First, let me point out that we've been loyal customers at Shogun in La Verne, CA, for nearly 20 years, and WE LOVE IT. However, when we visited the Palm Desert location recently, we were excited to try it out. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a HUGE mistake. For over $250, we experienced SLOW service and a "chef"--if you can even call him that--who didn't know how to cook a steak to the proper temperature. Our party of four was quickly seated at a grill shared with another family, and the server came over right away to take our drink and appetizer orders. Since the other family had already received their drinks, we expected a similar experience. However, it took forever for our drinks--just water and two soft drinks--to arrive. The sushi appetizer was also delayed and didn't come out until AFTER the chef arrived. When I ordered my drinks, I also asked for additional salad dressing (I love using it on my rice--it's yummy!). The dressing never came, and I had to remind the server MULTIPLE TIMES. On top of that, I drink a lot of water, and we had to track down our server just to get a refill. Now, for the main course... The fried rice had a lot of UNDERCOOKED and hard rice. While the shrimp were cooked fine, that was about the only positive. I ordered a filet to be cooked medium, but it came out WELL DONE. Based on comments from everyone at the table--not just our party--it was clear that all the meat was cooked to the wrong temperature. I should've known this wasn't going to go well when the "chef" started building the onion volcano with his HANDS instead of utensils. Thankfully, none of us got sick from the 'chef' cross-contaminating his utensils between the raw chicken and the overcooked steak. From what we've heard from others who've eaten at this location, this seems to be the NORM here--wish we would have known that before wasting our time and money. Basically, we will NEVER be eating here again unless the management takes this location seriously and makes the necessary changes. You've been WARNED! read more

I wish we could give 0 stars. Seriously. Or negative. We never even got to the food!! We arrived at 8:15 for an 8:30 reservation. At 8:40 my husband checked in and the MANAGER told him they seat people with in 30 minutes of a reservation ???? What!!!! Then they sat us at 8:55. At 9:05 someone came to offer water and I asked how long until they really thought we would have a chef- he said minimum 45 minutes!! THIS IS SUCH TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!! If you know you are running late by over an hour let people know at check in! We wasted an hour. Ended up getting up and just going somewhere else. Good food. Happy hour prices are decent. We were the only people in the restaurant from 3pm when they opened to 4:30 when we left. Sushi not top of the line. Far from it but makes since because it's not a sushi restaurant. 6.50 for nigiri but the nigiri is tiny. Maybe 50 percent off but definitely half the size than a normal nigiri or order of sushi. This was the best experience we have had at Shogun by far!! The mixologist, Mark, made superb cocktails, our chef, Limber, was not only personable and knowledgeable, making our meal to perfection - but he also performed with fire torches, which we have never seen before! Gabby was the best waitress we have ever had - she managed to make sure my husband got exactly what he wanted - filet, lobster, shrimp, and salmon too!! She's was so personable, warm, and inviting! Such a rockstar!! Last, but not least, was Chris, the manager. He came and greeted us personally and took time to get to know us. Call me biased for only writing a review when it's a really good place or a really bad place and in this case , I was not happy at all, especially with a total bill of $1000 for 12 of us. First off, we waited an hour for the chefs to even get to us after the last of our party got there. We waited half an hour for the last of our party to get there but before then it took them 20 to 25 minutes to even get water or get acknowledged. My wife ordered a second shot of patron, and it ended up being a different type of tequila which she did not drink and gave it away, they also brought me an alcoholic beverage, which I didn't even order again because it was weak to begin with. I had to stack up all the used cups and dishes and put them in a corner for them to even pick them up. Sushi roll appetizers were good (not great) Shrimp fried rice, was below average, my wife's filet mignon was ordered medium well with server, chef never confirmed it before cooking and almost served her crispy steak if she would not have spoke up. Chef did not speak English properly and could not communicate with my wife and daughter and assumed I had to be a translator. No special affects from chefs.... BORING. When this place first opened up, it was a bit different and I did not mind coming here, but now owner or management needs to step it up before they close this place down because of lack of customers. When I ordered DoorDash and was missing my dinner sushi roll, I called the restaurant to ask if I could pick it up. The hostess put the manager on the phone for him to tell me it was DoorDash's problem and that they would not be fulfilling it because they claimed they packed it correctly. Its was our second time at shogun, we went this time for our daughter's 6th birthday tonight. They showered her with attention and the Chef JR was engaging with her during the dinner which always makes my night just to see her laugh is everything. The food and drinks were delicious and service was excellent. Do you know what I like about Shogun? Daniel-San; he's great. Do you know what I don't like? Just about everything else. Shogun is the same as a Benihana or Tokyo Wako, but with a slightly upscale decor. Mikado at the JW Marriot in Palm Desert is even a better choice. We saw our server about as many times as the earth has been struck by an extinction level event. This is the same frequency of how you should probably order your steaks at Shogun: Rare. If you have to get up to get extra water from across the table or take back a poorly made drink to the bar, there is a huge problem with the basic service. We weren't being impatient, but there has to be a natural pace to a meal. The server recommended the firecracker shrimp. Do not, by any means, ever order this dish unless you fancy the putrid taste of mayonnaise. With a party of five, none of us liked it and there was a general consensus of disgust. The shrimp are lathered with a mayonnaise-spread as thick as a bodybuilder covered in baby-lotion. The shrimp aren't crispy and I'd rather have the chiseled muscle of a pectoral near my mouth than any of these soggy shrimp. You will too. With the food, I'd steer you towards the seafood options. The steak can easily be over cooked and dry to the bite-sized pieces; there isn't time for the meat to rest before being cut and seared on all sides. Since that's they case, your only true option is medium rare, but that's not a bad thing. $2.00 extra charge for a martini in a noticeably smaller glass than their other specialty martinis on the menu made me sad and disappointed. Whoever is making their dry martinis doesn't know what it means to not add any vermouth at all or isn't washing the shaker between drinks. Enough said. I asked the weightier if the steak was Japanese waygu A5 or American before I even ordered. She clearly stated Japanese A5 waygu and I was expecting that. If it's not what you say it is then don't lie about it. I been to Japan and had waygu and American waygu doesn't even come close to that. However, I am very happy to report that our hostess Amy greeted us. She was very kind Very knowledgeable about the different foods. They have in different ways that they can make them. Then there was our cook JR not only was he entertaining and didn't occupy our time with cheesy jokes. He made good light conversation while cooking an amazing meal and at the end we were pleasantly surprised to have the manager Cynthia check in on us and ask about our experience. Came here to celebrate a family members birthday had reservations at 7:00pm did not get assigned a chef until 9:00pm! We were the last table to get a chef and food did not taste good. Rice was burnt and steak over cooked. When talking with the a manager on duty he would look me in the eye or apologize. The severs were embarrassed on behalf of management. I do not know what happened to this restaurant? We are locals and have eaten at shoguns for years. It has new owners and has gone downhill. The food isn't the same. They have added potatoes to their Teppanyaki grill menu? Not something that goes well with the menu. Small cut up red potatoes. Not good! Service is very slow. We took 3 of our grandchildren out to dinner last night to celebrate birthdays. I informed the host and hostess that two of the grandkids were celebrating birthdays. I even told our waitress. After waiting over twenty minutes for them to come out with the drums and hats after dinner, I had to remind the waitress again. Telling her again two of them had birthdays. I really enjoyed this restaurant. Our Chef Pedro was awesome and very friendly. He played music for us as well. The two things I love the most about this Japanese steakhouse is 1. This restaurant is very spacious inside and you will not feel crammed or packed like a sardine when comparing this to other Japanese steakhouses in the Coachella Valley. This also means there is room for the stroller if you are a family man like myself. 2. The beef and seafood are both good quality. Yes this restaurant is expensive BUT you get what you pay for.
