Ahhhh I got fooled by the Yelpers on this one. But, given the dearth of Middle Eastern/Afghan/Mediterranean compared to southern SF Bay Aarea, I guess it can be understandable... We ordered the Kafka which is suppose to be seasoned ground beef (sometimes ground lamb?--I forget), but it definitely was lifeless...No salt flavor, no cumin flavor. The shish combo plate...I've never seen "yellow" short grain rice. I think the place went cheap and opted for normal rice. Using short grain, the rice tasted wet and not flavorful. Finally, the yogurt dip. We had to ask for it. What we were provided with was some thick concoction that did not flow smoothly or enhance the flavor of the meats. The hummus side dish was the only thing that was delicious. American fries were also nice and crispy. But, I'm not a vegetarian and I came for the 'shish'.... Overall, not cheap either. Almost same pricing as the more expensive SF Bay Area. read more

Came here for dinner with a friend last week and really enjoyed it! I attend a church just down the street on Alcosta and am grateful that there's a solid Lebanese restaurant so close by. Making Sunday lunch plans just got so much easier. The menu is pretty straightforward; here's what we got: for him - 1. Shish Tawook: Skinless kebobs of chicken breast, marinated in our specially selected seasoning served with our Shish specialty garlic sauce - $12 + fountain soda - $2 for me - 10. Hummus Shewarma: Garbanzo bean dip, blended with garlic, lemon juice & sesame cream (tahini) sauce, topped with beef shewarma - $12 + a can of Chabaa mango nectar with fruit bits - $3 He opted for rice and salad with his order, and I opted for salad with mine (because I ordered the hummus shewarma, it came with a side of pita bread instead of rice). You place your order and pay at the front register, and they also ask for your name. My friend and I sat at a table for four near the left wall so that we could have enough room to play bananagrams (laugh if you want to, but it's tradition for us whenever we meet up). Halfway through our meal, I realized that this was probably not the most considerate decision. Shish Grill filled up pretty quickly at around 7:15 PM, and we should have just seated ourselves for two instead of taking over another table. Definitely won't do that again. One of the staff members (possibly the owner's son?) came by with our order and verified my name (Iona!). I read through some of the reviews and was kind of confused because I heard other people talking about disposable plates and utensils, while I'm prettyyy sure we used real metal cutlery and (at least) melamine plates. I eventually found the review response where the owner, Nancy, promised to switch - and she did! They give a really generous amount of salad as a side - cucumbers, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and some red onions in a light, but still flavorful sauce. My friend cleaned his plate and since I wasn't feeling super hungry that night, and he had a Spartan race to carb load for, I asked for help with mine. We both agreed that the hummus was delicious and paired well with the pita bread (of course). As for the beef shewarma, it was really, really good. Very tender, very well marinated, cooked perfectly. The same staff member who dropped off our order came by midway through to see if we needed anything, but we were fine. Later on, as we finished up on our game of bananagrams, the owner, Nancy, came to see if we were doing alright. I told her that the food was great, but that I thought I was going to lose. She laughed and assured me that women always win. A-(wo)MEN. Lol. I still had half a plate of food left so she asked if I needed a box. I told her yes, and when she came back, she even offered to pack it for me. I appreciated her kindness, but I knew I could take care of it after I won (hehe). She just smiled and came back with a plastic bag for me. True to her statement, I won... by two tiles. Thanks, Nancy, for working so hard to make Shish Grill such a great place. I love the daily specials on the menu because I'm telling you they are a RARE treat to find as they are traditional dishes that you simply won't find on a menu anywhere. They take a little more time to prepare but are absolutely worth the wait. Chef Nancy is a delight and really cares about the quality of the food she prepares. Wish I could give this place more stars :) Felt like middle eastern food and decided give Shish Grill a try. Ordered take out and was not disappointed. Usually take outs are not the same as what they bring on a plate at the restaurant - portions look smaller, or it's a mess. Shish Grill packed the boxes just like it would be on a plate - appealing, big and most importantly DELICIOUS. What was ordered: Sambusik (oh...OH....I could eat them like candy, the dough is home made and is a flaky goodness, and they come with that "secret weapon" sauce :P Spinach pie (delicious dough and stuffing, my son inhaled them with sauce they come with and he doesn't even like spinach) Falafel Sandwich Souvlaki chicken sandwich AND Spicy chicken entree (oh my god, truly "Chef's Favorite" as it states on the menu. I chose 'mild" and enjoyed every bite. The rice has amazing flavor. I usually don't care for rice but this rice I really enjoyed) Loved the food so much that next day ordered from Shish Grill again LOL I had to have more Sambusik and tried Shish Combo plate. Meat marinated and grilled to perfection,tender and delicious, cucumber,tomato and parsley side salad is a great complement to the meat as pieces of grilled bell pepper and onion. I just cannot say enough! I think we order from this amazing restaurant once a week at a minimum. From the first day we walked in until now, they have not disappointed. Their ability to share the beauty of their culture through food is their special gift. Not only are you welcomed as if you walked into their home, they take the time to remember their customers. Having moved from the east coast to California, I always look to try new food and share in other cultures. This became a little family because I felt as if my love of their food was truly appreciated as all great small businesses do. One of our vendors caters from here everytime they visit with a sales pitch... needless to say they are one of my favorites :) I LOVE this place. Even though they typically don't deliver to Walnut Creek, they do it for us and I'm so greatful for it. Everything tastes so great to me. My favorite place for baba ganoush, laired with their pita bread that is always warm and homey. I could probabaly eat that alone for the rest of my life. SO GOOD YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. Their rice is always so buttery fantastic with all the aromas. And their falafel sandwiches are always perfect, never dry. Even day old leftovers (I always end up taking the all the veggie stuff home yay) taste surprisingly amazing after a simple heat up. So Ive eaten authentic home cooked Lebanese meals and don't expect a restaurant to match that level of home cooking. Shish grill impressed me! I ate the shish kebab , with the fatoush ( Lebanese salad) , and the spinach pie and washed it down with their apple malt drink ! It was delicious!!!!!I'm coming back for sure! This is what I have been waiting for! I love lebanese food and was so happy that this place came to town! I ate here with a take out last night for my family and this place is amazing! Their Kibbeh is delcious, authentic and flavored perfect. We also ordered their fresh Falafel (which is to die for!) Their hummus (also fresh made, flavorful, and creamy!) their Kufta kebob (perfectly seasoned and tasty!) Dolmas (delcious) and their Chicken Kebob which has lots of flavor too! The place is a small cafe style with tables and a homey / cozy feel. They are next to OSH in San Ramon. The lady that was cooking I assume was the owner and she was so sweet. I decided to try something new today, since I usually don't get Mediterranean food, and saw that Shish Grill had some great reviews. I'm so glad I came here because I absolutely LOVED this place! I ordered the Shish Tawook, which also came with a choice of lentil soup or salad. I chose the soup, and it was absolutely delicious. The creamy garlic sauce that comes with the meal was heavenly; I drizzled it over the rice and chicken. The rice was cooked just right- not too hard and not too soft. The chicken was full of flavor, and the blend of the chicken with the rice and garlic sauce made the meal delectable and delicious! read more

Love having a new place in town that gets good reviews. I came in a few weeks ago and placed an order "to go". After mulling over the menu, I was not sure what came with what, how to order exactly so I ended up over-ordering. I went at a bit of an off time so the restaurant wasn't busy. For such a new place, I guess I expected the people working to be a bit more helpful/friendly since this is an order at the counter place. They have no drink machine, only bottle drinks of Pepsi products. i was able to tell that they do not have "true Gyros"- just the meat that is cooked on the grill which is disappointing since there is no other place like this in San Ramon. Fat Mattie's has grilled Gyro meat too. The 3 platters I ordered took about 20 minutes all together to be put together. Getting them home and opening the containers, sadly, I noticed that there were a lot of redundancies and had I been steered correctly could have and would have done some different ordering. There was nothing that sung out but it was mostly decent. I will say I was disappointed in the falafel as they were dry, dense and lacked flavor. The hummus was decent as were the chicken kabobs but again, nothing was very memorable. I hope that as this place flourishes (again, nothing like it in the area), they will find their footing with service and better food. I had higher expectations due to the other reviews, so maybe it was an "off" day. Definitely worth another try but not until I have a hankering for this type of food and don't want to drive to WC or Pleasanton. read more

I just got back from having dinner at this place. I'm often looking for my next great Mediterranean spot anywhere but out here. Far too often I find that places in the burbs cater to the pallet of people who are satisfied with mediocrity. Perhaps this is due to families and hectic lifestyle. However, I'm a bit more discriminating. First off, I stuck with a med staple and just had their Gyro (Beef/Lamb) and Baklava and must say both were very good. On my next visit I'll try something else on the menu. Also I was quite impressed about clean the place was and how accommodating and pleasant the owner is. One can tell she is stoked about this place opening (they are only in a soft opening at the moment). They will succeed due to their good food and attitude! I've been eagerly waiting for a Mediterranean restaurant serving kabobs, shawarma and falafel to brighten up the tepid food scene in San Ramon. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a sign for a place called Shish Grill that was 'now hiring' and 'opening soon' and couldn't wait to try it out. While my BF and I were visiting a local store today, we saw the restaurant was open and, without hesitation, we stepped in to check it out. It turns out, they just opened today, and we were their second customers. The restaurant is your typical fast casual type place, where you place your order at the front, and they bring the food to your table. Not surprising, the staff was new, so they weren't extremely knowledgeable about the ingredients in the food, but they were eager to learn and, if we had questions, made sure they provided us with answers. The staff were all very friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed and were happy with our food. The menu consists of a variety of kabobs (chicken, kafta, lamb), as well as shawarma, gyros, wraps and other Middle Eastern fare. We ordered a Shish Combo Plate (with lamb, kafta and chicken), which came with salad and either soup or rice, and the Hummus Shawarma (beef), as well as a side of falafel. All of the meats were extremely tender, juicy and flavorful, and the saffron rice was cooked to perfection. My personal favorite was the Hummus Shawarma. The beef was tender with a unique and tasty spice profile, and the hummus was nothing short of sublime; creamy with just a hint of citrus. The falafel were crispy on the outside and soft and pillowy on the inside, just as they should be. To top everything off, the waiter gave us each a complementary cup of the lentil soup, which was also very tasty and another sign that this restaurant is eager to please. It's so nice to see a different flavor profile hit the restaurant scene in San Ramon, and to get off on such a strong foot. I wish much success to Shish Grill, and plan to become a regular. If future visits are anything like our visit today, I have no doubt they will develop a loyal customer base in San Ramon. read more

I love Shish! It's a small place kind of tucked away. I admit that when it first opened I was reluctant to explore. I didn't connect the name Shish was short for shish kabob. I finally gave it a try, and I haven't looked back since. The owner Nancy is very sweet, hard working and has an infectious smile. She is very meticulous about her restaurant. I almost always order the Shish Kabob meal. I get it with lamb cooked medium. It also comes with a yellow Lebanese rice and a choice of soup or salad. I always choose lentil soup. It's very yummy! The lamb also comes with a wonderful garlic sauce. The lamb is seasoned to perfection and always tender. I've also had the stuffed grape leaves, hummus and baba ghanouj. They are also great! She also makes home made baklava that is TO DIE FOR! Nancy puts her special take on it. My grandma was from the mediterranean, so I grew up on home made stuffed grape leaves, lentils and baklava and the food at Shish stands up nicely to grandma's. RIP grandma.
