Back at this coffee shop thanks to no parking at Campesino. I don't think I quite processed how wonderful Siphon's parking. Anything that doesn't involve parallel parking is a gift from God. Anyway, I didn't get a coffee this time. I got a huge lemon tart all for myself (this is major news because I've kept myself away from processed sugar for like three weeks) and omg, it was divine. The lemon curd was sweet, tart and creamy all at the same time and the crust was even more delicious. My only compliant--softer crust please. I know I sound prissy but I hate eating certain desserts with my hands when I know I've been touching stuff all day. I attempted to cut into the tart but it almost flew across the coffee shop AND made a terrifying sound. Also, the tart cost around $4. read more

Overall a nice coffee shop. Service is good, atmosphere is nice when not busy (lots of windows, modern/rustic decor); this is probably the best part. I had heard a lot of hype about the chocolate chip cookie and was actually pretty disappointed. The cookie's flavor is amazing (really love the salt flakes -- this is the most unique part), but the texture is severely lacking. This may be one of the hardest/crunchiest cookies I have purchased from a bakery/coffee shop, aside from Luce Ave. If you enjoy hard/crunchy cookies, you will like this, but I feel that most people, including myself, enjoy a softer/moister/gooey-er cookie. It is slightly improved by warming and dipping in a drink, but only marginally. Most recently got the chai latte w/ almond milk and no vanilla syrup added (which is usually part of the drink). Would rate this a 3/5; it was a bit too watery for my liking, would prefer a creamier latte but could be because of the almond milk. Can't really comment on the coffee, so take this review w/ a grain of salt (hehe). Overall would visit again to study, but would not get the cookie unless they change their recipe. read more

I really love this place. I hate that they took away the bench I felt more people were able to study compared to how they have it setup. I really am writing this review because I attend their comedy show they host once a month. Although they could do a better job promoting the event it's still something I would recommend. I sat in this place for 7 hours. ... actually, I don't know if I should be sharing that... Anyways, this place feels like home to me - hipster at heart - and although pricey, the Siphon coffee is really impressive! The cups they give you hold the heat in SUPER well so your coffee stays warm for a surprising amount of time. Siphons real strength is that it is the best place to fuel up before beginning a four-hour study session. Of all the food you could get from a coffee shop the bacon is the real standout... I don't know how they make such tasty bacon but they manage it. There's a variety of seating options -- from couches to tables to counter seats -- whatever strikes your fancy. Siphon does get crowded at peak hours, so I'll often start at a couch and then try and snipe a table when one opens. The tables are very conducive to spreading out books, laptops, and food. My biggest gripe with Siphon is that there aren't enough outlets (you can get some at the window seating), but just come prepared with a fully charged laptop. In addition, service can sometimes be slow, but in the end that just means more study time! read more

The streamlined set-up consists of furniture of dark-wood tables, leather accent chairs, communal coffee tables and a small side nook with a sofa for lounging with a larger group of friends. Despite the abundance of windows, the openness and the dark interior palette, the place still felt cozy. Need to go back to try their siphoned coffee (was in a hurry) and try out their food, which they noted were all made in-house. Also it's important to note that they only offer natural sugar options. I find that if you want to serve quality coffee, then you should offer quality condiments - none of that Splenda poison you find at other Montrose coffee shops. **Returned 5 days later and realized that the acoustics of the place is awful. I'm almost mad at myself for not finding this place sooner. It was recommended by a good friend (also someone who is pretty picky with coffee), and I immediately knew I had to take a visit. Let me just tell you: if you're into great coffee, good beer, a sweet spot to chill, and a super laid-back staff, SIPHON IS FOR YOU. Let's get into some details - First off. Coffee. A freaking Plus. The thing that makes this place so neat is a method of brewing called a siphon, or in other words, an "upside down french press." I can't really describe it, so it's just one of those things you need to see for yourself. It produces an incredibly smooth and balanced cup of coffee for any coffee-lover to swoon over. If you're not really into black coffee, their lattes and cappuccinos are also incredible - velvety milk and delicious espresso. Not into coffee at all? Well they have beer too! My personal fave is the Lone Pint Yellow Rose. They only pick the best craft beers and they're extremely knowledgeable on them as well. Ambiance - Plenty of seating for any night. Comfortable couches and chairs, bars, tables for two or four, and a long comfy bench for late study nights. I've been about three times so far (all after about 8PM), and there's never too big of a crowd. You're likely to find seating (also a patio)! Great place to study because it's definitely not very loud in there. I'm not too sure about the other hours of the day, but I can't imagine it being ridiculously packed in there. As far as I know, they have great food too! Since I'm a sucker for sweets, I've just been munching on that black and white cookie each time. So you should probably try that because it's just great. Stopped in on a Monday afternoon. It was surprisingly crowded, not a single table inside was available and it was pretty loud. There was one table outside so we sat there, but I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke so I kept peeking inside to see if anyone was vacating. Most people looked camped out with computers, chargers, books, etc... I got an iced tea, my companion had the siphon coffee for one. The siphon coffee was super cool looking and fun to watch them make. Unfortunately, in her words, it was not worth $7 and the 10 minute wait. My iced tea was good so no complaints about that. Overall, an ok place to grab something quick to go. Wouldn't recommend trying to sit/work there. read more

Siphons is one of my favorite coffee shops EVER!! There's just something about the coffee, and atmosphere that just keeps me coming back for more. Their lattes are great, but my favorite type of coffee is an "Undertow", and they make the best one in Houston. The only downfall is there's hardly any seating, which isn't a bad thing. Parking can be a pain as well since they share parking with another business. I wish they were able to expanse the parking lot, but I understand that's a lot of money to invest in. Considering I've been back to three Saturdays in a row, it's safe to say this is a sweet spot. Spacious, beautiful, with plenty of table space, it's a lovely study spot! I love the floor to ceiling windows, making Siphon a bright and modern space. I have yet to try the signature "siphon" coffee, but my cappuccino was perfect and the cold brew was satisfying. The siphon coffee is quirky and different, but for the price ($7 a cup or $11 for two) is a bit steep for a student. I'll save it for a special occasion. Being a lover of all things coffee, tea, wine, and beer; I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this place. I've been here a few times, last time being tonight- wondering why I don't come here more often. I walked in, and was glad to find it was pretty empty. Maybe it's cause school is out, and only suckers like me are taking classes in the summer, haha jk, who knows, but every other time I've been here it's been pretty busy. So anyway, a really nice girl with awesome purple hair took my order. Everyone is always really nice here!! I'm a sucker for good customer service. I ordered a Chai tea with a coconut macaroon, she asked me if I wanted it for here or to go, and I opted to have it there since I needed to get some homework done. They have really awesome wooden seating, the place is pretty spacious, enough to have a few couches and even a TV in the corner. I sat down and my tea was ready in a few. They even apologized for the wait, but it wasn't bad. I think one of the things I like the most is the presentation of the coffees and teas. The pastries are always great; and I believe they are made in-house. My chai tea was perfection, and paired great with my tasty macaroon. Another thing I really enjoy is the atmosphere, the vibes, the lighting... First of all, I love siphon. So if you're questioning if you should give this place a try, yes, please go. I'm writing this review in hopes that siphon would notice that something wrong is going on in the kitchen.. First time I ordered the turkey panini, it was Devine. Wonderful combination of flavors between the pickled onions, pears, turkey, Gruyere and arugula. And then memorable texture between the crispy crust and soft yet chewy inside of the ciabatta bread, and the thinly sliced pears that could easily be broken apart by your incisors... But something has changed in the last few weeks at the kitchen in Siphon. The bread is no longer crispy, but slightly on the stale and chewy side. Slices of pears are now thicker and unevenly distributed. And pickled onions are missing unless the customer knows the menu better than the chef.... I'm sad, Bc the most embarrassing part is, I raved about this place to a friend who hasn't been. I ordered the same sandwich to go for her at one point for her to try, and now she'll never set foot in the cafe, and thinks I'm insane. read more

We were looking for a place to eat breakfast in the area and stumbled upon Siphon cafe, we ordered the breakfast panini and a chorizo breakfast taco. The panini was very good and the breakfast taco was average at best, very greasy. This place specializes in siphoned coffee at $7 a cup it is pretty expensive but totally worth it! The coffee tastes completely different, smoother with none of the bitterness I am in the area again I would go back for the coffee but would skip the food. Every time I come to Houston, I come here first. The atmosphere is great for chatting or working. The coffee is out of this world. I only ever get the Siphon but it's worth it for the volume and flavor. They do a good job of pairing the bean to the method. I don't know why this place has so high reviews. I mean it's a neighborhood gem type of place where you grab a quick coffee but definitely not a place to study for a long time since the place is small compared to how many customers are coming. They have few outdoor seating. They only have limited space where you can comfortably sit at the big table. Most of them are just long wooden tables and chairs are so uncomfortable. The chairs don't have a back so when you study your back will likely hurt. They have wifi, but it is constantly disconnecting. You can charge your electronics at your seat (I guess that's a good one). The coffee is okay, I got the mocha latte. The staffs seem friendly. They have private parking lot and parking has spaces so that's good. However, considering everything, I don't think I will be coming back here. read more

Came in on a Wednesday around 11 and it was pretty packed considering that it's the middle of a workday. If it's a really pretty day, I suggest sitting outside in their back patio because it's a super cute area (although the tables outside aren't the cleanest). Make sure you clean up after yourself because it sucks if the person that's trying to take your seat has to clean up after you (the workers don't come out to clean much from what I observed). I tried the (hot) vanilla latte (5/5 stars for me!) - the right amount of foam to liquid ratio, the perfect taste and flavoring (with real vanilla beans I believe), not scolding hot when I got it (yay for not burning my tongue). TLDR - I think it's up there in my top 3 favorite places to get a vanilla latte! Also got the chocolate chip cookie after researching everyone's Yelp reviews and to my disappointment, I didn't like it much (2/5 for me). I'm a gooey-soft cookie person, and the cookie was entirely crunchy. The perfect neighborhood coffee shop. I could easily come here for the chocolate chip cookies only! But fortunately for everyone they also have very talented baristas serving excellent espresso drinks. Amaya beans for those wondering. The vibe is relaxed and inviting, and even though it was very busy when I visited late on a Saturday morning, it was still quite peaceful as drinks were calmly poured and people patiently waited for the order or chatting quietly at their tables. I frequent this establishment wayyyyyy to often. I am newer to Houston and this place has made me feel right at home. They have some of the KINDEST people working here. They greet me everyone morning with a smile and a "Hey Jacky!" -The espresso is top notch. If Audrey is working you are in luck (she makes the best cortado I have EVER had). -I owe a lot of my weight gain to their breakfast tacos. Mid town crowd / Hipsters café I'm intrigued with the uniqueness of the siphon coffee. I went in with the idea that I was going to be hipster and order my coffee from a siphon. However, it's 7$ and well let's be honest who wants to pay that much for coffee. Plus, I'm not a hipster. I felt a little out of place here because I was wearing pearls and a summer dress and didn't bring my Mac or beats by Dre headphones. I proceeded with my usual Americano coffee,this time at least it didn't taste burned. The empanadas are delish! I was surprised that they even had them on the menu. Yum yum yum. My friends ordered a cappuccino and they had cool coffee art on them. The staff is nice. This place fills up quick the architecture admirable along with the modern wood designs of the tables. Let's cut the intros and get right to it: Pastries/Paninis - pretty on par. They were very light and fluffy, especially the quiche! Plus, the portion you get is not bad at all. Coffee - tried the Siphon for One and it's alright. Aside from the pretty cool science project nostalgia you feel, it's a decent cup of coffee served from a rounded out boiling flask. The lattes are pretty ordinary as well. Don't get me wrong, they weren't horrible. It just wasn't anything special. Interior - like most coffee spots in HTX, it is way too small for a groups of people to come together and study. BUT the decor is pretty hipster and cute and shit. You know. I do like the outdoor seating as well, but it can get awkward because it's right up against the window where people inside are studying. They are literally facing you as you sit on the outside. Haha I was highly amused by this one guy going HAMF with his studies. Hope you got your A, man. Spent most of last Sunday working on my computer here, drinking Americanos, and eating their empanadas. The coffee is good, and the pastries are scratch made. Nothing is cheap here, but I was impressed with both the food and coffee. I wish the place had a little more space. Also, the stools, which comprise most of the seating, are not so comfortable. Try to grab one of the leather chairs if you're in for a long work session. Last, there could be more sockets But if you need a place with great coffee and good pastries to fuel long session with your laptop, this will fit the bill. Others have complained about parking. This is strictly a review of customer service. The quality of products at Siphon Coffee has always been excellent in all my visits. This is specifically a review for the morning (10-11am) of January 18th, the three girls working the registers- complete and absolute unprofessionalism. She took our order with an annoyed looked on her face (we literally just got there, so something must have happened before). Kept asking us "is that it" as if we were taking forever- it's not like we were ordering a whole bunch of items, or that it was busy. The order came out with issues- and one of the ladies thought we were "cutting" and said "we go in order here" rudely. We were simply asking where our order was because they said the same exact name of another order, and was just simply clarifying it. The rest of our order subsequently came 45 min later (no exaggerating here) as it seemed like they were purposely trying to delay the rest of our order. Apparently, they don't do this because we saw people who came after us get their orders. Additionally, while waiting for our order, we could clearly here them talking about their customers and how "dumb" everyone is because they don't know where to put their dirty dishes (where there clearly isn't a sign anywhere). Stay away from this place- customer service is horrible. read more
