Had a wonderful trip to Astoria with my beautiful girlfriend yesterday. We started our adventures at the deviously delicious Silver Salmon Grille. Our first taste of heaven was the blackened steak tips cooked to a perfect medium rare. The entrées followed with the creamy al dente tortellini alfredo with blackened salmon and the succulent creole crab and crawfish cakes. With such an amazing selection of mouth watering ingredients gracing or pallets and platinum star service from our hilarious waitress Heidi we didn't think it could get any better. We were wrong in the best way possible. Uttering the words can we see a dessert menu our eye widened intensely as Heidi approached the table with a beautiful display of dessert in hand. She made every dessert sound so savory it was tempting to order the lot. Settling on moist candied pecan carrot cake and elegantly rich mocha cheesecake did not disappoint. Cute girl at the bar took my order, it came out in a reasonable amount of time, took back to the hotel, and devoured everything. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but the clam chowder was amazing. It was one of the best I've had, a very close comparison to Etta's in downtown Seattle or Original Fish Co. in Los Alamitos, CA. I'm glad I chose this place. They corrected it no biggy, but my friends steak was extremely raw in the middle but she didn't see it until several bites in, so we didn't say anything. The waiter was slow to take our order but they might have been short handed. He was friendly enough. Between salmon and pan fried oysters I chose the oysters. WRONG CHOICE. They were greasy but not crisp and way too salty, served atop carmelized onions which were also mushy and served with French fries. I could not even finish the oysters they were terrible and the fries were fries. We both ordered dinner salads which were extra and quite good. My husband's French dip was good too. I love it when restaurants include a little parsley in a dish - I often eat if first thing to clear my palate. So, when the waiter delivered my baked oyster dish, first thing I did was pop that garnish in the middle of the dish in my mouth. OK then. Ever taken a mouthful of lavender. What does one do when one has a mouthful of lavender. Right - discretely spit out. I blew across the table to see if my wife could smell it on my breath. She was only 4 foot away - yup - she smelled it. Stongly. How would you get rid of that taste??? Even when we got back to our B&B - yup, lavender. ARGH! Who in their right mind would put lavender in the middle of a cajun dish? My wife tried the gumbo. Ever heard of chilli powder in gumbo, as in the first flavor you pick up? I've spent a bit of time in New Orleans - I like gumbo, this was not gumbo. This was chilli mascarading as gumbo. The only good news was that they have not mucked with the clam chowder. Yet. We ordered the nightly special of Asian glazed Salmon with a smoked halibut egg roll served over seasoned egg noodles, and Filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and seasoned fresh green beans, each prepared to perfection. Should have read the reviews. Place was very old but not so much kid friendly. I called ahead and made a reservation for 6, including a 2 year old and a 9 year. They sat us in a booth meant for 4, in the front next to an older couple trying to enjoy their meal, in a nearly empty restaurant. At that moment I started second guessing our choice in restaurant but we ended up staying. Our waiter arrived and my two year old nephew was a little restless as he was giving us the specials. I glanced him to say sorry, he not only rolled his eyes but raised his voice to speak over all of us. We all knew at that point that we should have left but we'd already ordered drinks and appetizers. Our waiter came back to get our order and (I kid you not) he never returned. Everyone else working was delivering our plates, filling water glasses etc. I know he wasn't on a break as he sat a table around the corner from us. Food was mediocre at best. Cesar salad was NOT worth the extra $5 (the cost to upgrade your side salad). Salmon was tasteless and slightly undercooked. Husband had the fish and chips which were good and calamari was great (which is why the two stars) but absolutely nothing was worth the price we paid. Nothing!!!! If you are from out of town you will probably agree with my review. Seems the locals love this place, or how else could it have ever achieved 3.5 stars? We came at 5pm on a Sunday and found the place empty. We should have turned around and walked out the moment we came in. I get that it's an old restaurant, but that old musty and mildewy smell just should not be so prevalent. Everything about this place said get out. Unfortunately, I was wholly misled by the menu posted online and felt somewhat confident that the food would make up for our other concerns. Really should have listened to my gut, which had gone from starving to feeling like I didn't want to eat for another week. That's how strong the gut feeling was to leave this place before we ever ordered. Anyways, being an hour and a half from home and not wanting to restart the process of finding another place to eat, we dug into the menu and very quickly realized two things. One, the prices were on average $3 higher than on the website and two, you could tell from each menu item that all this establishment had was a freezer and that NOTHING, I MEAN NOTHING that came from the ocean had been there anytime in recent history. Yes, this means that all shrimp were of the coconut variety (FROZEN), the only crab in the building was dungeoness (CANNED), and the only fish available per the namesake is Salmon (probably FROZEN). And for an establishment where everything is north of $20 for chicken and $30 for beef or seafood, this perceived lack of quality was truly alarming. Again, we wanted to give them a chance. The flavors promised by the menu descriptions seemed to fly directly in the face of the truly run down atmosphere (and the bum sleeping out front). It took one hour from the time we arrived to an empty restaurant to receive our food. We probably could have avoided even tasting it based solely on the presentation. However, having basically already decided that we weren't paying for this and would be moving on, we felt it necessary to try a few bites just to bolster our inevitable complaint to management. Yep, two bites in my "ribeye", used quotation marks for a reason, and after my wife and daughter each had two bites of their bagged frozen chicken breast/canned crab concoction, we knew with certainty that it was time to get out of there. Meals were removed from the bill. Paid for our drinks and got THE HELL out of there. Our appetites were ruined and we ended up at Denny's after 9pm. read more
