Came in and was seated right away. Papaya salad was plain. Not even spicy, the pad Thai was a small portion, and it was 17$ HELLA OVERPRICED. You can get 3 order of pad Thai for 5 bucks elsewhere. I asked the server to bring us pepper, 5 mins later... nothing... 10 mins later... nothing... 15 mins later... nothing. I did notice it was mostly white people in the restaurant so I figured they would pay more attention to them than an average couple that don't look like they got money? Guess it's been understood. They deserved no tip but my bf was nice enough to leave a dollar & some change. Worst Thai spot ever. This was my last resort spot anyways because the 2 restaurant I wanted to go to was closed. read more

My favorite Thai restaurant in the United States - this place has the best invention called "Hidden Treasures" - it's an appetizer that is such a delicious starter and unique to this restaurant. It's like an explosion of flavor in your mouth. I love their Pad si yu with beef shortrib. The tom ka gai soup is delicious as well. I got a chance to eat their fried catfish as well, and was pleasantly surprised. It reminds me of being in Chaing Mai, Thailand. The family owners of this restaurant are so nice, and accommodating. They are full of good advice when it comes to Thailand, and Thai food, as well as what types of ingredients are best if one were to cook Thai food. The best thing is that you will get a "home-cooked" style meal, that is not salty, but is very tasty with no MSG. It is truely one of my favorite restaurants in all of Los Angeles. read more

Overall I would have given them 2 stars, but for whatever reason I feel bad about that.. and the service was very good. The breakdown: Service 4 stars Ambiance 4 stars Food 2 stars Value 1 star Arrived with high expectations, and ultimately felt underwhelmed. The service is very good, the ambiance is nice, but the food was just OK, and (I very rarely bring this up) but we felt that everything was about 20-25% more expensive than it should be, given the quality and/or portion. Crispy Garden Rolls, $8. Pretty tasty, but nothing to write home about. Prime example of the 20% thing I mentioned before. I believe it was two rolls, each sliced into thirds. It should have been an $6 dish, tops. Green Papaya Salad, $16. My fiancee enjoyed it, though we both felt it was under spiced (the menu lists it as spicy, however ours was not). Includes cashews and tomatoes - but you'll have to look for them. I felt that we were served a pile of green papaya with a few shredded carrots, and the cashews and tomatoes were included as a garnish. Dressing was watery and underwhelming. For $16 I had higher expectations, for sure. Asian Eggplant, $10. This turned out to be the winner of the evening. Well prepared, very flavorful, and the eggplant doneness was perfect. I would have killed for a *slightly* larger portion, but all things considered this was the best dish in terms of taste and value, hands down. Short Rib (curry), $19. I ordered this based on the recommendation of our server. It's not something I'd typically order at a Thai restaurant, and she sold it well. The dish was served in a small cast iron pot, holding about 1 cup of total volume. I was instructed to make little Thai tacos with the roti (flatbread). Overall, this dish had a lot of potential, but I felt a little annoyed with the portion. I found maybe 4 pieces of meat, each smaller than my pinky finger. Same with the snap peas - nada. Good luck finding them. The roti was very oily, and I ended up ordering a side of steamed rice ($2) so I could get a little more milage out of the coconut broth. Pad See You, $13. This is one of our staple dishes, and we know it well. My fiancee is a veggie, so we asked for tofu instead of the chicken. The noodles were incredibly oily, so much that we didn't bother eating the dish, or taking it home. In the end, for two diners (including 3 12oz beers), we spent over $100 included tax and tip and left dissatisfied. While I admit we went in with high expectations, I honestly feel we would have enjoyed a better meal for significantly less elsewhere. I've been here two times now. Si Laa is a intimate, well-decorated Thai restaurant with friendly and useful service. The food is a little pricey for the portion size, but feels justified given the quality of the food. It is high quality and tastes really fresh. During the times I've been here, I highly recommend the crispy garden rolls with sweet plum sauce and the market vegetables in red coconut curry (which is absolutely delicious with a side of rice!). I felt like I could keep eating the red coconut curry, but I had to share. Ha. The Pad Thai and Pad See You can both be made vegetarian (I just got the meat on the side for my friends or family), and are both very flavorful and fresh as well! The portion sizes are a bit on the smaller end, so you will probably end up ordering more dishes than expected, but the waitresses were really helpful both times in determining whether the amount of food we ordered would be enough or too much (they were right both times). The presentation of the food is also really nice and it definitely feels a little more upscale than the average Thai place. One tip: I wouldn't recommend coming to this place when you are STARVING only because it does take a while to make the food (probably because it's made fresh), but otherwise, if you can wait a little for a delicious meal, it's definitely well worth it! read more

Absolutely divine! Everything (I got to sample a lot of different items due to large party) was fresh, interesting and delicious. This is going to be one of those places that it's hard to get a table at when word of mouth spreads. Also, just had a great write up in Huffington Post, so I expect it will be getting busier. I can only give it 4 stars because the price is much higher than other Thai restaurants in LA and the portions are small. It has been forever since I've had my socks knocked off by a restaurant ... but this place reminded me that there are still gems in the city! My friend and I started off with the hidden treasure - so amazing. You have to eat it in one bite to get the full impact of all the flavors working together. For the entree we shared the fried fish... some kind of fish that I've never heard of. It's basically just an entire fish that is deboned and fried. It was crispy with great flavor. We weren't adventurous enough to eat the head, but we were scraping the last bits of the fish off the plate. Lastly as a veggie dish we got the egg plant. It was good, but more oily than I would have liked. I probably wouldn't get this dish again. For dessert we had Mango Sticky rice, which was the perfect way to end a great Thai meal. And to top it off, our waitress, who might also have been the owner, was the cutest thing ever! She knew it was our first time and kept on coming over to check up on us (but not in an annoying way). She was just so adorable and you could tell that she was proud of her dish creations and excited that we really enjoyed her food! read more

As others said, this is not your random Thai take-out place. The owner is actually brothers and a part of the Talesai family. The food was presented well, and very flavorful. The Hidden Treasures was delicious (8 pieces of shrimp is some tasty curry sauce), and so was the Tom Yum Shrimp, and Pad Thai. The Chicken Basil was unnecessary - not much flavor in that one. Probably the most enjoyable restaurant experience I've had in a long while. Food was superb. So much better than our standard neighborhood cheapy Thai joint. The beef in the Devil noodles was so tender and flavorful. And the whole Bronzino fish was crispy and not at all greasy. The Hidden Treasures appetizer was really killer. But beyond the food being really great, the service was amazing. The owner recommended things without at all being pushy. And she was attentive without being annoyingly in your face. Such a refreshing change from part-time actor servers who are only working as a way to get close to Hollywood agents and really could give a rats ass about you as a customer. Add to the food and service, the noise level was pleasantly quiet. Yay for actually being able to have a conversation with my husband! Try this place out you won't be disappointed! I came with two friends on Friday night at 9PM, and against our better judgment, without a reservation. And even though the staff was busy serving a large group, a nice lady seated us and got us started on drinks. She explained that because of the large group they were attending to, she couldn't take our food orders right away. No problem. But she was kind enough to go through the menu with her recommendations and detailed descriptions of the house specialties. When it came time for us to order (maybe 10 minutes later), we had the Hidden Treasures, Devil Noodles, whole branzino, and sugar snap peas. As we waited, we were treated to complimentary potstickers as an apology for the wait. Neat! Great customer service! The skin on these little dumplings was very light and delicate, not thick and chewy like most other places. It was flavored with a very nice ginger soy sauce. The hidden treasures appetizer was outstanding. Large crisp shrimp topped with chunks of crab and a kickass chili-curryish sauce. My friends and I commented that we could be happy just eating rice with that awesome sauce. The devil noodles came next. The short ribs were extremely tender and the noodles were softer and smoother than standard rice noodles. Their sugar snap peas w/ mushrooms tasted really fresh and well... snappy. Nicely cooked and not over seasoned. The fried branzino was nuts. It was a whole fish (I'd estimate 2 pounds) was deep fried until every part was crispy, including the head, some bones, and fins, and drizzled a tangy red sauce over it. The skin was crispy but the meat was perfectly tender and moist. They did a great job with this dish. We took turns munching on the various parts of the fish that we'd normally discard. It was really tasty and very different. We finished our meal with the homemade coconut ice cream and the sweet sticky rice, which were both perfect in flavor and consistency. Towards the end of our meal (I think were there well past their 10PM closing time), the manager introduced us to her mother who was also their head chef, who came out of the kitchen to meet us! A little grey-haired lady wearing a chef's jacket (and a huge smile) shook our hands humbly soaked up our compliments of her handiwork. What a treat! Si Laa's food is great, but the staff (all family members I believe) is even better. I'm a big fan of this establishment. They made us feel like honored guests even though we stayed pretty late and didn't have reservations. read more

Just tried Si Laa for the first time. Fantastic! Taking off one star because, as other reviewers have mentioned, the prices are high and the portions are small compared to many Thai restaurants. But you're paying for the fanciness of the place. It's pretty upscale. We ordered the chicken larb, crispy duck, and garlic ginger rice. Everything was delicious and on point, particularly the larb which came with the most perfect Romaine lettuce leaves. Where did this pristine lettuce come from in the middle of February? We'll definitely be back to try the branzino. One of those went by and it looked amazing. The place is very small, so make a reservation. There's a second room attached to the main dining room, but it was empty and looked like it's never used (maybe they're still working on it). I hope they do expand, because they seem to have enough business to fill the space, and they deserve it. read more

We went last night for dinner for the first time, and we were quite pleased with our experience. The quality and taste of the food was a notch above most Thai restaurants. I guess the best way I can describe it was "fine dining" Thai food, versus the typical massive quantity style. Oftentimes we see fine dining French or Italian restaurants, but seldom a Thai restaurant. So Si Laa falls into that category for me. Despite of it, the price was still within reason, and with good portions. We ordered soft shell crab for appetizer, and it was fried just perfectly, delicately crispy, with a pleasant sweet sauce. We gobbled it up quickly. Then we had crispy duck and trout, which was a special for the evening. Both were quite nice. We thought we would have leftovers but we ended up eating it all. I hope that was enough compliment to the chef! The only thing I'd suggest to Si Laa is to get more waiter/waitress help. One person was just not enough. Despite that she was running around like crazy, she did a wonderful job, always with a smile, but I don't know if all the patrons were as understanding. Reservation recommended. Since they're only open in the evenings, you'd have to leave a message if calling during the day. I left my phone number for a return call in case they were booked up, and I promptly received a confirmation call back the same day. read more

AMAZING Thai food! This is our regular Friday night take out. Can't say enough good stuff. Great service and really fantastic, consistently delicious food. My fiance's favorite is the devil noodles- I love the tom khar gai. I really haven't had a bad dish here. Recently tried the Shrimp curry and it was sooo yummy. Please try this place!! Their food is amazing but they never seem to be full. By far the best Thai food I've had in LA, actually anywhere other than Thailand. Si Laa is several notches above the average Thai place. Their ingredients (fish, meat, prawns) are top quality. Their presentation is lovely. The atmosphere is serene, cozy upscale. All the dishes are artfully prepared with simple, palate pleasing flavors. My favorites were the duck, the whole branzino, the short rib in green curry and coconut sticky rice. Things tended toward spicy, which I love, but take caution if you're sensitive to spicy food. Words cannot really do this place justice. The staff (owners?) are warm and friendly and you can taste their passion in the food. I can't wait to go back again! read more

Almost gave this place just 2 stars. Service was a little slow, but they were busy. At 7:30 p.m. they were already out of their Fresh Rolls. I ordered the Pot Stickers instead for an appetiser. The chicken inside a few of them was cold. I'm not a Pot Sticker expert, but I don't think this is the way they are supposed to be. Tasty Ginger Soy Sauce, however and several of the other Pot Stickers were hot all the way through. I ordered Pad Thai, and when I said I preferred it spicy, they steered me away from Pad Thai entirely and to their 'Spicy' Crab Noodles. However, the Crab Noodles were not spicy at all and did not measure-up to the Pad Thai they then brought me when I expressed displeasure (no charge for the first crab entrée). Still the Pad Thai was 'just' good. After reading all the rave reviews here on Yelp I was expecting much, much more from the food. To their credit, they bring chili flakes on the side and nicely-cut fresh lime wedges. 1/2 bottle of Frog's Leap Zinfandel ($23), complimented the average meal nicely. One annoying patron after another talked on-and-on on their cell phone next to me at the bar. The staff did nothing to encourage them to take their discourse outside, which is the polite way to handle a cell phone call in a restaurant. I probably won't return to Si Laa; not because it was bad, but because it was just so completely average in every respect. Fire off let me start by saying that our server Lynn was terrific. My friend was a vegetarian so she helped us pick out some stuff for him that we could both share. We got the tom Khar soup which was amazing that we both inhaled. Then we got the mixed veggies with red curry which was great and I got the short rib with green curry which was really good. We got the sticky rice with mango which literally was a mouth orgasm and Lynn was sweet enough to add a complimentary scoop of their handmade coconut ice cream because I wanted to try it. If beef sounds good, I say so. Ben Yenbamroong is such an amazing chef and a truly wonderful and lovely host. She makes everyone feel like part of the family. My favs are: fresh spring rolls, skirt steak salad, Thai curry (chicken), lamb chops, shrimp with garlic, and....sigh....ALL the noodle dishes! Family run Thai restaurant. Don't be fooled by the white table cloth or the excellent service, this place has a total "home" feel to it. The staff is genuinely sweet and caring of your dining experience. The chef comes out to see how you like your food. Ingredients are fresh, flavorful, high quality and matched in a traditional Thai fashion. They buy their beef at the best butcher shop in town. They do it right here. This place is not the most visible restaurant in town but once you're inside you realize that like one of its signature dishes, it's a hidden treasure. The place is surprisingly elegant for a Thai restaurant. The atmosphere is quiet so it is a good place for a date or to go with family or friends. The service was excellent. We were not ignored but neither was the staff intrusive. Now about the food. The best tasting Thai food I ever had! Started with their Hidden Treasure plate: Shrimp in coconut curry. It was tasty but not too spicy. Then we had the Whole Branzino and it was flaky and lean and yet moist. The red curry vegetables were well done and the short ribs with green curry was more spicy. Dessert is very limited but the entire meal was delicious. My main issue with this place is that since the food is so good and the prices quite high for Thai food, I expect larger servings. Best Thai I've ever had! The owner was nice enough to get us a table even though it was packed on the weekend. I believe the place opened recently even though you couldn't tell by the attentive waiter staff and quality of the food. The prices were reasonable for the flavor of the food, and it's the best Thai restaurant in the neighborhood. I had the Golden Triangles (deep fried & stuffed with crab) which were outstanding as well as the Duck Rolls and the Signature T-Bone Steak was great. Plus the waitress always refilled my ice water before it was empty which is a rarity in my recent dining experiences. I would recommend this place for any occasion. read more
