Absolutely disgusted. I will NEVER spend another dollar at this place again. This morning, I was approached by a homeless individual who politely asked for a black coffee and a muffin. That's it. I agreed because it's basic human decency. As I walked toward the entrance to pay, some employee storms out, blocks my way, and tells me I'm not allowed to buy anything because it's for a homeless person. Seriously? He refused to let me in and denied me service. Not only is that humiliating it's heartless. As a regular customer, I'm beyond angry. A chill spot to grab coffee and get some work done. Very spacious interiors with plenty of tables and seats. They have their own private parking lot but it does get fill up quickly during busy hours. You can also do street parking. They have a lot of unique coffee options as well some of the regular. There's also a variety of baked goods as well as breakfast items to choose from. I waited probably 20 minutes for an iced tea, and just watched people who came in after me walk away with their orders, while I was standing there at the bar. Also really crowded so you're basically "competing" with people for a place to sit. Definitely not the chill vibe you're looking for. They have a good amount of tables and seating outside though. I love this place! Their coffee is probably the best in Houston. Their breakfast tacos (I have had them many times) are AMAZING. Probably the best I've ever had. The tortillas are homemade, the salsa is delicious, and the eggs are always cooked perfectly! The ambience in there is amazing as well. It is decorated so well inside, and I love the outdoor seating as well. The only problem can be finding a seat! It is also a little louder in there, so sometimes it can be hard to study, but we do. Great place to relax, surf the net, and have good libations. You can get quick foods like muffins, rolls, and even a breakfast sandwich cooked to order. Beers and wine are available too for your afternoon get togethers. Their signature drink is coffee made with a siphon pot. It reminds me of a smaller version of something my grandmother used on occasion when I was a wee lad. The process is still the same, water in the lower half of the pot is heated to boiling and it rises up through a tube into a the upper chamber where a dose of coffee grounds await. When all of the water has risen, the heat is then turned off where the cooling allows the the water-coffee mixture to drop back to the lower pot filtered of grounds on the way down. I've been to this place a number of times in the past and almost always order my Cortado as the usual. The other day I decided to splurge on the siphon coffee (it's at least double any other coffee drink). My impression of it is underwhelming but with that old familiar overcooked percolater coffee taste. It wasn't smooth and I would attribute that to using a very hot water temp and coffee grounds being ground too fine. I will be back, but not for siphon coffee. read more

Then as she looked to me for me to order the cashier completely turned away from us 180 degrees, took two steps away, to continue a conversation with another employee. Confused, I stood there waiting while he joked with another employee, and grabbed a candy out of a bag of Halloween candy they had on their side of the register, for about 30 seconds. Then when he finally turned back around, I ordered. When we were finding a place to sit, probably 4/5 of the open seats had either food debris on it, empty dirty plates, or were otherwise unclean. Then after everything, the coffee was... fine at best. I got the Honey Bee and yet it tasted exactly the same as my partners Chai Latte. Which should be alarming enough as to the disorganization of this place. The barista didn't even know what I ordered when I asked for which drink was drink. I am a huge coffee enthusiast (roast my own beans, espresso etc) and I will say this was easily one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. They have a private parking lot so it's usually not too hard to find parking, but they do share this lot with a couple other businesses. I like that they have a variety of seating areas. Long tables, small tables, bar seating, couches, and an outdoor patio area. They also have plenty of power outlets making this an ideal place to bring your laptop and get some work done. I also think it's cool they have a piano that they let people play on. Most people I've seen play on the piano are really good, and usually play perfect study music. As for the coffee, you can't go wrong here. You can tell the baristas really care about making you the perfect latte. They have a lot of specialty flavors like honey bee, cereal milk, rose cardamom, gold milk, and other flavors that rotate. My go to order is just a simple mocha latte with almond milk. No matter what you order though, you are guaranteed to get a quality cup of joe. Pro tip: All pastries are 50% off, and beer is 2 for 1 all after 5pm daily. read more

Have been a customer of Siphon for many years. It's a reliable spot that has good coffee. They also often host community events for local bands and poet slams for which you can buy tickets to if you sign up for the newsletter. As far as a study place, they are one of my favorites in the area. I personally prefer the barstool high tables near the window with plenty of outlets. There's probably about 10 spots at the window tables. There is another standing table near the middle of the shop but with no outlets, so better if you're charged or just hanging with friends. There are two other large tables where several people can sit but can get crowded. Plenty of other casual seating on couches inside and several booths outside for working. Love this place. My only small complaint is that sometimes I will leave when I arrive as it is too packed to find an outlet, which you can gauge based off parking spots in the street. Give them a try! read more

I don't know who the people who work here think they are -- they're not. I asked for a double caramel macchiato, iced. They informed me they couldn't do it iced because it has steamed milk. I asked them if they wouldn't mind just putting it over ice anyway? They said they will not. I'm confused here: you can put hot coffee over ice but not milk? I've been in the service industry for over 25 years and when a guest makes a request that's doable that I may not necessarily recommend, I'd do it, because that's the whole reason I'm there. To provide a service. Back to the order, "Well can you just put ice on the side so I can do it myself?" *begrudgingly* "sure." Go to sit down. Chair back is completely broken and flopping around. Awesome. Put it in the office or in the trash. Receive my platter of an extra espresso shot, caramel macchiato and a cup of ice. Could you not put the double shot and steamed milk in a larger cup? Take it back to my table and toss it all into the ice. Perfect. I return the tray of assorted empty cups back to the bar top as a sign of courtesy. Sit back down. *my name is called quite loudly* I turn around and I'm told quite rudely where the empty cups are supposed to go. After my girlfriend capitulates and moves the cups to their approved station, I'm done with this joint. As we are leaving I inform the second obstinate barista that I don't work there. She says something about common courtesy or something along those lines. I figured I was being courteous by bringing it back to the counter and my mistake for missing the training meeting on where I'm supposed to place dishes when I'm done paying for a service. I'm sure I won't be missed by the staff here for whatever reason, but I sure hope everything is okay at home for them. Needless to say I refuse to come here again. To the owner: if this is how you've trained your staff, best of luck. If not, you may want to check on the level of 'customer service' they're not providing at your establishment. It's embarrassing. We went to Siphon and parked down the street because the lot was popping, but inside was still a relaxing and not excessively busy of a shop. It has your standard coffee shop vibe with a decent amount of seating. It's not too loud and has inside and out seating, I'd definitely come by to study here. The staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu, which seemed really cold that they even have an option where you can order a dealers choice. We got the the Cereal milk latte and the honey bee latte and both were solid hits . The barista recommended ordering a mix of the cereal milk and snickerdoodle and I will definitely do that, as we thought it would be too sweet, but the cereal latte was more subtle then expected (because we didn't mix it up well). I thought siphon was pretty good. I'm guessing a lot of people think it's great because it was packed! I got an americano and it was okay. I also got the Nutella muffin, it was meh. The flavor was actually really good, but the muffin was dry. To quote my lovely mother-in-law, "I don't like to waste my calories on dry cake." I definitely suggest trying out siphon. I have some friends from out of state and they swear by it. My mom got the snickerdoodle latte and the ham and cheese croissant. Both were delicious. Worth it to try it for yourself. read more

Meh. I think in terms of space, it's feels cramped even when it's only half full. I felt like I had to squeeze through spaces anytime I wasn't seated. The coffee was okay. Nothing special. Not a lot of outlets either, at least not for the spaces not against the wall. EDIT: I actually do enjoy going to the library to study, but I also enjoy going to coffee shops with adequate space to move around and outlets to charge. Not sure what a library has to do with the space being super cramped and having 'meh', coffee, but okay, go off. This is my go-to coffee spot to do some work. Strong cup of coffee and delicious tacos :) Food I've tried a few things, and I think everything is a little expensive for what you get. My favorite though is their tacos (starts at $4) and they're pretty filling. Ive had their empanadas and quiches and thought they were meh. Pastries are good but basic (def ask to heat it up) and are half off after a certain time (I think 5pm). Drinks Usually I just get a black coffee, and they have a bottomless drip option. The siphon coffee is cool, but I personally didn't find it better than the regular drip. As for lattes, I usually just get a chai latte. Ive tried some specialty lattes, but can't say they're the best. I can never really taste the "cereal flavor" in the cereal one . Space I believe there are only outlets at the high top seating and next to the community table by the restrooms. It can get pretty crowded, so it can be hard to find seating, but it's not that bad if you don't need an outlet! I've always been able to find seating in the mornings. Free WiFi with no password is solid and fast. I think a lot of people come here to study/work. There's also outdoor seating, and I've had no issues using the internet outside Parking Shares a lot with the other businesses so sometimes have to find street parking (though I've always been able to find a spot, and I usually go weekday mornings) Service I think they're generally friendly.
