    Lunch Nigiri sushi set (2nd)
    Jun X.

After hiking around Pacifica and Devil's Slide area in the morning, we drove down the coast to Half Moon Bay for some leisure stroll down Main Street. My wife suddenly craved for a bowl of hot ramen so she picked this Japanese restaurant and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Inside was quite spacious and neatly decorated. We were seated quickly by a smiling waitress. My wife ended up ordering a Udon soup. It arrived in a cast iron bowl topped with two pieces of shrimp tempura. She said it was exactly what she needed. I ordered nigiri sushi lunch set that came with sides of Japanese salad and miso soup. For ~$18, the Nigiri set served 9 handsome looking pieces which my wife could not resist to have a few. We went on to order another set and thoroughly enjoyed it :) with cool draft beers

Wonderful big beautiful clean restaurant. Had an amazing dinner, a few being on the happy hour menu. Our favorite roll was the iguana roll with the mild delicious sauce and wedge of lemon. Chefs kiss! Very attentive service and food came quickly.

I know I'm not sharing rocket science here, but just because two restaurants sit next to each other in a shopping center doesn't mean they offer the same quality. Yes, it's hard to believe I don't get paid for that depth of wisdom. I had a very good meal at Monsoon (review: https://yelp.to/X4DtB6NGbI), but my takeout order at the Japanese restaurant next door was honestly marginal. Having walked a good chunk of the coastal trail, I was pretty hungry when I placed my order. I went for the $22.50 Curry Katsu Donburi which for no apparent reason, was shaped like a heart. The pork was on the tough side, and the curry was rather watery (photo: https://yelp.to/idtTlfgvY8). It didn't come across as much of a valentine to me. However, I was pleased with the House Salad (photo: https://yelp.to/J5sAPS8AXy). To their credit, it was an abundant serving and lightly dressed. It was frankly the only part of my meal that wasn't disappointing. I couldn't say the same with the woefully overpriced $10.25 Chicken Yakitori (photo: https://yelp.to/66V5FPrGXv). It consisted of two skewers, and the poultry tasted dried out like it was under the warmer too long. Maybe an in-house dining experience would've made a difference. FOOD - 3 stars...I give them points for the salad, but the rest of the food was meh AMBIANCE - n/a...I made a takeout order so I can't really say SERVICE - 3 stars...not much interaction really TOTAL - 3 stars...I'll just say it was middling RELATED - Exploring the peninsula south of San Francisco? In the area and craving sushi. Overall good experience. The restaurant was busy and customers were happy. We ordered the Lion King sushi, the unagi roll (bbq eel rolled like a cone), udon noodles with chicken. The food had some amazing flavors. The noodles were tender and delicious. I asked for some hot seasoning and was given a small bottle with some kind of seasoning salt which was nice and spicy, the Lion king sushi pieces were larger than expected, and the unagi cone was good but different. The restaurant had some cool vibes.

Shiki in Half Moon Bay is located in Stone Pine Center. We were greeted quickly, seated and drink orders taken. The Honey Crunch Roll is phenomenal, honey walnuts, crab meat and tempura shrimp with a house sauce. We chose a booth, counter seating is also available. As a local Shiki is my choice for quality Japanese food on the coast.

I was very happy with the sushi here. I came in with a big party, and we were seated quickly, and we're served immediately. The food did not take long to get to us, and it was pretty good, too. The best part about Shiki is the service. They are all so nice and friendly and really help you to feel welcome. Inside the decor is quite beautiful and the tables are striking, they are decorated with classic Japanese art depicting battles or fishing trips. I just had a great meal and time overall here. Parking is easy, too.

This was our first time eating here, but my hubby had read reviews and looked at the menu, and we decided it looked like a great place for lunch. We loved that we could sit outside and look at the water. Our server was very friendly and spaced our courses out perfectly. We started with the cheesy artichoke cakes. We both really enjoyed these, and would order them again. We then split a bowl of artichoke soup. So delicious. Hubby said he would try and recreate this for us at home. Then for our entrees we each had salads. Hubby had the Caesar salad with blackened chicken and blackened prawns. I had the roasted beet and arugula salad. We were offered complementary bread that looked amazing- but we declined because we were trying to watch our carbs. On the back on the menu explained the history of the restaurant. Make sure to check out all the historical photos inside before you leave. We will definitely be back again to try some more wonderful things from the menu.

It's omakase and everyone is served the same course at the same time. With only one waitstaff, this can be a bit slow. So plan for long stretches in between courses. This gave us the time to chitchat and catch up, which we loved. . But if you are looking for an "efficient" meal, don't come here!! Each course was perfectly balanced, displayed and portioned. The dishware themselves are all unique and precious looking, adding to the experience. Portion size was perfect such that you feel satiated but not overly stuffed. Perfect. The space itself is small, intimate, and quaint, making it a cozy spot for some skewers and drinks. I ordered a large bottle of Sapporo and greatly appreciated that it came with a chilled glass. The tako wasabi was also good and is one of my favorite things to pair with an ice-cold beer. The mentaiko udon was satisfying, although I thought it tasted much more like kimchi than mentaiko. Luckily, I enjoy kimchi, so I still liked the dish, but it might be disappointing for anyone expecting that richer, briny mentaiko flavor to come through. I'd honestly consider renaming the dish or making the description a little clearer to avoid confusion. The skewers came out relatively quickly, and most were enjoyable, although there were definitely a few hits and misses. Surprisingly, the ribeye was tastier than the wagyu skewer, which leaned a little dry. The chicken skin was solid, though not quite as crispy as I've had elsewhere. The scallop was easily one of my favorites--it was tender, perfectly seasoned, and delicious. I would've happily ordered a few more if I had room. The tsukune, unfortunately, was pretty dry and plain, even after dipping it into the egg yolk, so that's one I'd probably skip next time. Overall, not every skewer was a winner, but there were enough standouts to make it a satisfying late-night meal. The cozy atmosphere, cold beer, quick service, and convenient late hours make this a spot I'd happily return to after a late flight. A solid 4/5 for me--although getting off a long and stressful flight may have made me a little more forgiving too, haha.
