I don't usually post reviews but I felt this was necessary as this was the worst experience I have ever experienced at a restaurant and I am a pretty tolerant person. My friend and I visited Half Moon Bay this past weekend and once seated we were given two glasses over water that had white things floating in it and the glasses were very dirty. My wine glass came with multiple lipstick marks on it and the server saw this but did not bring us clean glasses nor any silverware. It was as if they did not wash their dishes at all. The food itself was not great and when we asked for dessert we were told how good it was but that we were not able to order any because they were getting ready to close at 4pm. Even though we had been there for about a half an hour eating. On the way out, the chef at the sushi bar was flossing his teeth. Overall impression was just a really gross place with an unmotivated staff. It makes me wonder how the back of the restaurant is or how clean everything else is. After hiking around Pacifica and Devil's Slide area in the morning, we drove down the coast to Half Moon Bay for some leisure stroll down Main Street. My wife suddenly craved for a bowl of hot ramen so she picked this Japanese restaurant and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Inside was quite spacious and neatly decorated. We were seated quickly by a smiling waitress. My wife ended up ordering a Udon soup. It arrived in a cast iron bowl topped with two pieces of shrimp tempura. She said it was exactly what she needed. I ordered nigiri sushi lunch set that came with sides of Japanese salad and miso soup. For ~$18, the Nigiri set served 9 handsome looking pieces which my wife could not resist to have a few. I've been in the customer service industry for a long time . I was the only one in the restaurant and all the employees were talking and laughing with each other while i sit there for 10+ minutes waiting to be served . I finally had to raise my hand to get there attention . I didnt give the waitress a tip because of the terrible service . And she had the gull to ask for a tip !!!!!!!!!!! Yes, it's hard to believe I don't get paid for that depth of wisdom. Having walked a good chunk of the coastal trail, I was pretty hungry when I placed my order. I went for the $22.50 Curry Katsu Donburi which for no apparent reason, was shaped like a heart. In the area and craving sushi. Overall good experience. The restaurant was busy and customers were happy. We ordered the Lion King sushi, the unagi roll (bbq eel rolled like a cone), udon noodles with chicken. The food had some amazing flavors. The noodles were tender and delicious. I asked for some hot seasoning and was given a small bottle with some kind of seasoning salt which was nice and spicy, the Lion king sushi pieces were larger than expected, and the unagi cone was good but different. I rarely leave reviews, but the way my son and I were treated today was unacceptable. We went in for lunch and the restaurant was not busy. We ordered, ate there, and even purchased additional food to go. After paying the bill, I selected "No tip" on the card reader because I intended to tip in cash when our server returned. While we were waiting for our to-go order, another staff member (who was not our server) picked up the receipt and came back to our table loudly demanding that we leave a tip. She stated that we "needed to tip" and that "people always tip." When I calmly asked if tipping was mandatory, she walked away speaking under her breath and continued making comments, including in another language. This created a very uncomfortable situation, especially in front of my teenage son. Our actual server was kind and professional, and when she returned, I asked her for change and gave her a generous cash tip. Unfortunately, the behavior of the other staff member completely overshadowed what could have been a pleasant experience. Tipping is customary, but it is not mandatory and it should never be demanded, especially by someone who was not even serving our table. The confrontation was unnecessary, inappropriate, and embarrassing. I hope management addresses this, because no guest (especially a parent dining with their child) should feel pressured or publicly confronted over a tip. read more

Half Moon Bay has an amazing assortment of little restaurants for such a tiny town. Shiki is a new favorite of mine. The Red Evil roll we had as an appetizer was fabulous and fresh. The best part about Shiki is the service. They are all so nice and friendly and really help you to feel welcome. The fish here tastes incredibly fresh. If you are into raw fish and more traditional sushi, it's worth ordering some of the nigiri or sashimi options. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! Giant, thick pieces of gorgeous fresh salmon!) - Sparkling Umeshu (Tasty and refreshing!) The prices are pretty standard for sushi but you get THICK pieces of fish so it feels very worth the cost! My friend got a Sashimi bowl and each piece of fish was fresh, thick and delicious. Since we came pretty late in the evening they even threw in some extra at no charge. They seemed to be short staffed during our visit, but the ambience is lovely so we didn't mind hanging out and sipping our Sparkling Umeshu while waiting for our food. Shiki Japanese Restaurant was recommended to us by a Half Moon Bay local while we were visiting this past February. I am so glad we decided to drop in. Lately I've been craving the Asian flavors and sushi so this stop really hit the spot. We stopped in fairly early in the evening, around 5:00. We were warmly greeted when we walked in and seated immediately. The restaurant appears clean and the service was very good. We perused the menu and decided to order a small plate and a couple of rolls. We decided on the Grilled Asparagus Beef, tender ribeye wrapped around crisp asparagus spears topped with sesame seeds and a teriyaki sauce, the Shrimp Tempura Hand Roll, shrimp tempura and crab with avocado and cucumber and Tuna Heaven, spicy tuna with tempura crisps inside topped with seared tuna with spicy mayo, tempura crisps, green onion, sesame seeds and the house sauce. We were offered plenty of wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. We finished off everything between the two of us and it was plenty of food to fill us up for the rest of the night. Prices were reasonable. I was pretty shocked tbh! My favorite sushi rolls so far in a looooong time! Definitely try the Golden Scallops roll. The scallops themselves were fresh and perfectly cooked. The blend of flavors was just right, with like a sweet teriyaki yup of flavor, and absolutely no need for soy sauce! Just about equally so, the Tuna Heaven, mmm. It had this light sweet with spicy sauce to it, which also didn't require dipping. Not to mention, the tuna was seared! Oh man, what a perfect combo of flavors. We also ordered agadashi (tofu) and an Unagi roll, which both were light and tasty fillers. I would definitely come here again, and recommend it if you're near and craving sushi. I was craving sushi and a local recommended this restaurant to me. It's beautiful inside, there's a nice bar and wood interior. I had hamachi and maguro nigiri, and the sushi was light and delicious. There was some kind of green pepper garnish on the hamachi that wasn't a great surprise, but otherwise everything was fantastic. Service was attentive and prompt. OVERALL: Every Shiki is just okay. It's very consistent but never amazing. Average price for sushi around here. FOOD: Like mentioned, their food is okay. It's always the same, you get what you expect. This time however, my shrimp tempura roll tasted fishy. Never a good sign from a sushi restaurant. I didn't finish it. I also ordered tempura that was cold and not so crispy by the time we got home (but that's probably my own fault for ordering an item that doesn't transport well - just be aware if you're getting take-out). Their food is priced average but charging over $3 for a can of coke is insane. SERVICE: My friend ordered our food online. That's pretty easy to do. We picked up quickly and it was ready when we arrived. Their text-when-ready service is not accurate though. We left about 20 minutes after we ordered and the food was ready.
