One of the best thai restaurants in North Austin. Sip Saam is conveniently located off Parmer/McNeil. It doesn't seem like much from the outside, but the interior is very modern. Definitely a spot I would come for date night. I have ordered here in person and online with exceptional service on both occasions. The food is fresh and tasty, and the iced tea was incredible. Our food also came out very quick, within 10 or 15 minutes of ordering. The only downside is that prices are on the high end for Asian cuisine. We ordered our usual of Thai tea, pad see ew, Thai beef jerky, and Tom yum soup. The Thai tea is probably the best here but I didn't go for the tea. The pad see ew noodles were super weird, thin and chewy. I wasn't a fan of the "main event." The Tom yum soup was a bit bland and not the usual tang that I'm used to. This is literally my go-to Thai restaurant in north Austin hands down. Pad Thai always comes with peanuts, lime, and bean sprouts, and their tamarind sauce is the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and sour. They're rice noodles aren't super charred (slightly charred rice noodles are the best!) but you can tell that they are still very aggressively (in the best way possible) stir-fried. My other favorites are their basil fried rice (there is nothing quite like the fragrance of Thai basil), khao soi, and eggplant. My partner always gets the pad see ew and it's good too. I also love their papaya salad (although for some reason whenever I order it in the restaurant they always forget to give me the grilled shrimp??? Lol). A lot of the staff are Thai and they're always so friendly. We order from them at least once a month because they're so consistent - if you are looking for your Thai place in North Austin I would highly recommend trying them out! P.s. I am so blown away by Sip Saam Thai. There is a new location of this fantastic Thai restaurant but we went on up W. Parmer Lane to the original. The decor is really nice... you could blend in wearing casual clothing or dress up and feel comfortable too. There ordering system is somewhat unique. They have an order sheet which contains all menu items, prices and an area for each item for you to put the spice level you desire for each dish. Mild, medium, hot???....Oh NO- their levels go from 1-10!!! You then use your device to scan into the version of the menu that had all the descriptions. Mark the paper order form and a waitstaff comes and retrieves it. It appears they data enter it and it generates a ticket in the kitchen. They are willing to answer any question too. Our waiter was very nice and took the time to explain their heat levels in response to my query. Service was a little slow getting our order but Sip Saam Thai is struggling and in need of waitstaff- like many other service based employers. Frankly, when I saw how many tables each of the wait staff had, the slight delay was totally understandable. It's a large restaurant and each of the 2 servers had an entire side. I believe the manager (?owner) was helping out too. They bring each table a generous bottle of ice cold water. We were able to fill our glasses several times which was nice. My dining partner loves Thai but is not in for exploring- so ordered the Traditional Pad Thai. She chose shrimp for her protein. I've heard of the dish "Drunken Noodles" but had never had it so I ordered it. I wanted some spice so got level 3. A unique spicy heat- slow burn in my mouth but addictive. I loved it! BTW- the lunch menu is available from 11-2 and comes with a delicious green, crisp, ice cold salad dressed with some savory, peanut-ginger dressing. There was also a little vegetable filled gyoza, pan fried and accompanied by dipping sauce. It's the kind of food that you could just sit and eat one after another. It was so savory, lightly crisp, and very delicious. Small bites indicative of the bowl of deliciousness that followed. My friend devoured every morsel of hers right then and there! I chose to eat with chopsticks which definitely slows me down- as did the heat. I took half mine to go so am looking forward to dinner! My friend who lives in Houston which is riddled with restaurants and culture on every corner as well as in between declared this the best Thai Food she has ever had. My rating is strictly on the taste of food/dishes we've ordered: Larb (beef) salad: 1/5 - they should've used slice beef cooked medium rare and not ground beef - they made this dish too wet so it kind of ruin the toasted rice and other garnishes - making it less crunchy. I really don't understand, how this place has such a good reviews, food is below average and service sucks! In short: Food: Chicken wings: good but pricey, it's 6tiny wings for $8. Chicken curry puffs: it's really good, you don't taste chicken though, you taste potatoes and turmeric, but definitely try it. Chicken Green curry: it was bit thin and very skimpy with protein, it's more like vegetable curry, but taste of curry was ok. Tofu pad Thai: it was horrible, we asked it for spicy, but it was like noodles tossed with ketchup and eggs. Service: After we got our food, not even once did anyone came and checked if everything was ok, pad Thai was opposite to what we ordered, so we wanted to let them know, not even a single person was in there dining room. We ate lunch here on Memorial Day (Monday). Here's what I liked: The place is big and clean The food portions are fine (not enough to share but you won't be hungry) The moo ping (pork skewer appetizer) was very tasty They had a fairly large menu Here's what I didn't like: The kids menu only had veggie fried rice on it that was remotely Thai. Everything else was frozen food and French fries. I love spicy, the spicier the better and they offer a 1-10 spice scale. My husband does not. He ordered his ribeye salad a 4 spice and I ordered my stir fry a 10 spice. He couldn't eat his because it was so spicy and ended eating mine which he could handle. The woman came by to ask how everything was and I said I think the kitchen made a mistake with the salad because it's too spicy for my husband and he ordered it a 4 and she said it was right. Come on. So I finished his salad while he ate my level 10 food because he wasn't able to eat his salad with it being so spicy. Even though we went at lunchtime on a weekday they refused their lunch specials saying it was memorial day and we could only order off of the dinner menu. Visited Sip Saam Thai for the first time and loving the ambiance. Both intimate and modern, it was a pretty relaxing environment. We started with the chicken wings from their Opening Act portion of their menu and then ordered their Spicy Catfish and Spare Ribs in the Plot Twist. The wings flaunted a nice sweet sauce without drenching the meat. The chicken was tender and the overall flavor was great with the garlic. The catfish had a nice crunch on the outside and was delicious and tender. The ribs weren't exactly fall off the bone, but I was pleased with its tenderness. We're not the most courageous on spicy food, but their level 5 spice on the wings as well as the spice level on the catfish seems to be the perfect level for us: the kick was evident, but not overwhelming. Came here for the first time to have lunch and thankfully it was empty for dine-in bc COVID (a lot of people coming in but all for take out orders). We're yuuuggeee Thai fans and Saps is usually our go to, but this is now right up there with Saps if not better. Firstly, this is the first time I saw curry puffs on a menu in Austin - I LOVE Thai curry puffs. If you've never had them, pls do yourself a favor and order them. So flaky and so damn good!! We also ordered the Tom Kha large soup which could have definitely been enough for 5 people - absolutely delicious! Moving on to the entrees, they have lunch specials that come with a salad and vegetable gyoza which is a nice touch but nothing to specifically come for lunch for. We ordered a panang curry with chicken, drunken noodles with beef and basil fried rice with shrimp. All 3 were delicious but I will say I've had better drunken noodles. Panang curry was delicious and so was the basil fried rice. We will definitely be back. PS - My only minor complaint is that the spicy scale of 1-10 is way off. "Order was canceled by merchant". My order had been confirmed around 6pm, and I received that notification nearly an hour later from Doordash, which basically derailed our entire evening plans. Our dinner guests left as I scrambled to figure out what else I could order and pick up from another restaurant within a reasonable amount of time. But as you can imagine, 7:30 on a Friday, not much luck. What a frustrating experience. Doordash didn't offer much support to determine how or why this happened which made it even more frustrating. They said the restaurant might have run out of food, which doesn't make any sense. But ok. 1. If something ordered isn't available, perhaps allow for substitutions?!? Also, how does it take nearly an hour to determine something is or isn't available??? And why cancel the entire order?? 2. If you're very busy, please don't take orders from delivery services. Or kindly cancel orders sooner so that patrons can find an alternative. 3. Provide credit or some way of compensating your patrons when they are inconvenienced in this way. This is a great place for Thai food. Went on a Saturday night, it was busy but not crazy. The service is great, and flavors are amazing. I ordered a large Tom Kha Coconut Lemongrass Soup. First time we got spice level 4 and to us it seemed more like a 7 it was make you sweat hot. Next time I got a 2 and it was what I'd imagined the 4 would be lol. Boyfriend once got the prik king a 3 and it was like a 7 so if you're sensitive to spice definitely let them know because even a low number usually comes out hotter then you'd expect. What drove the review down to a low star rating was the poor service I received. The first few times were when the tall ladies siblings wearing heavy makeup gave my party an ill-mannered demeanor. They stopped giving an attitude when they realized that we tip regularly. The second time was when another chubby waitress refused to let us see our bill. That time we came with a large party of seven, so we were charged a immediate gratituity charge that's given to every large party. No surprises there. However, when we asked her to see the estimated total for the food after we were all done ordering, the waitress refused to let us see the iPad that she took orders with. Why would paying customers not be allowed to see the estimated amount we will be charged after we were done eating? Not only that, but that waitress gave us a patronizing attitude every time she came to drop off our food or spoke to us. I am perfectly able to live without Thai food. Well we arrived and were promptly seated outside on the patio under a beautiful tree. Our waiter Alex welcomed us and made some great recommendations. We ordered a few dishes and enjoyed all of our dishes. It's a legit thai restaurant in terms of flavor profile and presentation. I've spent time tin both Bangkok and Chiang Mai and thus have a good grasp on real Thai food from these two regions. So I was pleasantly surprised when the pad Thai for instance was served wrapped in flat egg like I had numerously in Thailand. So that was a welcoming plus. The curry had a good depth of flavor and richness. We equally enjoyed the appetizers as well. For dessert, we opted for the coconut and mango ice creams.
