After a morning of exploring Lower Manhattan, I needed a pick-me-up, so I stopped by Sift Cakes and Cookies. The woman at the counter was friendly and helpful. I ordered a large Strawberry Matcha with oat milk and asked for barely any sweetness because I don't like my matcha too sweet. I really enjoyed the matcha. The strawberry and matcha flavors were well balanced, and it was a great drink. To take home, I picked up a slice of the Pandan Chiffon Cake, a slice of the Orange Semolina Cake, and some Black Sesame Shortbread Cookies. My family enjoyed all of the pastries, and we would definitely order them again. Overall, I'll be back for another matcha and to try more of their treats. The shop is small, and they only stock a limited number of cakes and pastries each day, so I recommend getting there early before things sell out. This was a great and unexpected find! read more

Very cute Vietnamese bakery in the Financial District area that has mini steps to go down to. I did not realize about this mini bakery until now when I was on my way to lunch. I decided to go inside to try out their pandan latte and the syrup is pretty addicting. It gets you hooked onto your latte and wanting for more. The latte cup looked very cute with the SIFT sleeve. Drink looks foamy on the top and had a lot of foam making it very fluffy and nice to drink. I got the pandan coconut madeleine and it was very petite and had a very nice design with the coconut pieces. It was very bright neon green like it got pistachios in it. Very tasty but wish it was bigger! I had to take tiny bites to make it satisfying. Interior of the place is very cute and vintage. All the walls were pastel green. A very cute color. Cute little mom and pop shop. I really liked the flavor of the pandan cheesecake, but it wasn't fully set when sold to me so it was really runny and melted on my way home. Pandan latte was overly sweet for me and I wish I ordered it with less sugar. If I came back, I would try the black sesame latte instead. read more

Super easy to miss due to the constant foot traffic and bunched up store fronts but I promise you it's worth checking out :) not many spots around here have asian inspired desserts or drinks so when we saw they had pandan we had to check it out asap! Stopped by on a Saturday morning and grabbed an jced pandan matcha latte which was perfectly balanced between sweet and creamy. I sifted through the landscape of little shops up and down and around this part of lower Manhattan that I had not been to in a while! Steps below is a bakery called Sift Cakes and Cookies. The last time I spied Sift I saw one lone woman working this teeny bakery! A bakery rarely escapes me so I had to check it out! There is room for a small counter that wraps corner where maybe only three people can sit! There are exotic latte flavors such as Pandam, Matcha, Tiramisu, Black Sesame and Horjicha! A nice big board with legs helps let people know what Sift has! I had the Earl Grey Chiffon slice to go at $5.50. Not because I wanted to eat more sugar but just to taste it. It was a velvety sponge cake that had a fine texture. If you swallow the cake it most likely won't get caught in the throat like a lot of sponge cakes! Light and velvety, the early grey had enough contrast of bitterness and flavor to give it a sophisticated flavor and complexity not found in most standard flavored cakes! Cakes are bought by the slice and while cakes can be ordered. I spied a vanilla bean cheesecake for $9 a slice. The lone woman is the baker and no doubt the owner of this shop! She also makes all the drinks. Three people occupied the space drinking the lattes and business was good for a tiny shop way after luncheon hours! read more

I've been wanting to try this new bakery/cafe ever since seeing that it was opening! The interior is super clean and nicely decorated. It's a very small shop, but they still made some room for a few seats. Their drink menu is very fun as well, I tried the tiramisu latte and it was delicious. The drink wasn't super sweet, which I enjoyed. I would love to try their other specialty drinks like the Black Sesame Latte or the Pandan Latte next! Their baked goods looked delicious as well! I need to go back to try, but I wish there was a bit more variety in savory pastries. Overall, I think Sift is a great addition to the neighborhood and makes things a bit more charming:-) read more

What an adorable hole in the wall! Sift Cookies offers patrons a foray into Singaporean/Malaysian sweets and drinks, and I say, it's about time! I ordered the Black Sesame Latte, which upon the first sip, instantly reminded me of tang yuan 汤圆, the popular Chinese sweet balls with different filling options like black sesame paste (my fav!). Although I am a sesame fan, I was initially concerned that a sesame-flavored beverage might be too much. However, the sesame flavor of the Latte did not overwhelm. Rather, it was just right, and the drink overall was not too sweet. The owner mentioned that the Pandan Latte is another one to try, plus their pineapple tarts for the lunar new year! As someone who has only tried one item on their menu, I was hesitant to give a low rating. I have been wanting to come here to try their pandan chiffon cake. I assumed it would be the real (traditional, hence ubiquitous) Singaporean Pandan chiffon cake that many Asian tourist would buy at one famous store at the airport to bring home to their countries. It's a cake that is very hard to replicate outside of Singapore because the real thing requires real pandan leaf juice. At the cafe, I asked the lady boss if this is real pandan cake made with real pandan juice. She merely said, "yes, this is pandan cake." I should have known... Well, in case any others think the pandan chiffon is the Singaporean pandan chiffon, well, sorry, it is not. The texture is not right and the taste is not "pandan-y." There are many pandan cakes outside of Singapore made with pandan extract or essence. Even within Singapore, I guess. But, those are not real pandan cake. I don't know if real pandan juice was used in the making of the pandan cake at this cafe, but the smell and taste doesn't seem like it. Huge disappointment. Won't be going back. (Oh, I was also asked if I wanted to buy the pineapple tart, which is a Lunar New Year staple in Singapore. I looked at the jars of pineapple tart, and knew that this is not made by someone who really knows how to make Singaporean pineapple tart.) My thought when eating the pandan cakes was what many of my Japanese friends say about why they won't go to most of the Japanese food restaurants in the US because the "Japanese food" is not really Japanese. read more
