We had heard about this place a lot from friends, we wanted to try it for a while. We were able to get a reservation for a weekend dinner a week in advance. We highly recommend planning ahead for this one. The reservation for 4 was for 90 minutes. The place is small, cozy and has cute decor. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. We ordered drinks to start off - lemonade, a pineapple drink, mango juice and sake. For starters we got shishito peppers and panko-crusted bean curds. Drinks were good, peppers were average, bean curds were good. For mains we ordered 4 specialty rolls - body and soul, open invitation, secret weapon and missing piece - and the okra nigiri. All specialty rolls were very tasty and very well made. You can't go wrong with any of them! I'd skip the nigiri so you have more appetite for the specialties The wait staff was very helpful and patient and explained all the dishes to us when we said it was our first time visiting. The food is brought out very fast izakaya style. I'd definitely recommend this place and will be visiting again myself!

Boddy & Soul was amazing. Also ordered the candlestick and secret weapon. Delish. Service was great and good selection of wine and na drinks. Yum!!!

Shizen never fails to impress. I've been here multiple times, and it's one of my favorite places to bring friends and family when they're visiting from out of town. What I love most is the variety of options. Whether you're in the mood for nigiri, sushi rolls, or ramen, there's something for everyone. The creativity and attention to detail in each dish make every visit enjoyable. Ratings: * Nigiri: 10/10 * Sushi: 9/10 * Ramen: 8/10 * Service: 9/10 * Ambiance: 9/10 Consistently great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Shizen remains one of my go-to spots and is always on my list when hosting out-of-town gue

Came to try out this place with a couple friends! One of my friends has been here a few times and recommends it! We got gyoza and three of the specialty rolls to share! All were very delicious and I love that everything here is vegetarian/vegan. The service was very good as well and I loved the ambiance! The servers came to check up on us often. The restaurant itself does have limited seating, but they also take reservations through Yelp! Overall, definitely a fun and fresh dining experience, and I'd come again to try new dishes!!

Luckily I got reservations for Valentine's Day! Shizen was absolutely DELICIOUS. I loved everything- the service, the ambiance, the food, drinks. I've been wanting to try this place out for a minute and it did not disappoint. The Boddy and Soul was probably my favorite, but you literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I also highlighted the other sushi that we ordered. It was so good and I think I'll definitely be back!

Very good vegan sushi! The rolls were super tasty and similar to normal speciality sushi rolls. The proud peacock was similar to a rainbow roll and the variety of toppings were all very refreshing. Boddy and soul resembled a fire cracker roll - this was a group fave. The mushroom platter was also pretty good. I thought the agedashi tofu could use a lighter batter. the nigiris were probably the only items i feel were furthest from actual sushi but were still tasty in their own way.

Wow. No expectations, but we were blown away! Delicious for non-vegans and gluten free alike. The candlestick roll was the table's favorite. The secret weapon was *hot* be warned. Make sure to snag a reservation well in advance.

Today I visited Shizen SF, came right at 5pm and got lucky to get in with no wait, even without reservation (but honestly you prob should book ahead, this place gets packed fast). Shizen is a 100% vegan sushi spot and Michelin guided. I used to have a very great dining experience at Tane Vegan Izakaya in Palo Alto (another vegan sushi spot), so I just knew this place would hit! And I'm not wrong!!! I'm having a coffee date later so I only ordered two rolls: Candlestick and Boddy & Soul. Candlestick came out with a whole fire presentation, I was surprised and almost forgot to film. The roll had spicy tofu, cucumber, avocado, seaweed pearls, shichimi, and it tasted just like California roll no joke! I was shocked! (I mean it's not 100% alike but definitely around 80-90%) Boddy & Soul is recommended by staff. It's one of the most ordered item and I totally get the hype. The roll has tempura spicy tofu, green onion, sesame, spicy aioli, sweet soy. It's crunchy and the sauce was super flavorful, even better than some regular sushi I've ever had. You have to try it!!!!! Honestly I'd go back again multiple times just for this roll. Overall vibe was nice, service was good, food came pretty quick too. I'm not a vegan but I really enjoyed this place and for sure it converted me into a regular now!

Shizen sushi bar located at San Francisco. They are famous for their vegan food. They have amazing menu with varieties of sushi options available. If you are vegetarian and want to try sushi, i would highly recommend this place to you. They have pretty good ambiance with fast service.

Very cute restaurant with fully vegan menu! I love trying out vegan sushi places and this one is incredible. Service was prompt and our waitress was very kind. Would definitely come back

The perfect evening! Reservations through the Yelp app for dinner at 6:15 pm. Free Sunday parking right across the street. Christy the amazing Manager and hostess welcoming us so warmly and seating us 18 minutes before our reservation time. Wonderful, attentive and prompt service from our server Alan( extra ginger - twice, the birthday dessert surprise, great suggestions). Beautiful food - lovely mushrooms, best Miso soup ever, surprise ending with the shot of sake in the middle, Brussels sprouts , a smooth Shizen lemonade and wonderful hot tea. The freshly prepared red bean donuts were to die for. Best seats in the house. Shizen the upscale, recent Michelin star recipient was a unique, fun, delicious and memorable experience.

I'm not vegan but have heard great things about shizen so I was super excited to try it! I made a reservation ahead of time so we were sat immediately once we got there. Super cute vibes inside with plenty of tables for 2 and 4 inside. We ordered boddy and soul, open invitation and missing piece for rolls and tempura vegetables on the side. All of the rolls were fun to try but my favorite was definitely missing piece. The mango added a tangy flavor to the roll and I loved the texture of the mushrooms. I found the other two rolls a bit mushy and thick, which makes sense given they were made from vegetables, but wasn't my preferred texture and made it hard to enjoy after trying one of each. The tempura vegetables were pretty standard (but yummy) and I loved the vegan ice cream we ordered at the end! Not a huge fan of mochi pastries but loved that it was all dairy free :) Overall I was impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the creativity of the chefs! not sure if I'd come back but definitely glad I tried it!!

    Emily F.

Made a res but wasn't busy when we arrived. We got seated right away and service was great. We tried some drinks, nigiri, several rolls, and dessert. It's cute inside and sorta unsuspecting from the outside. Nigiri was prob our favorite. The rolls were great and creative. We loved the veggie ones more than any that had tofu. Maybe the texture with the rolls threw us off a bit or something. Drinks were refreshing and dessert was so so. The mochi with red bean wasn't too sweet and had great texture. We didn't love the ice cream texture but flavor was good. It was nice to check out Shizen and a great vegan restaurant.

Yes they have high chair seating.

Do they have tables for greater than 4 people? Thinking about going with 6 people total.

Yes, they usually make 6 people table by joining 3 tables.

If I want to eat alone (party of 1) on a Friday night, should I expect a reasonable wait for bar seating or am I better off making a reservation for a table for 1?

Any of the items in their sushi menu served with cooked vegetables?

Yes - quite a few use cooked vegetables. I would say more are cooked than raw.

Do you guys offer Jain or no-onion no-garlic food?

Am sure they can, I avoid those and never have a problem, they will work with you.

Are there gluten and soy free options? Unfortunately I have issues with both. Please let me know which may be okay as I'd LOVE to come for a meal. Thanks!

There are a LOT of gf options, clearly marked on the menus. I was not looking for soy free, so I didn't notice. Email them. They were super helpful to me via email!

Would they take photos of IDs and Covid Vaccine Cards instead of physical copies for Dine-in?

    Yes

Is there a parklet or other outdoor seating?

there was one outdoor table when I went there, but it was on a sidewalk

Do they still do the online waitlist?

No, they are reservation only and offer limited seating times

Do they accept digital covid vaccine records?

    Yes. With your license.

    Are most menu items nut-free?

Yes! I have a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and their menu had little-to no nuts.

Delivery or work with a delivery app service?

No, they offer pick up or dine in only!

Do they only have white rice? Some places have black rice, brown rice, or quinoa options. My friend's blood sugar spikes from white rice.

    I only saw white.

What are the best rolls here going to order for first time?

Hidden Agenda, Boddy and Soul, Secret Weapon (spicy), Proud Peacock. But if any of them are calling your name they are all delicious!

Is the menu completely vegan? I see they hav aoli options and I just want to make sure it does not contain actual mayonnaise.

Yes, the menu is 100% vegan...down to the vegan aoli

Is Shizen open for takeout during shelter-in-place? I could really go for some now...

    Unfortunately no.

Is Shizen doing takeout right now or anyone know if there will be eventually?

Sorry, we live in Seattle and have no idea.

Has anyone actually ever reserved a table online? I see stated on the Shizen website that "We offer very limited online reservations and hold the majority of tables for walk ins", but I cannot find even 1 table for 1 person for 2 months in advance.

Yes, you can reserve a table ... so far I was able to make reservation only at 5pm

We stood in the front with multiple workers seeing us, but wasn't acknowledged for a full five minutes (it's completely empty). We're seated and figured they would allow us to start happy hour because it was from 5-6pm (which, what a short HH!) and we ordered around 4:50pm. Nope. Waitress took out her phone and denied it. Okay.... Waited an extra ten AND THEN ordered food. Got the nigiri sampler and added the uni and toro. That was a mistake, because for a whole $20 addtl., the sampler was so lackluster. The tamago was oddly colored and the rice was... chewy? We left the crab one because... unsure what kind of frozen crab that was. Meanwhile, this whole time we're waiting for our HH drinks while other people are receiving theres. Mind you, we ordered first. Also, I ordered a Sapporo which was a CAN. Had to bother multiple staff to get my can. Also... $5 HH special from regular $7 price? Idk... We also ordered the HH karaage and gyoza which came with a curry sauce that wasn't too bad, and some agadashi tofu that I actually liked. Ordered the chicken skins or Tori Kawa, and those were mediocre. Tried to order more HH items but the wait staff almost completely ignored us. Soon enough, HH is over! Worst happy hour experience ever. Never coming back to this place and recommend others to find another spot for sushi since there's waaayyyyy better spots in the city than this.

We lucked out without a reservation and showed up the moment they opened. However, I noticed this place has A LOT of reservations; therefore, they did give us a time limit (we had a good hour and 30 mins!). If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience, Rintaro is definitely worth checking out. I've been to Japan before, and actually felt like the food we ate was just as good as what you would get in Japan, but more expensive, haha. I also love that their menu focuses on traditional Japanese izakaya dishes rather than just sushi. Everything is meant to be shared, making it a fun dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything. FOOD: 9/10 SERVICE: 9/10 AMBIANCE: 10/10 FOOD: 9/10 The food really showcases the craftsmanship that goes into Japanese cooking. From the handmade udon to the charcoal-grilled skewers that we ordered, every dish felt thoughtfully prepared. I especially appreciated that nothing felt overly complicated. The flavors were simple, balanced, and let the quality of the ingredients shine. The only reason I'm giving it a 9 instead of a perfect 10 is that a few dishes didn't completely wow me for the price, but overall it was a fantastic meal. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions or offer recommendations. The restaurant gets busy, but service still felt attentive throughout the meal without making us feel rushed. They do recommend ordering everything at once, as they do run out of things due to the high volume of customers. AMBIANCE: 10/10 The first thing that stood out to me was the ambiance. From the moment you walk in, the warm wood interior, open kitchen, and charcoal grill make you feel like you've stepped into Japan. It has such a cozy and intimate atmosphere that's perfect for a date night or catching up with friends. Rintaro is definitely more of a special occasion spot than an everyday dinner. The quality is there, but because the menu is made up of small plates, the bill can add up pretty quickly. That said, I think it's worth experiencing at least once if you're looking for an authentic izakaya in San Francisco. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The atmosphere alone makes it memorable, and I love that Rintaro focuses on traditional Japanese comfort food instead of being another sushi restaurant. We went on a Monday night and were surprised that there was still over an hour wait, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you can. Thankfully, we were able to grab some drinks while we waited. The Yuzu Chu-Hi was probably my favorite drink of the night, it was light, refreshing, and easy to drink. For food, we started with the Teba No Karaage, which had a perfectly crispy exterior and juicy, flavorful meat. We also ordered the San Ten Mori, and the fish was very fresh. We especially enjoyed the yuzu wasabi that came with the dish, which added a nice kick and complemented the fish really well. We also tried the Chiizu Tori Katsu. The chicken itself was juicy, but I wished both the chicken and the cheese had a little more flavor. Most of the flavor came from the sauce on the side. I was also a bit disappointed by the snowy cabbage dressing, although that may just be because I'm used to the dressing being on the sweeter side. One thing that really stood out was the warm and welcoming service. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back to try the skewers next time.

Yes, it's an izakaya, but we found ourselves struggling to continue eating the plates since it felt so heavy. Sure, maybe we didn't order the right stuff, but lots of the menu items are deep fried, stir-fried, or grilled also. We enjoyed the cumin lamb skewers and the negitoro the best! We were disappointed in the truffle poppers as each bite was more filled with fried breading than mushrooms. The dessert was beautiful and we did enjoy that. We ended up paying like 100pp including tax and tip. There are many Japanese izakayas I can pay less for in San Francisco including a la carte at Rintaro! What sets this place apart from other AYCE spots is the variety. It's not just sushi. You can also order appetizers, salmon, teriyaki chicken and more, so there's something for people who want to mix it up beyond rolls. Delicious, easy, affordable and in the neighborhood. Highly recommend!

They have an impressive…read moreselection of specialty rolls, nigiri, and appetizers that make it easy to try a little bit of everything. On our most recent visit, we ordered several specialty rolls topped with seared fish, creamy sauces, and tobiko. You MUST try the Lion King Roll- our go to order. Beyond the sushi, we got miso soup, which is comforting and a nice palate cleanser, crunchy seaweed salad, hamachi carpaccio which was fresh and deserved a re-order, and poke chips which are a light and addictive appetizer. You can skip the chicken karaage to be honest, but the butter corn is a surprisingly sweet side that rounds out the meal perfectly. You have a two hour time window to dine, and you can order thru an iPad. Yoki gets quite busy so sometimes there were long gaps between orders. Depends on which day of the week you decide to visit. They're able to seat large parties and I have come here for intimate dates to birthday dinner of up to 8 people. This time we visited with a party of four and had to wait a bit before being seated. That said, Yoki remains my first choice whenever I'm craving best-value AYCE sushi

I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy.. It was defintely hard for the person to hear a bit when they picked up. The staff did relay something about gluten free noodles.. Anyways, they said they could swap out any of the soy soups for salt (but soy can encompass a lot of things so I still wasn't feeling super confident but we're going to give it a go). We go and I asked which 4 of the soups I was eyeballing don't have soy - the staff said they can accomodate and replace any of the soy soups with a salt broth. After we ordered, the staff came back and checked in to make sure that my partner also didn't have an allergy. And my dish came out, they told me there was no egg as its marinated in soy - perfect to me. I'm glad that was caught as not every establishments can account for everything. - Now I have a spot to (more safely) eat ramen! - I advise that if you do have an food allergy, do talk to the staff, and address your concerns such as cross contamination etc. I had a great experience, but I do find that because its not so regulated or understood and there is lack of education amongst the food/resturant industry - you always need to advocate for yourself and there is always a risk. I'm very apperciative of the staff here.

Okonomoyaki tater tots - 8.5/10 from a potato lover!! This does have some sort of cheese on it so beware if you don't eat it Hamachi Hand Roll - 9/10 SO GOOD. I think the rice is mixed in with soy sauce. It was super flavorful which I wasn't expecting Scallop Hand Roll - 8/10, the yuzu on top was absolutely delicious & scallop was very soft. Kobe Skewer - 7/10, it was good but nothing extraordinary. It'll hit the spot if you like meat skewers Yuzu Tori Skewer - 7/10, same as the kobe skewer, but the yuzu on top was delicious Niku Ramen - 8/10, good portion & very very flavorful. I'm glad that they gave a lot of meat in this. I shared this & they provided an extra bowl without me asking :) It's also not super spicy. Hokkaido Milk Pudding - 8/10, the pudding itself was so good but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. However, my partner has a sweet tooth and loved it :) Will totally come again, everything was so yummy and so glad to have tried it!

The center literally was a bar and I could tell it was meant as a nighttime eatery. Their menu is composed pretty much of some izakaya type items and yakitori. I ordered only yakitori. The skewers were a bit pricey- 5-9$ each. But the quality was really good. Chicken heart and thigh were ultra juicy. Beef tongue was so soft and tender. Meat ball was ultra soft. Loved everything- no misses. Really surprised me. I highly recommend folks stop by for the skewers. Other than price I have no gripes at all! Just be prepared for the wait- with an empty restauraunt I waited 30 minutes.

Okay back to the restaurant itself. Two words : hella cozy. We were jammed in this tiny corner next to another table of three. So much so, that we may should've just considered combining our space. And that would've been totally fine. Why? Because the food is super worth it, and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Moku is totally cool and whatever the kitchen is grilling will have your mouth watering. Grilled chicken thighs - yup. order two. pork belly - that glaze. yum. bacon wrapped mushrooms - of course it's gonna be good. it's bacon wrapped for goodness sake. croquette - deep fried mash potatoes? yes, please. chicken karaage - much like the croquette but chicken instead. I regret not ordering the chicken meatballs. Although, it does give me another reason to return. Great spot. Good fun. You will mostly likely devour whatever you order at lightening speed. And don't sleep on their beer and sake selection. Lastly, tip your servers well. They're ninja-like service will make it seem like the food and drink are magically appearing while the empty plates and glasses are simultaneously disappearing.
