I'm a big fan of Thai cuisine and enjoy exploring different Thai restaurants, and Muong Thai has quickly become one of my favorites. Everything we ordered was delicious and prepared just the way I like it--flavorful, fresh, and well-balanced. We tried the Tom Yum soup, Pad Cashew, and Pad Kee Mao, and all three dishes were excellent. The portion sizes were generous, making it a great value for money. The service was good and attentive without being overbearing. The restaurant itself has a large dining area, with booth seating along the sides and tables in the center. Pretty decent spot for Thai food! In terms of restaurants, it's a super casual spot, like you could just come here on a whim or just get takeout. It didn't seem that busy on a Friday evening and had a lot of seating. I got takeout, and my order was ready so quickly! The food was packed so nicely too, perfect for travel and they really minimized the possibility of spillage. The food itself was really good too. The servings were pretty big. They have your classic Thai fare and tried a massamam curry and pad see ew, both with chicken and some chicken wings to share...and everything was the definition of ok. We stopped in here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. We had bought some food from this guy when he was running a food truck out of Liberty Hill, and has since closed it. The truck food was acceptable, but our lunch experience here was awful. Let me qualify why I felt this way; I spent 6 years as a kid in Thailand, and we go there every other year or so for the past 30+ years. I know good Thai food. I have 3 brothers all married to Thai women and enjoy their cooking whenever I can. I ordered the Pad Krapow chicken while my wife opted for the Pad Thai pork. The service was quick and friendly, but the server was obviously not Thai (not that it really matters) but when they are Thai, I speak the language fluently and will usually let them know not to "Americanize" my food. I asked the server to be sure and tell the cook that I wanted authentic Thai hot level spice on an authentic dish. What I got was anything but. The dish came with a cup of corn and ground chicken soup that had a little flavor and a fried egg roll that was gummy inside and overcooked in the fryer. The "Krapow" dish arrived looking more like a dish of stir fried vegetables with some chicken in a dark sauce. Now, if you've had real Pad Krapow you know that first, the meat is normally ground (not sliced like this dish was). Second, I have never had bamboo shoots or mushrooms in my Krapow, much less a bunch of sliced onions and bell pepper. Third, there was absolutely no flavor profile that even slightly resembled Pad Krapow. No spice, no flavor, just a brown liquid soupy looking dish that was below sub-par. I even tried loading it up with fish sauce and peppers, but it couldn't be saved. I ate maybe one third of it and finally just gave up (I rarely if ever leave anything on my Thai food plates).My wife's Pad Thai at least had a little flavor, but was doused in a red sauce that pooled under the noodles (which were vermicelli instead of the requisite thicker rice stick noodles). The taste was too sweet, and like my dish, hers had zero spice despite asking for Thai hot. In the hundreds of Thai restaurants I've eaten in over the many years, I can honestly say this is perhaps the worst attempt at authentic Thai food I've ever experienced. We've eaten at a few other places in Austin and Round Rock and will drive back to those places before returning to Muang Thai. Extremely disappointed and saddened that they think this passes for acceptable Thai food. BTW - if you know Pad Krapow, there is a very distinct flavor profile generated by the combination of light soy, green mountain, oysters, and fish sauces. What they used here doesn't even come close. read more

This place was okay. We went in a big group of 10 and they had space for all of us. It was not crowded inside for a Sunday afternoon but the location is kinda hard to get to. I ordered Tom Kha with chicken and they first came out with tofu. When they realized I didn't order tofu, they changed it to chicken. I was surprised how white the soup looked (I'm used to seeing it with a more reddish color). The soup was flavorful but I wasn't blown away by it. But then the trifecta bite of Chinese broccoli with a bit of chicken and noodle turned into a CRISPY, CHEWY, CHUNK OF PLASTIC. It probably contained meat or veggie in it at some point. Yes, you want to vomit now? I certainly felt that way as it was IN MY MOUTH. This was an all spoons down moment at the dinner table. Staff were shocked and apologetic and said the meal was on them. I came here on 1/4/2020 with another party and had a small dinner date. I ordered two items which was a soup and fried rice dish. Soup "No soup for you"- The Soup Nazi/Yev Kassem Tom Yum soup with shrimp* I almost always used to eat this soup when I visited Thailand on multiple occasions. This soup offered here is a Thai hot and sour soup with lemongrass, lime juice, kaffir lime leaves, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and scallions. I thoroughly enjoy this classic Thai soup as chili peppers are used to add spiciness to the Thai hot and sour soup. It provides health benefits, such as dealing with inflammation and congestion problems. As they are rich in Vitamin A, they are also used to improve immunity. In sum, Tom Yum is a fascinating Thai dish that you will always find in the best Thai restaurants, which is not only great in taste, but also contains nutrients and properties that help improve one's health condition. 5/5 Aside from my Basil Fried Rice with shrimp, I also tried my companions rice dish which was just outstanding. Came on a Friday night based on a friends recommendation, they were fairly quiet but it was also a holiday weekend so my guess is it would usually be busier. They have a super expansive menu with a lot of options I hadn't seen before at a Thai restaurant. I could've stared at it for hours and never made up my mind. We decided to go family style and try a few different dishes which I'd definitely recommend for your first time here. We started by sharing the Tod Mun, which were fried fish patties (similar to crab cakes but a more firm texture). They had a delicious curry seasoning that complemented the tasty rich flavor from the fish. It also came with a peanut chili sauce on the side that brought an interesting combination, I thought it was great with or without the sauce. For our main dishes we shared the Lamb Kra Prow and the Chu Chee. The lamb had a tasty thin basil based gravy. It had a nice flavor and was a good relatively light way to start our main course. The lamb was a little tougher than I'd usually like, but went well with the sauce. The Chu Chee was the star of the meal. It's a lightly fried catfish in a super rich coconut curry. In my experience coconut sauces are usually seasoning forward and have the coconut in the background to mellow out any heat. This curry goes the other way and has a heavy delicious coconut flavor, with some spicy in the background to counter the decadent sauce. The fish itself was quite tasty and you barely notice that it's fried. I'd highly recommend this dish for your first time here as it really stands out from other Thai experiences I've had. We came in wanting to try some desserts but were pretty stuffed by the end of our meal so we decided to save those for next time. With all the interesting options on their menu I can definitely see myself coming back here. If you're looking for a different Thai experience I couldn't recommend it enough. read more

My brother's family tend to like this place as we tend to here all the time, but since it has been awhile since I have had the food like 5 years ago, I will put in what I thought. Be prepared this place has one of the spiciest food that it was hard for us to enjoy this. They have levels 1 to 3. I would suggesting going with a 1 as we made the mistake of going with the recommendation unless you want the food really spicy. Here is what we ordered 1. Papaya Salad 2. Chu chee 3. Basil Crispy Duck I can not recall the other dishes we ordered, but those are the three I can remember. I would high recommend getting the chu chee as the the sauce was very good. Place has a much nicer vibe since they remodeled the seating area. It's much brighter and vibrant than before. The food itself is probably one of the more authentic Thai places in Austin. The food is always good and what you'd expect and is always very consistent. Staff is generally friendly and welcoming. No kids options which bites, but portions are large enough to split as long as they are fine with your choice or you need to choose something they would like. Nothing wrong with 3 stars at all. It's just what you'd expect. Nothing above and beyond or crazily fantastic. Worth visiting! read more

Update 4/18/19: AMAZING!! Just had the best catfish dish in my life. Instead of order my usual favorite Laab, I ordered the Chu Chee which is on the last page of the menu. It was a 12-14 inch catfish fillet with a light but very crispy batter. It comes in a coconut milk based curry sauce. I ordered medium heat which allows me to enjoy the full flavors. Flavor is a mixture of slightly salty, slightly sweet, and with kaffir lime which was fresh and prominent. This is officially my new favorite. My wife ordered the Pad Kratiem Pluck Thai. She chose sliced beef. Perfectly cooked in a soy and garlic sauce served on shredded lettuce. Original Post: Muangthai is our go to Thai place in NW Austin. Have been coming here for years. We each get a separate order of Tsunami Rolls with shrimp. Wrapped tight. Just enough mint leaves to not be overwhelming. Peanut sauce is thick. They have the best Tom Ka soup. Came here for lunch with my colleague and everything was great. It's very hard to find an authentic Thai restaurant in Austin since I'm so picky when it comes to Asian food. I went to Thailand so many times that I know how the real things taste, and MuangThai really impressed me. The restaurant is a bit dark and looks outdated. They could have better lighting and decoration to make it more lively. The staff was very nice and polite. Service was a little slow but it made sense because we came in during peak lunch time. We ordered: Thai iced tea: very good. Thai iced coffee: very good. Wish it could have a little more coffee flavor. Yum Nuer - Thai beef salad. It was spicy and so delicious. Beef was thinly sliced and very tender. The fish sauce and lime dressing was the best - I could drink it all. Pad See Ew with shrimp: Delicious! This dish in Thailand is less saucy but I'm a saucy person so I love it anyways. I would request the Chinese broccoli to be cooked longer so it wouldn't be too crunchy or taste raw. Thai green curry (with no meat): Very yummy! Curry was creamy, it had a great heat kick without overpowering the entire dish. Each entree on Lunch Special menu during weekdays come with a bowl of soup of the day. Today we got Tom Kha soup - coconut milk soup with chicken, mushroom, lemongrass, and onion. It was the best Tom Kha I have had. It has the perfect balance of creaminess, lemongrass aroma, chicken's tenderness, and the heat. My favorite Thai in Austin and in Top 5 from around all of my travels and I've been all over and abroad. Job's Tom Kha and Chu Chee are the best I've ever had. His curries are on point and we have never experienced a bad meal from Muang Thai. Their take out service was always popular even before Covid but it continues even after their remodeling of the restaurant. Ordered the Pad Kee Mao, Spicy hot with tofu via delivery. Order came right on time and was just the right temperature. Opening the take out box revealed a hearty plate of noodles, veggies and tofu - no excess grease at all. The spice level was very good for this dish and I'm definitely sweating after finishing the meal! Noodles were cooked just right and the tofu was fried well and flavorful. The Thai basil wasn't overpowering at all and complemented all of the other flavors on the plate. They've got a pretty nice chili oil/sauce going here. I absolutely recommend Muangthai, this is hands down the most flavorful thai food I have tried. Their pad thai is a classic and I love the depth of flavor it has to the average pad thai. We also tried the fried catfish with red curry sauce and it was super delicious. I would have to say get it fresh because the catfish is super crispy when it first comes out but obviously the sauce with make it soft pretty quickly. We still really enjoyed this dish, great spin on a southern classic. I have gotten plenty of takeout from here and also recommend their lunch specials if you're looking for a filling meal for a good deal. read more
