has umbrellas for the mid day sun, and a heater for the cooler evenings. I loved the ice coffee and water you can grab at your leisure. New favorite place to come when I'm in Long Beach! read more

I can't believe its about 10 years since I posted my review of Polly's. When Mike Sheldrake, the owner and head raconteur is in house, he'll introduce me to any and all as Polly's first customer, to which I reply "That's because all the others have died." We buy all our coffee here, and when I do show up I'll get the cranberry nut muffin. I say that as I drive past the newly opened Starbucks within walking distance from my home. In February when I needed a rehab hospital I picked Alamitos Belmont because it was close enough to Polly's so that my wife could bring me a Polly's latte when she came to visit. Trying to get away from L.A. my significant other and I fell into Long Beach and popped into Buffalo Exchange next door. While perusing, a very chipper Anne started to chat with me and after exchanging phone numbers she told me that she worked at the coffee shop, Polly's next-door and that I should come in for a coffee and she'd make it worth my while. Now I'm normally down to oblige to the offer of mostly anything but I had just had a smoothie from Jamba Juice and couldn't imagine putting java on top of Jamba. Therefore I kindly declined it but I promised her I would return. Fast-forward almost a month later and my work takes me back to Long Beach. I immediately think of Anne and figured since I knocked out work two hours earlier than scheduled what better time on a warm day to get an iced coffee or tea. Upon walking in to Polly's I was greeted with a warm hug and the rich smell of freshly roasted coffee wafting in my nose. Flags lined the wall from many countries. Multitudes of regulars were greeted kindly. Anne asked me what I'd like and since I'm rather unconventional I opted for the chai latte. Let's just say this: ANNE KILLED IT!! Literally the best chai latte I've had in my life!! Even iced it did not get diluted or unappealing. Each time I step foot in Polly's, I feel as if i've just entered a log cabin and suddenly transported myself to another part of california... maybe big sur. The fresh ground aromas emitted from their old-time roaster are one of a kind and are enough to bring any reasonable person back for more. This is definitely one of my favorite establishments in long beach. In addition to the multitude of corporate coffee shops already existing on 2nd st, "Its a Grind" is now taking a seat at the opposite end next to Peet's. But you know what? Polly's will keep on truckin' simply because they are the one and only Polly's coffee in the world! Everyone's nice, the coffee is great, and there's always a fair share of indoor and outdoor seating readily available. I like to get my school work done here, and the WIFI works just fine, as long as you don't mind listening to the occasional regular spill their guts to the employees for hours at a time (i usually just relocate outside when this happens). However, overhearing the owner explain to curious customers the complexity of coffee brewing/storing/roasting is quite amazing, and informative. This guy really knows his beans! read more

It's located inside the 3-gate Terminal 1 at LGB, in between The Boathouse restaurant and a CNBC store with books and souvenirs and more snack food. Not a bad coffee shop. Cafe mocha was good, chocolate croissant was great as well. Even though the line was long enough, it was moving pretty fast! Heat oven to 350°F. Separate dough into 8 triangles. Place tablespoon of chocolate chips on wide end of each triangle. Roll up, starting at shortest side of triangle, rolling to opposite point. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F. for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. read more

When you think of Long Beach, you think of small business and you want to support the local economy. Nothing resonates this more than Polly's coffee, as its neighbors include Coffee Bean, Starbucks (x2), and Pete's. Why would you go to one of the other places when you have this excellent option before you? My most recent trip to Polly's was specifically to buy a pound of good coffee for my mom, who is usually pretty picky about things. I walked in there to see it buzzing with patrons but made my way to all the coffee options adnd immediately realizing that I didn't know where to begin. Although the guy behind the counter was super busy he gladly answered my many questions while busily filling and grinding coffee for another customer. It was actually another gentleman how ultimately took my order but he, too, was very courteous and knowledgable. Both reassured me this was the best coffee I could get based on the description I gave them. What I loved about this place is that sense of 'small town' community that you don't always find, especially at chains. While waiting, I noticed two people who had ordered something that Polly's actually ran out of. The mgr came to them at the couch and handed them their coffees and told them it was on the house and apologized for any incovenience. Most other places wouldn't have bothered to care- they would have charged you for something that wasn't on the top of your list. I love everything about Polly's, and in case you're wondering, the La Minita Costa Rican coffee, which was recommended, was a hit for Christmas! EXCELLENT! read more

I really wanted to like this place after the high praise it was given in an L.A magazine. There are definitely some good aspects, like the outdoor seating, the ocean breeze and the attached albeit small parking lot. But my drink was less than underwhelming. It was just your basic medium latte, but the taste of espresso was almost undetectable. It tasted like a cup of foamy milk. The time of my visit was about 2:00 in the afternoon. There were almost no customers there, which is hard to know whether that's a stroke of luck or a red flag. The case of baked goods was almost empty, and the three or four items still there looked dry. In fact one was all crumbly and unappetizing looking and I couldn't believe it was still in the display case. Service was very quick. In retrospect I wish they'd taken more time to do the drinks right. It's possible we caught them on an off day. I might be willing to try the place again if I'm ever in the area. read more

Came in to get a pound of Italian Roast Ground fine for espresso. Going on a 10 day trip and need it for the mocha pot. Friendly staff, great latte and Uber cool roasters ambiance. Great local coffee spot and cheaper than Starbucks! They are one of the few places in Belmont Shore with a free parking lot. I got a spot in both Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you are lucky they will be roasting beans when you go in.... Smells heavenly! What I've tried: Macadamia Nut cafe au lait: nice mild flavor, not too sweet Capaccino Royal: best thing here! It's made with steamed chocolate milk. Banana Mocha: blended and delicious Black Velvet: blended with chocolate covered espresso beans. Very strong and not too sweet, good for a cool down treat. Iced Coffee: sweetened with milk, vanilla and powdered sugar plus a large is only $2.90!! What a steal and so good! read more

Pollys definitely has a great location both at the main terminal and also past baggage. I however did not enjoy their coffee which is what this review is for only. Coffee was priced a bit high which is typical for spots located in the airport so this is to be expected. The flavor of the coffee was bad. Taste was stale and weak. This was not a drip coffee I ordered so even the flavor of mocha did not mask its' taste. Unfortunately for me, this coffee was quickly thrown out. read more

For a smaller local airport, this coffee spot is right on in delivering caffeine to those choosing to hit the airport early. It is like a Starbuck's but without the price tag or special selections. Rather, simple coffee and espresso drinks. Their baked items looked pretty good so I purchased their cinnamon twist, which was more like a cinnamon cake. I love having a local coffee spot for when I have errands on 2nd Street. I love asking the barista to give me which ever coffee was brewed most recently. This is a hot or miss habit. As long as I get a heavy pour of milk I'm good, but the coffee can have a strong burned after taste. Again, depends on the day and coffee choice. I love the smell when they are roasting the coffee beans while I'm there. The muffins are typically pretty good. read more

This is a nice spot for coffee. I wasn't super impressed with the two coffees I had, a Kona and an Americano, but that was more due to my flavor preferences than the store. People all seemed to be ordering their Ethiopian, which likely means I should have done the same. The space is very comfortable and they have pastries and other things to snack on. They roast coffee on site, which is a rarity for most of LA outside of a few specialty houses and the big names. Polly's is an essential part of Long Beach and an Essential coffee business that should be around for hundreds of years if possible. They have amazing coffee and incredibly fair pricing. There's no fluff, no filler. It's one of my favorite places to go in the neighborhood. They aren't here to price gouge like the other big names you find on every corner. When I get near the building and smell the coffee I just get so happy! I know I'm about to have a tasty cup of coffee and get a nice buzz from it!
