I was doing some Yelping to try to find a good Thai place in LA, and this came up as one of the best, so my friend and I decided to try it out! LOCATION: I really wasn't a fan. Not being an LA native, I got lost on the way here and had no clue where I was when I eventually got here...but the street that it's on is pretty run down and I was a little bit scared at first. I got here in the evening at around 7pm and most of the buildings around it were already closed. There was this dark, eerie feeling to the street and I wasn't sure if I was in a safe place or not. Luckily my guy friend was with me so it was ok! PARKING: As with most places in LA, I'm pretty sure there was not parking lot for Si Laa, so I spent a few minutes circling the block trying to find some decent street parking. I ended up parking across the street from the restaurant, and all of the street spots were metered :( INTERIOR/AMBIENCE: Loved it. It was a dim lit restaurant, pretty small and the noise level was quiet. Definitely a great date night place if that's what you're going for. It was kinda awk because I think the waiters thought my friend and I were on a date even though we definitely were not...but that's ok! The decor was trendy and modern and gave it a sort of Asian fusion feel. FOOD: For an appetizer I ordered the filet mignon satay. Just the sound of it made my mouth water! I am used to get chicken satay so I was surprised when they were filet mignon instead. The were a little pricey for an appetizer at $11, but it was well worth it. So soft and cooked to perfection. For my entree, I ordered the pad thai ($16). I thought it was decent, but there was something in there that I couldn't identify but my friend said it was probably the crab meat. My friend got the pad see you which he said was really good. I kind of wished I ordered that instead because it looked better than my pad thai and was also cheaper at $12. I also got a thai iced tea which was delicious! :) For dessert we wanted to get the coconut ice cream, but the waiters said it's homemade and they had just made a new batch that needed to be freezed for a few hours, so we weren't able to have any :( I was sad! You know, I was just commenting the other day that this area needed some Thai joints. Six or seven within a half mile radius was clearly not enough! Oh wait.. no, no I wasn't. After a game of toss up in figuring out which Thai joint to get take-out from, the new kid on the block won. This one time Froyo place was stepping up to the big leagues and now a respectable looking Thai establishment. Called up on a Saturday night, which I would expect to be somewhat busy and placed my order really easy. About 15 minutes later I was going to get my meal and yet there was only a couple and some really lonely looking person at the bar in the place. So of course the order was ready. Got it and booked. Parking wasn't so bad either. My goodness, sometimes I really do dig Jewish days of rest. At least when others observe them! I had the Seafood Pad Thai. Which, I seem to try when I see it on the menu. Why I keep picking seafood with Thai when I realize I'm going to feel it later? I have no idea. The scallops were pretty overcooked and the mixing of the seafood and noodles was a big joke. I don't need to see the shrimp laying on top of the noodles, mix them in. Upon reflection, I have not had a great seafood medley in Thai food that hasn't given me some.. stomach issues. Yes, let's leave it at that. On my 5th trip to powder my nose I came to the conclusion that I should have gone with the suggestion of Tuk Tuk. What a way more reliable and tastier Thai Joint. Asking how the Chicken Pad See You resulted in realizing that we really should have stuck with Tuk Tuk Thai. It's not that the food was bad. It's just that it wasn't very memorable. I have to give this one 2 1/2-3 stars. While we didn't eat there, the atmosphere was pretty chill for the time I was in there.. be it a little on the small and whitely sterilized look it had going on. This place is great! If you love Thai food I would definitely recommend you try Si Laa. Some of my favorites are: -Pot Stickers -The Farmer's Market Veggies -Pad Thai -Pad See You The ambiance is a little different from your typical Thai restaurant, with flowers on each table and a modern classy look. It has a little more of a 'fancy' feel to it. The staff is excellent, they are extremely attentive and very knowledgable, they give great recommendations if you are up for trying something new. Finally came back to try them again and had a much, much better experience. Their curries are super tasty and the quality is really high. It's not the cheapest Thai in the area but I'm willing to spend money on higher quality. We tried the hidden treasures appetizer which is basically shrimp dumplings with crab in a spicy sauce. Very very good. They were gone quickly. We also tried their crispy garden rolls, while tasty, they were more suited for the vegetarians in our group. I need my meat! At the owners insistance, I tried the short rib in green curry "everyone always comes here for that," she said. It was really good, but I would've preferred to order something more "standard" like Pad Thai or red coconut curry. Apparently it's their house speciality. Fair enough. My wife had their asian eggplant which she really liked. I didn't like how pushy she was with our orders but perhaps next time we'll be able to order what we want and that would make the meal much more satisfying. I understand that she wants us to try their specials since "you can order Pad Thai anywhere" but sometimes you just want the standard stuff. We'll be back! read more

As of last Saturday, it's official, this is by far my FAVORITE Thai Restaurant in LA! The first time we had Si Laa, we were very content, and knew we had to try this place again. It doesn't hurt that it's 1 block from my apartment either. I have to say, the second time around was absolutely incredible. We ordered Hidden Treasures for an app, Devil Noodles with Short Ribs, and the Chicken with Red Curry Sauce. The appetizer was quite an orgasmic experience. Prawns topped with blue crab, drizzled with a yellow-grass curry sauce. It was the perfect one bite wonder! The Devil noodles, were spicy, flavorful;and the short rib pieces were plentiful and tender! The Red Curry Sauce with chicken and peppers was also an excellent choice. Tender chicken in a spicy red curry sauce that was so delicious, I felt the need to guzzle it down like a drink. This place excites my taste buds, and leaves me anticipating my next visit. Si Laa was surprisingly empty on a Sunday night for how delicious the food was. We were one of two tables, with a larger party coming in later. Regardless, the meal was very fresh-tasting and delicious. Don't be afraid to ask the waitress questions, of the three of us two ended up getting dishes not specifically on the menu (Pad si-ew with beef, which ended up being short ribs, and vegetarian pad thai). I got the seafood Pad Thai and it was chock full of large prawns, scallops and real crab meat. Definitely worth the price. read more

There's a saying that experiencing Thai food should evoke the five senses. That said, Si Laa does the job. It's a clean, unpretentious place that serves incredibly flavorful Thai food. As you walk in, the ambiance is really simple white with dark wooden tones. Service was pretty good; our server knew everything on the menu and was confident in her recommendations. She recommended the Hidden Treasures and directed my craving for curry to a house special Short Rib curry. Both were tasty, and not heavy or greasy like some cheaper Thai joints. So when it comes to noodles, it's either Pad See Ew or Pad Thai. We went for the pad thai, which was really good but 1) the portion was small and 2) there were alot of bean sprouts, which I'm not fond of. In most cases, I think the portions for all the dishes are very small. You would only be able to share with one other person, so don't bank on rolling in 20 deep with your Thai posse. Authentic Thai is hard to find in Los Angeles and this place fizzes with authenticity. If you don't mind paying a little more and getting a smaller portions, then Si Laa is the place for you. I rarely give a restaurant 5 stars, but I am happily obliging with Si Laa Thai. A girlfriend of mine took me to Si Laa, and I was not expecting much-- just a typical, run of the mill thai dinner. On an aside, Thai is one of my favorite types of cuisine, and of all the different Thai places I've been to, this is, by far, one of the best ever. To start off with, the decor inside is beautiful, featuring modern simplicity, and tasteful art installations. The restaurant shows more like an art gallery than a restaurant. The owner, Binh (sp?) is like a doting Asian mother, who welcomes each guest warmly and knows most clients by name. We told Binh to give us a tasting menu, and she started us off with complimentary glasses of Frog's Leap zin, (which is phenomenal btw). We then started with a poached prawn appetizer, where the prawns were topped with crab and a red-type of curry. Delish!! It was light, flavorful and perfect in texture. The second course we had was a pork broth that she had prepared for 24 hours the night before. It had braised pork, thick rice noodles and cilantro. It was delisious, and I had never had that type of soup in a Thai restaurant before. Binh's daughter (also very sweet) brought out a skirt steak yum nua for our 3rd course, and everything was so fresh and delicious. (She goes to the farmer's market nearly everyday to ensure that her ingredients are fresh and organic). She then brought us a deep fried cat fish dish and crab noodles. After that incredible meal, we finished with a coconut ice cream (which tastes like the coconut sticky rice) with passion fruit on top. The food was amazing, but what made the experience most special was knowing that Binh had hand picked her favorite dishes for us, and was very attentive. My friend and I stayed until 11pm talking (we lost track of time), but Binh never asked us to leave or even noticed we had stayed an hour after closing time! I think I found the best Thai restaurant in Los Angeles. We were told to come here by a family friend and we found a hidden gem! The decor is nice and the food is unreal. We ordered the beef satay, hidden treasure, branzino, catfish, duck, devils noodles and fried rice. I haven't been impressed by Thai food in a while and this hit the spot. The duck was amazing. They also have good wine on the menu and I for sure plan on coming back here for more! I ran into a friend of mine and he eats here once a week it's so good! read more

We ordered delivery so I can't speak for the atmosphere.. but I can confidently say this is the most delicious and healthy tasting Thai I've ever had. They don't need to hide the taste of inferior ingredients with globs of butter and oil.. because the ingredients and manner they are prepared are exceptional. We ordered at least 6 or 7 different appetizers and entrees.. and they were all wonderful in their own ways. Doesn't matter what you order IT will be good. I went for dinner with my mother because a friend told me the food was really good.. We got there were 3 tables on 10 with people eating. We walked all the way to the bar on the other side of the restaurant to speak with someone working. The waitress was on the phone, hanged up without telling us anything, welcoming us or apologizing for the wait. After telling her we needed a table for two people, she looked at the more than half empty space and responded:" I am sorry we are fully booked" ! We asked if ywe could seat at the bar and the response was : " Yes but you will wait a long time to get your food as the chef is really busy"!!! Wow! It's rare that a single dish brings so much joy. I speak of the Green Curry Short Rib. This dish comes with delicate and flakey nan bread to soak up that delicious spicy green sauce. And the short rib is tender moist and bursts with flavor. I'm hungry just thinking about this dish. Best part is drizzle that green sauce on fried rice for heavenly flavors. Had dinner here last Tuesday with my man. The place was nearly empty. A few other folks came in while we were eating. I'm surprised it wasn't busier because it was extremely tasty. It's a small restaurant with a nice bar at the back. The interior is really cute. The menu is a bit pricey for thai but they use really fresh ingredients and the food seems less oily than the little, cheap, delivery places. We started with the fresh spring rolls. Deliciousness. Refreshing, crisp veggies, decent portion, and really tasty dipping sauce. We moved on to a Green papaya salad. This was especially delicious. It had a really great spice which built up as you ate it. The flavors were spot on and the cashews in particular were really great. Thai restaurants tend to use peanuts which are okay but not my favorite nut, this little change made a huge difference in flavor for me. For entrees we each had brown rice (the good, grainy, darker brown rice, which was wonderful) and we shared the Farmers Market vegetable curry and the Spicy Basil Chicken. The curry was decent. Not the most flavorful curry I've tasted though. I wish it had a bit more punch of flavor and spice. However, the selection of fresh veggies in it was great. The spicy basil chicken was awesome. So flavorful and delicious. I could have had two orders. We finished dinner with fresh mint tea and coconut ice cream. Both were heavenly. The ice cream had crushed peanuts and berries on top. There aren't many Asian restaurants on this stretch the neighborhood, because it's primarily Jewish-American roots. But it nice to find a neighborhood gem with an Asian flair. I had found Si Laa on my Yelp app and felt it was a good halfway point to meet with a friend of mine. I'm glad found the place, because our dinner was amazing. I found the similarities of Si Laa almost the same as Talesai, another neighborhood gem that I like. Si Laa has a nice, quiet, romantic ambiance. The decor is very modern and upscale. The menu at Si Laa is a much smaller scale from the Talesai menu, however at slightly lower prices. The wine selections looks pretty good and are reasonably priced too. The FOOD. I loved the Crispy Duck, the Roasted Heritage Chicken, and the Ginger Garlic Fried Rice. Our server convinced me to try something different (I guess she knows a foodie when she sees one), She convinced me to add their Short Ribs to the order of Pad See Ew. Let me tell ya, I am forever infatuated with the Pad See Ew with the Short Ribs. It is an exceptional noodle dish and a must try when you dine at Si Laa. As for the service, it was very attentive at Si Laa. My guest and I were greeted warmly without a reservation (I had forgot to make a reservation, but I was relieved that we could be seated) and throughout our entire dinner experience. What a wonderful time i had last night eating at this beautiful, artist vibe contemporary Thai Restaurant. I was invited to a dinner party and had already heard about how delicious the food was. However, I had never imagined that each dish would be so flavorful, unusual, fresh tasting and perfectly seasoned. I was in for a treat when the appetizers started to come out...from the Hidden Treasures with Mee Krob, Chicken Satay and Thai Dim Sum. I was in heaven, I wasn't very hungry, but for some reason my taste buds perked up throughout the course of the evening. I have to say my favorite Entrees are (if I'm forced to choose) are the Heavenly Duck and Short Rib's braised in coconut curry with an amazing flat bread that tasted like a dessert to me. I'm not a big lamb person, but the New Zealand Lamb chop would make me turn into a lover of lamb, it was charred perfectly and marinated with spices that I've never tasted before. I have coworkers going to lunch today. They offer plate lunches that are very reasonable, and come with crispy vegetable rolls, green salad and rice. The chef came out and greeted us and was so cute, she's about 75 and so adorable. I truly felt the love that she put into preparing all of the dishes! Si Laa is quite a surprise - a great Thai restaurant that makes it's mark with delicious taste and some interesting twists. Starting with the drinks, they have a wide variety of wine available for the most part along with a few beer choices (like Singha). Additionally, they have teas/Thai iced teas/sodas available as well. Food-wise, they have the normal Thai dish menu mixed in with some non-traditional Thai dishes that I haven't seen on other menus. We started out with the pot stickers - steamed dumplings with a nice kick for the sauce that really gives a very traditional plate a nice zing. I wish the portion was bigger but the taste is on point. I then ordered the short rib which comes with Thai pancakes and a green curry sauce. The curry has a nice spice to it as well - rich with flavor - and the short rib is cooked to where it simply melts in your mouth. Amazing. Again, I can only wish that the portion was slightly bigger and that more pancakes were provided because I did finish them before finishing off the rest of the curry. The curry also had some nice fresh veggies mixed in. Cost-wise, it's a little bit higher than other Thai restaurants and will run you about $20+ for a good meal I'd say. The area around the restaurant is a little crazy so do be a little careful - we experienced some 'interesting' people along the way (might have just been the time of day). Service is super nice and accommodating and it seems like a family-owned type of venue. The restaurant decor is really clean and has a nice simple, tile look and is one of the more fancier Thai restaurants I've been to in SoCal. Parking-wise, there usually is street parking available around the area. Again, Si Laa is a thoughtful Thai restaurant joint both in it's look and food prep. I asked the server to bring us pepper, 5 mins later... nothing... 10 mins later... nothing... 15 mins later... nothing. I did notice it was mostly white people in the restaurant so I figured they would pay more attention to them than an average couple that don't look like they got money? Guess it's been understood. I always drive by this place and kept saying I would go. Tired not wanting to sit and eat alone I called for takeout and asked them to help me pick out a rice noodle dish since I did not have the menu in front of me. Woman on the phone was super helpful and recommended the spicy crab noodle with garlic and chili or some kind of amazing sounding short rib noodle thing. I love crab soooo crab noodles won. Wow. I have had other places crab noodles and could not even see the little tiny shreds of crab. The dish had some egg in it and so the first bite I took I thought, "wow, what a nice chunk of egg white." Wrong! It was huge honking piece of crab. And there was plenty in my to go container. I am still shocked how non-scimpy they were with crab. The menu looks really good. Nice twist on some classics. I will order something new every time I go. I'm in love ;-) Oh and Natalee Thai may be around the corner but 1) ordered chicken satay and it was raw in the middle . Yelp really misled me this time - no way does this place deserve 4 stars. The food lacks flavor (I had the Pad Se You with chicken), which is unbelievable for Thai food, and the service is really really really slow. (It's a small space! How could you keep missing me?) It's not bad per se, but it's not worth paying for when you can get something better somewhere else for half the price. (And without having to look hard!) This used to be Naraya Thai, but reopened as Si Laa about 2 months ago. We ended up wandering in here on a lark, and that was a lovely bit of serendipity. A moderately priced menu of some Thai standards and creative adaptations, the only problem was deciding which delicious sounding plate to order. We started with a shrimp / salad appetizer that was described as "Hot and devastating", and we were not disappointed. A fantastic lime juice salad dressing ever so slightly tempered the sliced thai chilies mixed in with the greens. Though their lunch menu also looks delicious, that on it's own would make a fantastic light meal. For the mains, we got the Devil Noodles and a milder lamb curry. The noodles also lived up to their name, with that perfect blend of heat without overpowering the flavor. The curry (whose name I don't recall) was designed to specifically compliment the flavor of the lamb, and it certainly did. The lamb itself was incredibly tender, perfectly cooked and fell apart just to your fork. To top it all off, they brought out a complimentary dessert of homemade coconut ice cream and a coconut jelly. The service was fantastic, they have a take-out menu and free delivery within 2 miles. Interestingly, though the restaurant is a bit on the smaller side, there is another section that is currently open. It will be interesting to see how they use that space! Bottom line: if you want good Thai food with a modern twist, forget Natalee Thai. Si Laa is the place to go. read more

Si Laa is delicious. I live less than a block away but would definitely drive well out of my way (if i needed to) just to eat there. The price point is a bit higher than one would expect for Thai food in west L.A., but the quality of the food more than justifies the markup. I had yellow curry with lamb and found it to be the best iteration of yellow curry i'd had to date. The atmosphere is definitely upscale -- for a Thai restaurant -- though i have paid much more for a meal in the neighborhood and eaten inferior food in an inferior atmosphere. The entrees top out in the low 20s, but adding appetizers and a bottle of wine can certainly push the bill up considerably. The food is cooked with care, but maybe as a result of its location (on Robertson a half block north of Pico), there haven't been many customers inside when i have eaten there or walked by. Top notch Thai. Great tom khar gai and fresh, fresh greens salad...truly yummy!!

My brother and I dropped by this place for a quick dinner. Pretty fancy inside decor. But I'll talk first about the food. I got the "Short Rib." When it came out, I was slightly disappointed first because the portion was so small..However the flavor and texture of the green coconut curry sauce was out of this world. A lot of times, curry tends to run either too light or runs way too creamy that you get sick of it after only a couple spoonfuls. But this, right here, was perfection. OMG...so good. However I did have a thing against their customer service. Most people that were sitting down eating were in groups of 4 or more. And when my brother and I walked in, they asked if we could sit in the bar area because the tables were for 4 or more. I mean we didn't really mind..but that kind of sucked. What sucked even more was that near the end of our meal, we saw a couple walk in and guess what happened. Yup, they got a table for 4 for themselves. I mean I would've appreciated if they apologized for not having us sit at a table. But I thought that was sort of an unpleasant taste for our experience here. Not coming back. Highly unimpressive and this is one of those rare moments where trusting in Yelp just is completely wrong. The food wasn't remarkable, and for two dollar signs, I expect it to be outstanding. But instead it was mediocre and bland. My tom yum soup with shrimp had no kick at all (when IT SHOULD). My friend is vegetarian, and she asked for her noodles to have tofu instead of beef, and what did it come out with? Beef. We had to send it back and wait even longer. The Coconut Sticky rice is my drug of choice. It is amazing. I ordered the Papaya Salad, Fresh rolls and the thai curry with sticky rice. Everything was fresh and tasty. Nothing was really spicy, so I had to ask for some dry chili flake. The place was not that busy on a Friday night, I think they do a lot of take out. I almost don't want to write the review so that I can keep this place to myself. The quick and dirty- if you want to get some great thai food not have to fight the crowds or want to pick something up on your way home because you are way too tired to cook or even boil water. This place is amazing. If it was on the way home from me I think I would eat here 3 times a week. There were not the usual array of green, red, yellow, panang and mussaman curry that I am use to but the flavors were all really good. read more
