With my hubby's friends gathering, they picked Shining Garden for dinner this time. It's located on Broadway and Nanaimo Street which busy intersection. This small place really lack of parking spot and no other parking lot nearby. It looked like family owned restaurant and services were lacking. We ordered some dishes and just ok. Dry scallops with pea sprouts - The portion was generous and pea sprouts were good. Bitter melon with beef - Taste good and bitter melon just cooked perfectly. Soy sauce chicken - The chicken so bland and served as cold plate Stir fired fish stomach with eggs - Fish stomach was a bit dry and eggs were over cooked. Steamed halibut with black bean sauce - It's a bit fishy Deep fried pork chops - It's good but not outstanding. Lamb in clay pot - It's big clay pot with a lot of lamb meats. Luffa with shrimp - It's simple but good. The prices are super reasonable ($12-16) a dish and their food is OK. Worth for casual dinner if you don't expect the quality of dish. read more

I considered myself lucky when compare with Beverly T as when I entered at 7:15pm on Boxing Day with no reservation, I was seated in no time and the food was served hot on the table within 10 minutes. The dining room is 90% full. By the time I leave I felt so content.... Actually my one word to describe SGR is DECENT! In terms of price, service, taste & the ambience. We stopped by for lunch and was happy with our meal. Food was not too salty or full of MSG. I ordered wonton noodle soup for $6 and it included a drink. I decided to pay an extra 50 cents for a cold drink option. Wontons were a mixture of pork and shrimp. My lemon tea tasted as what I would expect. Overall, portion size was good for the price. Service was minimal. Our server dropped off menus and tea, took our order and then dropped off the food. There were specials that were written in Chinese. I know the restaurant is catering to the fluent Chinese population. However, I would appreciate if restaurants offered an English translated version so that everyone will be able to order the same items. At least I was eating with someone who can read the menu for me :). Four stars for the lunch specials. It is nice to enjoy a meal under $10 that is not fast food. read more

Would definitely return! This is a low key spot that has delicious Cantonese food and reasonable prices. In terms of 'ambience' the restaurant is fairly small, very clean, and service was good. Also for being a Canto spot this place isn't too loud and you're not bumping chairs with your neighbour beside you. We had the lobster with noodles, ginger chicken, curry beef brisket, and pea shoots with scallop. Everything was really good, especially the chicken. Solid 3.5 stars, 4 stars for ambience, given its East Van location. this place has gone through a few name changes/owners, who really knows. Was fortunate to snack with the managers for their special staff menu, not available on the regular menu. Some type of bitter lemon, not too sure how to describe it, but good nonetheless. Just not sure if it's something to jump at returning but for the area, with its white table cloth, can be considered nicer, upper casual dining with matching prices. Free parking in front, limited spots as there's several other restaurants in the same mini-strip. read more

This spot was previously Ming Dynasty Cuisine. They've been opened for about a month now (according to the employee) so we gave them a try. The setting seemed brighter and cleaner than Ming Dynasty, which are both welcomed changes (always thought Ming Dynasty was kind of filthy). Their food selection is typical of a Hong Kong style restaurant and the quality was so-so, nothing to really write home about. The service was pretty good so that is a definite plus. There isn't a lot of competition around the area, so they should do fine as long as they can up their food quality. I will give them a couple more tries before I come to a final conclusion. They deserve 3 stars right now because it was a decent experience, but nothing memorable. read more

Had lunch with the family here on Sunday. We got an assortment of rice and noodle dishes from the lunch menu. Seasoning and flavours met our expectations and the portions were rather generous. Overall, great value and food. Service was fine. We did not have any issues. I quite enjoyed the milk tea, but it could use a bit more milk and not as much ice. The lemon tea was on point. If going in groups of 8+, I would highly recommend calling to make reservations in advance as the restaurant is not very big. I recall the largest round table was able to accommodate the eight of us. Pro-tip: Parking on the street is free, but watch out for the signs for valid parking times. There is parking in the back and out front, but often it is full. read more

This place sucks. Most shittiest service i have ever experienced. All of the servers including the boss lady herself is so unorganized. Its my moms birthday and she wanted to just eat something simple nearby. My family has been here before but its my first time (and will definitely be my last!) We made reservations for 7. Got here at 650 and its 745, we just sat down. I had to go up to complain 3 times before we actually sat down. If they cant take in that many tables they should not say yes to every reservation that calls in. 3 other groups that got here ahead of us had the same issue. I understand the pricing of food here is inexpensive but you can go to another restaurant like this and get better service. Unless you dont mind waiting for an hour even when you made reservations. Very average Chinese food. The service is typical of any Cantonese style restaurant and that means no service if you don't know them well. The prices are quite high compared to other restaurants of this calibre. Would not come back as there are plenty of other options that has better food, price, service and quantity. read more

Prices are reasonable and the serving sizes are good. I don't leave there feeling like I had too much sodium. We had fresh tilapia and fresh lobster as well as roasted pork, free range steamed chicken with ginger and onion, fresh vegetables and awesome fried rice. I always like coming here. read more
