Ordered a baked scallop roll but was given a salmon and shrimp roll instead. When I called, I was told the scallops were inside the roll. After pulling it apart and finding only shrimp, I called back and was then told they don't even make a baked scallop roll. Very frustrating experience, especially for the price. Being from out of town and visiting my parents The overall experience was good, the sashimi and sushi were tasty and fresh. The host, server and the owner was very present. Although they are short on staffs and it's shows. The portions are definitely smaller than I used to being from Buffalo, NY. If you want extremely loud music and to be assaulted this is the place for you. I took my family to Shogun last night, and we were seated at a table right under the speaker. Although we enjoy music, the volume was so loud that we couldn't hear each other sitting right beside one another. When my daughter asked the staff if we could change tables, the lady working there responded, but her words were drowned out by the music. We decided to move anyway, gathering our things, including the menus. In the process, the lady working there slapped the menu out of my wife's hand. We left immediately, with the lady attempting to stop us. We won't be back. We ended up at The Hangout across the street with a far better experience. read more

I have been to Shogun in the past, but it was before I started Yelping. However, after I met the owner golfing, I decided to visit again. Shogun is on Bolsa Chica & Heil in HB. I ordered the following: Salmon skin roll, spider roll, hotate, ikura w/ quail egg, kani, unagi, amaebi w/ fried heads and hamachi. All of the foregoing was about $43 during HH. The seafood was super fresh, and the portions were large for the price. I was so hungry after not eating for 6 1/2 hours. But afterwards, I was so content. Regarding the ambiance, its a small, quaint place and I liked it. There are only six seats at the sushi bar, so it makes you feel like you are at home. Likewise, the service from John the owner was da kine. I arrived @ 2:30, a 1/2 hour before closing prior to re-opening @ 5. John was willing to craft some excellent sushi for me bc he knew I was hungry! Shogun has been in biz nearly 20 years for a reason. John is a hard working, super friendly guy, who is living the American dream. He makes you feel right at home which translates into an excellent experience. read more

We have been coming to this restaurant for the last 10 years. No exaggeration. It used to be such a great place for sushi in a casual environment. The owner/sushi chef has lost his skill. The last two times the food comes out in the wrong order and the food comes out individually. My wife has to wait 15 min for her order to come out while I I eat mine so it does not get cold. Then I watch her eat ... and as I said before, we order the Sashimi before the meal but Tara comes out afterwards? I am not trying to offend anyone when I say this, but it has totally turned into a red neck sushi bar. I love rednecks - very cool' people, and down to earth but generally speaking, they do not go to the French Laundry or Rubichon's and have a discriminating pallet. We just moved here from Virginia and I was feeling homesick for my go-to sushi. I am so happy I found Shogun -- I am incredibly picky about my sushi and this is the freshest best sushi I've ever had! When I arrived to place a carry-out order, I really appreciated the fact that they were honest that they had gotten all 6 tables at the same time and the wait would be long. It worked out since I had errands to run nearby. When I came back, they were so kind and friendly. I got the opportunity to sit at the sushi bar while they finished up my order and noticed EVERYONE in this hole in the wall was having a wonderful time -- such positive vibes. Ordered rolls and sashimi, both great! The Zero Roll was really really good. No rice using crabmeat as an alternative - with several different kinds of fish. Also had salmon and tuna sashimi, and salmon rolls. All was delicious. Ambiance is cool, kinda old school vibe which we enjoyed. Service was excellent. Can't wait to go back! read more

I placed an order to pickup, but I called back a few minutes later because I forgot to add an extra plate to my order... when I came in she yelled at me in front of the restaurant "CANT YOU SEE HOW BUSY WE ARE AND YOU'RE CALLING US TWICE?!" ummm, no, I cannot see how busy you are through a telephone... Sorry for the inconvenience and spending my money at your restaurant! I won't be returning. Some people just should not work directly with customers. Food was okay, but nothing out of the ordinary. The majority of Orange County sushi bars are horrid disgraces to Japanese culture, other than being the last bastion of CA conservatives (FJB) the people here just have no taste which keeps overrated shltholes like Buddha's Favorite open but if you look hard enough you find places like this and Shunka in Costa Mesa that are total gems. This place has been around for a long time so maybe someday HB actually has a chance at not being a vapid hellhole. This is a classic hole in the wall sushi bar, no frills but the quality and pride is very apparent here. Everything I ordered was good and the waitress Kim was super sweet and funny. read more

Tried out this local place the other day. The two owners were extremely friendly to their regulars, which at times felt like they were prioritizing regulars over new faces. As for the food itself.. the rice in my nigiri was warm and was not seasoned. They were also out of about half of the items I ordered. I think their cooked food may be another story but I went in only for sushi. I could live with the service but warm, unseasoned rice under fairly average/mediocre fish isn't worth a second visit for me. read more

Sometimes all you want in life is good sushi without the pretentiousness aura around it. And that's exactly what you'll get at Shogun - good freshly made sushi that comes with warm service you rarely see anymore at big chain sushi places. Yes, I can go all day about how awesome John is and and how you'll never leave the place as soon as you talk about golf with him - but all other reviews have already talked about it so I'll skip to my other experiences eating here. Surprisingly enough, this was the first time I've tried Shogun. My standard for a sushi restaurant is the salmon nigiri sushi, your standard spicy tuna roll and unagi roll. Although the prices for nigiri is a little high, I'm ok considering how large they are. Also, the ratio of fish to rice is spot on. The place itself is small with about 10-ish tables and about 8 chairs at the sushi bar. I came here on a Thursday night and there wasn't a wait at all so you should be ok. Parking is abundant btw. Come for the fresh sushi but stay for the golf memorabilia above the sushi bar! Highly recommend this place. read more

Hands down the best sushi spot in Huntington Beach. My husband and I always come here and order too much, and then we eat it all anyway. The sushi chef/owner is so awesome and funny. He always takes such good care of us. We love the Trust Me roll, F.N.G. roll, Las Vegas roll, the Super HB roll. We love them all. You can't go wrong here. Their salmon skin salad is really good, too. Once, we ordered five rolls and some sushi pieces, ate everything, and the owner was so impressed, he treated us to a tempura Oreo or something.
