Heard a lot about this place and was excited to try it. I went with my gluten free friend. I have a fatal fish/seafood allergy, but have never had a problem at ANY brunch place. We were informed by the surly waitress that the crab cakes and whatever else is fried that day is on the SAME GRIDDLE as the French toast and pancakes. That means that there is still protein from whatever was on that griddle that will be transferred to the pancakes, etc., even if cleaned in between, and for me, that means death. For others, like my friend and any vegetarian or vegan I know, it's unsanitary and just disgusting. The waitress didn't seem to care and suggested I don't eat anything on the griddle (wow, that was a tough one.). I opted for the waffle, which was cooked in a waffle iron with nothing else. It was served with a "truffle and black pepper whipped cream," which I asked if was very savory. Not sure if she knew what that meant, or was just soooooo not into her job that day, but her reply was the very informative "it's just yummy." I had it on the side and was glad because my friend and I both tasted it and it was gross. What a waste! My friend asked about several gluten free items, but received the same rude attitude with no accommodations or suggestions. In fairness, the waffle was fine and my friend said hers was good, but that was a special and I can be treated rudely at other places I've stopped visiting. I was visiting in the area and was first time here at Shorty's Sunflower. It's very cute place and have a good menu. I ordered breakfast Veggie omelette for lunch. It was good. I gave them a three stars for this time. The waitress who served us can be a little more friendly with a smile. I would give them another try and order something else o the menu. read more

the location is kind of confusing, it's attached to what looks like a smaller office building.. signage wasn't the greatest from the direction we came from, but we circled around the parking lot and found where we needed to be. came for breakfast early on a Sunday (8:45am ish). there were a few outdoor tables that were full, and the entire inside of the place also seemed to be full and bustling. we were treated by pleasant waitstaff and snagged the last table outside. I got the Shelby eggs (scrambled eggs + zuchinni bread) and my husband got the breakfast club. it took a little while for the food to come out, but probably because they were getting busy. the food was delicious, so definitely worth the bit of a wait we had. would like to come back to try other things on the menu, and would definitely recommend to anyone in the area. read more

Wonderful Breakfast and Lunch! I have been here on many occasions and think the french toast is to die for. (Especially when they have the Cinnamon Nut Crumb French Toast with berry cream sauce). l also enjoy the Breakfast Club Sandwich and Vegie Omelet. My daughter likes the pancakes and the toy corner . I have been for lunch, you gotta check out the sweet potato fries and the burgers are huge with homemade rolls cooked the way you like ( mine has always been a perfect medium rare) . It has been a long time since I have been to this restaurant. I was not disappointed at all! The wait to be seated is long but definitely worth it. The staff inside are very friendly and helpful. I ordered the crab grilled cheese and it tasted delightful. The sandwich melted in your mouth and The parts that oozed out I used the tortilla chips to scoop back up. My daughter ordered a pancake and had no complaints at all. I really enjoyed that they have such an organic friendly menu. They also accommodate those who are vegan and vegetarian or if you're interested in trying something out of the ordinary. Shorty's can be hit or miss in my experience. If you end up having to wait a long time for a table and a long time for the food, it can be painful. I feel the prices are a bit high based on the portions. I do like the fact that many or the items are tasty and original and you can't get them other places (I.e. zucchini bread as a bread choice). However, I find the service is very hit or miss in my trips here. It seemed like the last time I was there, our waitress tried extra hard to leave us stranded forever without refills or checking in while tending to other tables. All the while, the food was taking a long time (40 minutes+ for 3 standard breakfast plates... one being a kids pancake). A cute little breakfast/lunch place that closes very early, 1 or 2 PM depending on the day, has so-so service and reasonable prices. They serve up some unique and tasty breakfast dishes alongside standard breakfast fare. I would have given 4 stars but the wait here, not talking about for a table (though that can be long too) but for your food, is absolutely insane most times and warrants the loss of a couple of stars. I am generally a patient person but I'm sorry, an hour from sit down to food is entirely too long for breakfast - it's just eggs and pancakes for crying out loud, not beef wellington! The only time I sit that long at breakfast is if I'm camping out enjoying some extra coffee and a good conversation. Even if a lot of the stuff is made from scratch, there's no reason it should take that long to cook up breakfast. They clearly have efficiency issues. read more

We were told that there would be a small wait as the place was pretty busy. I took this as a good sign & proceeded outside to sit in a lovely outdoor area and chat with the gal as my mind wandered back to the food back inside. Soon enough, we were called in. My mouth watered. Browsing the menu, making a choice seemed like it would be tough. We saw they had a chalkboard populated with seasonal specials, and my feminine companion was particularly delighted by the color variety of the chalk messages. I was excited by the pumpkin options, as I am a big pumpkin bitch. When it came time to order, the S.O. opted for a veggie omelet, which came with home fries and fresh baked zucchini bread. I asked the friendly waitress to reassure me as to the deliciousness of the "breakfast ench". She confirmed it was one of her favorites, and I was sold. I also ordered a side of home fries and fresh baked pumpkin bread. The meal came in a reasonable amount of time and was better than I was hoping for. Lots of flavor, expertly cooked and artfully presented. My girlfriend allowed me to trade her a morsel of pumpkin bread for zucchini bread, and I wish I opted for the zucchini, though the pumpkin was delicious. The choice of "breakfast ench" was a wise one, as I am a fan of tex-mex fare. When asked what she enjoyed about her omelet, my gal responded "I liked the veggies". They looked fantastic. I've gone here twice, with varying success. First time, we came on a Sunday around 10am. The line was long, and unfortunately there's not much space to wait around inside for a table. Ordered french toast. Took 45 minutes to get our food, and it was fine. Nothing special, really. Second time, however, was a much different experience. Ordered the Dirty Egg Roll, which has BBQ meat, eggs, onions... all around a pretty awesome dish. Went around 9:00am, before the church rush, and it made a huge difference. We were seated, food was out quickly, and it was delicious. 3 stars for the first experience (because in fairness, it was partially our fault for arriving so late), 5 for the next. A greek omelette with not often seen sun dried tomatoes and capers is worth yelping about. Tasted fresh and delicious too, not salty at all despite the caper / olive combo. Zucchini bread with whatever jam they brought me was very, very good. Whole wheat oatmeal cinnamon pancakes were excellent. No misses there, just great breakfast food. That aside, there are some pretty big non-food issues they need to address. The kitchen is painfully slow. We waited about 40 minutes for our food on a Sunday morning. It becomes a log jam, people are sitting at tables waiting for food, people are waiting at the door for them to leave. Not a good way to run a business. Obviously it speaks to how good the food is that people will suffer through this. I wouldn't have minded the wait, but the day we were there it was hot inside the restaurant. This is the kind of place I want to open. I use to live in Pottstown and would frequent this about once a month. Now that I live in Philly I crave this place everyday. Any time I go back to visit friends or family I try to stop here. I love the Texas Eggs in a hole and the sunflower omelet, but anything I get is good. I highly recommend their zucchini bread too. Service can be a little slow if they are busy, but this isn't a place you go to if you're in a hurry. I feel so bad for the yelper, Michael R, who got spoiled food. Great service and fun/unique combinations of food. We frequent this place for lunch and breakfast all the time. The staff is friendly and awesome--laid back, but fun and good service. The draw here is really the food, which is awesome. Breakfast cafes are a dime-a-dozen, but stops like this are a rare find. If it is your first visit, make sure to try the zucchini bread. This is one of my parents' favorite places and has been closed during prior visits to Pottstown. On this visit, I was able to check it out with a college friend and her two children. It's definitely kid-friendly and the wait staff were super nice and friendly. Not only did they offer to take pictures of our group for us, but they got out of the way of the children so that they could take pictures of us and all of the decor in the restaurant. (Gotta give the kiddies something to do while the adults catch-up.) The food was delicious and there were lots of choices. We have tried Shorty's at all times on all days and it's safe to say that you will not get your food for an average of 45 minutes after you order it. No matter how many times I go to this place it never fails to frustrate me to the point that I swear never to set foot in the place again. Unfortunately, it's about the only decent food in Pottstown at breakfast time. They took a shot at serving a dinner tonight. It was over an hour from the time we sat down until we got our appetizers. Over 2 hours and we finally gave up and left without ever being served our main courses. The chefs had about as much sense of urgency as my 11 year old on a Monday morning. I'm new to the neighborhood and heard great things about this place, so I was excited to try it. While we got seated right away, the rest of the visit was pretty terrible. The waitress was forgetful and messed up part of our order. My Sunflower omelet was rubbery and oddly greasy. The bacon inside had more of a ham-like texture. Half of my homefries were mushy, and the rest were underdone. My daughter's chocolate chip pancake was huge, but so overcooked on one side that it was nearly impossible to cut. Beware if you choose the dark roast coffee... it's good, but more expensive than the regular roast (nearly $3!). Oh, and I forgot the flies buzzing around the entire meal. I was pretty amused that their automatic tip options for credit cards start at 20% and go up to 35%. You can choose custom options if you want to tip less, but I just wanted to get out of there (I'm a good tipper when I have a good experience, and my 20% was MORE than generous for the experience we had). $30 breakfast for me and 2 kids... not worth it at all. Pancakes are made from scratch, as are many of their breads, including biscuits that are as good as my homemade and I am from the south. Staff is friendly. We waited quite a bit of time for our waitress to even approach us & only after we asked why no one had approached our table. Simple meals that took an extraordinary long time. No apologies from anyone. I understand if this had been Father's day or orther extra busy day. It wasn't. We've been coming to Shorty's for breakfast from time-to-time for more than five years. They have remained consistent with quality service and food. They recently improved the atmosphere by reconfiguring and expanding the space so that people waiting for tables at breakfast are no longer bunched up near the front doors. They now have places to sit while waiting and it's now usually a relatively short wait. What brings us here after a thirty minute drive from home is the creative, well prepared menu choices and the innovative presentation. You certainly can get your eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee prepared the way you have always ordered them. That's their Basic Breakfast. But, that's not why you're here. You're here for the Flying Dutchman, the Dirty Egg Roll, Texas Eggs in a Hole, or my favorite, Shorty's Omlet that's chock full of good stuff. Dark roast coffee is offered with an upcharge. If you want jelly with your toast you must ask for it and you will receive some home made preserves in a teeny-weeny cup, barely enough for one slice of toast. You can get home made hot sauce in a slightly larger cup, again with an upcharge. The dry, cold in the center, cornbread arrived half way through breafast as if it had been pulled from the refrigerator/freezer and placed briefly on the grill before serving. Team serving works well here, better than other establishments we frequent. All of the servers are friendly, attentive, and accomodating. Prices here are commenserate with the quality of the food. Aside from my above mentioned quibbling, we will surely continue to visit Shorty's for a delightful breakfast. read more
